no that anon has a point, if what I'm hearing about Starfield is true(that it is the least modable bethesda game to release) then the creation engine's only real purpose has expired.
better to sack the entire team and start with a small team of veterans like Ted Petersen and his crew working on Wayward Realms

I'm not sure what started this trend of defending Gamebryo online. It's always the same talking points--no other game could do what these games do; no other game could allow combat and advanced dialogue options; this isn't the same gamebryo, it's a whole new engine.

They're each insane takes, all incorrect and incomplete. It's also a strange way to debate.

I think people are just deathly afraid of the prospect of losing the ability to mod, but there are tons and tons of games and engines that allow you to mod.

Gamebryo is 'good' but it's not good for the consumer. It's good for Bethesda because they can have a half thought idea and then force a shitty version of it in their engine.

And customers have such a low IQ understanding of what a game even is they just accept it. Get them the ability to aim at a gun at something and that's half the battle right there, GOTY. It's insane.

Why would they reinvent the wheel, the issues bethesda has is because of bethesda, not gamebryo, if bethesda remade gamebryo it would be worse, because they don't have the competent people to do so. If the rumor that bethesda doesnt have the source code are true though, that's a pretty big handicap, if I was Todd I would just build on top of openMW

            Anonymous

30 FPS is NOT enough when it comes to Gamebryo (or "Creation").
The game MUST be at 60FPS at all times because so much shit at the core of the engine is bound to the gamelogic, to framerate.
Just like how Oblivion, F3, Skyrim, and F4 start going extra fucked up as framerate gets too low or is uncapped, Starfield too suffers in the same ways, especially in physics and process handling. Low FPS makes NPCs react far slower to the point they won't even register triggers and reactions.
Either they pick a new engine that isn't so ass backwards, or they fuck off with these awful bloated modern graphics technologies that tank performance and make the game look like it would still able to run on a system from a decade ago, using art direction to make up for the lower "fidelity" like every fucking game should.

Those games sold because they were open world RPGs in an era when open world RPGs weren't that common. Since then we've had plenty of other open world RPGs that do everything those games does and more and better.
Starfield couldn't even rival what Skyrim did (big, persistent, open world), it's 99% procedurally generated slop. Starfield feels like a 2008 game released in 2023.

Given Todd is the one in charge of this shit, it falls on Todd to take the blame. Fire his ass, let the team move on to a better engine, let them drop the awful design decisions Todd is obviously enforcing and let them start making better games.

          Anonymous

I agree with all of this.

But Bethesda is successful, and they're successful on their own terms. They use their own in-house engine that all their games are built around. They've got the best distribution deal on the planet. They were able to re-release Skyrim 17 times for Christ's sake. Imagine being able to ensure that every human on the planet at least knew about your game by releasing it on every platform for two decades.
That's an incredible amount of power and stability, and pretty much the end goal of a development company from a certain perspective. So from that perspective--a business perspective--, they have absolutely zero reason to change.

I just think it makes more sense for fans to walk away. They just arent a company that is built to exceed expectations for a certain type of fan.

            Anonymous

The last two Bethesda games have been bad (Fallout 76 and Starfield). They won even release Starfields sales figures and instead just keep saying "game pass players".

It's obviously nowhere near as successful as they use to be, and their next game will be even worse and sell even worse.

    >What does ES6 need to de to avoid printing billions of dollars like Starfield
People who played Starfield wanted Fallout 4 but in space, and they got exactly what they wanted. People who play Elder Scrolls 6 want Skyrim II. They're going to get what they want.
In 2 years, you'll have regular threads posting modlists for Starfield and talking about how much you hate Elder Scrolls 6. And then 2 years after that, you'll be posting your modlists for Elder Scrolls 6. How can someone know that? Because Ganker has been shitting on every Bethesda release since Oblivion. After Oblivion, it was Fallout 3. After that, it was New Vegas, and then Skyrim, followed by Fallout 4. There are even constant, active generals for ESO and 76.

Eventually, you're going to have to step back and acknowledge that the game company that keeps releasing billion dollar games to people who continuously buy every game they make aren't going to change their format. Why would they, when every game they release gets this same pushback on launch, but keeps ludicrous amounts of money and maintains stupidly-large player bases that singlehandedly drive mod sites into positions of power?

The reason Starfield sucks is because it doesn't feel like an interconnected overworld like other Bethesda games. And I don't want to hear the lame excuse of "durr they're different planets" when every other good sci-fi game has managed to make each planet feel unique and with its own place in the game. Starfield's needless chase to have a thousand barren planets did nothing but hurt the game.

    1. Completely revamp stealth system, actually have proper alert states and have enemies be alerted when they find a corpse (maybe even if they just see something out of place, depends on the NPC's stealth skill), alerted NPCs will no longer take enhanced stealth attack damage (or much less of it). While they can go back from full alert, there will still be an "enhanced alert state" in which they take less stealth damage and see you easier.

This is to nerf the "stealth archer/sniper" build that's only reward but no risk

    2. Add a proper parcour system and the ability to level around it, think Dying Light mobility. It works best when wearing just clothes, slightly reduced in light armor, severely penalized in heavy armor. It would allow "Prince of Persia" builds and work into the new stealth system. Also would encourage more melee stealth over ranged stealth

    3. Have magic affect the environment, even if you gotta shamelessly copy Genshin Impact or Baldur's Gate 3 (ideally Zelda BotW/TotK) but magic needs to affect the surroundings.

    4. AI needs to be capable of group actions, such as forming a shield wall. Or "tanks" covering mages and archers, mages healing and buffing allies instead of just themselves, etc. Make taking on groups more dangerous and tactical.
