It could be really satisfying to be on the losing side, see your allies fall in combat, your cities burn, barely escape with your life, flee en masse, have a last stand, watch it all come crashing down, and die in glory so that a few might live. I don't like to say nice things about the movie but The last Jedi works on that level, with the good guys under constant onslaught, losing ground for the entire movie, holding out against impossible odds, and only a few young whippersnappers getting away while the old guard must give their lives. Despicable shit in the context of Star Wars but if you take it on it's own, it's kind of compelling.

Then again this is sort of what happened at the Undercity and I didn't care much for that.

The fact you felt the need to say this proves you were insecure about the possibility of such a ridiculous faction existing in the first place, which means it probably wasn't believable to you either. The simplest answer is that it isn't. It isn't believable.

Yeah but like the Legion how long do they last? They'll resort to infighting and backstabbing when the charismatic leader dies.

Yes Caesar knows this himself. He mostly wanted to plant the seeds of society and have an almost second fall of Rome.

        Anonymous

They won't. They're a short term order that's meant to live in a small area as long as their leader lives.

If they tried to expand, they'd get BTFO by everyone else. When Caesar's brain tumor kills him, they'll get BTFO by any faction who learns this.

The only reason the Legion seems successful in NV is because the NCR is horrifically mismanaged and spread paper thin, so any resistance basically cripples them.

But their territory is stated to be around as large as the NCR with most of Arizona under their control with parts of New Mexico and stated to be moving into Colorado.

it's literally only being held together thanks to Caesar, once he's dead that's frickin it, plus it's a lot of territory but probably nothing people ruled over wise

              >wasn't it a case of just too fast expansion and the same mistakes of MURRICA in their timeline started to rear its ugly head
An issue of lack of supplies for how much they expanded. And a bit of real life issues as the NCR has very little water supplies which makes lake mead very useful. And multiple wars with the brotherhood of steel that has fricked their economy(with the brotherhood directly destroying their gold reserves fricking their currency) and loss of life. Kimball being a war hawk who's surrounding his ranks with nepotism hires is just a symptom of the problem.

Who the frick is "everyone else" if not the NCR? The BoS despite being very reclusive and staying in their bunkers? Followers of the Apocalypse despite not fighting anyone ever? The shitty tribes explicitly stated to get destroyed or brought into the Legion by Honest Hearts? There's nobody else big enough to take them on besides the NCR.

                Anonymous

Not directly stated to be the midwest faction but Caesar mentions running into the brotherhood up in Colorado, with them not actually remembering where their original bunker was. This actually implies an Van Buren reference of a bunker in that region that went rogue. But Veronica does indeed mention them as a branch that went off the grid near Chicago, and also mentions the east coast Brotherhood being in a civil war.

              Anonymous

True, though the midwest BoS isn't talked about too much outside Tactics so I kinda forgot about that, either way it shows that the Legion can deal with them if needed, which probably won't happen often given they have barely any tech.

Unless you view the game through the lense of moronic modern politics there's really nothing wrong with the Legion.
Caesars usage of the Roman Model works pretty well in the context of the universe.
Not everyone in Fallout is a gigachad who can turn from a useless dirt poor farmer to the person who can take over fricking post-war Vegas.

Even so, the results speak for themselves.
Regardless of how people view their shit like slavery and brutality it clearly works against the tribes and factions they've come across here (for now atlease).
Unlike many other places in post war america a dirt farmer from arizona could walk from flagstaff to phoenix by themselves and not be constantly attacked by wienersuckers and max max extras just like how it was in ancient times where the romans used the same fricking tactics and assimilated most of the tribes they came across.
The wasteland is fricked. The idea that most people would be okay with a state like the legion at the cost of security isn't really that bad with the universe context here.

    Legion's pros and cons:

    pros:
    -has lots of people
-master in infiltration and guerilla warfare
-knows how to fight closer and personally; doesn't rely on guns
-has fearsome reputations that made other faction fear them, refrain them from attacking their merchant caravan
    -has doggos
-wins most of the time in off screened lore
    -lanius is cool and strong
    -lupus is cunning and awesome
-caesar's dialogue is interesting and his tough wise guy tone is enjoyable to listen to
-highly competent, always fulfill their promises and duties
-strong stance on purging the inhuman beasts such as mutants and ghouls. Their territory has none of them.

    cons:
-melee sucks for npc battle in FNV so legionnaire so are exclusively melee lost 90% of the times against enemies with firearms
-since they don't appreciate the power of science, their lives stays the same barbaric way without any improvement in military technology or civil technology. Not using science also preventing them from using cool toys like power armors and other high tech laser gun and plasma gun
-lose most of the time in in game performance
-Caesar is secretly dying to brain tumor. With his death, the legion falls apart.
-their attire is dumb. Just foot gears without pants.

    extra:
-/+ treat woman like cattle. A bit edgy, and extreme but it helps improve their human productions
-/+ each legionnaire were brainwashed so much they don't have independent freedom of thoughts (except for the higher ups and the caesar). This however is what preventing them from being morally corrupted, prevents them from running away in combat "most of the time".
-/+ -brainwashing by caesar's teaching, the legionary's refusal to use medicine resulting them having short lives after injured in battle. This however has some positive effect that prevents them from giving in to further morale corruption and bribery.

      >since they don't appreciate the power of science
I would put this as a double edged sword, the issues are apparent but there is a reason to it that makes sense as the idea is not to build you civilization off of technology that you don't know how to build or reproduce.

      >treat woman like cattle.
My biggest problem with this is the way they'll even use them as beasts of burden. Like, fine, if you're going to go hardcore traditionalist then at least make them do shit they're adequate for. Carrying heavy shit is not something women are good at.

    >Between the NCR, House, and an independent Vegas, I felt that the player had three “soft” grey choices.
    >There’s nothing really morally grey about Liberia’s Charles Taylor, but he’s a real guy who did astoundingly terrible things for the sake of maintaining power. In the context of F:NV, I don’t think Caesar and the Legion need to be thought of as “grey” like the player’s other options. I think they can be what they are, as they are, because the lie of their fiction is intended to provoke thoughts about truth, i.e. the nature of humans who rise to power in such circumstances. When we say “war never changes”, we’re talking about things like this.

Sawyer already said the legion is badly written

I legitimately think Sawyer just regrets writing the Legion as well as he did. Say what you want, but the ideas he presents are at the very least compelling. You don't have to agree with them, I certainly don't, but it really feels like Sawyer tried to get into the mindset of a Legion-like entity instead of just going straight up black and white with it. And the proof of how well it was done is in the fact that there are unironic legiongays.

Basically, I think he's just ashamed and fearing the twitter mob.

Keep in mind his main form of communication is tumblr, where the morons that ask him these questions don't even make an attempt to hide their desire to drag anyone who says anything that goes against their narrative through the dirt. Some indie dev writes a blog article criticizing PoE and when they ask Sawyer to respond to it they phrase it as "DESTROY THIS moron". Sawyer may be a gay but he knows well enough to not poke that hornet's nest.

Yeah, it's clear they were hamstringed by dev time but the clear idea is there, and they are a faction that makes sense as something that would develop within the post-war world. Really the largest mistake is us never actually seeing a civilian settlement and getting to see that perspective.
