Because I only have nostalgia for backing her into a corner and jerking off to her zoomed in.
The gameplay has always been boring turbojank

Chronicles is a filler game, but this level at least attempted something new and interesting. Should've made the whole game like this.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Black Isle and verner von croy levels. And if it weren’t for chronicles we wouldn’t have the level editor. I’ve played some absolutely amazing custom levels

This filtered young me. Not because it was hard but fuck dude, this shit looked creepy as fuck.

You remind me how I wish I had played Shadow Man when I was a kid. Tomb Raider already spooked me at points, but I'd imagine the game about hell and serial killers would have fucked my head.

I played all the classic TRs except chronicles. I heard that's when it shit the bed. Can you confirm/deny?

I put off playing chronicles for a long time because of believing the same thing people said. It’s really not bad at all. I enjoyed it a lot, the levels are very fun and experimental. I love the fact the mini stories don’t really take themselves too seriously as well. In fact just thinking about it makes me want to replay it.

Not really. It feels more like a collection of big DLC than a full game and at times the levels seem unfinished but overall it's nothing offensively bad. I imagine that it was received poorly at the time because it feels like a quick cash grab and came out in november 2000 still using the same gameplay from 1996 and felt incredibly dated compared to what was coming out at the time and honestly in retrospect it does seem unacceptable to release that game at that time.

with reservations I would recommend a zoomer play classic re or silenthill, I would never recommend tombraider.

Because most of them are just retarded in terms of difficulty that is made by the tank controls
I played TR3 as a kid and beat it with a guide but fuck me are they annoying to play.

It works with RE or SE when enemies aren't ranged attacking or speedy. In TR with boulders, etc? Not so much

It's not the tank controls, they're fine considering the camera is mostly behind you, the grid system ensures conistency too and never requires from you more than the control scheme can handle. It's the constant barrage of insta-death traps that you have no way of anticipating, and in the OG TR1 & TR3 you had limited saves you had to ration. Utter fucking insanity.

The traps in all of the games have some degree of foreshadowing. If you died to a trap it is literally your fault.

          >Caves of Kaliya
          >well done on running forward to avoid the one boulder that mysteriously dropped out from a celling you literally couldn't fucking see
          >but wait! there's more rumbling! from what direction? left? right? well fuck you because it's too dark to see, it's left mother fucker, next time, turn right to avoid the first boulder

            Yep your fault
Let me guess you died to the quicksand jump puzzle in 3 too 🙂

III was a major downgrade lol

I wouldn't say downgrade. It just expected you to have played TR1 and TR2 recently as many of the traps were basically combined from the first two games.
Playing TR1 and TR2 after TR3 was like walking a mile after training to complete a 50 mile race

I didn't know they put the fucking map in my inventory. Had to do trial and error for that whole bitxh.

Altho the game did make up for it by allowing me to hunt and kill ooga boogas

Yes and no, you can generally tell when shit's about to get toasty by observing the environment but you can't predict that there will be 3 boulders followed by crumbling and you have to turn right at the end of the corridor because left is a death trap. You need to die a few times and memorize the sequence. The controls are too stiff and delayed to instinctively react to what's happening too, the only way is to know in advance what to do so you can properly time your inputs.

For a while, I thought Chronicles was the black sheep of the classic Croft era (at least until I played Angel of Darkness, and that game fucking pissed me off, but at least that Lara was the hottest Lara), but it turned out to be a pretty decent game for what it's worth, despite having tank controls being much worse this time around. I appreciate the devs for experimenting, however. I cannot say the same for whatever Squeenix was doing with that shitty Uncharted/Hunger Games-like survival era.

I gave them a try and was suprised at how much better they felt compared to what i was expecting. The platforming held up better than i expected. The camera kind of sucks and everything being so much slower than modern games was also annoying so I didn't finish them but it was enough to wish they would stop putting out these modern garbage titles and go back to the sensible tomb raiding, sly talking, dinosaur killing laura

3 was about equal to 2 but my biggest complaint is that shit was so fucking dark all the time. I couldn't see shit and had to crank the brightness.

Also I didn't know you could kill the skellies, so the catacombs felt like dark souls -- just endless running with a train of mobs behind me. Was actually pretty fun in hindsight

IIRC, 3 switched from sprites to models which didn't have good lighting hence all the dark areas

The traps in all of the games have some degree of foreshadowing. If you died to a trap it is literally your fault.

Protip to enjoying tomb raider: play using RetroArch and just use the rewind button every time you die. Especially with T3 and T4
