Isn't the downside to e-ink is that they are much slower than regular screens?
That would be pretty bad for gaming.

They also don't rape your eyes as much as regular LCD screens and generally consume less power. I can see them excel at visual novels.

i still prefer actual paper a lot, given that ebooks are just as expensive as physical media ill always stick to paper given the choice

how are you not downloading ebooks from anna's archive or anywhere else? that's the whole benefit of getting an ebook, specificially a Kobo that you can just drag and drop the file.

Is Kobo the one you can actually write and draw on? I was considering a eink reader that does that.

yeah there's a few of them apparently, i bought my Kobo Clara HD years ago and have never upgraded since. seriously the best ereader, at least it was. looks like the 2E replaced it. you'd have to look up reviews though for tablets with pen, no idea how they perform.

i actually buy books i want to read

how the frick is that tangibly related to what i said, just pirate the books you were going to buy with money. are you 12? how is that a genuine post

Not everyone likes paying money to buy hardware to stop paying money that supports the actual authors.

I got my Clara HD for like 60€ and I'm very happy with it. No way I'm paying 450€ for the E2, though, even though I'd love to have a device I could write on. That's just too much.

My Kobo wouldn't be able to manage much more than 5-10 FPS, judging by how fast page turning is. And that's with the possibility of smearing, which is why most e-ink screens tend to wipe themselves every so often before loading new content. I've never seen an e-ink screen capable of gaming. Great for books, though.

My only issue with my kobo e-reader is that I read LNs a lot and they usually feature a few colored pages which I miss out on with my e-reader. There's probably some more expensive models that has color added to it but they tend to be too pricey for my taste.

Clara HD got a Color successor called Clara Color. It's actually not that much more expensive that the original's MSRP, though you can often get the original for way less today if you can still find it in a store.

They go for around 15fps now.

This video a few years ago had 44 fps at 1080.

They later overclock it to 60, and then 73 without ghosting. I've seen 60hz advertised more recently.

You can probably game at 60fps on eink if you wanted. But it would be better served as a second monitor for mostly text browsing. Chans, reddits, social media, chats, anything without video.

Those are effectively turn-based games. They can wait on however long the screen needs to refresh after a move has been made.

why would you need high refresh rates on something that's made for reading black and white? genuinely curious
wouldn't the requirements for high framerates introduce lower battery life and more weight to the device too?

Why the frick do people keep trying to force e-ink into use cases that it's terrible for? It's great for reading or screens that don't update often, just leave it at that.

They're going to find a way to make these in color because of this experimenting and then you'll be thoroughly btfo.
