I wish it was linear like doom 3 or even level based like classic doom with quick levels with a set amount of enemies. The arena thing is lazy to me, having respawning enemies that come out of nowhere isnt satisfying

    That's both 2016 and Eternal in a nutshell.
    The cinematic bullshit, platforming, "RPG mechanics" and FRICKING CUTSCENES EVERYWHERE dig them into even deeper hole.

    The total lack of MODDING TOOLS, in a game made by "iD" and published by Bethesda, is the final nail.

      2016 has more random enemies between the arbitrary battle arenas, and even the arenas themselves are not as rigidly fenced off as in Eternal.

    They added some segments in the blood swamp with super heavies with fog, but generally you are correct. Never played DLC2 though.

    The game is literally based on arenas. There are some non-arena encounters but they’re very brief and not satisfying. You literally can’t like everything in the game except for arenas because everything in the game, every system is built to support arena combat.

    Oh, and if you look at modern wads, a lot of them use the same or similar design, they try to limit your movement to one room by different tricks. Sometimes the exit is timed, sometimes it’s guarded by a spawned wall of Barons, sometimes you need to press a button guarded by a Cybrdemon. Turns out, arena design is… le good?

    2016 was better about having mission variety

    Eternal was just a fricking slog of the devs being too high on the success of 2016 to realize they were making it shittier and probably focused on making the multiplayer good first and design the single player to feed into the multiplayer, which is why Eternal's campaign is all about gay ass arena fights because it simulates the moronic multiplayer mode

      That was legit the best thing out of this game
      The speed at how I got bored and forgot about it is fricking incredible considering how much I loved it initially. I'm not sure myself if I regret spending money on it or not

          Blood Swamps has god tier level design and combat flow, the split path offers up two completely unique experiences as far as combat goes, the wolf one plays in a way no other encounter in the game does.
          The atmosphere is just great. Honestly its the best level in the game, the 2 big arena fights are really great too, the boss isn't particularly special but a pretty fun finish to a great level.

              Same, forgot to mention those, they're another part that makes traversing the level feel like a different experience to the main game. Honestly everything about the level is just impressive to me, it has so many memorable and unique combat encounters. It's god tier level design.
              I love how its the introduction of the spirit enemy as well, another thing that makes you think about combat differently. It's just such a great fricking level.

              I even love the final cutscene, that palate cleanser visually of that final area great, my one complaint would be that I wish we just got to run around in that place some instead of it being a cutscene, having that tower above you the entire level with the partially blue sky above it is real cool.

                The alien structure of Ingmore Sanctum looming ominously over the decaying castles is really damn cool, yeah. Looks like they took inspiration from Wayne Barlowe. More video games should do that!

          Worst, most piss easy boss in the whole game. I was able to beat it on my first try in my blind Nightmare playthrough (and at that time I blew ass at the game)

          I love Doom Hunter Based. Platforming is easy and it has absolutely killer aesthetic. Polished metal, orange beams and you assemble your own boss as you traverse it. The only negative is that there’s only one real big fight in it before the boss and it’s in the beginning.

    Yeah, even Doom3 is a better Doom game than 16/shiternal. Don't know where they got the idea that Doom was about being a wave-arena shooter with blocked off area that opens when you kill all the enemys. The original Doom(s) never were like this but somehow they made people believe this is back to the roots, while in reality they have strayed away from the originals farther than ever.
