At this point they are out of touch with the internet culture zeitgeist now. Generally it happens to all creative types where have only a handful of years where they are the most creative and slowly peters out if the formula is not shaken up.

I called this years ago when Derrick clearly was getting frustrated that mega64 was getting stagnant and not going anywhere and wanted to use it as a platform for bigger and better things.

They make tshirts and podcasts more than anything. Some 12 year old can make a gaming yt channel and over shadow them within a month.

They are quite fortunate to have cultivated a niche following that manages to support them all these years if not for them the YouTube channel would have died a slow death years ago.

The only thing Derrick no longer does is the podcast (though he was on it last week) and that's just because he didn't feel like participating in that aspect of the business. But he still writes and directs and appears in almost all their content as well as appears in patreon videos. They all have side projects and pursuits but it's not as though he left the group.

Derrick wanted to be a real director. He did not envision still doing Mega64 at this point in his life. I am sure he is bitter that he will never make anything of consequence while guys like Chris Stuckman prepare to join the ranks of cinema pioneers like Gance, Kubrick, and Scorcese.

It's really clear that they don't care about games at all anymore.

they still operate a successful business and can sustain at least seven regular employees, they have a dedicated fanbase and pretty much have freedom to make whatever kinds of videos they want, so why would they give up?

I'll grant you that, and they were also eclipsed by a lot of their contemporaries over the years. But where are those contemporaries now? Rooster Teeth is gone, Screw Attack too and many more. And how many of those 12-year-olds will have the will or skill to still have a big enterprise in 5 years? Mega64 have been around more than 20 years, that's an eternity in internet time. They call themselves internet wienerroaches for a reason, they've grown to a comfortable and sustainable size and are content to stay there more or less. Other people can easily be bigger but they can't endure

That's subjective, I was never a fan either but you can't deny how big they were (especially RT)

You don't last for as long as they have by having "Give Up" as a viable option, you can debate the quality of their work or how successful you think they should be but only someone who's never had their kind of success would talk about quitting now

If Mega64 dies I'd be genuinely worried for Shawn. Everyone else has some sort of skill or profession they can fall back on, and he has the most to lose since he's the only one on the team with a family.

Shawn has decades of production experience and works alongside Garrett in creating all their sets and props. He also is in charge of their sizeable merch business, I think he'll be fine if he were to have to look for work elsewhere.

I met the lead guy at a convention once, forgot his name. I tried shaking his hand and wouldn't. And it was my first time at a convention so I wondered if it's just a convention thing where they all don't shake hands.

That's what I was thinking. I was so awkward about it I would awkwardly walk around his Mega 64 booth. I extended my hand and he extends his hand, and jokingly pulled away. I thought he was a dick (maybe he is, but I don't care) but I just assumed he was a germaphobe.

Mega64 is gay! Honestly, the whole time we've been doing these videos, we film a sketch or do a podcast. Then we all butt frick. We frick hard. We bust inside each other. Mega64 was always about being gay. Being gay outside. Being gay outside of a Walmart. Being gay in a building. Being gay while being gay. Mega64 is honored to be a part of Pride Month 2024. Mega64 is fricking gay. No fricking shit!

Mega64 is one of the internet creator to establish a cult like fanbase. They don't need to do anything but their cult will sustain them. It's a bizarre phenomenon that I haven't fully understood.
