      1 New Hint Available:

-Stairs: A structure designed to bridge a large vertical distance between lower and higher levels by dividing it into smaller vertical distances. This is achieved as a diagonal series of horizontal platforms called steps which enable passage to the other level by stepping from one to another step in turn. Steps are very typically rectangular. Stairs may be straight, round, or may consist of two or more straight pieces connected at angles.

Types of stairs include staircases (also called stairways) and escalators. Some alternatives to stairs are elevators (also called lifts), stairlifts, inclined moving walkways, ladders, and ramps. A stairwell is a vertical shaft or opening that contains a staircase. A flight (of stairs) is an inclined part of a staircase consisting of steps (and their lateral supports if supports are separate from steps).

Uncharted 2 actually starts it with the train, where railings and stuff you jump to are randomly painted yellow

UC1 half does it, half doesn't
There's sections where in the mess of ruins and dense foliage, you can't tell at all where the invisible climb on point is. But once you get the climbing section going, they have super obvious markings where they'll occasionally trip you up.
Which, is kind of thematic given the whole series anyway - finding the path to treasure then nearly having it slip away the moment you near it.

Perhaps more interesting to think about is that Assassins Creed 1 came out a week before Uncharted and it's climbing is still criticized as just "pressing up"

Glowing barrels is a video gamey indicator, yellow paint implies someone goes around painting everything. It's not even like the objects are yellow, it's specifically PAINTED yellow

Yellow paint goes out of the way to integrate something in universe that guides the player, icons are at least just a video game thing disconnected from the world. paint creates the problem of making you think some dude goes around painting everything in a ridiculous way

The mega irony is that this isn't even how climbing works. Only the world's very top elite climbers ever attempt a "leap" from one ledge to the next like this, and even then it's so risky (even in a competition setting) that it's practically never worth doing. You're putting an awful lot of faith in your probably already-sore fingers catching you as you grab on to that next ledge because you're not getting any support from your arms or legs on moment of impact.

My point is that this insanely stupid.

I permanently messed up my neck as a kid trying to copy how these characters climb. Even top level climbers don't climb like that, though I get that devs use jumps so they don't have to animate anything complex.

Totally, my point is just that they can. I've seen freeclimbers who can make a leap from one ledge to another, and if they'd tweaked the animation a little they could have portrayed that.
Instead they made this moronic mess.

I'm so glad people seem to finally agree that this shit is moronic, i remember when re4 was first shown i and a few others would raise our concern about how moronic and condencending this shit was, and would get a ton of replies like "it's not that big of a deal" and "who cares if it doesn't make sense, it's a video game"

It's actually not to bad. Physically based rendering has made everything too glossy, that and figuring out dynamic lighting better.

In RE4 original, you'd be able to pick apart barrels and boxes from how they were rendered.

    >having the yellow paint there is better than simply not having the yellow paint
    and
    >solving the same problem in a way that doesn't involve weird, immersion-breaking paint is generally better
Not being able to find something just because you overlooked it and didn't realize it was actually interactable is one of the worst and most annoying moments in video games. Yellow paint is the easiest, laziest, and worst way to solve the problem, but the game is still better off for having solved the problem.

The glorified loading screen is not the problem, a cliff you climb slowly is dumb but fits into the world just fine, the yellow paint does not and it takes you out of the game.
Is there some construction worker going around with a paint bukcet all over the place?
White colouring (not paint) is much better specifically because it looks natural and happens to cliffs anyway, and it used to be enough of an indicator in older games (and still would be)

See, this is how I know you know nothing about game development. Getting players to actually notice the thing you want them to notice is extremely hard unless you put some big, obvious indicator like yellow paint or a flashing objective marker. It's an especially big problem now because video game environments are extremely detailed and visually busy.

          >My objective is obviously ahead and it's the only way for me to go, but there's an obstacle in my path. They make the excuse that the grafix and clutter prevent them from using more subtle options, but no one's forcing them to do that. They could still use subtle options if they had strong art design and visual design principles to enable them to differentiate between background art and relevant features instead of just striving for muh realism and a muddy natural look over everything and outsourcing all their assets to India.

Movies are like this too. There's a visual language to things, a way to focus a person's attention where you want it. Yeah, organic guidance as a part of level design is a form of art in itself. Just sticking some random climbable ledges somewhere in a game world where you previously couldn’t climb ledges would be atrocious design if there weren’t visual cues to suggest climbing, especially considering how much clutter and details video game worlds have now, but yellow paint is such a dumb way to do it. Proper designers can guide you without needing to highlight stuff thst blatantly.

You can have Navi say "Hey, listen, climb up the fricking rocks"

Non-tards will notice that their minimap (which is another tard feature, honestly) continues going in that direction with different shades denoting different elevations.

Have a setting you can turn on or off that gives a faint glowing indicator on where they want to guide the player. If morons need handholding then give an option, not a forced requirement

Solution to what? When you approach a thing, a prompt tends to pop up that indicates interaction. This is how it's been for many years.

Are people even dumber now that they need an additional indicator?

        Anonymous

Most people are and have always been idiots, arguably people are becoming even dumber, but it's probably mostly just that they are trying to reach the widest audience possibly, instead of catering to just people who alrady have an interest. Nevermind alienating your faithful fanbase who doesn't need or want this condensending shit.
And things like this breeds stupidity anyway, not even giving people a chance to gifure things out and train their brain, just serving everything on a guided platter. That's also why zoomer are incompetent when it comes to computers, apps do everything for them so they don't need to learn, don't even need to learn how to use google properly (not that google is any good anymore with all the censoring and selective info it does now)

Environmental tells or if everything else fails, simple button prompts.
Like for the VIIR example, you could just have a bunch of birds or whatever sitting near the first ledge and since there's only one possible path there is really no reason to mark the other ledges. Or if that's not a solution just display a button prompt to get up that ledge from a few meters away, just make it transparent until you're close enough to grab onto it.

For this instance, either have the handholds just off color of the cliff background, or just leave them the same and have the player look around to find handholds. There's already a UI arrow below it indicating its climbable.

          Anonymous

Totally, my point is just that they can. I've seen freeclimbers who can make a leap from one ledge to another, and if they'd tweaked the animation a little they could have portrayed that.
Instead they made this moronic mess.

Dumb strawman aside, my point is that you shouldn't be limited to one way to do things. BOTW/TOTK show that if you let people figure out their own solution to a problem they'll enjoy it more than having to work out exactly what the developer's intent was.
Babbdi I already brought up earlier, but that's another example in that for a game about platforming it gives you a world you can frick around in to a very big extent and tools to complete it by a bunch of different routes. Within 5 minutes of starting the game I'd found a pickaxe that let me climb all the way up to the top of the map.

They're misconstruing the difference in attention of a playtesting session in an office vs a session from the comfort of someone's home on release, but whatever.

A dark lord offers you a choice:
    >ALL games (including old games) are changed so that every interactable item is given the yellow paint treatment
    >ALL games (including old games) are changed so yellow paint indicators aren't used, BUT every game has a GoW: Ragnarok style running commentary from characters/the protagonist explaining any puzzle you encounter (it cannot be muted or removed)
You have to pick one and you cannot have a nice day.

Paint in a heartbeat unless I can turn off dialogue audio in the settings. If I had to listen to some frickers blabbing over this I'd never play games again.

What if the dark lord made it so that the character explaining what to do (I guess the boss fight strategy in this case) sung their advice along to the song

Then I'll just kill the dark lord

You can't kill the dark lord, even if you fight him you cannot win
He won't kill you, but as punishment he WILL make it so all games have BOTH yellow paint and running commentary. And all running commentary is a bad copy of the original VA by that guy who does the meme videos.

the whole reason it's yellow paint is supposedly because it's the color that subconsciously grabs attention first hence why it's used on warning signs

or because it's used on warning signs who knows

The difference is also that it makes thematically sense, it's a city first of all and the buildings are also fully painted, it's not splotches of paint in bumfrick nowhere, it's just a futuristic city and you can take the leap of imagination easily that a society has progressed towards such an aesthetic. In re4 and final fnatasy it clashes extremely and it doesn't make any sense for there to be someone going around in a village or wilderness putting paint everywhere

I assume you realise this, but people have made arguments like this before thinking it's some gotcha

        Anonymous

It wasn't an aesthetic, the city itself was pure bland white+windows. The red/yellow objects was your "Runner's sense" that gave you ideas about what you can use as platforms/climb/jump over/etc. It was visualised split second instinct and that's why it worked.

        > arguments
I'm not arguing with anyone to provide any arguments, I literally just gave an example of a game where it was done as it should...
And yes, it wasn't "aesthetics", all these colors are just the runner’s imagination.
