Yes. Should have made them even more bestial, but no, gotta make sure they don't need to make unique armor sets. Bethesda has always been so lazy...

technically these variants still exist in the lore, you just don't see them in any recent games and don't get to play as them

      >gotta make sure they don't need to make unique armor sets.

WoW has gnomes and tauren both wearing the same armor sets back in 2004. Surely Bethesda isn't that incompetent.

Aren't the ones from Morrowind different from the ones in Oblivion and Skyrim

      Anonymous

yeah, khajiits can range from being fully cat to almost completely human/elf looking depending on the phase of the moon they're born under
and argonians can be made more human-looking by the hist for ease of fitting in to human societies. even though it's not working, clearly.

you do not get to play as these other variants though because that way, as

Yes. Should have made them even more bestial, but no, gotta make sure they don't need to make unique armor sets. Bethesda has always been so lazy...

said, the devs don't have to make different head/foot armor for them.

Morrowind beast races are extremely underrated, I love the detail that went to them, you can tell whoever designed had a lot of fun researching actual reptile and feline biology and behavior

it's called a dragonbreak. which is a retcon but the retcon happened in-universe. kind of an ingenious excuse on their part.

      Anonymous

Between Morrowind and Oblivion no. Basically, in pre-oblivion lore, Cyrodiil was a pretty different place, so they came up with the excuse that Tiber Septim, upon ascending to godhood, used his powers to reshape Cyrodiil from primarily a jungle to the idylic Medieval Europe you see in Oblivion (despite the fact every NPC in Morrowind, which takes place only 6 years prior to Oblivion). Some people think that there was a dragonbreak after the Nerevarine struck the Heart of Lorkhan at the end of Morrowind, but It's not widely accepted.

This excuse is only for Cyrodiil's vegetation though, It doesn't really try to explain the radical cultural differences between Morrowind Imperials and Oblivion Imperials, nor minor things like beast race legs or every spear and crossbow in Tamriel seemingly disappearing at some point between the two games.

Sometimes you need sane people to take what the resident crackhead lunatic comes up with and springboard off of that. I mean even Morrowind ie the game where Kirkbride's influence is heaviest has its climax be the hero charging into the villain's fortress to beat him to death with physical weapons then destroying the source of his power before dipping for further adventures. There's only so much abstract mystic mumbo jumbo you can represent in a game, Bethesda's issue isn't necessarily wanting to cut down on the weirdness but rather at which degree they do it. See also: Kirkbride's idea where the Thalmor possessed a giant version of Auriel's Bow inside Aetherius with which they would've shot Talos dead, which was retooled into Auriel's Bow appearing in Dawnguard with the ability to shoot out the sun.

There's a bunch of Khajiit variants so I'm okay with that change, or rather I thought it was neat at first to get one of the more humane furstocks for comparison even if by now we've had four (?) games with the Cathay (Oblivion, Skyrim, ESO, Blades). I do want to see them return to the Ohmes and Ohmes-raht from Arena/Daggerfall just for shits and giggles, see Khajiit that look more like humans with war paint than cats.
As for Argonians, yeah the more alien look was cooler. It Bethesda really did still try to "push their creative limits" like they seem to love to state in every interview, they'd actually have a subselection in Character Creator after choosing Argonian (and hell even Khajiit) where you could choose whether you wanted digitigrade feet or not, with the choice obviously affecting ability to equip armor. Not only would that be free marketing (WOAH DUDE THEY'RE FINALLY GIVING US MULTIPLE KHAJIIT RACE SELECTION GODD HOWARD DID IT AGAIN GOTY) but having the option built in would allow Bethesda themselves to have more variety of NPCs instead of every single Argonian and Khajiit in one entire province just to happening to be the exact same variation.

I am so glad they went back to a design more like the established Daggerfall appearance for Argonians. Argonians look so unfathomably stupid in Morrowind. Went from being red eyed intimidating lizards, to goofy ass rat things that waddle around like chickens. That you Oblivion, for setting the game back on its original path and thank you Skyrim and ESO for maintaining it.

      Anonymous

With this said though, I would not mind it all if the next game allowed both Argonians and Khajiits to select which Tribe/furstock they are. ESO finally put Naga in a game and also the Bright-throats for Argonians, so its not completely unrealistic. Also showed many of the different Khajiit furstocks, so its at the very least on their mind.
