    Melinagays cannot stop losing
At least Ranni already has a fleshed out questline and ending, she doesn't really need anymore content

Melinagays have yet to come to terms that the only role her character served was as kindling

And that's a hell of a lot more than most of ER's characters have going on. You can skip interacting with pretty much every npc that isn't named Ranni, and you'd miss absolutely nothing of value. Why they even bothered to include characters, only to have them pointlessly fart around the world and die, as they always do, is honestly beyond me. Waifugayging aside, the game doesn't have a single interesting or memorable character.

            >farts around the world
            >dies
            Wow, what a riveting questline.
I'm exaggerating a bit, characters certainly have lines that make them sympathetic or likeable and all that, but they just have nothing going on beyond that. No involvement, no theming, none of them feel like they're actually on a journey similar to yours. It's been a long time since DS1 and characters like Siegmeyer or Solaire, yet Fromsoft seems to have forgotten how to write them.

I thought Yura, Alexander and Diallos were great, but FromSoft is enamored with the idea of guys going on quests and meeting their end abruptly because it's le grimdark man (except for Alexander guy's a Gigachad)

                Anonymous

Alexander and Diallos both had solid foundations, but Alexander was too much of a one note character, and Diallos felt like half his questline was missing.

                >He farted around the world and died

Alexander is just Siegward only he doesn't have a competent daughter to kill him when he goes hollow. If anything he goes out on a high note, to somebody who defeated Radahn, the Fire Giant and other strong opponents. I do like its implied he killed the dragon there, since if Alexander dies theres a dragon resting there in his place.

Siegmeyer had a little more going on, though. Not all of it directly stated, but very strongly implied. He clearly was someone who had already settled down back home, with a wife and daughter, when he was forced into exile by the undead curse. His journey through the game is his attempt at maybe curing himself, maybe just having one final adventure, but it's fairly clear that he had some hope of returning home one day, and only went hollow when Sieglinde delivered his wife's message.
He puts on the airs of a boisterous warrior, and the game uses him as the butt of the joke a few too many times, but he's actually a very relatable and tragic character, who feels real, despite the fantastic premise. Him being this powerful knight is really just an almost incidental aside that happens to empower him to attempt the journey in the first place. They also did a way better job at tying him to the player, with the way you run into him all the time, help him out, him wanting to repay you eventually, and so on. He's simple, but he's a well written, fleshed out character, and that's what makes him memorable.

Tbf Siegmeyer and Solaire are like the ground zero for "cool wholesome guy goes insane/dies tragically/gets corrupted" questline that they reuse every game for almost every character. From is absolutely capable of writing compelling characters if they want to (see AC6), they just choose not to because it's easier and more familiar to the fanbase to rehash the same old tropes, it's not like they complain.

Siegmeyer and Solaire were the original template, but also just well written characters who tied into the themes of the game without being on the nose about it. They fell victim to the average player being a fricking moron who can't think beyond le funny sleeping guy and praise the sun lmao, and Fromsoft being honestly just kind of stupid and believing that memes are what players actually want. Which is also why the games veered so hard down the "it's so hard, you're gonna die so many times" route, as opposed to just being classic fantasy adventures that reward playing conservatively and being observant, and want the player to take even trash mobs seriously. Maybe it's something that gets lost in translation. As in, From sees players affectionately poking fun at some aspect of the games, and they think it's 100% serious.

See this is funny because you're right but its also realizing that all Fromsoft had to do was have Melina or other NPCs comment on their emotional wellbeing or quest states, even if vaguely. Like Melina comments once on Boc why the frick couldn't they do that for others? Why doesn't she warn you about Hyetta or tell you that Millicent reminds her of someone familiar or tell you that Alexander needs help and so on? The world being as big as it is should've meant more varied and personal NPC quests instead they all:
          >meet you once
          >give vague ideas on what goal or quest or personal achievement they have
          >change or stay in one area depending on you playing the game, doesn't help the world is so big you can potentially miss them in some aclove
          >go insane randomly or die

            >Why doesn't she warn you about Hyetta
She tangentially does at the end of the questline despite not saying anything until you're already within spitting distance of the three fingers :^)

That template was started in dark souls 1 except instead of insanity they go hollow.
