    >capcom said it couldn't be done due to the hit effects having japanese characters
why did that matter the game was already anime

Sony had a staunch "no Japanese voices/kanji/hira/kata without at least an English/Roman letter replacement option" rule for about a decade that only big projects got around. I think Koei was the first company to get them to frick off on that with smaller scale licensed games.

Capcom was also full of shit, though. Their PR guys lied constantly back then.

      Anonymous

Is this actually a reason they gave? Total bullshit, they just didn't want to translate it and gave the easiest excuse they could think of. They could have just replaced the sound effects with "whams!" or "pows!" and any other equivalent.

        Anonymous

Given the fan translation doesn't, they probably couldn't without spending more time/money than the game was worth.

EX Troopers is sick, but it was made on the cheap with a ton of recycled assets. Some of the stuff from Legends 3 even ended up in there.

Frick this game! Mega Man Legends 3 died for this shitty Lost Planet spinoff.

A lot of people back in the day assumed Legends 3 got greenlit and then cancelled, in which case it would have absolutely been shelved for Gaist Crusher and EX Troopers (the two Capcom published 3DS games that reused its assets). It took a while for it to come out that Legends 3 was never given the okay at all and some people never got the memo.

EXT reusing Legends assets is made up bullshit. Game was in production way before L3 was announced and the supposed screen showing whatever they shared was fake.

            Anonymous

MML3 never got greenlit, that's why it got cancelled to begin with.

Inafune was the sole reason that and other projects existed, and him leaving (or maybe getting pushed out due to multiple frick ups?) was a way for him to generate interest for his own projects.

            >megatards seriously believe they axed a dying sequel for a low budget game for a dying series
            >Both dying no thanks to Inahomosexual's attempt to push for the west
ExTroopers was the life support attempt to keep it going via japs and capcom weebs but nu-Capcom was stil just as moronic as Inafune prior, especially that wine drinking jap.

It was specifically because a lot of the text is hardcoded, more or less, so that's part of it but not all of it.
        >overcoming multiple technical limitations of the game's engine, [...] replacing hundreds of speech bubbles in pre-rendered videos,
The pre-rendered videos in particular would be a massive amount of work that likely exceeds the budget they would get for a niche localization.

Is what's the difference between the difference between the PS3 and 3DS versions? Is one better than the other?

It's a 3DS game first, so it's just a platform preference. If you're playing on hardware, PS3 obviously has better resolution and better online, but 3DS still looks and runs great. Dunno if Citra and RPCS3 could play it online, but the coop is nice for grinding and the PvP is goofy fun.

          Anonymous

It isn't massive, but the PS3 version does just inherently run and look better regardless of emulation and upscaling.

          Anonymous

The text was never hardcoded, it was just the manga video files that it would have been a problem for.
That shit about it being hard-coded was a fricking lie by someone in their PR, anyone who even looked at the game for a few minutes could have told you it was just a regular ass text parser for the majority of the dialogue in the game.

        Anonymous

The fantranslators actually explain what they did and I'm pretty sure it's the reason Capcom didn't want to do it: replace all speech bubbles on all movie files frame by frame

Both are 30fps. If you have a PS3, there's no reason to try the 3DS version, unless you really want to see manga cutscenes in 3D or AR shit

It definitely salvaged assets from mml3, but I don't think it was truly out of any sort of malice/laziness, it felt more like the devs working with what they had after a large head (con-man) of the company dropped out.
but make no mistake- this was definitely a project made with passion looking at the art and effort put into it. It was always a shame it was so swept under the rug.
