Does CODE:Veronica deserves all the hate it got?

Alfred is a man who quite clearly wants to dick down his sister. During her absence, he went mad from loneliness and his mind fractured from the stress of it. A persona of Alexia formed in his mind as a result. He doesn’t believe he is a woman; he literally thinks Alexia is there with him in real life. Alfred doesn’t even know that he dresses himself up to look like her. That’s why he freaks out when he sees his own reflection. He’s realizing that she was never there with him at all.

do you seriously think the hate for code veronica comes from the story ?

It comes from the helicopter fight
      and the nosferatu battle
and the part where you play as claire and have to run away from an unkillable zombie dude

I don't remember there being a helicopter fight at all.
Steve's "battle" on the other hand was ass. How are you supposed to not get hit once during the sequence. I know it's technically doable since I've seen a video of someone doing this but it seems like the most counter-intuitive shit to do and you're almost certain to die the first time around if you don't have some spare mixed herb/ first aid spray.

I ended up liking the game anyway, but goddamn was it hard, plus way longer than the usual old-styled RE game. The story was what kept me interested the most. Despite most people saying it was the beginning of RE becoming moronic, it was corny and crazy enough in a good way to me. The Ashford twins made for some really interesting villains and the fact they came from aristrocracy allowed for pretty good operaesque aesthetics sometimes. Felt like a Dario Argento movie to an extent.

Gameplay could be an enjoyable classic survival horror experience when it wanted to, and tedious the rest of the time.

Since we're talking about divisive/ hated RE entries, I just got RE0 discounted on ps4 and it's the one game from the main series I haven't played to completion yet, disregarding the remakes.
I remember playing it a little on my brother's gamecube a while back and making it out of the train until I got to some monkey enemies that tore my shit apart.
Didn't seem half bad back then, especially the train had good atmosphere, but I do know the traditional inventory system was ditched for a shared one with your partner and being able to leave things on the ground to pick up later. Theoritically I suppose this whole system makes for really strategic use of your ammo and inventory management but I'm guessing it also adds a whole lot of tedium and I hear it's among the hardest RE titles for it.

        Will see.

          >I don't remember there being a helicopter fight at all.
I meant the fight inside of the plane. It's a b***h unless you use those special rounds that halve an enemy's HP

Oh, the Tyrant fight. It was a b***h to do, I agree.
It was all over the place for the boss fights in the game for me. Alexia's first form went out in a matter of seconds because I had plenty of special rounds with me but then I watched a proper fight video of this boss and she has a rather developed moveset and a really cool battle theme that I would have had to restrict myself to enjoy.
Her final form is bullshit, didn't have much problem with Nosferatu, and I think the only other boss fight I felt was balanced was the worm as Chris. I don't remember there being that many bosses beyond those. The spider maybe and some mutant that later becomes a common enemy so I don't feel it really counts.

Nah, RE0 It's not hard for that, just tedious. Also you played the best part, train is fantastic, then each stage is more bland and boring than the previous one

Well I played it last night and saved last just before Rebecca has to go to some torture room to restore power and the monkey enemies appear.
It's pretty standard survival with a somewhat interesting gimmick with the character swapping so far, and even the research center has great atmosphere but tbh I'm a bit biased as I think the REmake type backgrounds are just a joy to look at.
Not many healing items, though, and that's probably where the difficulty stems from. I soon learned it's better to split off and make Billy scout out some areas first than go with your buddy and have him/her die trying to shoot enemies when avoiding them is best (I know you can make your partner not shoot and technically control him/her at the same time but it's a b***h to do).
I don't know how much more of the game there is. There was a cutscene where Birkin talked to Wesker about blowing the place up and I don't know if it's any indicator of the traditional countdown sequence coming soon. If it is, well, game's pretty meager in a lot of departments (enemy variety and bosses mainly).
I'll reserve judgement until I actually finish the game but it's not half bad for the moment.

If this isn't sarcastic, I just reached the infected bat boss in the chapel-looking building. Tried the boss 2 times before saying frick it as I was on a session of the game that tested my capacity to not die over a relatively long stretch.
The reshuffled enemy placement after the apes fricked me over a bit with items that I left scattered a bit everywhere. Thankfully it's mosly ribbons and the game is kind enough to give you those each time you reach a new type writer. I also dropped the knives. They seem way too risky to use in this one and more cumbersome than anything.

Apes are annoying enemy that wasn't balanced properly into the game. Luckily they aren't that common, you encounter them in that mid section of the game for a while and then they are gone.
You are also about the hit one of the weaker points of the game that will force you to backtrack a long way depending on the character you choose. This bit is one of the more commonly brought up "flaws" of the game.

As someone who replayed Zero a few months ago, I had a fun time a few minor gripes aside (monkeys, far more limited inventory compared to the usual RE). I last played it 10-15 years ago and a decade of Ganker and /vr/ b***hing and moaning about it made me expect a far more masochistic experience. It wasn't that bad, but it also wasn't that great.

I mostly minded how around halfway point of the game you could tell they were in a hurry to wrap it up and backgrounds start having less and less detail. The final section of the game feels like a cheap 3d game almost.

I wasn't being sarcastic, man this shithole gets people on edge huh
I never had problems with what you said because since I started the game I used the main hall and I think the observatory room too to keep all my stuff, I remember I saw monkeys had appeared in some balcony but I really didn't have a reason to go back and forth. I think the stage after the bat is cool, It's after that the settings become super boring

                Shitty excuses aside,

must be right about the apes. They just softlock you when they're in groups and are too fast jumping around relative to your character's own mobility, and that's a pain to deal with even with Billy who's more resistant. Don't know shit about the game's development beside that it started as a N64 title so maybe it was a troubled dev cycle.

About the backgrounds, did they bother touching up the allegedly bad end section ones in the remaster? I also remember something about an unlockable Wesker mode that sounded pretty fun if gimmicky.

I haven't retried the boss since my last post. Will try to do it later today, I think.
On another note, it's interesting to me to experience a part of the story/ lore that I completely missed. After Code Veronica, you can tell in this one they were trying to build up something interesting with Spencer as this big, scheming behind the scene, bad guy and his mysterious endgoal.
Funny that it ended as a dud revelation about a euginistic program for creating a race of superhumans and the trope of the scientist seeking eternal life in 5. Well at least that game had quality Wesker moments. Shame they chose to end his character there.

God forbid a survival horror game punishes you for bad ammo management or drop surprise bosses on you.
And after playing the game multiple times I can confirm you can easily kill absolutely every enemies and bosses in the game and still have plenty of ammo to spare, so I have no idea what's going on here.
the game has very nice levels and it's nice how you could choose the order of what to clear first in the island. Yet people call this "excessive backtracking"
Yeah the story is shit and Steve is a homosexual, big woop it's not like any of the games have a good story anyway
Claire calls the crossdressing troony the freak that he is and that's fantastic, unfortunately this single scene and character is why CV will never get the remake it deserves.
The only legit arguments I've seen against CV is the sloppy character switching at the end of the game, Steve's "boss" requires you to do a really weird movement trick to avoid his attacks (or take 3 sprays with you) and the 3D graphics having aged badly and yeah they did.

CODE: Veronica was released in an age where a large number of players went in blind without being spoiled by social media, youtube, online FAQs etc. Spoilers were taken seriously on forums at the time. A lot of players tried to play the game like RE2/3 where ammo falls from the sky. They binned the knife, didn't search too hard for ammo, got fricked over with the fire extinguisher, the tyrant boss fight, the post Nosferatu switch, soft locking themselves at Alexia I, the dumb glass cannon, wonky Steve "fight". CV was a very polarizing title from the outset.

Most media outlets were very positive on the DC version as it was a major step forward with the graphic fidelity and away from pre-rendered backgrounds. By the time CVX was out (Summer 2001), the graphics were stale and the PS2 ran like ass so Capcom added some Matrix Cutscenes for Wesker which knee caps Alexia power-lever and opens the door for cornball RE5.

RE3 got a B reception upon release but received a major resurgence in the age of nostalgia and speed running as it is the best playing single player distillation of the RE formula. I expect CV to get a resurgence in the coming years as the pendulum of contrarianism swings against RE3 and to the appreciation of CV's uniqueness as an RE title.

Its overly linear, spread out and back track heavy. The game's weapons lack punch, foley is weak, enemy design is inconsistent, there is way less model damage on enemies and player characters when they are hurt. It lacks the QOL upgrades RE3 brought to the controls. These factors make it a chore to replay.

It was cool to finally see an RE game with fully rendered 3D environments. Claire is one of the best protagonists and Chris is there also, I guess, also the presentation and graphics were top notch at the time. That said, the level design was too spread out and it's a pain for new players, the plot was kind of meaningless in the grand scheme of things and that Leo pastiche guy was largely disposable as a character. It was also where the original formula started to show its age, exacerbated by REmake 1 and 0, which prompted an urgent change in the basic gameplay loop.

The Last Escape is a nothing burger with a nothing character (Jill), the only thing that matters is one epilogue for a character that isn't even in the game (Leon). RECV brings back Wesker and sets the arc for RE4/5.

        You're right, people were filtered.
Had no internet at the time while being 12y/o and yet I still finished and mastered the game rather easily though. I think the game's difficulty aged badly but it wasn't a big deal back then.
Gamers today just don't want any sort of challenge

        >Its overly linear
You could choose the order of which areas to clear first, that's more choice than most classic RE titles
        >a chore to replay because muh quality of life
Oh no the characters use the strairs automatically, the whole game is ruined!
I don't agree about the weapons being bad as well, the knife is literally the most satisfying and useful one in all of the classic RE games knives, you can dual wield some guns, the explosive bolts are ridiculously powerful, you got to use a sniper for a boss, etc

          >Oh no the characters use the strairs automatically, the whole game is ruined
It is when the game that was just released prior to this didn't have that. In fact, CV as a whole controls worse than RE3

Resident Evil: Code Veronica started out as a port of Resident Evil 2 for the Sega Saturn. But Nextech who was in charge of porting the Saturn game, had issues with RE2 to the Saturn, which caused its' cancellation.I think Sega may have suggested making the game for the Dreamcast, instead. Nexttech made the Code Veronica game engine, which was essentially the RE2 game engine running with 3D environments. I almost thing Code Veronica was going to be a 3D remake of RE2, before Capcom decided to make it a new game. Code veronica was originally planned to have both Leon and Claire, with Leon being replaced by Steve Burnside. When Code Veronica was first shown off to the public, the game was treated like a technical showcase for the Dreamcast, and it was the first 'next generation' Resident Evil game. The game did get released months before the PS2. The real-time cinematics and cinematic game models were really impressive for their time. The game was one of the best looking games on the DC outside of Shenmue I and II. But when it was ported to the PS2 and Gamecube (clearly much more powerful hardware) , the game lost some of its luster, when put up against other games on those consoles. Resident Evil 2 and 3 did get Dreamcast ports, but these ports are basically the PC games running on WindowsCE.

Some of the earliest beta footage for Code Veronica shows Claire with her RE2 model, which was clearly just a place holder during development. Which was clearly some remnants left over from the RE2 Sega Saturn port.

It sucks because all the momentum you gain as Claire just vanishes when you play as Chris. Then you control Chris and run through the same locations as Claire (common in RE, I know), but the abrupt loss of Claire momentum just feels like cutting your dick off or something. Alexia is probably my favorite villain in the series, but the final fight against her is poorly design and cramped. Then you have the first person nonsense, the Steve nonsense, etc. It does deserve a lot of hate, but it's still at least a 7/10.

It was a good a game but it had a few gotcha moments that would screw over players who didn't have prior knowledge of certain events which would be every new player who wasn't using a guide.
    >you dumped the empty fire extinguisher in the metal detector bin and not the item box? lol no magnum for you gl
I'll partially forgive that one because players should have been wondering why it didn't disappear after using it but you don't find out until hours later why you need it.
    >oh you didn't know that you were switching to Chris after the nosferatu fight and you had all your weapons on Claire? lol reload your last save or severely gimp your run as Chris
    >time to switch back to Claire, I hope you have plenty of healing items for her to use in a few minutes
    >no healing items? it's okay bro just do this ridiculously hard and not obvious at all maneuver to get Steve stuck in a corner for a few seconds and you should be able to trigger the next cut scene with just a few pixels between you and Steve's ax
I know there's a few more but I can't remember them right now. I do enjoy how CV is generally more difficult than the other fixed camera RE games but CV definitely had some bullshit moments that just screwed over players without prior knowledge of the game and it rightfully gets criticized for that. The voice acting went firmly back towards RE1 on the slider scale of voice acting.

    [...]

    >troony propaganda
Are you moronic? The troony is literally one of the villains and the game does absolutely nothing to make the player sympathize with him or excuse his actions. Claire rightfully calls him a "cross dressing freak". Even his sister calls him a worthless idiot and sees him as nothing more than a pawn. The game shits all over the troony and does not give him even the slightest positive portrayal.

CV is weird because it's like a pastiche of Y2K era pop culture. You have obvious ones like the Matrix and Steve being a DiCaprio stand in but it's also full of stuff from the 98 Psycho remake, the X Files movie, Parasite Eve, and probably plenty of others I didn't catch. All it's missing is that Barenaked Ladies song from American Pie over the end credits.

Basically, it comes down to one line of dialogue spoken by Claire. the game was being developed in 1998-2000, and Alfred was basically a homage to the movie Psycho, or more specifically... the shot for shot 1998 remake of Psycho starring Anne Heche and Vince Vaughn.

Code veronica borrows heavily from the 1998 Psycho remake, the X-Files movie (1998), The Matrix/ John Woo, there is a bit of a Juon references.

It was a big Hollywood release, but the movie was panned by critics for being a "why did they even make this?" kind of movie. It was a shot for shot remake, that brought nothing new to the table. Despite being competently made. Siskel & Ebert were like; "whats the point? Go rent the original Hitchwiener movie. Two thumbs down."
