steam won the online gaming marketplace fair and square, you make it sound like they bought up all the competition or kneecapped the rest so only they remained, that's not how it went

only big publishers can survive not being on steam

Why would I care about a store being a monopoly if it has favorable conditions for me?

Every monoploy has favorable conditions in the beginning, but at a later point conditions worsen because it's their way or the highway. A monopoly that treats its customers great forever is a unicorn.

GOG is dogshit. No steam workshop, no forums with an actual community to discuss games with, dogshit prices since their sales can't compete with steam, nogames since devs with drm protected games don't put games on their dogshit platform, no support since gog has no consumer base and sells peanuts which results in delayed patches and removed features like multiplayer.

If gog was any good, gog cultists would have a 280+ page discussion on how game devs treat them like second rate trash lol:

          https://www.gog.com/forum/general/games_that_treat_gog_customers_as_second_class_citizens_v2/page1

If you buy from gog, you're a moron paying for literal air, because you can just pirate and get the exactly same product experience. Only good thing gog has done is make piracy easier since you can just download the gog installer, kek.

            Anonymous

GOG is good solely for the fact that they let you download offline installers. That alone sets them up against Valve. The only bad thing about it is that it probably isn't sustainable because big AAA publishers won't use them because of it.

              Anonymous

Steam also lets publishers use fully offline, DRM free installation. It's just that most don't since steamworks is free.

As a first worlder gigachad with an uberbox, I understand the appeal of a lack of DRM, especially when it's tied to what may not be around for long. If Denuvo just up and collapses, it's up to developers to remove it from their games, and I've seen plenty of developers look at older titles and go "frick you, we made our money and we're not fixing a core scheduling issue that's simple" (Rebellion did that with Rogue Trooper Redux), so DRM-locked games with the developer discarding them are a real possibility. Steamworks is easy to circumvent and Valve has proven they're committed to maintaining the platform, 21 years later, so it's not a big deal.

It's not a matter of affording. It's a matter of practically. Discs are worthless because nobody uses them, and they're slow as shit.

                >Discs are dead. Deal with it. Consoles aren't even going to be using them for much longer.
then go with the usb part

what shitty excuse you going to use now?

256gb USB sticks for games add too much to production costs. Then you have to add in the costs of loading each one, shipping each one, and distribution. It's not worth it for the few people that want it. It's not worth it from a publishing standpoint, and most people wouldn't find it worth it from a purchasing standpoint. I can have a game downloaded before it releases, and be playing it as soon as it does. Or, I could wait for physical media to be shipped after release, or buy it at a store and have to go pick it up, then install after.

Physical sales are dead forever, because you have to concern yourself with distribution logistics. Online sales entirely skip this part and alleviate a lot of headache and extra costs.

Little indies like itch have an excuse, nsfw like dlsite has an excuse, gog being drm free and salvaging games has an excuse, major publishers and corporations who want to shove their own launchers down your throat do not. Don't care. Rockstar's last good game was Bully, their last good western was Red Dead Revolver, and their last good GTA was Vice City.

My point is that RDR2 was a wildly popular game and I was interested in playing it to the point I won't even pirate it. Too bad people are willing to put up with these practices on PC. I would try out AC: Unity too even though it's a ubishit game but again, it's locked behind their garbage launcher. Mirror's Edge 2, I could go on about games I haven't played because of this.

The secret tech in capitalism used to be that people had a moral compass and company knowledge. If a company was actively fricking over society then people would shun that business and look down on people for doing business with them. People used to gladly pay more if the employees were treated well, or if the money stayed in their local area. People shit on boomers but they did one thing right. It's kind of coming back with neo-hippie types buying local but I doubt they understand the economic reasons why that's good. Most people nowadays are scumbags that think pic related is perfect if it means their sugar water shipment costs .50c less.

If you decide to put it somewhere else you should keep in mind that you're selling your game without a ton of conveniences, if you sell the game with these figured out, making them non-issues, then you get a sale. Cloud saves, easy multiplayer connecting with friends, controller input binding, forum, remote play together, etc.

google just had a really good reputation back in the mid to late 00s when they were expanding and they had their original founders. they were quickly gaining a monopoly on email services and were expanding to have things like their cloud apps, and people who were in my college tech school used to joke about how they were going to take over the world but it would be a good thing. Glenn Beck did a big interview with them where he said the founders were genuinely great people but that the level of power they had made him nervous if it fell into the wrong hands. just like 5 years later and poof, they sell the company and google starts having fiascos, proving everyone who said they were going to become something bad right.

    There's the epic store
    Blizzard's launcher thing
    U play
    Microsoft's store
    GoG
The fact that steam is the biggest and most popular does not make it a monopoly. It is not the only option and does not try to be the only option. Steam does not pay for exclusivity, nor demand it it as part of any kind of deal they offer. Steam does not compel a company to promise to release more games on their platform to continue supporting existing titles. Steam does not give special treatment to games that aren't available on competing platforms. Steam does not even interfere with the incorperation of third party launchers, DRM, or account systems, EVEN THOUGH IT FRICKING SHOULD.

      Anonymous

The irony is outside of GoG, they're all launcher slop garbage. At least Valve's works on Linux ootb and Proton is actually a first class concern for them. I legitimately can't understand why anyone would use anything else if it's not DRM free on GoG.

The thing about steam is that you technically don't need to launch it unless the game comes with DRM. But, valve offers steamworks for free, and most devs say "frick it, why not?", which is a bit annoying.

    >central element of a monopoly isn't just market share, but that it has a disproportionate market share that is obtained through means other than providing a superior product or service.
    >they often control the entire supply chain, from manufacture to distribution of the good or service
Steam is the most successful because they provide the best service, hence not a monopoly. Ironically EGS is closer to a monopoly because they use their massive resources to buy themselves a disproportionate share of the market despite having a woefully inferior product, and then use that product to attempt to lock out other stores in the market with forced exclusivity bribes. They also own the engine that half of modern games, particularly smaller ones are built on.

Especially when it's like Epic and is actively doing things that if Steam did they'd be considered a monopoly, but it's ok because Epic isn't as big.

What’s wrong with monopolies? Data shows that people don’t want a million different platforms, they want centralisation into a single one. The same way it was better when everything was on Netflix before everyone and their dog had a streaming service. People don’t want to have their game libraries fragmented out amongst different clients.

No one cared about digital sales. Steam simply grew so big because there was empty space to grow in to. A monopoly is something that you activeley keep. It's still incredibly funny that despite every other huge corpo in this industry taking shots at them, Valve chooses to do literally nothing and still wins, up to and including maintaining higher cuts for selling on their platform than their competitors.

While I don't doubt that's true, it looks like something anyone could make in MS Publisher.

  113. 6 days ago
    Anonymous

I get it but it's really as simple as this
    Valve got there first
Nobody else bothered to get there and do it as well as they did
Now I have almost all my shit there and I don't want to manage 3 or 4 different launchers because I remember what happened with streaming services over the 2010s
I went from being a pirate in my youth, to being a good goy consumer because everything because nice and convenient, back to being a pirate because I'm not fricking getting 10 different $20/month subscriptions to watch everything I'm interested in.

      Anonymous

All the shit with streaming services taught me was things tend to go to shit when every company thinks you should hook into their service even if it's horribly limited and things are better when it's a small number of third party services who have to actually offer something other then exclusive content.

Steam isn't perfect, but unless you're a homosexual running an ancient copy of Windows, odds are your experience is positive. Most of us on Ganker use it because it works and doesn't frick us over regularly. It has the games and is comfy to use. The fat fricks who run linux especially like it because Valve makes stuff actually run on their trash OS. You don't have to shill for Steam. It's like shilling for Coke on Ganker or shilling for DBZ on Ganker.

There is a reason why even though steam can suck.
    >Bethesda launcher: Stopped support, killed licenses for any games bought on there
    >Origin: EA killed support, stole your game licenses unless you moved to the EA app then still refused to restore your library
    >Epic: It's alright but still new and they have too much CCP funding that concerns me.
    >Direct2Drive: Died and sucked and nuked your library in its death
    >GOG: Would be perfect except it's mostly old games
    >Amazon: Shittier DRM than Steam and only relavent because of prime.
    >Ubisoft: We'll take away your license and kill the activation server to your game whenever we feel like it. LOL
    >Xbox store: overpriced dog shit NOW WITH DEI! HEY WANNA PAY FOR A MONTHLY SUBSCRIPTION TO NOT OWN YOUR GAMES?!
    >PSN: All the fun of not owning your games, with cyber security that is hacked every 2 years, and it isn't available in half the countries in the world and get cross banned if we feel like banning you
They are a monopoly because every other Digital Game Storefront is a greedy shitty barely functional shithole where you can lose your games and library at the drop of a hat and the change of a EULA.

Epic is their only competition ATM and when you consider the success of fortnight its not as far behind as one may think.
Tell digital stores to stop being morons and maybe steam won't be a monopoly.
