If you throw a break move or a topple move when the time's not right, the enemies will dodge and counterattack. If you attack enough when the enemy is guarding, you'll get punished. And even when the best strategy is to go for the counterhit, you still need to doge and get the timing right.
Stand still or play like a retard and the game will punish you, specially on Die.

You can't "spam UT" in NG1, its not like in NG2 where its utterly braindead spam to cheese the game. There is nothing wrong with using UTs in NG1.

Sigma is harder than Black because the first chapter you don't get Lunar, making the hardest chapter in the game even more difficult. You could argue other chapters are harder, but IMO your first MN run chapter 1 will rape you again and again.

Its super fun man, I'm not a huge fan of rougelites because when you get stuck on a hard section you have to replay the entire thing to get back to that spot, but the balance in this one is great, from the start of the run to the end its a great challenge that tests you at all times. Plays a lot like Eternal in some ways, but also its only style, the enemies are crushing on the final difficulty and the builds you can make are a lot of fun to test out.

Mostly I'm waiting for Ultrakill to finally add a real hard mode and the next id software game. I'll be playing a bunch of mediocre garbo for now, such as Prodeus, which I have poor expectations for.

Changing Prime and Echoes' controls to something more common only makes them less unique, removing their learning curve and making them yet another game that plays the same in an already-oversaturated genre. You can't separate the game from the way it's meant to be interacted with by the player. I'd rather play Onimusha with tank controls, because that's the way it was originally designed. I'd rather get filtered by System Shock 1's old ass controls than play the game just like I would play anything else. I'd rather have Dante with style switching even when it's arguably a pointless mechanic.
A good game builds with its limitations rather than against them. Different controls allow different games to focus on different things. We should do away with the illusion that one given control scheme is "the" control scheme, because the point of videogames isn't to be a 1-to-1 reproduction of how humans work. Instead of pestering that guy because one first person game dared to have lock-on unlike the seas of those that don't, think about all the things that you could with it that those games can't.

I literally wouldn't play Metroid Prime if I couldn't use M+K, its a mechanic thing I use to play FPS games.
Even Metroid Prime doesn't resort to shitscan, and enemies can be fun to fight even if the difficulty isn't very high. Games like Quake and Quake 2 are also babby mode games, but I enjoyed them too. Whats crazy about Desync is that it came out BEFORE Eternal or Ultrakill, keep that in mind when you play it and your mind will be blown. REgardless of that, its great fucking game. The only worthwhile aspects about Bulletstorm such as environmental kills and combo scoring are put into it, creating a really fun game that is also a pretty brutal challenge. Probably like base campaign Eternal on Nightmare difficulty~. Also protip you would probably find out yourself, but your dash has iframes btw.

Nah I P ranked all of the second act, but at the time p-2 wasn't released. Its a sin to say, but I wasn't a huge fan of Minos P (liked Flesh Prison a lot though), and I watched a bit of footage of p-2 yesterday and it looks similar, although the arena fights look sick. I was kinda planning on waiting for act 3 (which HOPEFULLY comes with the final diffculty modes) before I went for it since I would need to relearn all my muscle memory.
Interesting that you didn't like the boss, you not a fan of Minos either I take it? I didn't like the fact he just teleports on you and forces you to press dodge, it felt like Souls rolling or Sekiro l1, really boring to me.

Yeah I am not that impressed by Minos and the P2 boss is pretty much just the same thing but harder. In a way he is even more of a Sekiro boss since you can parry his most dangerous attacks and parry had received a buff in the same update and now it also restores your stamina.
Flesh prison this time around was barely a fight since it dies on its own after a while. Very underwhelming.
I think V2 has a potential to be a really great boss if they put effort into higher difficulty modes and make him an actual mirror fight similar to NG doppelgangers.

Oh yeah hes a ton of fun to fight, the whole shooting his coins and him shooting your coins had me in admiration for the dev. Moments like that give me huge hopes for the final difficulty, but also the direction of Minos and the hype he got makes me wonder if it will poison the rest of the game. Probably not, but also the things that would make a final difficulty truly great are things Indie devs struggle with, like giving V2 quake bot tier AI would be the best way to change him, but indie devs and AI are usually oil and water due to how complex AI must be to program.
Stuff like Leviathan in Ultrakill had me worried for the future of the game, maybe its just a one time mistake, but what a disappointment, and v2's second fight was great, but a retreat and he killed him off. Maybe he makes a secret zombie v2 fight in act 3, I kinda hope so myself since the other boss aren't nearly as good.

Doppleganger fights are fun, but kinda show off the unbalanced aspect of NG in regards to blocking, especially since the cpu has like frame 1 blocking after an attack input. I mentioned it in the previous post, it fully restores stamina now which imo is huge and turns the boss into a joke since he in particular is very easy to parry, and his other attacks can be dodged safely due to constant stamina refill. And opting to do something other than parrying doesn't really amount to anything. The parrallels with Sekiro seem apparent to me here.

For sure. I guess I should've just said that I want UK devs to make V2 actually put his full kit to use. As of now he doesn't even use the fists he himself drops once you beat him. I think it would be cool to see the boss do more advanced stuff.

True, but you'd expect the sequel to not fall into the same pitfalls as much. Bearing in mind also that there's not much variation to the greater fiend rematches beyond adds (Volf), or really fucking awful arenas (Zedonius). And Genshin and Elizabet rematches are back to back, and then after that it's just the final boss.

Even with simultaneous casting and every upgrade and item you can get, magic is still super boring to use, because it's never anything BUT holding two buttons. Coolest thing it got going for it is lightning whip and that skill sucks massive ass. The most efficient way to do magic damage is to just summon the homing orbs. Which you do by...holding a single button. Stop giving people a false impression of what Dragon's Dogma is actually like.

The moves are nice but it's specifically the arenas. Some are vertical. Some are tight and narrow. Almost every other action game puts you into flat circular arenas. I like how you can take a fight from an open courtyard seamlessly into a dojo without the game just locking you into an area until the enemies are dead.

2's grabs are breakable and tend to have visible startup. The enemies can't loop 'em like in 1, and the scarier ones like Kamikaze which are sick af are tied to stuff like dismemberment. And since movement/combat is so much more fluid, grabs don't detract from the fight as much and as often as they did in 1.

You're kidding, right? Enemies in NG1 feel like they can grab you whenever they feel like. The worst part is that it's practically every enemy and they are already pretty aggressive and totally capable of dodging you anyway. It's not like there's a certain enemy type that specializes in grabs but is weak in another area in exchange, every mofo can grab you whenever they feel like it.
It's an issue not just because it feels like bullshit but because it makes the encounters feel samey.

UTs are a great and fun mechanic that reward you for mastery over the enemy and playing aggressive, there are some abuse cases like lunar 360 vs some enemies can be pretty unbalanced, but overall its a balanced game mechanic that requires setup, forethought, and still requires that you outplay the AI. The original idea for them is good, NG2 is just unfinished and unbalanced, what should have happened in NG2 is that UT kills would drop essance that you couldn't use for another UT chain. NG2 you can literally just UT->mow down like 5 guys at once -> OLUT again -> mow down 5 guys again -> repeat forever.

Sometimes when I'm overwhelmed I like the UT because I can relax and reset myself, take a look at what enemies are around me, etc. I only find it getting cutscene simulator tier in NG2, usually for instance essence staggering in NG1 is using the ET which is really quick. What I actually dislike is that you can't use OLY without making is a UT if there is ess around, the move by itself is sweet because it has hyper armor unlike OLX, the trade off is the long recovery time, but its worth it at times. In NG2 it also has a decent chance to decap as well.

Oh yeah, the UT is great for reorienting, that's definitely a nice niche for it, I use it sparingly for exactly that reason and the spin 2 win when I get a crowd of enemies because there's something really nice feeling about landing it in the middle of a crowd and watching the FPS drop to single digits.
All I'm really whinging about is how little use some of the attacks like X->XYX and X->XYY (I think thats the input? The spin kick and multi side kick, they're not great but they're very satisfying when they land). Also the ->Y double jump kick is really cool. It feels like in MN a lot of players really lean on the UT because of the iframes.

Its super fun man, I'm not a huge fan of rougelites because when you get stuck on a hard section you have to replay the entire thing to get back to that spot, but the balance in this one is great, from the start of the run to the end its a great challenge that tests you at all times. Plays a lot like Eternal in some ways, but also its only style, the enemies are crushing on the final difficulty and the builds you can make are a lot of fun to test out.

I played it back when it was only one chapter out and it was good, I didn't really like a lot of aspects such as the reliance on auto targetting weapons/skills. It was also really hard to see enemies until they added the outline option in the menus, and more of the enemies were jobbers. Play the top 6 games in my list if you haven't, all are solid games that force you to play fast and hard with a high skill cap. Serious Sam is the only one that might be slow for some.
Mostly I'm waiting for Ultrakill to finally add a real hard mode and the next id software game. I'll be playing a bunch of mediocre garbo for now, such as Prodeus, which I have poor expectations for.

since this seems like the J-action kino thread, has anyone played FF16? I thought it was pretty good, especially on the higher difficulties, although they needed to limit the eikon supers to 1 or tie it to the limit gauge.
The combat was alright but I had three big problems >1. Clive's basic moveset is too simple. Even DMC4 Nero feels more complex. >2. Cooldowns suck, would have been better if eikons worked like DMC weapons with their own input based movesets or maybe if they were balanced like magic in Kingdom Hearts or classic GOW. >3. The stagger mechanic hurts the flow of combat since enemies will constantly freeze and let you get free hits in for 10 seconds.
That being said I really loved the bosses. They're the best spectacle I've seen in a game since GOW3.
the cooldown issue went away a little for me when I realized a good amount of the eikonic feats are they're own attacks with no cooldown, and you can shorten the cooldowns with full upgrades + equipment. I agree with the stagger messing with combat flow a bit though. I think it would help if you were able to start juggling them when their will gauge is broken.

Its super fun man, I'm not a huge fan of rougelites because when you get stuck on a hard section you have to replay the entire thing to get back to that spot, but the balance in this one is great, from the start of the run to the end its a great challenge that tests you at all times. Plays a lot like Eternal in some ways, but also its only style, the enemies are crushing on the final difficulty and the builds you can make are a lot of fun to test out.

I played it back when it was only one chapter out and it was good, I didn't really like a lot of aspects such as the reliance on auto targetting weapons/skills. It was also really hard to see enemies until they added the outline option in the menus, and more of the enemies were jobbers. Play the top 6 games in my list if you haven't, all are solid games that force you to play fast and hard with a high skill cap. Serious Sam is the only one that might be slow for some.
Mostly I'm waiting for Ultrakill to finally add a real hard mode and the next id software game. I'll be playing a bunch of mediocre garbo for now, such as Prodeus, which I have poor expectations for.

I have come here to say DMC DMC3 is a horrible experience. Enemy designs are at they worse here. So many terrible enemies that were squishy in the previous difficulties are too tanky, even without devil trigger.
It's not even that complicated or anything, it's just tedious.

Glad someone else hates Griffon 2 and I have no idea how I fucking murder him sometimes and the other times he's just an asshole. I know u can cheese on top of the ship but I didn't know that til this year. Mundus 2nd phase isn't too bad, I think nightmare is the hardest boss until u get dantes full moves and then you can counter everything he does way easier.
I bet mission 1 was the hardest one to S rank. That marionette chamber is retarded without the DT costume. Level rankings are supposed to be a measure of consistency throughout a run and not how much you save and reload the level though.

You know how if you hit an enemy who's glowing red with a normal attack (including slide itself) sometimes they stagger backwards while still glowing? It's a convenient way to extend the SoB window but pretty niche since if you cancel into shuriken they get knocked out of it. Anyway, if you do that and then slide into the enemy then it flips them up, still leaving them able to be SoB'd afterwards. This isn't a Kasumi-only thing either.

I'm pretty sure that counter is just hitting S a lot. Or maybe T a lot, I forget which one but it's not hidden or anything. It does have to connect with something though to get the rest of the attacks, and you can get the attack itself with I think SS>SS, can't quite remember but something like that. While it can do insane amounts of damage, it leaves you very open to being punished so use it sparingly.
I have the downloaded PS3 demo for NG3: Razor's Edge, is it worth a damn? When I do bother to play it, it's not like I'm not at all enjoying myself, but overall I don't know how to feel about it. It's amazing how people think a clip of a game about letting you use whatever attacks you want from a large pool to handle encounters as you choose in which all of that is optimized out and yet still shows off some good attack animations and mechanics anyway is supposed to convince people a game is bad. I finally played NG1 and 2 last month, and I completely understand why it's not as popular as DMC, Bayonetta or MGR,
NG is good, but it's just kinda mediocre compared to those.
I recently replayed all 3 ng games with emulation and razors edge. People say that RE has the best combat, but i genuinely dont feel it. Its not bad, but it feels worse to play than 2. Maybe im just a brainlet and have to replay everything on Master Ninja to truly feel it, but so far 2 has the most satisfying combat while RE had its moments but ultimately felt dull in comparison.
I cant explain it the old enemies feel so much tankier to fight or maybe sluggish is the right word. It feels like i cant cut of limbs as quick as in 2, but again that might just be a skill issue.

You're not wrong. Enemies are much more defensive and with how delimbing works you're required to commit to long exhaustive attack strings to get them to either break guard or lose a limb. It tries to amp up the aggression of NG2's combat but because of how long the TTK is on a single enemy that isn't the basic LOA terrorist it feels, as you say, sluggish. As I mentioned earlier, every part of Ryu's arsenal from delimbing to counters to certain combo strings/utilities (Kusarigama's Demon Cutter for example) just got nerfed hard into the ground.

DMC1 is a really short game you can beat in a sitting. Do people even replay 3 & 5's campaign? What do you plan the course out for a few days? Or do you consider mashing in bloody palace the pinnacle of gameplay? At least DMC3 doesn't have a bunch of characters forced upon you every other mission.

I've beaten DMC5 in one sitting in less than 10 hours on DMD, and that was with cutscenes included. Plus the missions in DMC5 are so streamlined and standalone that you can play any of them whenever and have fun. Same thing with BP, you can finish it in less than 2 hours unless you're bad, and it has a suspend feature and lets you play any floor on its own if you want.

It's better than 2 though. That isn't to say 2 is bad, but Bayo is a very clear cut 1 > 3 > 2 as far as the action game part goes, and if 3 had a better enemy roster then it might match 1 since it has the best weapons and bosses of the three overall.
DMC and Bayo fans will never see eye to eye because their games are trying to go for the same niche. DMC and NG are so different the "each of them are good at their own thing so it's pointless to compare" platitude can actually be applied to them. A "definite" NG in the vein of DMC5 would only be more different from DMC as it would accentuate what makes NG unique (unless the devs are stupid).

If you throw a break move or a topple move when the time's not right, the enemies will dodge and counterattack. If you attack enough when the enemy is guarding, you'll get punished. And even when the best strategy is to go for the counterhit, you still need to doge and get the timing right.
Stand still or play like a retard and the game will punish you, specially on Die.
god hand is a 30 fps game so the timing for the counters is very forgiving

Sigma is harder than Black because the first chapter you don't get Lunar, making the hardest chapter in the game even more difficult. You could argue other chapters are harder, but IMO your first MN run chapter 1 will rape you again and again.

The only real issue with the game is that the enemies don't do enough damage. What I would suggest to others is to play and minimize the energy tanks you pick up, find them of course since thats fun, but just don't pick them up.

Even Metroid Prime doesn't resort to shitscan, and enemies can be fun to fight even if the difficulty isn't very high. Games like Quake and Quake 2 are also babby mode games, but I enjoyed them too. Its not like Metroid Prime is rating highly by me, I have it down as just "good". Has the core features of FPS that I like, some fun enemies, cool bosses, great exploration, level design, puzzles, etc. Its better than most boomer shooters that have shit combat, shit levels, shit bosses, and shit exploration.

Changing Prime and Echoes' controls to something more common only makes them less unique, removing their learning curve and making them yet another game that plays the same in an already-oversaturated genre. You can't separate the game from the way it's meant to be interacted with by the player. I'd rather play Onimusha with tank controls, because that's the way it was originally designed. I'd rather get filtered by System Shock 1's old ass controls than play the game just like I would play anything else. I'd rather have Dante with style switching even when it's arguably a pointless mechanic.
A good game builds with its limitations rather than against them. Different controls allow different games to focus on different things. We should do away with the illusion that one given control scheme is "the" control scheme, because the point of videogames isn't to be a 1-to-1 reproduction of how humans work. Instead of pestering that guy because one first person game dared to have lock-on unlike the seas of those that don't, think about all the things that you could with it that those games can't.

You say it when there's no shortage of competitive FPSs with people playing with controller because the auto-aim is that much better, and basically every third person action game has auto lock-on.
No, people simply go by the path of least resistance. It's way easier to design and market a game that plays like most FPSs than one that plays like Prime 1 and 2. Most devs just want to make Doom/Quake/Duke/whatever but with X, why would the experiment with the controls when they also have to do everything else?

Whats crazy about Desync is that it came out BEFORE Eternal or Ultrakill, keep that in mind when you play it and your mind will be blown. REgardless of that, its great fucking game. The only worthwhile aspects about Bulletstorm such as environmental kills and combo scoring are put into it, creating a really fun game that is also a pretty brutal challenge. Probably like base campaign Eternal on Nightmare difficulty~. Also protip you would probably find out yourself, but your dash has iframes btw.

Nah I P ranked all of the second act, but at the time p-2 wasn't released. Its a sin to say, but I wasn't a huge fan of Minos P (liked Flesh Prison a lot though), and I watched a bit of footage of p-2 yesterday and it looks similar, although the arena fights look sick. I was kinda planning on waiting for act 3 (which HOPEFULLY comes with the final diffculty modes) before I went for it since I would need to relearn all my muscle memory.
Interesting that you didn't like the boss, you not a fan of Minos either I take it? I didn't like the fact he just teleports on you and forces you to press dodge, it felt like Souls rolling or Sekiro l1, really boring to me.

Yeah I am not that impressed by Minos and the P2 boss is pretty much just the same thing but harder. In a way he is even more of a Sekiro boss since you can parry his most dangerous attacks and parry had received a buff in the same update and now it also restores your stamina.
Flesh prison this time around was barely a fight since it dies on its own after a while. Very underwhelming.
I think V2 has a potential to be a really great boss if they put effort into higher difficulty modes and make him an actual mirror fight similar to NG doppelgangers.

Oh yeah hes a ton of fun to fight, the whole shooting his coins and him shooting your coins had me in admiration for the dev. Moments like that give me huge hopes for the final difficulty, but also the direction of Minos and the hype he got makes me wonder if it will poison the rest of the game. Probably not, but also the things that would make a final difficulty truly great are things Indie devs struggle with, like giving V2 quake bot tier AI would be the best way to change him, but indie devs and AI are usually oil and water due to how complex AI must be to program.
Stuff like Leviathan in Ultrakill had me worried for the future of the game, maybe its just a one time mistake, but what a disappointment, and v2's second fight was great, but a retreat and he killed him off. Maybe he makes a secret zombie v2 fight in act 3, I kinda hope so myself since the other boss aren't nearly as good.

Doppleganger fights are fun, but kinda show off the unbalanced aspect of NG in regards to blocking, especially since the cpu has like frame 1 blocking after an attack input. Makes the most reliable way to deal with him GT spam. Also the Ninpo/ranged spam was kinda aids when you don't get the same thing.

I mentioned it in the previous post, it fully restores stamina now which imo is huge and turns the boss into a joke since he in particular is very easy to parry, and his other attacks can be dodged safely due to constant stamina refill. And opting to do something other than parrying doesn't really amount to anything. The parrallels with Sekiro seem apparent to me here.

True, but you'd expect the sequel to not fall into the same pitfalls as much. Bearing in mind also that there's not much variation to the greater fiend rematches beyond adds (Volf), or really fucking awful arenas (Zedonius). And Genshin and Elizabet rematches are back to back, and then after that it's just the final boss.

The moves are nice but it's specifically the arenas. Some are vertical. Some are tight and narrow. Almost every other action game puts you into flat circular arenas. I like how you can take a fight from an open courtyard seamlessly into a dojo without the game just locking you into an area until the enemies are dead.
The only other action game that does that comes to mind is fucking DmC lol . Unless you wanna count ultrakill I guess

Lord knows how many times I've been clearly mashing roll cause I CAN TELL there's a throw coming and still got thrown anyways for some reason I can't even explain. Like the throws are frame one with massive disjoints or something. And even when the throw attempt CLEARLY whiffs, and I'm still (somehow) I'm range, when I try to punish, guess what? There's zero fuckin recovery. So I don't even get to punish the enemy despite making such a huge read on a very lethal attack. Throws are CLEARLY unbalanced in this regard.
Grabs aren't even as issue in the first game compared to the second
2's grabs are breakable and tend to have visible startup. The enemies can't loop 'em like in 1, and the scarier ones like Kamikaze which are sick af are tied to stuff like dismemberment. And since movement/combat is so much more fluid, grabs don't detract from the fight as much and as often as they did in 1.

The worst part is that it's practically every enemy and they are already pretty aggressive and totally capable of dodging you anyway. It's not like there's a certain enemy type that specializes in grabs but is weak in another area in exchange, every mofo can grab you whenever they feel like it.
It's an issue not just because it feels like bullshit but because it makes the encounters feel samey.

UTs are a great and fun mechanic that reward you for mastery over the enemy and playing aggressive, there are some abuse cases like lunar 360 vs some enemies can be pretty unbalanced, but overall its a balanced game mechanic that requires setup, forethought, and still requires that you outplay the AI. The original idea for them is good, NG2 is just unfinished and unbalanced, what should have happened in NG2 is that UT kills would drop essance that you couldn't use for another UT chain. NG2 you can literally just UT->mow down like 5 guys at once -> OLUT again -> mow down 5 guys again -> repeat forever.
I actually prefer spamming the 360 on the dragon sword over the standard UT. I guess because it doesn't slow the game down with a quasi-cutscene and flows a bit better.
Sometimes when I'm overwhelmed I like the UT because I can relax and reset myself, take a look at what enemies are around me, etc. I only find it getting cutscene simulator tier in NG2, usually for instance essence staggering in NG1 is using the ET which is really quick. What I actually dislike is that you can't use OLY without making is a UT if there is ess around, the move by itself is sweet because it has hyper armor unlike OLX, the trade off is the long recovery time, but its worth it at times. In NG2 it also has a decent chance to decap as well.
Oh yeah, the UT is great for reorienting, that's definitely a nice niche for it, I use it sparingly for exactly that reason and the spin 2 win when I get a crowd of enemies because there's something really nice feeling about landing it in the middle of a crowd and watching the FPS drop to single digits.
All I'm really whinging about is how little use some of the attacks like X->XYX and X->XYY (I think thats the input? The spin kick and multi side kick, they're not great but they're very satisfying when they land). Also the ->Y double jump kick is really cool. It feels like in MN a lot of players really lean on the UT because of the iframes.

The combat was alright but I had three big problems

the cooldown issue went away a little for me when I realized a good amount of the eikonic feats are they're own attacks with no cooldown, and you can shorten the cooldowns with full upgrades + equipment. I agree with the stagger messing with combat flow a bit though. I think it would help if you were able to start juggling them when their will gauge is broken.

I have come here to say DMC DMC3 is a horrible experience. Enemy designs are at they worse here. So many terrible enemies that were squishy in the previous difficulties are too tanky, even without devil trigger.

You know how if you hit an enemy who's glowing red with a normal attack (including slide itself) sometimes they stagger backwards while still glowing? It's a convenient way to extend the SoB window but pretty niche since if you cancel into shuriken they get knocked out of it. Anyway, if you do that and then slide into the enemy then it flips them up, still leaving them able to be SoB'd afterwards. This isn't a Kasumi-only thing either.
I'm pretty sure that counter is just hitting S a lot. Or maybe T a lot, I forget which one but it's not hidden or anything. It does have to connect with something though to get the rest of the attacks, and you can get the attack itself with I think SS>SS, can't quite remember but something like that. While it can do insane amounts of damage, it leaves you very open to being punished so use it sparingly.

I finally played NG1 and 2 last month, and I completely understand why it's not as popular as DMC, Bayonetta or MGR,
NG is good, but it's just kinda mediocre compared to those.
I recently replayed all 3 ng games with emulation and razors edge. People say that RE has the best combat, but i genuinely dont feel it. Its not bad, but it feels worse to play than 2. Maybe im just a brainlet and have to replay everything on Master Ninja to truly feel it, but so far 2 has the most satisfying combat while RE had its moments but ultimately felt dull in comparison.

You're not wrong. Enemies are much more defensive and with how delimbing works you're required to commit to long exhaustive attack strings to get them to either break guard or lose a limb. It tries to amp up the aggression of NG2's combat but because of how long the TTK is on a single enemy that isn't the basic LOA terrorist it feels, as you say, sluggish. As I mentioned earlier, every part of Ryu's arsenal from delimbing to counters to certain combo strings/utilities (Kusarigama's Demon Cutter for example) just got nerfed hard into the ground.
What they mean is that 3re has the best combos, not combat. The move pool is huge and you can flow between any attacks on the fly into basically anything you want.

DMC1 is definitely up there alongside 3 and 5. I really do like it but for me it can get repetitive on repeat play throughs, good to go back to to get reacquainted with the basics. I never get bored with DMC5 totally preferential though.

DMC1 is a really short game you can beat in a sitting. Do people even replay 3 & 5's campaign? What do you plan the course out for a few days? Or do you consider mashing in bloody palace the pinnacle of gameplay? At least DMC3 doesn't have a bunch of characters forced upon you every other mission.
I've beaten DMC5 in one sitting in less than 10 hours on DMD, and that was with cutscenes included. Plus the missions in DMC5 are so streamlined and standalone that you can play any of them whenever and have fun. Same thing with BP, you can finish it in less than 2 hours unless you're bad, and it has a suspend feature and lets you play any floor on its own if you want.

yes completely unironically, the core gameplay is just so addictive to me that I can fight the same enemies for hours and not get bored. i can’t say the same for DMC1 because of dante’s far more limited move list. also you can absolutely beat DMC3 and 5’s campaign in one sitting.

Good thing Capcom gives us arcadey side modes that outshine the campaign. That's why I like Resident Evil 6 Mercenaries. Also if your sitting isn't an hour it doesn't count.

It's better than 2 though. That isn't to say 2 is bad, but Bayo is a very clear cut 1 > 3 > 2 as far as the action game part goes, and if 3 had a better enemy roster then it might match 1 since it has the best weapons and bosses of the three overall.
DMC and Bayo fans will never see eye to eye because their games are trying to go for the same niche. DMC and NG are so different the "each of them are good at their own thing so it's pointless to compare" platitude can actually be applied to them. A "definite" NG in the vein of DMC5 would only be more different from DMC as it would accentuate what makes NG unique (unless the devs are stupid).

DMC and Bayo also have auto aim. Most games that aren't a shooter have it.
