Aftermarket screens are completely fine, that image claiming otherwise is the only proof anyone present anyways. There’s no back up to the claim, no one who has one claimed to notice any additional input lag before hand.
Even if it were true, it needed ‘professional’ equipment for an actual difference to be observed. Lastly there’s no proof that it was an authentic FunnyPlaying screen anyways.
I have two GBAs one with an original screen and one with an IPS, I cannot tell the difference at all, just that one is visible without needing to sit by a lamp or window.

I have every type of GBA screen (or at least one of each) and I don't know how you can't see the difference between a funny playing IPS and a 101. The funnyplaying has no discernable pixels anywhere on it. Sure, that's because it's technically superior, but it also means every game looks like it's played with emulator filters. Maybe if you didn't play a ton of GBA when it was new you don't notice as much, but for me it's very obvious and looks bad.

If you're purely discussing non backlit, well I guess it doesn't matter much if your insistence is on a backlit screen. For me however, the purpose of a non-backlit system is playing by the light of day. It's not made for vampires and cave dwellers anon. In particular, the DMG screen looks quite pleasant on a bright sunny day. Now if only you could safely take a GB to the beach without getting sand all over it...

I got one at launch, I just don’t care about seeing individual pixels. If it bothers you that’s fine, but I’m just interested in playing the game.

I played my gf's sp for a few days in agony with the shitty front light. Bought a new battery for it because I thought it was kill. Apparently the battery was fine and the light just sucks the battery dry fucking immediately. I know there's the rare backlit one too, but who the fuck is selling that? Grabbing an og gba and putting the ips display in was an absolute game changer

Brand new aftermarket sp batteries are consistently worse than old used-and-abused official Nintendo ones. If you need a good battery you have to do a lot of research.

Ah well fuck. By the time I realized the light was drawing the majority of the power of the entire device, the original battery had been taken out with the trash, RIP.

I find that hard to believe. Unless the original batteries have been well maintained (almost impossible given the behavior of the average user), the material inside will have degraded from having sat uncharged for a long time. My evidence is that I have several originsl SP batteries and a number of them barely power on a system for more than 2 hours. I don't understand this notion anyway, it's not as if Nintendo had some magic recipe for lithium ion batteries. A more reasonable explanation is the batteries that get made today are chinkshit for a niche market that lacks any knowledge or quality standards. Even so, I'd be surprised if new batteries performed that much more poorly than 20 year old ones.

It's not so much that aftermarket screen have input lag, more that their colours aren't accurate compared to official screens (though there IS disparity between official screen models).
Lucky for me I bought a premodded GBA with the AGS-101 screen, so I personally didn't sacrifice a SP for it - the original modders did. I've since replaced the shell, screen lens and buttons, however (pic related).

To add to this - At this point, your better off with one of the higher end IPS panels, some even have the option to toggle the pixel array to appear more like official screens.

Where did you buy this? I've wanted a original gba with an ags 101 for the longest time. People with ips screens seriously cope so much about the input lag but I'm not dealing with that shit

Bought it a while back at a retro vidya market thing. I lucked out as this was just as IPS mods were starting to take off, so sellers were ofloading their old AGS-101 modded GBAs quick to make room for the "new hotness".

If any of the unprovable or nitpicky shit people mention in this thread will keep you up at night, don’t mod your GBA. If you don’t give a shit and just want to play you games with a screen you can actually see, just mod it. It’s way better and most of these morons just hate when people actually have fun playing video games instead of masturbating to nostalgia

I kinda hate the way the SP feels in my hands too.
If you have qualms about modifying a GBA that’s in otherwise great shape then you should just hunt down one that’s busted up. I didn’t want to disfigure a console’s shell either so that’s what I did. You could also just find the motherboard and whatever other parts you might need and just use a third party shell, some of which I’m sure are even designed to be used with backlit screens.

I dunno how I've managed to avoid buying any dead bugs with any of my old consoles so far, but I have. My Pocket has a sun-damaged screen that I'd like to replace at some point, but I don't really know what I should replace it with just yet.

One simply has to perform a quick occult ritual or two and replace the mundane, physical spiders with incorporeal servitors of the modder's own creation. Soul spiders.

There’s literally no proof of increased input lag on those IPS screens other than some random 13 year on YouTube that didn’t provide his testing method, or any actual proof of his findings.
