It feels extremely wrong to be able to literally play almost every game in history on a PC, even up to the rarest ones. By comparison, Nintendo charges you to play *some* retro games in a small library updated on their whim.
It feels extremely wrong to be able to literally play almost every game in history on a PC, even up to the rarest ones. By comparison, Nintendo charges you to play *some* retro games in a small library updated on their whim.
Why would it feel wrong? If I bought the games why wouldn't I be allowed to run it on whatever I want?
>if I bought the games
no one does that lmao. No one. No one will go through the hassle of learning how to unpack their discs or cartridges.
I bought Mario Wonder, I'm allowed to play it on my PC.
only if you dump it yourself
I just get it from my Micro SD card.
I would gladly pay for official retro re-releases if they were:
A) Sanely priced
B) Available on all platforms
C) Offered the original experience and the same level of customization as emulation
But they never do. The emulated re-releases are always insanely overpriced, force garbage filters, lock you to some arbitrary (like 720p) resolution with no AA, and offer zero customization. Nintendo locks everything to their tablet and Sony locks their classics to their console or even worse, their streaming service. Remastered re-releases usually force upscaling, AI-filtered backgrounds, replaced textures, ugly modern UIs, there's almost never a purist "original experience" mode. Until then I will emulate and pirate and I'm not going to feel bad for it. Occasionally I will throw them a bone and buy the re-release, but then emulate it myself anyway when actually playing.
Maybe legally. Morally, who gives a fuck if you own the game.
Bullshit. I grew up and bought all these games along the way and the majority of my cartridges and cds degrade, skip, and stop working. To be expected to repeatedly repurchase (which for most games now you cant) is crap. That is where emulation is and always should be the archival standard. Fucking dumb shortsighted children and idiot collectors paying 500 dollars for another copy of FFVII think otherwise.
>degrade and decay
nagger dont try to lie to someone with a 23 year old N64 and games still working. Shit never decays
>bro your saves just don't stop working
retard
Skill issue
Yuzu EA is honestly the most amazing piece of software I've ever seen. The devs should get a Nobel peace prize.
the devs should be imprisoned for life
Switch emulators aren't even anywhere near the actual good ones like Dolphin or nuPPSSPP
it's not? I've literally had the games work perfectly with Vulkan
I mean same, but it's still rough in some games like XB2. Granted, that runs like shit on actual hardware so I shouldn't be too surprised
Well, Anon, Dolphin has been worked on for like 15 years at this point. Plus, the Wii and Gamecube are simpler consoles than the Switch.
Right now NSW emulation is serviceable and you can beat games just fine with it, but still has ways to go.
That said, it's still better than Xbox or Saturn emulation.
>Saturn emulation
there's no logical reasoning that this shit should be bad in current year
For a fifth gen console, the Saturn is more complicated than it should be.
That plus no one cares about the Saturn that much, especially in the west.
Even with complex consoles, if the community is passionate and autistic enough, an emulator will be made. That's why Nintendo emus tend to be the best: they have the most autistic fanbase. Only exception is the N64 as there's no much to it beyond Zelda, Mario 64 and a few others
The reason why N64 and Saturn don't have great emulation is their architecture is poorly documented and only used in that system.
It's why Dolphin has better emulation and support, it used a common, well-documented processor. The N64 didn't. (Saturn didn't even use triangle-based polygons.)
Yeah, that too. Devs basically have to go through more trial and error compared to other consoles' emulators.
It's also why PPSSPP is so good as some docs related to the PSP's inner workings were leaked or something
Imagine a company still profiting off of 20+yo games that they didn't even have a hand in developing.
Imagine paying money for a 20+yo game
Imagine games
>Imagine a company still profiting off of 20+yo games that they didn't even have a hand in developing.
Examples being?
>Old metal gear/castlevania games
Kojima is gone. Toru Hagihara and Iga are also gone
>Skull girls.
The guys who made it, got fired and the naggers who are in "legal possession" of this game's rights, do their best to censor it. Everyone should be pirating these games
>It feels extremely wrong
the billion dollar corporation doesn't love you, anon. you don't have to defend it.
Stopped giving a shit about the companies when they started turning off their platform digital shops.
Emulation devalues, but standard company practice ensures that access was worth nothing to begin with. Most important thing about a game is being able to fucking play it.
>evil
zoomers man
So only put a few at a time on a flash drive and swap them out when you beat them.
all piracy is evil even the most minor. Everyone involved with it needs to be executed.
>hes still opening them by the exe
you got so much to learn son but also none of these companies give a single shit about you playing their games
What's wrong with opening by the exe?
consoles are the real evil.
There is no good and evil, only games and PCs too weak to run them.
>PCs too weak to run them
an MSI laptop about $600, about the same price or even less, than consoles can do everything.
Evil is reselling us the same eight megabytes packaged in three ways every year.
go back to r*ddit/twitter/whatever homosexual circlejerking cesspool you came from, nagger
kys fucking subhuman zoomer
Playing current, still sold games is a bit evil yes.
But everything you can't pay in a way the developers receive money is completely moral to pirate or emulate.
If you pay 5000 dollars in an MSX game, every cent of those 5000 dollars will go to the dude that sold you it, not the japanese guy that hammered the code.
It's evil to hold old media hostage to be profited upon when none of the original creators will get a cent of what you pay to play those games """officially""".
>Nintendo charges you to play *some* retro games in a small library
>the vast majority of games you can't get anywhere outside overpaying some ebay homosexual $300 for a cartridge that may or may not work
>emulating a free, infinite copy of that game, is somehow immoral
You shouldn't feel bad about "taking" those games, but playing one of infinite games might feel daunting or meaningless.
There's still ways to invest yourself. Make a spreadsheet, use an online backlog tracker, make videos or a blog, use retroachievements. Pick something that will make you care and be selective with what you play outside of what some nip boomers pick based on online polls
This is your mind on capitalism
it's being a law abiding citizen of a civilized country (USA)
more like a goy cattle slave colony full of shitskins and fags where they mutilate childrens genitals
lmao burgerbroken thirdie at it again
>It feels extremely wrong
Fucking why
because hes either mentally retarded or hes too stupid to buy the correct controllers
>it feels extremely wrong to be able to run software on a machine that is capable and powerful enough to interpret most software
sounds like a you problem
All those games were developed on PCs anyways, you're just bringing them home
reminder even if you buy the games illegally, Nintendo considers modding a federal crime, which is the reason you presumably emulate to begin with. That includes uncensor patches, 60 FPS mods, etc. Federal crime.
they also don't want you to play the only good version of brawl
because modding goes against the artist's vision
There are endless cases where it's painfully clear the artists didn't had the time or ROM space to realize their vision.
I honestly would not mind as much if you couldn't emulate the fucking Switch, a modern console still producing games
okay so are you suggesting they should take forever to make a functional emulator?
I think companies should just outright sell us the ROMs legally through a web store at this point and let us use whatever emulator we want
I agree but you can't put DRM on a ROM so they won't do it.
Reminding me why I don't touch console games Ganker. Too much drama.
>make naive question about emulators
>tons of effort posts for once directly address the topic
>abandon thread
Thanks OP, very cool
Emulation as a concept is obviously great, but the execution isn't. There are still countless games you can't play (we'll at least) and that would he where it's worth lies, rescuing those titles from being locked on a forgotten or unpopular platform.
what you can do is start a petition to get a game attention then hope companies take notice. That's legal.
Emulation is legal.
Emulating games that you dont own is illegal.
Emulating a retro game that nintendo is pushing for a retarded high price in their store is morally right.
>It feels extremely wrong to be able to literally read almost every book in history in a library, even up to the rarest ones.
Your right. We should just lose those games to history because companies rather games rot than sort out who owns some small time game made by 5 guys over a pizza.
why would anyone ask this in a crime-ridden, third world shithole like Ganker? It will only lean one way.
Because PC vegans are constantly seeking validation and evangelizing their cult
>Grew up playing a now "retro" console
>Enjoy all the games I bought/were gifted to me as a child/teenager
>wear and tear from decades of enjoyment take their toll, games are lost, discs, pins degrade
>want to replay those games one day
>the company that made those games/consoles no longer makes them
>No remasters
>No availability on a virtual console or subscription server
>go online for some referbished gear
>Turbo tendies are charging hundreds of dollars for semi maintained gear
>emulation is free
Look anon, I didn't want to have to blow a couple of hours learning about emulation and searching for the right software and roms, but I'm just not going to give my money to some coomlector tranny, I'm not waiting for companies that hold their old titles hostage until they need to drum up support after a bad quarter
>enjoyed fine steak and hash as a kid
>cant afford it as an adult due to bad choices in life
>perform a dine and dash
see that logic?

>A food analogy

>enjoyed a meal from a restaurant as a child

>can no longer find the same meal the way they made it

Don't care.
I bought my single player game, I have the right to do what I want with it.
I will mod my games
I will maintain my rom collection
I will use cheats to make my experience enjoyable
I will share my collection with whomever wants it
I own everything
I am happy.
Cope seethe dilate and inevitably have a nice day.
you will care when the cops knock
>"it's the police, you're under arrest for playing pokemon yellow version."
more like
>you're under arrest for grand theft of intellectual property and hardware
Even Nintendo doesn't typically go after the people merely playing the games, they almost always go after the people hosting the roms instead.
curiously, why haven't the rom sites hosting the shit for well over 20 years or fitgirl been slain yet?
They take down rom sites all the time, don't you remember Emuparadise?
Emuparadise had been up for like nearly two decades before it went down.
>he is unaware
It's impossible to stop. You take down one site and two more will spring up.
find the people hosting them. The seriousness of this should be treated like the war on drugs.
>The seriousness of this should be treated like the war on drugs.
A massive waste of time and money?
Why do people who post this always conveniently leave out the fact that the Xecuter guys were selling their CFW for $20 along with hosting ROMs
because it doesn't fit the narrative
when will they knock? it's been 20 years
Nah
No. Every single video game you've ever played begin on a PC. Somewhere out there there's a PC version of Twilight Princess on someone's computer.
>simping for fortune 500 companies
Why can't PCnaggers just be satisfied with their native exclusives and multiplatforms? Why do they feel entitled to be able to expand their library with what shouldn't be theirs? I wanted to beat the shit out of the OP image when I saw it.
Because platform exclusivity is anti consumer retarded shit.
It should be like the DVD or something.
>Renting 20 year old poorly emulated roms
>Bootlicking a multi-million company
tendie subhumans are disgusting.
I only emulate things that are out of support, i still dont emulate 3DS because mine is still working and playing 2 screen games on a pc just feels wrong. In the case of switch having one hacked or emulate its games is too much of a hassle compared to just buy the stuff i want
If you believe that culture should be archived for future generations, then piracy is nothing but a side effect of that effort. Corporations don't care about anything they've created if it didn't make them money.
What good would roms be without emulators 50 years later when all the Switches are in landfills because everything is chinkshit and nothing is built to last anymore.
>be interviewed by happy Nintendo employee over your generous support for their products
>accidentally reveal you have some illegal ROMs
>friendly facade dissipates into hostility, immediately
Why would you need to emulate Puyo Puyo Tetris? That game already has a PC release
I'm amazed at the people that brag they'll never be caught or some shit after decades. It's all a matter of time. Google knows everything you do. Even if you use a VPN to torrent shit, they *see* you. You're on the watchlist.
who fucking cares
the people that don't want to have to commit suicide out of nowhere care
And what incentive would they have to tell Nintendo that on November 5th 2023, Anon downloaded the complete SNES romset?
the incentive is when Nintendo threatens to sue if they withhold information
lol
Just think of the sheer volume of roms downloaded by the sheer number of people over the past 25 years or so, then how often you've heard of someone getting arrested for downloading roms. The chances of getting nabbed (not that they've ever tried to do that to individual downloaders) would be infinitesimal. You'd have greater a chance of winning the lottery, after which you could use those funds to pay for any legal fines. So if you're paranoid just play the lottery I guess.
roms sure. But not NSPs and modern repacks
There's literally, and i mean LITERALLY 10s of thousands of NSP downloads for each and every bigger game, and that's just on like ONE file hosting site... if not 100,000s of downloads per games out there if you combine all the file hosts.
You think ANYONE, even the big bad Nintenderp would go after 100s of thousands or potentially millions of ppl downloading NSPs?
you're a fucking retard
>millions of people
not that many people pirate. In fact, the sample size last indicated the people that pirate are pretty minimal. That should be an easy reason to find the minority of people, no?
I think spending your time on Ganker trying to make people think emulation will get them arrested is a retarded waste of time and I think responding to obvious shitposters who are just bored trying to waste time is also retarded
> trying to make people think emulation will get them arrested is a retarded waste of time
you do get arrested though
show me one case where a person was arrested solely for emulating as an end user (no distribution)
osama bin laden
oh fuck he's right
having a romset at your fingertips makes it hard to dedicate time to a single game, but emulation overall is cool and you get to play more games this year than a youtube collector would
I like seeing higher res in switch games
Simple is
For me is the CRT filters
I like how retards will argue over something simple as controller binds on emulation
when nintendo pretty much tells them what is the best binds for playing n64
the right analog stick is the only proper way to use c buttons on a modern controller
Well the bigger issue is the nintendo 64 has a 6-face layout like a genesis controller and that's pretty much gone extinct, but ADDITIONALLY the c-buttons were also used as a second d-pad in some games since it was inherited genetically from the Virtual boy.
tl;dr the n64 controller a shitty incest baby
the gamecube pretty much confirms that the only reason the n64 had c buttons were that they were too lazy to come up with a analog stick that wasn't retarded and have a non stupid controller layout
the c buttons were a mistake
ZOOM ZOOM
brain rot
>It feels extremely wrong to be able to literally play almost every game in history on a PC, even up to the rarest ones. By comparison, Nintendo charges you to play *some* retro games in a small library updated on their whim.
how anti-consumer of you
What’s the point of these bait threads?
I've gone through this entire thread and all I literally see are excuses for being poor and lazy to justify crime. Fuck all of you.
okay but you just to justify a 2000-3000$ piece of plastic and pcb
work hard in your studies, get a well-paying job live a conservative lifestyle (dont be a fucking retard and blow shit on expensive food, cars), preferably get a wife (but no kids) and 2000 dollars becomes chump change
or I could wait until I die waiting for a virtual console release
lmao
you have a odd sense of humor anon
>just somehow magically get money and burn it on stupid shit and you'll have money still
>having a career is magic
This is how stupid non Americans are btw. Remember that.
>having a career suddenly means you have thousands of dollars appear out of thin air and you can throw it away like a fool
>rich people are bad with money
I love this meme
It's mostly a service issue. I guarantee if there was a Steam for roms which had competent and consistent emulation and presentation where publishers could easily submit their old games, I guarantee the income from retro games would skyrocket.
I don't see emulation as evil.
I see platform exclusivity as evil and monopolistic practice. If developer doesn't release his game for my platform and expect me to use some other platform he should express his opinion to anti-monopoly service in my jurisdiction.
>muh FOOD
you don't have to go to IHops every morning, Denny's for Lunch, then go to an all-you-can-eat buffet at dinner for over 200 dollars. You can service your 3 meals a day with a can of tuna, home made rice, and a bottle of water for less than 30 dollars.
As long as you're actually playing and beating these games instead of just showing off how much you're "flipping off The Man"
THe other day I watched a video of some dude showcasing a graphical glitch on Paper Mario. Apparently during Shooting Star Summit --or the city with the little stars, can't remember, the ground has a rainbow gradient that changes colors as you walk. On emulators, however, this effect is broken and the ground stays purple.
Does anyone know if this effect works with Angrylion's plugin? N64 emulation is better than ever but still not perfect.
Do any of these even have ray tracing? What's the point in playing them?
No, Emulation is good, Piracy is evil. Stop conflating the two.
Counterpoint: both emulation and piracy are good
Also this for both
The only logical reason is usually emu devs not caring so much. Are there noticeable Saturn exclusives?
Theres a couple of saturn exclusives
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Sega_Saturn-only_games
No, you're just indoctrinated into corpo bootlicking.
Copyright is evil. Human progress is based on copying. Imagine what we could have if every company didn't have to remake brand new assets for every object? What could you make with access to all of it?
literally just installed yuzu on a whim earlier today. had suika game up and running in a few minutes. least-involved i've ever had to be with an emulator in terms of setup.
>thread made to discourage piracy and emulation
>people just regress to talking about games
why
Because discouraging piracy and emulation is silly.
Nobody cares about amerimutt's rules.
>it feels wrong
then don't do it, i don't give a shit what you do and i don't care what you think about what i do
