How much can vampires truly even feel love? They actually don't feel lust in the way humans do, so logically they can focus on deeper feelings of intimacy but I feel like they're just dead to humanity

They can. Depending on your humanity you can even have (and even enjoy) sex without help of touch of life. You need to have ridiculously high humanity for it though. As for platonic love, vampires have "touchstones" - humans whom they've grown attached to. These touchstones are like anchors who keep their humanity from plummeting.

It's rare, but vampires can feel honest and true love. They can also feel lust but the lore keeps going back and forth on it.

Even a lower humanity vampire could love truly, at least until V5 gatekept all the love and horny behind high humanity. They might be a shitty person in most regards, slowly sliding to beastdom, but they can still love someone. It can often be the only thing keeping some vampires from going fully bestial. You know, sappy melodramatic forbidden love shit.

I'm wondering if we will get references to other supernaturals the same way we got depictions of wraiths and werewolves. I'd be fine with just those 2 again, but a depiction of changeling or a demon would be really cool. I'd like to interact with the fae, mages and even the garou on cordial terms. Speaking to wraiths about the deadlands could be fascinating especially if you don't know anything about that particular bit of world of darkness. I'd want any of that for at least just one side quest. But this being 5th edition, I'm sure most of that is all off the table.

Yes. Although there was probably at least a few centuries between the 2nd and 3rd gen. Experience matters a shitload for powerlevel as well.

So generation is just an upper limit to how powerful someone can get?

          Anonymous

          Hard mechanics for VtM? Kinda.

Generation determines three things, maximum blood pool, blood per turn, and trait cap. Being able to hold more blood is good, but it's not like you're more efficient, you need to drink more blood to actually use that advantage. Blood per turn is really strong if you're in a physical fight, because it lets you pump your attributes much quicker to flatten someone physically but beyond a physical fight it doesn't do much. Trait cap is where generation starts really mattering but you don't get to go past 5 dots until you're 7th gen and up. And you need the exp to actually raise those attributes so without age or skill it won't matter as much. Generation is also really good for dominate because you're immune to dominate from anyone with a higher generation than yours.

So while a strict upgrade for everyone, being embraced 7th gen doesn't mean you can start kicking everyone's ass immediately. In fact a young vampire with a potent generation is walking diablerie-bait.

            Anonymous

            >In fact a young vampire with a potent generation is walking diablerie-bait.
When you diablerize someone do you also gain some of their traits and abilities? Or do you just lower your generation? Is it the same to diablerize an ancient 6th gen or a newly made one?

              Anonymous

              Checked.

Rules as written diablerie is actually pretty underwhelming. You just gain one generation and MAYBE some disciplines but only temporarily.

Which is odd because the lore implies that a successful diablerie can take you up to your victim's level regardless of how many generations between them, and take some of their disciplines. You're not going to get their attributes or skills, though. Just steal some of, but rarely all of, their supernatural power.

                Anonymous

Rules as written, yes. Like I said, it's weird how bad it is in the mechanics.

Lore? Nobody's actually successfully eaten an Antediluvian except Troile probably. A 200 year old like him would've gotten taken over by the Antediluvian and worn like a cheap suit.

The thing about Tabletop is the GM can ignore shit as appropriate. So I wouldn't put too much stock in that. The written limitations were probably a good thing as even then you'd see a lot of players viewing diablerie as some kind of alternative character progression goal rather than a storytelling tool.

That's it though. Everyone looks at Smiling Jack like he was just some troublesome drifter. Even Lacroix speaks about him with contempt, like he's an irritating hobo and nothing more. But spending time with Jack makes you realize that he's a lot smarter than he looks. He uses people's judgement of his outward appearance and attitude to have them underestimate him, even Lacroix. I could easily see him emailing you messages talking about chess and then walking back into the Anarchs bar and hanging out listening to Lecher Bitch like any other meathead.

He's smart, but that doesn't mean he'd give two shits about the highfalutin' rich boy game that is Chess. His crassness isn't an act, that's him. The same pirate who was too violent to ever make it past Mate and who took the royal pardon only to kill a rich boy in a bar fight a few months later. He's smart as a whip, but Chess metaphors seem like the kind of thing he'd loudly mock to the entire room.

                >Chess metaphors seem like the kind of thing he'd loudly mock to the entire room.
Exactly! That's exactly the impression he gives his enemies (and friends). You would never suspect it of him. This is a guy who managed to convince a city full of vampires that an ancient vampire was about to bust out and murder them, and who eventually managed to sneak a giant bomb literally under the nose of Sebastian Lacroix. He's cunning and smart enough to me to be the one sending the emails.
                >His crassness isn't an act, that's him.
Yes, but I suspect at times it's overplayed for effect on others. Enough of his dialogue with you is sincere and honest enough, without being crass for crassness' sake.

I don't think it's impossible, but I think the theory that it's Grout is a stretch from Malkavian fans who want to see his hand in everything behind the scenes.
I also suspect it's Jack since he's the only one who has "known" the player from the start. I seriously doubt it was Grout sending you the first emails you got when you don't even interact with his part of the story until the last third of the game or so. Jack wanted to use you to make sure the sarcophagus got to Lacroix, but wanted to subtly warn you not to be in the room when it did.

I've read his tabletop lore. He really, really isn't the type for chess metaphors. Nor does he have anything to gain from them. Cryptic bullshit is Malkavian 101.

Caine performing that murder introduced that type of evil into the world. That event even got the Fallen angels, now demons, into thinking what sort of sick shit they could do to humanity since they were all so much more powerful than us. If Caine never introduced murder into the world, some of the most powerful and evil entities, the earthbound, would never have corroded human history and progress in all the evil ways they had up to the modern day.

That's not really the point. The idea that what Caine did isn't as bad as flesh crafting a family into furniture is inaccurate, as far as world of darkness logic goes, since Caine murdering Abel opened the door to all that horrible shit and directly inspired demons to commit the atrocities that shaped the world (if darkness) into what it is now.

Nobody knows for certain. The Irad purging himself of evil story isn't clear what that actually means. Maybe he's Irad's Beast or a Bane-possessed human that was embraced by Enoch. There's also other stories, such as that he was a Mage. I've never heard the theory that he's something like an Earthbound, but The Eldest did have some sort of relationship with Kupala, an Earthbound in the Carpathians. Some say Kupala gave the clan Vicissitude but I find it more likely he's responsible for Koldunic Sorcery.

He's just an asshole. Some theorize Ventru kicked him out of the Second City for being a cunt, some Tzimisce claim he left way back when the First City was around, he wound up in the Carpathians to avoid the Flood, and his curse isn't from Caine but from using that soil to survive the flood. Some even think Vicissitude IS the Eldest, and all who practice it shall be devoured by him come Gehenna.

          So normal Antediluvian schizo shit.

Yeah... I really don't care for WoD's take on Dracula and the Tzimisce sometimes suffer from needing to be tied to him. I like their lore the most when they feel like they can do their own thing.

Book Dracula struck me as either the least subtle Ventrue, a Lasombra, or the classiest Gangrel.

I think 1e had Dracula authoring some texts, with his clan being completely ambiguous, because like you said he could fit in almost any of the original 7.
Every major Clan needs to be tied to a time and a place, something to give the player the general idea of what the Clan is
                The Ventrue have Rome
The Tremere have Imperial Austria and so on
It's an idea of what the clan is. It's weird that the Tzimisce, who have an antidiluvian that claims primogeniture, and whose entire mentality is that of superiority and ascension over the rest of kindred, have their time and place be early modern eastern europe.
                Like, why not Babylon?

Yeah I really liked 1e's Dracula authored opening. The 1e core is probably the peak atmosphere the tabletop ever achieved even if the lore is half baked and the mechanics are completely busted.
Though I don't think every clan needs to be tied to a time and place. The Ventrue may have been insanely powerful in Rome but they've been in the halls of most great Empires because that's sort of what they do. Plus too much region-locking clans and you get "all Lasombra are latin" , "Brujah are the black people clan", and "all Tzimisce are romanian" as stereotypes even if they're not true.

I like the Eldest as this timeless thing, completely inhuman.

I don't think they were going for the book dracula, I think they were going for the actual vlad tepes. which very much tracks as a tzimisce with the ramming blunt stakes up peoples asses through their throats enough times to make a garden of them thing.

By the time they decided to give him any lore, yes. But I don't really care for it myself.

                >Though I don't think every clan needs to be tied to a time and place.
A Clan needs a general identity, and that can only come from a time and a place.
It gives solidity to what the general idea of the clan is.
It doesn't mean it's fixed and all encompassing, but it does fit most.
It's simply unrealistic that the Clans wouldn't have an apex in a region and in a certain time and every clan proliferated equally everywhere at the same time

Exactly evenly, no. But "Ventrue = Roman" is too broad a brush. Many clans represent archetypes, or the different sides of vampirism. They often step on each other's toes. "Lords" or "Vampire as evil elite" isn't locked to a single place or time. Neither is "Vampire as tortured artist" or "the sexy ones".

It's why clans rely more and more on ethnic gimmicks as they got invented. Ravnos, Assamite, Giovanni, they all came later to the game than the Cam 7 or even the Sabbat 2.

The marks get harder to perceive over time, and the Camarilla doesn't actually care unless you get caught.

Plus if he actually stole even a fraction of an Antediluvian's power nobody in LA could have stopped him. Still a dumb plan though. By the third suicide mission the fledgeling aced he should have pivoted to blood bonding them and using them as a blunt implement to take over the city rather than keep trying to kill them.

            Anonymous

Kinda. Blood Bonding is sort of like making another vampire feel affection for you. It can spiral into them wanting a deeper bond, and there's three levels of it. At the third level you're pretty much sucking the ass of your master as hard as you can.

              Anonymous

Yep. The blood bond works on Vampires too, though unlike ghouls they get nothing out of it. It's really hard to trick someone into drinking from you three times, each on a different night, but the Camarilla sometimes blood bonds vampires to Prince/Sheriff/Primogen as a punishment. Since LaCroix can dominate you, there wouldn't be anything stopping him from just blood bonding the fledgeling who he was technically within his rights to execute.

The blood bond does fade if not renewed for a year and a day, but when you're stage 3 blood bound it's near impossible to refuse further drinks when offered them.

very interesting and very true that LaCroix logically could have done so. i guess its one of those things that would just make the story unplayable

There's a lot of things he could've done to just win, yeah, but as you said at that point there wouldn't be a game to play.

but that's kinda his character, if lacroix was the type to take the safe bet in general there wouldn't be much of a story either.

          True
By the time the Hollywood part comes around, Lacroix should have really realized that he just got a killing machine directly into his lap for basically no cost.

If it was actually an Antedilluvian I imagine that there would be a lot more that happened, given that 3rd, 4th, and sometimes even 5th can kind of break the rules. And given that other Kindred that have devoured an Antedilluvian basically become an Antedilluvian themselves, and given he was already a Ventrue, it could have had an interesting impact on whichever clan it was the Antedilluvian belonged to, and any vampires that he had sired, and potentially the entire Ventrue clan.

I think it would make sense to have a system where the bigger the delta between generations, the bigger the reduction in generation. Somethin like (diablerizer's gen-diablered gen)/2 rounded up. So if a 12th gen diablerizes an 7th gen he becomes 9th gen.

Ask yourself if there really is anything left to "fix" after over a decade of work on it. The author is an attention whore writing fanfiction into the game and introducing changes to the basic patch just to push them to the plus patch when he's called out.

How even? Does he leave random lore notes eveywhere?

I mean fanfiction as in his own interpretation of what the developers "meant" to do, often based on little more than a hunch. Looking at the newest changes it seems like he again "restored" and "fixed" things that he introduced himself in past versions. The full list of changes bundled with the mod is insane. He's been doing it for years, he's very active online on forums and such, and I guess it brings him satisfaction to work on the game and be praised for every release. I can't imagine the boner he got when Chris Avellone shouted him out in his article about VTMB 2.

I don't follow the UP closely anymore, since there's now a patch called SMP that's closer to an actual vanilla patch. The vanilla game after its patches really wasn't that unplayable and there are a lot of little things the UP changed over the years that make it a different experience.

            >since there's now a patch called SMP that's closer to an actual vanilla patch
There's another alternate patch? I remember there was one before, which lead to massive drama and was the reason for wesp splitting his patch into basic and plus.

              Anonymous

Yeah, honestly the patch drama around this game is really awful. There was the True Patch but I don't think many people use it any more.
The Standard Mod Patch is new and the author tries to sidestep the drama by not shitting on anyone else, just saying he likes the vanilla game as it was shipped and wants to make a patch that actually limits itself to fixing bugs. He's probably as autistic or more as the other patch guys, but at least the autism seems well-intentioned (he writes a bunch of documentation about his changes and vision, which is a good thing).

It's like with anything else. At a certain point you need to consider something finished and then only work on keeping it running. Otherwise you start overwriting good parts just to have something to do.

Wesp has claimed he's simply continuing where the devs left off. I'm sure on some level he wants to change so much that he can consider everything in the game "his" in some way. He's trying to Diablerize VtMB.

If I'm thinking of the right whispers in the warrens, they were meant to evoke scuttling Nosferatu watching you from the shadows as you make your way around, but somehow he conflated them with "Malkavian whispers." They were placed there for a reason. But modders who try to "recreate the developer's original vision" always know better than to leave what the devs put in the shipped game alone.

      >the fledgling seems like a good guy so he doesnt want him to get blown up
      >his loyalties aren't 100% known yet so maybe he tells Lacroix, which will INFURIATE him and end up with a blood hunt on Jack, and likely also Beckett because he found out and didn't tell Lacroix, as well as an all out war against the anarchs.
      >better just scare him away from opening it
POSSIBILITY 2: Beckett didn't know about the bomb
      >assuming Beckett knows everything we do about messerach and nothing else, a LOT of the shit surrounding the sarcophagus and messerach himself adds up to "possibly a very old vampire in this box," if not an actual antediluvian, at least a mesthuselah. That is a dangerous proposition regardless of Lacroix's plans towards it, so get as far away as you can. It's also possible he came to the conclusion that Messerach WASNT a vampire and realizes Lacroix is going to go fucking MENTAL when he realizes he's completely fucked himself and the LA cammies over for absolutely no gain. Either way it's not safe to be in the room when that shit gets opened.

      >and why was he so deeply terrified of a bunch of bombs?
Beckett's thing is neutrality. It's why he's accepted if not welcomed everywhere, he genuinely only wants to study vampiric history and never gets involved in the power struggles.

          >A popular theory among some fans is that Grout would not leave a skeleton after his Final Death, suggesting a younger vampire was killed in his place. (Or that the creators of the game are under no obligation to follow every single rule in the VTM's book.) This theory makes no sense for several reasons: 1) no young vampire you kill in the game leaves a skeleton so the creators did not follow these rules, 2) Grout wasn't that old to begin with, he was probably embraced when Dr. Freud was still alive, 3) he would never have left his wife open to attack while he himself was hiding and 4) his presumed killer would have to make sure that they got the right vampire otherwise the whole deal behind this would be in danger. Therefore it's most likely that the skeleton was indeed Grout's.

I dunno who you're quoting but that isn't a very good debunk. 1 and 2) Every vampire in the game fully ashes upon final death, Grout would be a pile just like the dozens of shovelheads that crumble to ash. 3) Grout specifically mentions taking "extra precautions" to secure his wife's safety. Though she's probably been dead for a long time in his crazy mind that's probably what the glass is for. To keep her "safe" while he's gone. 4) My version of the theory is that Ming Xiao, the would be assassin got dementated into thinking she killed him, securing her deal with LaCroix.

This, the later games nerf Kain's power level significantly for gameplay contrivance purposes, but he was insanely powerful even in BO 1. Don't people basically consider Kuei-jin non canon these days because they were basically a blend of different Asian cultures into one band of basically yellow vampires?

        Anonymous

        Based Ox isn't a Kuei-Jin fortunately.

And yeah, it has its defenders but the actual KotE book is bad. The Kuei-Jin themselves are poorly thought out and Asia is magical so it's the only place in the world with something other than vampires! Even in Bloodlines they're frankly the weakest part of the game's story, and bloodlines mostly avoids the worst parts of their lore.

V5 has soft-retconned them, and for as much as I hate V5 it doesn't bug me. Lots of people have started defending the Kuei-Jin because of this. Again, I hate V5 but I'm not gonna pretend the Kuei-Jin were ever good.

While we at it. I saw that Alfabusa essay about WOD

Apparently that Circus book "aged poorly". Is there a specific reason or it is just the whole "Freaks" angle of older Circus media, or something worse?

I don't mind because he and his team are great at making high quality stories I'm into. (Season 2 of HTP when?). Plus let's be honest, "normalizing" of 40k was a matter of time and waiting for someone to digest all the fluff into something easy and entertaining for others who just wanna know what's going on.

I never bothered to watch that one, though I've been liking Hunter: the Parenting.

Midnight Circus is actually one of my favorite WoD books. The freakshow must be what he's talking about, but I don't find it that insensitive. The entire book is one big Something Wicked This Way Comes homage. In said book, the entire freakshow isn't actual disabled people, but innocents changed into horrible distorted forms by the evil of the circus. So I don't think it's offensive to actual disabled people.

Midnight Circus is filled with all the 90s edge you'd expect compared to the novel it's clearly inspired by, but it's a fun little setpiece of a book. I've always wanted to use the Lunar Circus in a game but sadly it's very high power level and hard to work into a normal game.

Makes sense, but I can also see how someone MIGHT see that angle because, to be fair, it's inspired by real freaks. That said I agree, I like the Evil Circus concept for WOD. like the vid pointed out, it makes a great setpiece for Crossover shenanigans between different monsters.

That said, while I agree with your sentiment, I also can see how someone might be put off by the whole "THE FREAKSHOW" angle without knowing the context.

Joining pyramid is not something you can do in a single night. It takes days if not weeks to get in. You have to get tremere regent's permission and fit strict criterias, which are:
          >scholar type, those who were students of any kind (if the candidate is somebody who studied medicine, it's a bonus)
          >strong willed, bonus if aggressive
          >can keep head clear all the time
After you get in, you need to drink blood from council of 7 for blood bond for bonding and to prove loyalty, then do all kinds of crazy shit to practice. Rogue embraces like VtMB's protagonist get killed on sight by regent or regents lackeys due to lack of trust and because of exposure of tremere clan's secrets.
Very few actually get in because of strict criterias and because lots of candidates kill themselves eventually.

It's not that they all joined the Anarchs, it that they just pretty much any vamp not in the Camarilla is considered an anarch by default (if they're not Sabbat of course). It doesn't help that both the Sabbat and most Anarchs who do consider themselves Anarchs pretty much think the same way too. And in typical wod fashion, whether or not the titles of Independent and Anarch are interchangeable as fact or propaganda is left intentionally vague so players can decide for their own games.

It's still there in bits and pieces. There's the ghost alley, the ambiguous nature of Diavolo, everything involving the green baby/heaven, Jesus, and the rock people, as disappointingly shallow as they were in the end. Those cats from the recent chapter were pretty fucking weird.

Jojo still has lots of supernatural stuff, it's just hamon was killed off along with Dio and now it's all about stands, mainly because JoJo was made back in 80s and early 90s, and all action manga at that time had characters with weird ancient martial arts so stands were forced for JoJo manga to stand out in the crowd.

              Anonymous

Other way around. Hamon was the generic martial art. Araki wanted something different from the other shounen series, and came up with stands.

Would you say that the first Bloodlines was a "punk" game?

I mean the music kinda fit that aesthetic, most of the game is set in poorer, more run-down areas, people in positions of wealth or authority are generally portrayed as incompetent, uncaring, or evil and it ends with you committing violence against them, the Anarchs while antagonistic at first are mostly portrayed in a positive light, and the story is a "rags to riches" story where you start off as the scrappy underdog and gain power quickly

Because fuck the cammies in general and lacroix in particular because he's a massive shitpiece and would no doubt have every anarch lined up on that stage to get lopped by the sherrif if he could.
      >how is the taxi driver tied to all this?
It is implied in dialogue and several of the endings (and explicitly stated in the game files) that the taxi driver is caine himself both figuratively and literally driving the fledgling to his destiny. lacroix actions throughout the whole thing just go to show that he's unfit for leadership since he will make and break alliances and betray everyone and everything for the sake of THE CHANCE of increasing his own power. For the sake of ALL of the cainites in LA, he had to go.

Jack is an anarch, so jack's standpoint is "fuck the cammies."
Personally speaking I would yes be either an anarch or autarkis if the local anarchs are anything like rudi and his gay muslim antifa group therapy session but I see the understand the need for something like both the anarchs AND the camarilla, and would think that if it didnt already exist someone would probably invent something very much like it anyway. The system as it stands has done so for a very long fucking time, and it does so because it WORKS.

            Anonymous

I should have read what you were replying to realize you were talking about Jack. And basically ALL anarchs in v5 are Rudi-tier or slightly less so. All the cool anarchs are dead or using the new anarchs for what they want behind the scenes.
