Dragon's Dogma 2 only has one save file slot, and it gets overwritten by autosaves

Someone please tell me why this isn't utterly disastrous programming. This is such a massive red flag.

From lets you have multiple saves for different characters but it uses one slot for a character so that you can't just save scum every time you lose your souls. I don't see a justification in DD so I assume there isn't one for DD2

Being able to save would ruin From games for me. That wall is what makes it fun. I quit Baldurs after 100 hours because I started saving and re-rolling every time. And so quit Starfield too after a few console commands. I’m currently not digging the Control checkpoints though. You always go back to the last checkpoint when you quit.

From doesn't do this though. From gives you as many save slots as you want, but only one per character. DD gives you only one slot and only one character, so you can't experiment with different builds or do anything fun you normally do in RPGs.

Changing class at endgame of an rpg is not at all the same as doing a fresh playthrough as a different build.

Especially so in dragons dogma where depending on which vocation you were, and changed to, you might have utterly garbage stats that mean you are woefully underpowered compared to someone who actually played that vocation the whole time.

            Anonymous

This is false, you won't be weak due to stat growth, just getting a good weapon is all that it takes to be powerful with any vocation, and augments help too, specially in the end game.
You've never played this game and it shows.

Not that anon, but we'll have to see how big DD2 is in scope because the biggest detterent for me switching gears mid playthrough is that I'd have to like, grind monsters or board quests to level up vocations for the new augments I'd want for it, and that's just not very fun or compelling. Whereas progressing with the game means you have bespoke content to do with that vocation.

I don't give a frick about changing class you dumb shit: I want to HAVE MULTIPLE SEPARATE CHARACTERS like every other motherfricking game on Earth lets me have. This was the number one complaint with the first game and it's absurd that they still haven't fixed that moronic design error in the second.

Dragons Dogma doesn’t prevent save scumming.

It’s actually incredibly easy to do.

The bad part about this is only allowed one character. Which sucks in a game that you might want to replay as a different vocation, but probably don’t want to delete your high level, ng+ save.

It’s effortless to save scum to abuse random drops, or give yourself unlimited attenpts at one-time things.

What stops you from changing your vocation on your current character? What stops you from experimenting?

It's not the same fricking thing you moron. Just like Dark Souls. Just like Skyrim. Just like every other motherfricking game. That is normal. that is expected. There is no excuse to not enable this. Capcom doesn't know how to design shit.

          >So? The stats that matter come from gear.
I know and that has literally 0 bearing on the argument for multiple saves. I don't want to just change classes at the end of my file, I want to be able to roll a new character with a new playstyle from the start so I can experience the early/midgame as that vocation without having to use 3rd party software to backup my original save.

I see, personally, I've played DDDA from scratch about 6 times, I never thought to back up my saves, nor did I feel like I wanted to go back and play a previous character, and I don't think this is something a lot of people care about, unfortunate for you, I guess, but there are workarounds at least.

Your stats are permanently changed from the classes you leveled up as.

And before you act like your stats are nothing important, even the difference between going Strider (the balanced class) for 60 levels vs Mage/Sorceror for 60 levels while using the grigori weapons is like 10 to 15% difference of total attack.

And since damage is just straight up attack minus enemy defense, if you're like 1200 attack instead of 1100 attack, and hitting an enemy with 800 defense, your base attack's 400 damage vs 300 damage. And that's before it starts getting multiplied by augments and moves.

God forbid you went warrior to sorceror and now you're doing less than half the damage a sorceror would've been doing with the exact same spells.

I wish that were the case, but no, the problem is mainly in hard mode or Bitterblack Isle if you aren't on NG+ or aren't grinding, where it's not that you're doing 66% less damage, it's that you come across enemies or bosses where you can end up doing 1 damage per hit when someone else would be doing 150 per hit and the only difference was what class that person was in leveling up.

It's an awful system. It's why almost no one uses flat defense values, if you want enemies to take more hits you give more HP or you do percent-based reductions based on where you hit, like Monster Hunter. No idea why they didn't figure this out when they're also Capcom and reuse some MH animations.

yeah the damage argument is dumb, the only thing that feels really tangible is stamina I find. Playing a vocation with bad stamina growths feels worse than something with decent growths. cuts down on needing to stop time to shove nuts in my face over and over

                Anonymous

That I can see. I leveled all the vocations willy-nilly so my stats are fricked, and it kinda showed when I had to go Ranger to beat Daimon v2 and I'd empty my stamina after a handful of tenfold arrows. But even then, a couple bottles of vim helps overcome that.

It's way bigger than 10% because of defense, that's what the entire rest of the post is about.

              110 is 110% of 100, but if you're subtracting 90 from both you have 20 and 10. 20 is 200% of 10.

Very simple. When everyone has a single save slot and hires pawns X times per playthrough on average, then your pawn will be hired 2X times per playthrough on average, which is nice. Now imagine you can have multiple saves, e.g. a maximum of 5.
If pawns from all saves are equally eligible to be selected, then you'll have minmaxing buttholes running maximum number of saves and cutting the number of times your pawn gets hired fivefold. If you make the chance of getting a pawn scale down per number of saves, then having more than one save will penalize you by splitting your hires between your active save and saves you're not playing, which is also shit.
The only solution is to have only the pawn from your active save be eligible for hiring. Which in turn is basically exactly the same as juggling saves in DD1, which I imagine you can also do in DD2 unless you're a console pleb.

With rift crystals, which will most likely be more heavily monetized in 2024 than they were in 2012. Enjoy spending 20 bucks to make a "new character" in your singleplayer game, lest you delete your save or go through the autism of constantly backing up save files and swapping them around (which will probably trigger denuvo to have a melty). All because the developers can't code for shit to make the pawn system non-abusable with multiple saves.

How dare you want to have an NG+ character and an NG character with a different appearance at the same time! What are you a nazi!?!

this never happens, the only time I imagine getting into a fight you can't back out of is the Dragon, Seneschal and the scripted (meant to be beaten) Griffin fight.

other than that you can just walk away, you can teleport away if you have a ferry stone, find a rift stone and hire a healer mage, etc. not to mention that every area gives you plenty of healing items.

Hell, you can even load back at your last checkpoint, which means the last time you slept at an inn or rest area, the first game gives you every opportunity to back out of combat and come back when you're better prepared or stronger, the second game will most likely just have the same elements.

You can change you and your pawn's vocation whenever you want, you can change you and your pawn's appearance with an item you buy with Rift crystals, and you can do infinite NGs with all your levels/items saved over to do-over any quests you missed or fricked up last run.

        Yes.
In real life when you talk to someone do you know what they are going to say and can you undo talking to them? No.
If you are making a decision where you already know the outcome and can redo the decision any time you want anyway then it's not really a decision at all.
In order for there to be decisions there must be consequences and for there to be consequences there must be unknowns and things you can't take back just like in real life.
Developers are afraid to put real consequences in their games but it will make games more fun for high IQ individuals like myself who don't play games just as an escapist fantasy where everything always goes my way. If you can't handle this go play some game like that.

I'm confused. Does this mean you can't have multiple characters with their own save files like Souls games? Like do you literally only ever have one save file, and the only way to start a new game is to delete the one file you're allowed? If so, they can go frick themselves. The real reason for that would be preventing multiple people from playing a single game, ie buy you're own console/game if you wanna play it. Frick you.

If you believe that, then it's not far off to say that DD1 sales are close to 5 million, as well.

It's only even at that point because of steam sales putting it as Capcom's cheapest game + switch port. Dark Souls on the other hand has never been on sale for less than 15 dollars and had 10 million sales 5 years ago.

I just hope stats actually matter in DD2 since it seems like you get magick stats even from physical vocations and vice versa.

I fricking hate that in DDDA there is no armor customization or depth. 0 nuance, just go slap on the best possible thing you can find because it is better than every other piece that came before it. There is no unique skills or enchantments or anything to make armor worth caring about other than raw stats with no downsides. You just go from rags to slightly better rags to leather to chainmail, etc. It's so boring. I want to have set pieces with special effects that you can mix and match to fit your vocation or your playstyle. Just rebuying gear every few levels from the town SUCKS.

Is this actually confirmed or is this just some journalist looking at the save menu in the demo? Having one slot per character is fine, the question is more about if you can make more files for other characters. In other words, if you go to hit the "new game" button instead of "continue", does it overwrite your existing save or does it make a new file for that character? If they made it like how it was in DD1 again then I'm assuming this is meant to prevent you from making other characters and hiring your own pawns. That's kind of niche though and I doubt that many people would do that. I would prefer multiple character slots but it's not the end of the world if you can only have one again.

I don't think any demo players got to see a proper title screen with options like "continue" and "new game". They all play an exhibition version that has you select a pre-configured vocation at the start. I think this Japanese IGN guy is just saying that there's one slot for the character and that the autosave slot isn't separate from the manual save. We don't know if multiple character files are confirmed or de-confirmed as far as I'm aware.

I believe in Itsuno. The first DD was good despite being woefully unfinished because its fine tuning made it more than the sum of its parts. The DD2 developers seem really intent on avoiding the mistakes of a lot of RPGs and open world games that make them unfun, plus they're clearly playing their cards close to their chest by not showing more than one vertical-slice demo.

you'd either make a time limit for deleting inactive pawns (which people would still cry about) or you'd end up with millions of pawns per region that would steadily build overtime and you'd have to keep expanding space and making a more robust indexing sequence, which will never happen. the MMO was able to do it because the MMO is a live-service model restricted to a single region that is getting a steady stream of money from Capcom to maintain servers regardless.
the only viable option you gave was "account wide", but then you'd still have to reset pawn gear and knowledge on NG as to not break the balance. which at that point, why not just delete the pawn anyway?

Make a time limit that just deactivates the pawns until the person logs in again, not delete them. No one would complain, since they wouldn't be playing the game anyways and can always come back to it.

Not only that, but why are you pretending like Capcom is some indie studio that can't afford to spend a few hundred dollars on server upkeep every month? MMOs can have millions of inactive players and be fine.

still doesn't account for the storage issue.
                >few hundred dollars
naive view of server maintenance, but the reality is that eventually the game won't make them enough money they are offsetting the maintenance costs. whether it is 5 years or 10, or maybe even 2, it is much better to put what is functionally a hard limit on what money you'd need to maintain the game than to hand the suits some nebulous "maybe sometime at some point" because all that does is guarantee you are first on the chopping block.
the MMO model is primarily upkept by whales and inactive players aren't really a measure of revenue. that and, they are already granted the server architecture and storage needed for millions of players by nature of their existence. DD2 is a singleplayer game, and the majority of the development time (and money) can't be sacrificed on servers and whatnot that might not ever be used when there's a better, cheaper, and more effective method that they've already used before.

DDO is made by Capcom Online Games that regularly ignored the development systems of the games they made online versions of. Not only that but they actively hated mainline games. They were so fricked up that it took them literally being shut down by Ryozo to get a single Frontier monster in regular Monster Hunter after 11 years of COG blocking all monsters from appearing in mainline titles after throwing a shit fit about Lavasioth and Hypnocatrice.
DDO hated the lore of DD1 and outright ignored it all together when making their world and game systems by making a special white dragon that could make everyone into Arisen.

Just like how in WoW, even if you create your character right now, you are the champion of azeroth who has slain Ragnaros, Illidan, Arthas, Deathwing, saved the Pandas, stopped Draenor invasion #2, killed Gul'daniel, imprisoned Sargeras, etc. It's just the nature of MMOs that have a story where someone is a "hero." I don't want to just change classes at the end of my file, I want to be able to roll a new character with a new playstyle from the start so I can experience the early/midgame as that vocation without having to use 3rd party software to backup my original save.

Man, you guys are really digging deep for bullshit today. You could just do NG+ if you want to play through the game again, but you won't because your entire argument consists of picking hairs in bad faith. Literally NO ONE wants to sit there and do the same boss fight over as different vocations unless they're save-scumming for dragonforged gear. It's pointless anyways, as every monster could be found again in the first game so there's no reason whatsoever to sit there reloading saves like an autistic moron

That doesn't mean the game is running at 60fps, just that the footage is, the video itself was encoded to 60FPS.

All footage so far has been on PS5, so at least PS5 and series x will be 60fps. There's no reason for PC not to exceed that. The only platform that MIGHT be locked at 30 is series s, but there's nothing to even suggest that at this point.

This is some serious level of cope. You can just go find a real 60 fps game to test it yourself. For example this spider-man 2 video. No matter where you click in this 15 hour video, that probably took youtube 8 days to encode, you can see each and every single frame advance with 1 press of the period key.

Yeah, I agree, YouTube compression doesn't mess with that, the game simply isn't running at 60 FPS, there's a few moments where it goes above 30 though, so this whole 30 FPS lock rumor is simply bullshit however I think they could end up locking the FPS to 30 if they can't optimize the game well enough in time.

That's not how the pawn system functions and you'd know that if you bothered to play the first one. Once a pawn is borrowed, the Arisen who borrowed it keeps said pawn until it is dismissed or dies, at which point they can bring it back again at any time. This also affects the pawns ranking within the pawn system.

                >That's not how the pawn system functions and you'd know that if you bothered to play the first one. Once a pawn is borrowed, the Arisen who borrowed it keeps said pawn until it is dismissed or dies, at which point they can bring it back again at any time. This also affects the pawns ranking within the pawn system.
what a stupid argument. you do know this is a sequel and they can change how things work to accommodate other changes, right? I don't see how me presenting this as a workaround for multiple saves somehow means I don't understand how the pawn system from 1 works, you're just flinging shit with no basis.

WATCH OUT GUYS! troony MELTDOWN INCOMING!

Kicking pawns out of other Arisens parties because (you) want to do some autistic moron shit is asinine. Please take your meds and dilate

I'm slightly concerned over the 30fps cap rumors, mainly because I see the Steam recommended specs only list 30fps and makes no mention of 60
Still likely to get the game day 1.

You think it could be locked to 30FPS on PC? That's silly, every single RE Engine game had FPS targets on their specs, doesn't mean they were lock to said FPS targets, in fact, every single RE Engine game has unlimited FPS, as fast as your PC will allow.
However, DD2 looks to be very demanding, it might need quite a fast CPU to let you run the game at 60 fps or more.

I finished this game a few weeks ago after all the shilling here and other than the combat that's ok, it's pretty much a FFXV without the car.

I think part of the reason DD2 is a bit hyped here is because the first game is a very flawed one with the potential to be purely great.
The combat is a good foundation, now they just need to not frick up the rest like they did last time

Too many fools ITT defending this. One of my gripes about DD1 was the game not allowing me to start fresh on separate file just so I could find different ways to frick around in BBI with a low level character.
I understand the devs probably do this to limit one pawn per account. But people should still have the freedom to create as many pawns as they want, with the rule that they can upload only one (we could even select one of several created pawns) to the game's servers.

yeah then you host pawn data locally and people frick with it and shit up your servers with hacked/modded pawn data with a ton of sec risk

Y'all dumbasses acting like actions have consequences don't get the point. There aren't any actions that really matter in DDDA. The issue is that continuing the main plot often causes you to fail quests that you didn't know we're available. There are several quests you can miss just by not going back to Cassardis or even exploring near the quarry. It's fine and not a big deal, but it sucks having to do a whole new playthrough just because you decided to explore and accidentally locked yourself out of a quest you didn't know existed. It's absolute cope to pretend this is what made DD a good game. It was simply an oversight due to the game's lack of polish.

If it were an oversight they wouldn't have carried it over to the sequel. It's a design choice. It's also largely irrelevant since you can backup saves on Steam, or just make an extra profile on console.

That's a good thing though, having many characters for one player would absolutely dilute the pawn pool, reducing the chance that the pawn of an active character would be picked.

So if i want two characters on PC, i have to buy two copies on two different Steam account?

I think you would actually need to do more than that, you may need a different windows profile altogether, if it's stored in appdata. Unless the save is strictly though cloud or something.

I'm concerned that this game only runs at 30 fps on console.

I get the feeling the RE engine was only designed for rooms and fields and not open traversal games.

Remember the PS5 and series x are stronger than your average gaming pc.

This means you will probably need a 12gb graphics card and a 8 core CPU to lock 60 fps at 1080p and up.
