Do you think people like this have normal minds?
Like, does he lie awake at night and think about the cringey stuff he did when he was 12?

No. Only someone will complete conviction could through shit like this. These are the same types that build churches by hand or go actually belive God is talking. Same types that kill during football matches or spend 16 hours a day defending Sony products on Ganker.

It’s the same extremity of conviction it’s not the same kind. Those monks have a truly existential conviction whereas football hooligans are barely conscious of it, theirs is basically just an outlet for tribalism now that they can’t use it for conquering or raiding sports team fandom is nationalism for people stuck inside modernity

That dude was 109, I'm not sure he'd be able to remember what he did when he was 12.

He looks like that because he's 109? I thought he was a monk pursuing that method of living mummification.

Shit, I thought the same. I was actually thinking "This guy looks just about ready for entombment".

What, OP or the monks? I think the whole point about being a monk is you live a life wholly devoid of cringe worthy memories.

Undead in my setting are created by the echos of memories, dreams, and emotions left behind by departed souls. Good souls normally take more of their echos with them, and most people have regrets or negative emotions so evil undead are more common. People dying at peace can create good undead, however most of them are fragile and can become corrupted if they gain regrets of their own. Others struggle to form their own experiences, blissfully and unnervingly positive in all situations.

Yeah. Necromancy is just a force and there's no cycle of rebirth or whatever, so if a particular soul is plucked from the ether and stuffed back into its corpse, that person's still there. If a good person gets raised as an undead, they remain a good person. Perhaps a bit insane and unstable, with some memory loss, but they don't suddenly become monsters. That can happen over time, though.
It makes necromancy more of a last resort for bad guys, and makes prison graveyards and other sites where less than honorable men die in droves particularly valuable. Underlings are also pretty recyclable. And there are still mindless undead, where the "pluck the soul from the ether" bit is skipped, and it's little more than a marionette corpse.

    One of them does.
The forces of evil unleashed mass-spreading waves of magic to raise undead slaves, but some of the skeletons who came up from the ground had a sense of justice so strong that they overcame the mind control, and fight for good.

nope, all undead are unaligned (True Neutral) since they lack free will

Not so much 'good' undead, as much as the vampiric emperor of the eternal night has gotten a peak behind the cosmic curtain and knows that if he plays his 'assigned' part in the end of the world, it's as much the end for him as every mortal, and so secretly helps the heroes against the greater evils. He's fairly content to rule his !not roman empire

My setting has virtually zero undead. Undeath is a vile, putrid abomination and even demons recoil in disgust at it.

In any setting that has undead, I tend to make it a resource available to all factions on that level: i.e. if evil gods can send people back, good gods can too and vice versa although some deities may opt not to because of their personal inclinations. Archliches in particular are massively fun to run and can smooth over a lot of bumps in a Generic Fantasyland(tm) setting.

My modern Southern Gothic setting, OTOH, just has ghosts that are either an empty (and thus neutral) echoes of past events or are actual stranded human souls that have whatever alignment/personality they did in life. There's vampires of various types (some clearly evil, some merely sanctimonious) but they're not really undead they're more "differently alive." "Serpent and the Rainbow" style zombies, too, but again those are living humans that have been magically lobotomized, not actual corpses.

    Good undead? Sure.
    Good necromancers? No, absolutely not.

Sure. But most undead (by population, not type) are mindless and thus neutral. There's 3 and a half groups of undead. Mindless undead (like zombies) are neutral. Voluntary undead (like liches) generally remain whatever they were in life, but can change just like the living. Revenants (like phantoms) which remain what they were in life and cannot change. And the living dead (like vampires), which aren't actually undead but usually possessed corpses or profaned spectres and thus get categorized with undead.

A pretty high number of people in my setting are "dead", in the sense that their original bodies or spirits were destroyed.
That doesn't stop them from moving around and doing stuff, but surviving such a process means no children can be produced.
People who have replaced either are in the same boat.

There's something about the originals together that permit one to create new, True Life.

Of course, anyone can just slap together some twigs with twine and spit, then impose a spirit in there. But it's incapable of procreation.

Some of the Dead are good, some are bad. Most are both, depending on who you ask and the circumstances.

Some cultures keep mummified corpses around and cast Speak With Dead on them. It's a good way to keep records.

actually, kind of. They're more benign than good. But basically they're the ancient dead of the region's past inhabitants who rise each night (even if they've been destroyed) from their burial mounds and... Really just sort of do a zombie-like iteration of what they had done in life. Gathering, hunting, etc.

It's still creepy as frick though and the settlers and even natives don't really like running into them. But they don't attack even if attacked.

The noble dead of the real may be called up in times of dire need to aid their living brothers fend off the does of their home. These undead, despite their sometimes grim appearance are steadfast comrades in arms, joining in chants, encouraging their brethren, and harassing the foe. They can continue to be called up even in states of advanced decay, but after a time their bodies will be too far decayed to house their spirits and they will pass on permanently to the Eternal Kingdom to await their loved ones.
Legends speaks of a Titanic battle in the future that may herald the end of the world. A battle with hordes of the damned and forsaken that will be more than any mortal army can withstand. On that day, even the long passed souls in the Eternal Kingdom will be unleashed on the foe in a desperate battle to secure a future for the living descendants of the Eternal Kingdom.

    Sort of.
The Deathless Princess is one of the various "Gods" presiding over death and takes the souls and decaying bodies of others to occupy the southern Deadlands which is a vast, and slowly spreading, waste without any life. Her cause is that eventually all life turns to death, but in death there is no Need and Nothing to sustain. She is a loving and caring sort who just wants everyone to hurry up and embrace the "right kind of Death" with her so they can live forever as desert-mummies and skeletons and not care if the world dies, because they're already dead.
As one of the Eidelons, players can commune with her to seek "favor" which grants supernatural abilities, up to and including being unkillable by virtue of zombification. But if you lose her favor by not doing what she asks, same as any Eidelon, you can lose those abilities. Then you're just Normal Dead, and the other two Death Gods will decide what happens to you next.
