Explain to me the appeal

I seriously don't get it
Everyone and their mom plays this franchise
But everytime I see someone play the game it goes something like this
>go around
>punch people/steal car
>kill people
>police ensues
>kill police

Rinse and repeat. Like, what the frick? How is this engaging or fun? More importantly, it's been the same fricking shit from the early 2000s. Why do people suddenly feel the urge to buy the sixth chapter, when it's the exact same thing as before?

I don't get it. Please enlighten me. I can't be the only one who's baffled by this series. Did Rockstar brainwash the entire world's population into liking this shallow crime simulator?

Difference is any 2D platformer game lives and dies by its level design, where specific encounters and challenges must be completed.
GTA isn't like that. If you choose to engage with the combat and crime system it's because doing anything else (walking around) is fundamentally boring. And the system itself is shallow once you start shooting the police. it gets progressively more difficult but it's all pointless. There's no handcrafted challenge, no interesting variations. Nothing.

      >muh reductionism
You can describe every single game like that, non-criticism

Then explain the appeal of GTA in a way that doesn't sound reductionist.
And leave story out of it because the series didn't get popular for it.
It got popular because normies play it and most of them just dick around in the open world

There is, in the story which you're intentionally avoiding,

          >There is, in the story which you're intentionally avoiding,
But the story mode isn't the reason GTA is so ludicrously successful.

nonsense, the story and the soundtrack are the most fondly remembered aspects of the series, it may not be what lured people to play, but it's what made them stick with it.

              Anonymous

              Not for normies.
GTA is the one console game franchise that literally EVERYONE plays, either by buying it or by playing at their friend's house.
Yes I've never seen or heard normies interact or engage with the stories. it's always about the police "sandbox" stuff.
When my normies friends watched the new trailer, they didn't ponder shit about the story or characters. They just looked at the pretty graphics and smiled at the wacky things. And then said
              >I can't wait for 2025!

If their fondest memories of GTA had been the story, it sure didn't seem like it. In fact most normies who will say GTA is their favourite game, or the only game they like to play, will have trouble remembering the names of the characters
I only hear people talking about the story and characters of GTA here on Ganker

                >BUT DUH NORMIES
So let's just cut it off here and say you're right. Everyone is a mindless drone who likes to kill cops and steal in different settings.

      >But you can frick around in the open world too if you want which is fun.
But that's exactly what 90% of the consumer base for the series does.
      >hey bro can I play GTA on your playstation?
and then he proceeds to just dick around the open world shooting cops
How can someone be hyped for doing that AGAIN?

Can you conceptualize that people like different things that you might not be personally enjoying? If you can't then you probably have some kind of autism.
To answer your question, it appeals to people that like that kind of shit, it's that simple.

      >Can you conceptualize that people like different things that you might not be personally enjoying
I'm asking about GTA specifically. I don't like CoD but I don't need to make a thread to ask people why they like it. It's pretty obvious to me why.
Or are you too autistic to understand why i'd make this thread?

Also the issue isn't the fact that people "like it", I get that. What I don't get is why it's so goddamn successful and everyone plays it. To me it doesn't seem engaging, varied, deep or fun enough to warrant all the hype each entry gets.

Yeah, because that's what he likes to do with it personally. If you're really curious about "the appeal," then YOU play it YOURSELF and make up your own mind. Stop letting other people make your decisions for you.

Uhh it was kind of impressive in the early 00s to be able to steal and drive any vehicle, I don't know what people see in it 20 years later. Sleeping dogs is the only game of this style I ever completed because the story was actually interesting and the city was unique.

Did the leaks say it will be a co-op game? Huge missed opportunity if it isn’t. Red dead 2 easily could’ve had a co-op too. At least a sand box co-op when John had written voice lines for everything. Such a lazy decision to force you into their online map that’s way less populated and where you can’t even rob people like in offline. Loved doing poker stick ups and it would be even more fun with a friend.

I mean yeah thats a positive, I fricking hate those freemason cucks.
also the loop became, go around (online), pour gas (petrol) on a player/s car, light it on fire, repeat. its fun shock value, and most everyone else is just hacking thinking they're hot shit.

Sandboxes are fun. It's fun to mess around in a world that reacts to your actions. It really is no more complicated than that. I mean, if you don't get it, then it's just not your thing. I can't stand capeshit movies, for example, but I don't get mad about it. They're going to exist with or without being into them. Just play what you do enjoy, you don't need anyone's permission anon.

What I like about it is that there is no "wrong" way to play GTA. If you want to be autistic and never break any law, and obey traffic, go ahead. Want to just do the vehicle races? Sure, and it's even better than some dedicated racers. Want to blow half the city up in what can only be described as an act of genocide? Yeah, why not? And that's not even delving into the various side missions and side jobs, and what have you.

GTA 3 was groundbreaking at its time. VC and San Andreas were further refinements with still little competition.
IV was already boring and open worlds were becoming common, by GTA 5 I guess it's just brand recognition because the formula is stale as shit with every other game being the same damn thing they're selling.

I was just thinking of San Andreas and the absolute obscene amount of side content/ side missions it had. Just from memory here...
    >House burglary missions
    >Export/ import vehicles
    >Stadium stunts
    >Stadium races
    >Driving/ flying/ boating school
    >Big rig 18 wheeler deliveries
    >Pimping missions
    >Police/ firefighter/ taxi side activity
    >(A surprisingly fun) dance mini game in any of the night clubs
And probably a shit ton I'm forgetting right now. And remember, the vast majority of that is optional side content. Like who doesn't want that kind of variety from a game? San Andreas was so fricking good, that it's not even fair. How can any other game compete with that?

For me it's the exploration. Rockstar makes very large, very good looking and very detailed open worlds. I enjoy exploring the world at my leisure, seeing the sights and finding all the stuff they've put in the game. Once every area has been explored and the main story is finished it loses appeal and I drop it.
