Because Windows sucks ass since 8 and GabeN knows it. Only normalfags and Ganker Anons (who are smart enough to debloat OS) use Windows. Also Linux gamescope (virtual monitor) is life-changing for older games.
Say you have a game with a limited resolution because it's old, like 800x600 res old. With gamescope you can just set parameters and it scales up. This is different from having to write a widescreen hack like with old Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 before it got taken and spruced up.
can games cope be used in reverse like telling indieslop with retarded devs who have no idea how to make a resolution selector in their shitty game that it should run in specific resolution lower than the base monitor one?
when are they going to release it as steam feature and not just linux exclusive?

Microsoft's goal is that Windows systems become more like the Xbox, not so much the Xbox becoming more like Windows.

Okay.
Software being open-source is good for me even if corporations also realize the advantages of it. I'm not going to go back to fucking Windows just because Microsoft donated money to the Linux Foundation or whatever.
>Paying for windows licensing. >Pushing the cost onto the consumer >Even if you don't want to use Windows
Why are you anti-consumer? If you want Windows on deck, get it yourself.
Cool, that has nothing to do with my post though. I'm just pointing out that forcing a consumer to pay for a windows license when they can get it themselves without inconveniencing everyone else is retarded.
Windows licenses aren't free, why would you want to spend an extra $60 for it to come with windows? Just install it yourself and use a key from an old laptop or some shit
>Windows licenses aren't free
Pirates seem to forget this, they've been used to not paying for windows for a long, long time. Also the free upgrades to 10 and 11 depended on having an existing windows OS installed which to no one's surprise are actually pirated versions, some of which go back to the 7-to-10 windows upgrade. And guess what's in Ganker's /fwt/ thread? Activators for pirated windows. A good thing the board is too tiny and makes no money from it or else we'd get lawyers up Hiroshimoot's ass.
> pirates seem to forget this
we are very aware of this retard. its why we pirate. the average consumer doesnt know jack shit about what an operating system is let alone that it costs money even in OEM devices.
People that pirate windows are unironically a minority these days, the large majority of normalcucks just buy online keys instead which are 20 bucks a pop at MOST and last forever even through windows upgrades like 10 to 11 because running a basic bitch script is too much work for them.
> Do everything possible to make games compatible with linux > add a 100$ price tag to the machine just so retards dont have to install an os they might not even want
would be funny for the seethe it would cause but retarded for valve.
Linux is only usable when millionaire companies use it as a base to build their proprietary non hippie troon software, same with android

All of my games work on mine though?
Proton really does work like magic. I was expecting some kind of compatibility issues, but I haven’t had any trouble with any game made after 2000 or so.
Even then, it seems like just about every game has some sort of fix. Only ones I haven’t found a solution for yet are Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force and Solider of Fortune, but since those run on the Quake II engine a solution likely does exist.
the only one I can't get going is Chronicles of Riddick, which isn't even sold on Steam anymore. When I threw streets of rage remake onto it and it just worked i shit myself.
You probably had the stupid stretched logo thing that I had for Elite Force. I had to install the Heroic Games Launcher and use a specific version of Proton-GE installed through Protonup-QT, I forget which one, but after that it worked perfectly with no problems.
I'm thinking about finally taking the plunge. Isn't HD space an issue with decks? My friend who has one said he got the smaller size and just connected an external HD to it.
Also how is controller support? Do Switch controllers drift the way they do on PC?
>Isn't HD space an issue with decks?
The smallest size they're making now is 256GB which is more than enough for most games especially if you add in a big SD Card. The old 64GB model could be a problem, but a lot of people bought those just to upgrade the SSD.
The largest new version makes getting 3TB easy, and the mid range gets 2.5TB easily.
>Also how is controller support?
Controller support on GNU/Linux based OSes like SteamOS is generally better than Windows.
>Do Switch controllers drift the way they do on PC?
Steam Decks are PCs, they just don't run Windows. I haven't heard of any issues using Switch Pro controllers on GNU/Linux based OSes, but stick drift is often a hardware issue in the controller.
>stick drift is often a hardware issue in the controller
It works perfectly on the Switch, the calibration shows no issues but when I connect it to my PC the mouse is always slowly drifting to the right. I've seen a lot of people on steam forums having the same issue. I calibrated it every way possible and it doesn't go away.
Are you calibrating using Steam controller settings in windows? I have no issues on linux here. Tried it on windows once with gyro enabled and it kept moving the mouse south on me albeit very, very slowly.
256 + an SD card is generally enough. I went with a 512+512GB SD card, and I'm only really getting to the point now where I'm thinking about upgrading to a 1 or 2TB SD Card.
>256GB is nothing
Especially when one game now can be over 100GB. We had brick sized 1.5TB HDs 15 years ago what the fuck are they smoking making 64GB versions?
I mean, you can absolutely stick a 2tb nvme drive in a steam deck if you want to. For the price of a 512gb LCD steam deck you could buy a 64 gb steam deck + 2tb nvme + 1tb micro sd card.
Don’t get the 64GB version, or else replace it immediately. You can never have too much storage, but 512 works for me. I also have an SD card for emulation and reserve the SSD for PC games.
My PS4 controller works fine when hooked up to a monitor, but I haven’t tried my Pro Controller. Otherwise the controls on the device work well. Community controller configurations for games that weren’t build around controllers can be hit and miss but generally work well or at least as well as can be expected.
And of course you can hook up a keyboard and mouse if you dock it.
it just werks, i use w11 on my desktop. i own a steamdeck and it works fantastic, i love steam os and linux in general but i cant get jiggy with linux on my main rig tho.
Verified and playable both mean the game works perfectly fine, the difference is supposed to be in how console-like it feels on the Deck, eg. with verified games there's no need to use the onscreen keyboard, the game doesn't have a launcher or settings dialog you have to click through with a mouse, controls are set up out of the box and so on.
there's rumors that Windows 12 will have some sort of subscription system
the question is will it be for the whole things or just for "premium packages"
Microsoft spooked Valve back in 2016 when they tried pushing UWP, and that UWP apps would only be allowed to be installed from the Microsoft Store by default. Even timmy tencent bitched about it
But unlike timmy, Valve actually decided to do something about it
Microsoft already experimented with a MS Store only version called Windows RT. It didn't take many brain cells to figure out what Microsoft was trying to do
It was actually back in 2012 when Valve had a behind-closed doors meeting with Valve. We don't know exactly what happened at that meeting, but the week after it Valve demoed Steam for Linux to Phoronix for the first time.
The rumors are that Microsoft tried to buy Valve (probably something they do at every meeting), but more importantly Microsoft unveiled their vision of the future of the PC as a closed platform fully under Microsoft's control. With some kind of deal for PC game developers to have a little fiefdom of their own within Microsoft's store ecosystem getting preferential treatment.
Gaben obviously turned that down, the rumors suggest Sweeeny took it.
most likely it's going to have both one time payment and subscription based versions
if i had to guess it would be subscriptions for enterprise and otp for regular people
I think the whole "windows sucks on handhelds" is greatly exaggerated. I have an Ally and I haven't had any problems with it. It even runs standalone executables.
It's fine until you want to do something that isn't Steam related. Then it becomes the usual "just jump throught these 20 hoops and it'll maybe sorta kinda work" that Linux is known for.
>install bottles >make bottle >install non-steam launcher in your bottle, using bottles' UI >download and play your nonsteam vidya
How is that 20 hoops?
Anon, you can build your own. Deck uses RDNA 2 GPU + Zen 3 CPU in a custom APU, so grab a 6750xt + 5800x3d and I guarantee it will last you longer than a Deck. What's harder to find is a controller scheme like the Deck, but you could always just buy a switch or sony controller for the gyro.
You can do it yourself. Grab the iso recovery image from the steam recovery page and ignore the warning about muh hardware compatibility. You'll still have the same problem as the Deck does when it comes to the desktop experience: it wipes everything that isn't your library after every update, so use flatpaks for non-gaming.
Do these things have an HDMI out? I want to gayme on the big TV. And if so, is latency an issue and are there ways to reduce it so fighting games aren't unplayable?
You can buy a $15 USB-C hub on amazon that has HDMI + power + multiple USB ports. I've never noticed latency when using it docked to my TV but you could always just hardwire your fightan stick into the hub if it's that much of a concern
Nigga what. Remote controlled devices existed a long time ago. Fucking Tesla probably had patents on this shit. Those 1980s remote controlled toys? They're cut down versions of military concepts. Slapping a screen on it to play Pong doesn't mean war's changed.
Damn nigga you dense. I'm saying the IDEA of remote controlled shit isn't new. Steam Deck being used for this is no different from an RC toy it just has a fancy screen you can watch your ugly face on.
Because Valve has been divesting from Microsoft so they don't have all their eggs in one basket + moving away from the windows ecosystem. The evidence is the Steam Deck in front of you. It doesn't run windows.
that's not how it works
they can want to ditch wangblows as much as possible and that still won't change the fact that this won't be happening anywhere soon and hogging pretty important features is not how you entice people into moving over
>hogging pretty important features is not how you entice people into moving over
Fox, sour grapes, etc. Exclusive features is how they entice you out of the microsoft plantation, and as far as I know this is the most important one yet.
Anyway there's already been plenty of evangelical fanatical preaching from linux fags especially dumbass arch fags to move over, you don't need more being bombarded in your face. It gets tiring.
>use ROG Ally on the battlefield >elite 420noscope hacker gets into your handheld >thanks to M$ being a vulnerable piece of shit hacker exploits some zero day to get access >lol no controller for you fag >turns turrets around to shoot your division to pieces
Yeah, fuck Microsoft.
it doesn't
it plays a good chunk of them
but a good chunk of those "platinum" games on protonDB or that are listed as compatible by steam are not actually compatible and instead require some obscure or PITA random github installs
if I wanted to fuck around with incompatible hardware and software while wasting my limited free time I'd just become a linux tranny
>working Nvidia drivers
Next year, middle of summer is my guess as to stable Nvidia drivers. Nvidia can't stay on Xorg anymore so they're migrating to Wayland.

That actually fixed it for about 20 minutes then it came right back.
Turn off gyro completely then. Or don't let Steam have the controller active outside of gaming.

I'm using the switch pro controller. No drift so far.
Ideally you'd upgrade the SSD, they're pretty affordable if you do your homework. I still think 256GB is nothing.
256 + an SD card is generally enough. I went with a 512+512GB SD card, and I'm only really getting to the point now where I'm thinking about upgrading to a 1 or 2TB SD Card.
I just really hate the idea of flushing games in and out over and over.
SDs are fucking slow
On Windows yes.
This, otherwise adding micro-sds wouldn't be recommended for more space on the Nintendo Switch.
i thought so too, turns out it's just how Windows handles them.

>Valve had a behind-closed doors meeting with Valve
horrifying
Valve had a meeting with Microsoft obviously.
most likely it's going to have both one time payment and subscription based versions
if i had to guess it would be subscriptions for enterprise and otp for regular people
I think the whole "windows sucks on handhelds" is greatly exaggerated. I have an Ally and I haven't had any problems with it. It even runs standalone executables.
It's not so much "windows sucks" as "steamOS is actually better in 99% of use cases."
It's fine until you want to do something that isn't Steam related. Then it becomes the usual "just jump throught these 20 hoops and it'll maybe sorta kinda work" that Linux is known for.
Get flatpaks for non-gaming stuff. The selection is still pitiful though.
OLED, hardware got a refresh and you'll want that, saves money over time.
>install bottles
>make bottle
>install non-steam launcher in your bottle, using bottles' UI
>download and play your nonsteam vidya
How is that 20 hoops?
GAYBEN YOU FAT FUCK I WILL LITERALLY PAY MORE FOR A LINUX PC THAN A WINDOWS ONE IF IT HAD STEAM OS PLEASE SHIT ONE OUT
Anon, you can build your own.
>IF IT HAD STEAMOS
is the key differentiator there
literally just install arch with kde and use steam in big picture mode
it's the same shit
I think he wants Valve to handhold his repositories so he doesn't brick his PC with an update.
You can connect USB-C to HDMI I believe.
Poorfag here. Do I buy the 64gb lcd or the OLED? Is it that big of a difference?
>BLABOO
>HAVE YOU TRIED MICROSOFT OFFICE? CLICK HERE!
Yeah why isn't Windows 11 on my Steam Deck.
>linux
>gaming
HAHAHA
hello jeeter rakesh
Ganker does not allow for frogposting
now end your life in the ganges
>upgrade ssd
>try to launch the backup
>none of the games launch
Why do I have to redownload everything?
Did you forget to verify the integrity of the game files + point your steam library to the new ssd?
I did, yeah moved them from the Steam Deck menu, but they never launch from there for some reason.
Nevermind they launch on desktop mode
Edit: they stutter, what the fuck
Turns out steam changed the settings.
War, war never changes.
>posts picture of war literally fucking changing but is too much of an epic catchphrase repeater to realize it
bazinga!
Nigga what. Remote controlled devices existed a long time ago. Fucking Tesla probably had patents on this shit. Those 1980s remote controlled toys? They're cut down versions of military concepts. Slapping a screen on it to play Pong doesn't mean war's changed.
>steam decks existed in the 80s
nigga what
Damn nigga you dense. I'm saying the IDEA of remote controlled shit isn't new. Steam Deck being used for this is no different from an RC toy it just has a fancy screen you can watch your ugly face on.
Wasnt the point of the quote that war is just as shit no matter how fancy the tech is?
why valve isn't interested to make a very useful feature available for most of their consumer base?
It gets tiring.
> bluetooth
> linux drivers
> network adapter
its all right there you just gotta make it.
It runs Rance 7, Civilization 4 and Vicky 2. You don't need more than that
this runs better than any windows ever will LOL
imagine still using NTFS on 2023
>use ROG Ally on the battlefield
>elite 420noscope hacker gets into your handheld
>thanks to M$ being a vulnerable piece of shit hacker exploits some zero day to get access
>lol no controller for you fag
>turns turrets around to shoot your division to pieces
Yeah, fuck Microsoft.
It can, but the thing is Valve can't make their Steam OS experience on Windows.
works on my machine
>Doesn't run Windows
Microsoft is quickly working on a portable version of Win 11
Just use a Point-of-Sale version that retail uses on their terminals and bake in whatever drivers are necessary for gaming.
Does anyone have the picture of the trojan horse? You know the one, with linux support inside
I seriously hope Valve does some trade in offers, I want to get that sweet oled but these months are crazy with things I have to pay
Honestly I hope modding existing Decks is possible (I heard it might not).
>SteamOS 3.0 for Windows
What?
it doesn't
it plays a good chunk of them
but a good chunk of those "platinum" games on protonDB or that are listed as compatible by steam are not actually compatible and instead require some obscure or PITA random github installs
if I wanted to fuck around with incompatible hardware and software while wasting my limited free time I'd just become a linux tranny
Skill issue
SteamOS 3.0 for Windows with working Nvidia drivers when?
>SteamOS 3.0 for Windows with working Nvidia drivers when?
>SteamOS 3.0 for Windows
lol not happening.
fuck me, brain fart, guess i should be sleeping
meant for pc
>SteamOS 3.0 for Windows
>working Nvidia drivers
Next year, middle of summer is my guess as to stable Nvidia drivers. Nvidia can't stay on Xorg anymore so they're migrating to Wayland.
It does, and better than on your spyware ridden shitindows.
Yes, because it runs all my games and I have thousands of em. Unless you're a pleb who plays garbage, you know the type.
Kinda glad I waited for the oled to come out, personally didn't anticipate it, but that's doesn't matter much to me.
Game's ass but it has the best outfits out of the three.
