Since I've been working in the same country for the past decade, and especially the past 3 years, I can 100% confirm, that they absolutely **have** been affected by all the ridiculous inflation over here, unless all the devs have been importing their daily necessities with help of mafia and the black markets. For frick's sake, just the price of many common groceries alone has at least doubled (or more) in most, not to mention the energy fiasco spiking up bills, rent and housing prices by a similar (if not bigger) amount.
The Steam homosexual in the OP's pic sounds like someone who doesn't know what they're talking about, because eastern Czechia has had "Western" (if not worse) prices, yet "3rd world wages" for at least a couple decades now.

Once you have a lot of stuff built, you're basically doing pic related, and the specifics of how you do it have a lot of variety based on the player count of the server, starting terrain, nearby resource patches, etc.

Yeah, this is the part that gets me. I don't really care either way, it's still worth $35 and most of the outrage is driven by trannies. I had no problem with the no discount policy, but this is a little strange.

The cost for additional copies of a game is a flat percentage, inflation doesn't really matter, they aren't losing money by continuing to produce copies. The game is already developed and made a lot in revenue, so if the profits of a 100 million dollar grossing game aren't enough to deal with inflation, then it's time to make another game.

This calculation doesn't take a few things into account. Namely, sales.
Don't have concrete data, but pretty sure the majority of sales happens
    1) on release
    2) during sales
Further, next to the money valve takes, there is also such a thing as "taxes", and most of us europoor countries unfortunately suffer from progressive taxes. Germany is a hardcore example where minimum wage effectively means that some 50-60% of your money goes to the government and compulsary social security.
Employees, too, are very expensive. Usually you have to pay twice of what they cost, and then they ought to make profits.
This guy has zero knowledge of how economics works, on a macro or micro level, and is moronic.
On that note, the devs using inflation as excuse for being greedy fricks doesn't make anything better. Two important things to find out would be how much they paid a year ago compared to now to their employees and whether they work remotely or on-prem, and in that case find out their rent.
Could go more in-depth but pretty sure nobody here cares about economics beyond "buy high sell low" like in Anno.

Lowest recorded price according to SteamDB is 20 bucks. Someone in another thread also mentioned it used to cost even less a few years ago.
Took me five min to find their balance sheet
        https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/09201188/filing-history
It's registered in the UK and they had about 5,3 mil in cash reserves in Sept. 2021.
Considering they make games and don't have huge earnings in-between games and likely quite substantial running costs to cover all their fixed costs (employees and rents), it's still greedy to increase their prices, but it's so far away from the number this guy came up with.
Ultimately, it's a pure price vs. utility calculation, and if price elasticity is high enough for games there's little reason not to use it.

You mean like how they release the remastered definitive remake edition of games instead of creating new games?

That was the Factorio Devs mistake, should have made some minor changes call it the definitive version of the game $35 for new players give to existing owners for free and it would have been no big deal.

in the 90s you got charged more for games simply because they were hot/popular. mortal kombat, street fighter, etc. on snes was 69.99 and you could get less popular games for 39.99 or 49.99

This post is completely useless for one simple reason:
Factorio never had sales, it's a policy enforced by the devs because, as they said themselves, they consider the base price "fair" and thus defeat the purpose of putting the game on sales, ever.

Cool, so it wasn't sales but just general increases.
Not even the first increase since release. WTF are you guys going on about?
Maybe they tried to start an outrage to increase sales because now tons of normies will hear about Factorio.

The game is not a service, if they want to make money, create new content.
Imagine game devs increasing prices of games released in the 90s because "think of the poor employees!" instead of just releasing new paid content.

According to Steam you only acquire the license to the game. But that is probably not what you meant.
        >if they want to make money, create new content
Think in business terms. You sell ice cream. One portion is 1$. At some point you realise that you can also sell one portion for 2$ and only lose 10% of your customers. With 100 customers that is 100$ vs 180$, which one would you take?
That is what they are trying.
One info I don't have is price change policy. If they can just try it and set it back down after a while there is not much to lose.

is the actual amount of money they made off the game? Dude deserve rich but not that much.

There's a lot of corporations that tried to do what Valve did, it's just that they can't really hire people for shit to manage such a large system. Launchers like uPlay and Origin are more for DRM than anything. All the corporations like Microsoft and Google are just waiting like vultures for Gabe to step down so that they can try buying Valve directly from whomever will replace him for like a hundred billion dollars or something.

The game is not a service, if they want to make money, create new content.

It's not that bad but it's odd that they have such autistic fanbases most of the time. I stumbled upon a surprisingly large idle game community called Kitten Clicker where it takes whole days and weeks to do anything worthwhile.

If you care about software quality, long-tail sales are a way better model than the current AAA Hollywood blockbuster model where you spend millions on advertising hoping for that one big perfectly-timed and hyped opening weekend.

    >but if Factorio gets away with raising its price, other companies will follow suit!
cool but the deal is you have to make your software as high quality as Factorio

The Factorio way is sanity compared to the most popular vidya pricing schemes, which are banking on a horde of fickle impulsive children with little taste or discernment who consume a lot of advertising.

AAA sucks but indie is not automatically any better. I've played lots of indies and I can say that it's far from a good place even if it's somewhat better than AAA.
The dev's reasoning sounds like a flimsy attempt to squeeze a little more money out of a game that has already generated a lot of money, but who knows if it's out of greed or if he really is autistic about "fairness", but either case does not bode well. If it's the latter it's likely that his hyper-focus on such trivial shit that no other developer cared about gets in the way of development and it could be that development is so slow because he personally makes sure everything is as he wants it to be, like all the optimizations he's been doing over the years despite the game not being that intensive in the first place.

No, I wish this game were good, but it just isn't.
Even now, I still will randomly lose all my character when I start up the game in SINGLEPLAYER, which then involves completely redoing my hotbars, actually finding my old body sitting around invisible somewhere, and then finally playing the game.
The research systems are all over the place and while there is plenty of progression, none of it is organized in a satisfying way.
The game map is constantly being reworked, but is still extremely rough in many areas. Despite being hand-made by the devs, there are literal inescapable holes in the world and blank paint tool spots left in with nothing there.
This is all ignoring the tedious nature of 3D first person building everything one at a time in a game where the scale calls for hundreds of machines in a single process.
Nothing really feels good in Satisfactory. I played up to the last space elevator tier (one research station of four), and just got too fed up.

The little tantrum will make more future customers aware that they're getting less value for their investment. No, inflation isn't doing this. You have to take the entire market into account for that and 7 year old products have not increased in price across the entire market unless you count resellers which are irrelevant in this case

Because you don't profit off of it you bootlicking homosexual.

If you don't think letting creators charge whatever they want for their products could ever possibly benefit consumers, you need to log off and read an Econ 101 book. The reason big companies started aggressively pursuing all that pre-order bonus deluxe mega $$$ editions and season passes and micro transactions and 60+10+20+10 bullshit pricing schemes and all their psychological tricks is because the videogame market is stupidly artificial because their customers are a bunch of IGNORANT CHILDREN who believe dogmatic shit about much a game "should" cost. It's a bunch of cult belief nonsense and customers REEEEE at the idea of prices fluctuating (you know, like ANYTHING ELSE) but will somehow do mental gymnastics to justify why the mega deluxe $100 version is "worth it" because you "get stuff", or at least they will fall for all the nasty psychological tricks the companies employ.

The Factorio way is the right way. That's how a healthy market should function. "I made thing. Here is price. Price is up to me. Buy or no buy." If all you can see is "price go up = BAD ENEMY" you are either low IQ or small brained, there's simply no way around it. There's nothing to even "defend" here! Except things like deluxe editions are an optional price hike meanwhile the other is a forced price hike. Let me put it this way, which is better
                base: $60, deluxe: $80
                or
                base: $70

                >these games won't drop in price by the way
this is a false conditional tho
everything is subjected to change if it doesn't sell.
and that's a main argument for our side, if you think it's worth 70 bucks then price it as such, if the market doesn't buy it at that price point then you have to lower it, it's that simple.
if you think the current price point is too low, increase it, see how to market feels about it, if they continue to buy it then it's worth the new price point.
i don't mind games being 70 bucks, i mind the idea that every triple a game thinks they're worth 70 bucks, which comes from the mentality that triple a games are worth X amount and indie games are worth Y amount, which has nothing to do with this conversation

A lot of games absolutely don't sell at the 70 dollar price tag, not even at 60, that's why it's becoming more and more common for certain triple a games to release and go on sale for almost half price 2 weeks later

i haven't bought an AAA game since fallout 4 moron. i wouldn't have a problem if the factorio devs decided to make something new like a sequel and charged 60 dollars for it. the problem is that they are raising the price for a game that is nearly a decade old, while adding nothing extraordinary or game-changing to the game. they should've done what the risk of rain devs did.

He's earned enough fricking money. 100 million dollars for a shitty indie game is absolutely phenomenally well done and is a fine achievement and is more than enough to earn for a small indie game. He also stated the accusations against Uncle Bob were irrelevant, and that he trusted those reading the blog post “to have the ability to create their own opinions instead of blindly following whatever says the person they like.”

When the drama spilled on Twitter and the Steam Forums, calls to blacklist and not buy Factorio fell on deaf ears. If anything, it seemed to encourage more people to play the game, as when reported the game gained over 1,000 new positive reviews, and became the 63rd most played game on Steam.

The game’s official Twitter account even replied to one of the Twitter users who drew attention to the controversy; stating “I’m really happy for the free ads we are getting. Thank you for that.”

a product is worth as much as you're willing to pay for it, they increased it knowing people would still buy it at the 35 price point, which means it's worth 35 bucks
don't like it? pirate it, or don't buy it, maybe they'll decrease it again

the devs stirred up the drama by raising the price of their game despite it's age, usually it works in reverse. don't act surprised people are reacting poorly to this, people didn't react great to new games being priced at 70 I don't see why that reaction would change here

They maybe invited it, but I think the people who are complaining are dishonest.
Factorio always had a no sale practice, the devs are infamous for it, they knew the price-point for ages and it only kept on increasing over the years. The people who are complaining about it were never going to buy the game if there was no price increase.

                >doesn't deny he's a israelite
yes lets all lay down and take the price increases like good little piggies. If you see someone being greedy turn the other way and accept it

Do you really want me to say "No, I'm not", and if so will you believe me?

The little tantrum will make more future customers aware that they're getting less value for their investment. No, inflation isn't doing this. You have to take the entire market into account for that and 7 year old products have not increased in price across the entire market unless you count resellers which are irrelevant in this case

I think the price point itself already tells the whole story, which is my point. Shitting up the steam forums won't do any change, not buying will, and if people see the price and consider it to be worth the price-point they'll buy it, which in turn justifies the price-point which makes this entire fake drama pointless.
With that said, if the inflation story is fake and gay then it is sussy by the devs, I'd prefer an honest statement about them thinking it's worth the 35 dollar price tag

Doing that undoubtedly "exposed" a bunch of people that would otherwise had remained blissfully ignorant. Idiots like this seem to think "it's okay that I'm retweeting and signal-boosting as long as it's got my own text underneath saying how bad it is."
