ah, scratch that; he spells it out. thanks. I'd really love to see more of the cult's effects on the world at large, but I still think 2 is where the series peaked; the mystery surrounding Meadow Hill was really interesting.

It's often the case for the 2nd game in a series to be the peak. You can take mechanics to their limits, have a nice, self-contained side story and have a little fun.

Lisa is the mandatory love interest. Of course, her completely shrugging off being possessed by Alu and nearly murdering John likely means she's used to this sort of shit, so maybe she's someone that's in the same circles as Father Garcia?

Amy was an excellent obsession for John, and she was handled pretty well throughout the story.
Considering that the second death is -mostly- done willingly though, I can't help but think that Amy the victim exists only on John's mind as his "I could've saved her", whereas the real Amy probably knew what she was getting into somewhat

        Anonymous

I imagine that Amy probably knew that something would happen, but I don't think she was expecting having her mind, body, and soul utterly hijacked in such a manner. We already know that Gary lies fairly liberally regarding what demons are actually like in the setting or what awaits his faithful.

It's most likely a demon pretending to be God. I seriously doubt He'd let Amy's fall "upon thine head". He'd probably encourage him to keep going and finish the job. He'd ESPECIALLY not just help him get away and leave the demon unexorcized.

He basically gives John a number of extra lives so he doesn't instantly eat shit against the Unholy Trinity. It's not infinite though, so John will still die if he takes too much damage in quick succession.

Then it replays the events of 1 where you revel in your failure with Amy and Michael holding you

Then it replays the events of 1 where you revel in your failure with Amy and Michael holding you

Or if you dont do the stages and just drive home at the start.
It's debatably metaphoric, but in that ending the profane sabbath happens, cultists raze the neighborhood and john reveals he was keeping Amy in the locked room. Amy drags him into her facehole, John wakes up in the ruins of Amy's house, and after crying his way through the rooms Amy and Michael hold him as they perform an unknown ritual. Malphas' hand swallows John and the house as a hole, leaving a clearing in the forest as John is hinted to become the vessel for the antichrist

Basically John fricks up, either by not exorcising Amy at the end of the true end or fricking up and letting Lisa die, which reveals that the locked door he refuses to enter had Amy in it all along - the Profane Sabbath is completed and John has his soul claimed by the UNSPEAKABLE, ensuring that the world is doomed.

I don't understand why she would be in there the whole time at all. Like, I understand why he would "hold" her there to figure out what's wrong in order to save her but it doesn't make a whole lot of sense why Gary wouldn't come for her. Like surely they have the means to break into his house but perhaps the crucifixes block them from sensing her.

And if we just accept she's in there the whole time as revealed by the Bad End, then it makes the Good End seem altogether weird as she manages to leave the room to help John at the final moment. I'm not exactly complaining but it does kinda taint the story to have that not be clear. Just like it's not clear how Amy regains her sanity just long enough to allow John to bring her (and him) some peace.

I kinda don't like the fact God is actually around. The problem or even beneficial thing is that God is hands off most time and the fact he intervened actually ruins things by raising questions why he allows this unholy shit to happen at all. Like is he just playing some game to see if the Vatican is up to dealing with the most horrible shit imaginable?

It's John's own choice on choosing the hardest path, he literally traversed through hell to right his wrongs. all he needed to do is be like a bad ass like Father Garcia and just shotgun cultists and demonic beings.

Its the entire point of the Faith series that God isn't helping you, you could take the easy route and worship evil shit and sacrifice people to become a demon, or walk the path of hardship and fight said demons.

I kinda feel like she wasn't actually in there physically. That whole room was a manifestation of John's failure, she probably appeared there to torment him further. As for God not showing up, that's actually a very important part of theology. Why doesn't God show up to fix our stuff? The main reason, and it's very very simplified here, is due to free will. We chose to commit the original sin, we're choosing to continue living outside of God's will/plan for us. It can be argued that the saints that ascended to Heaven during their life, or the numerous times God interacted with people in the Bible, returned to God or were part of His plan and thus were aided directly.

It's pretty clear that Amy only regains her sanity because the UNSPEAKABLE chose to frick off and take its ball after Gary failed. As for why God exists - we already have Outer Gods existing in the exact same setting due to DUSK and they're supposedly inferior to pure Demons- more than that, the fact that God can only give John limited protection against the Unholy Trinity is probably a good indicator that His power isn't absolute here.

I think it's just God's usual habit of "helping those who help themselves" and not appearing for every problem. He only arrives and gives John what he needs to beat Gary

This. The entire game can be seen as an ordeal that God sends John to restore and reinforce his faith. He only sends as much power as John needs. And if worst comes to worst, he can just send His host of angels to contain the threat and lament the loss of John

              >It's pretty clear that Amy only regains her sanity because the UNSPEAKABLE chose to frick off
              I don't think that's clear at all.

I don't feel like anything really connects Amy from Faith 1 to Faith 3 aside from the fact John fricked up her ability to be a part of the Unholy Trinity. It really just feels like a bit of shitty writing like John's shaky connection to Lisa.

Like Amy is still afflicted by the Second Death, she does frick up Gary, you will get the Bad End if you do not hold up the crucifix fast enough when she tells you to. There's really no reason to believe she gets her free will back, she should be under Gary's control but isn't because she eats him.

That's why a lot of the story feels rather shit. There should have been explicit clues that Amy was actually in that room the whole time and that John actually rescued her from Faith 1 and has been actively trying to reform her, thus giving her some kind of incentive to break out and help him because she develops a sense of sympathy from John not giving up on her despite the fact her face is a fricking portal to hell. I feel like Gary performs the words to the ritual of the Second Death when Amy shows up, which threatens to turn her back into something demonic so she tells John to kill her before that fully takes grip. But that wasn't setup at all.

I assumed that John was doing the same thing to her that Garcia was doing to Michael. I think it's also pretty clear that saving Amy is one of John's big motivations.

no it's not, it's trying to present itself as something higher while engaging with something lower.
why try to trick the player with reports of John being a murderer, John going to a clinic, Amy appearing in multiple areas where she can't, constant doubts cast on John's sanity and the reality of any of the events, when it's just "a callback to the Exorcist." if that's all it is, then it is quite the pretentious callback.
i'm not offending the aesthetic you ass, i'm saying the game is something more not something less and if it really is something less, it's a deceptive waste of time. i like that Christianity and priests in this game are not presented as evil and i like that Christianity here is not portrayed as the root of all evil. it's comfy to have priests fighting demons as the cover to the story. but the game is trying to present itself as more under the hood and all i want is for it to be so.

John did go to the psych ward and did have doubts placed on his sanity, but that's more to serve his crisis of faith and his guilt complex over what happened to Allred and his family. Having it just be his delusions would completely ruin the point of the story.

i considered what you said by the way and went to check if John is ever said to be released and there's note that says he was a year before Chapter 3 starts.
either John went to a clinic after visiting Amy and began to lose faith there, only to recover it over the real course of the game, which is a display of both reality and his own dreams, or it's all just in his head and he's trying to cope in a jail cell or a psychology ward somewhere

The Second Death doesn't grant Gary any control over Amy - it only opens a portal to Hell and makes her a worthy Vessel to become the Unholy Trinity and usher the UNSPEAKABLE through. Ultimately, everything Amy does is still at the behest of the UNSPEAKABLE, which is why Gary spends his final moments trying to plead with her despite fricking everything up.

I reckon the insane story is more of a red herring, the perspective of how someone that doesn't believe in demons sees John's deteriorating state. Considering you get most hospital notes on the cultist endings, there's a chance Gary's got people at the hospital
        Gotta source your newborns somehow

There are other parts of the story that indicate John is not an actual priest (like the notes in ch. 1), Karen leaving him and Lisa appearing as the sudden love interest that needs to be saved to fulfil his heroic narrative.

I finally finished the game and holy shit it was great. BY FAR better than the first two across all accounts. Though some might prefer the subdued aspect of the very first Faith, the variety of areas, fights, and secret demons you can find is just fantastic.

It almost makes me wish we had a proper high budget exorcism game that follows the same principles of Faith.

      Anonymous

      >high budget exorcism game
Call of Cthulhu by Cyanide should be high enough budget. The Satanic horror of Faith is just about as blatantly evil as the Eldritch horror of Cthulhu and you really get the feeling that the evil has saturated every bit of the town.

The thing about these games is that you really actually feel bad for the protagonist and how they have to deal with this shit. It's really the story of the unwilling hero. I wouldn't say Cthulhu was a great game but it really sold that sense of "wow, evil having the upper hand is real fricking shitty"

I'm gonna be honest, I thought I would enjoy the game since the whole gist around it (focus on religion and demon cults) seems very intriguing and I love exploration games, but I was severly let-down and refunded the game. It was painfuly fricking boring and unfun to play the game itself, the demons being arcadelike bossfights killed it for me. I wish it was a detective style game instead.
I know I should've played the demo, but in my mind playing demos is like spoiling yourself the full game, so I avoid that.

It's a horror adventure game and combat is sort of like a top-down multidirectional shooter. While looking around for clues and secrets, you may be attacked by demons which must be warded off or exorcised by pointing your cross at them. Since you die in one hit, avoid getting cornered and know whether it's better to run to the next screen or fight back.
Of course this isn't much until you get to bossfights, which are bullet hell lite especially come the 3rd game.

I don't get why Airdorf included the demo of Chapter 2 as an unlockable chapter option, but then calls it a prologue. You can tell it's a rough version of chapter 2, and it overall feels disconnected from the rest.

In my opinion, in would have been better to add it to the extra menu and still have it unlock after beating C2.

Remember that demons are essentially fallen angels, created by the Almighty himself. Eldritch horrors would be creatures from the primordial chaos, lower in hierarchy than angels, even the fallen ones. Fallen angels are still made from the same substance as regular substance, even if they're weakened by pain and sin
Or at least that was the case in Paradise Lost. I really need to read up what's the Catholic Church stance on the topic

Hell, one of the early trailers for Chapter 2 IIRC outright used a quote from the Dunwich Horror to describe it.

      Anonymous

She's one of the original satanists who infiltrated the church as a nun. She was presumably responsible for disappearing many church parishioners and orphans, likely sacrificing them to the UNSPEAKABLE.
At one point, she was given the "second death" and became a portal to hell, which presumably let her fake her death.
The cult sacrificed many infants to hell through her and received a human-looking demon baby back that would become Gary, making her Gary's 'mother'.
Miriam later returned to the church to finish off the last few orphans, and was locked there when the church's priest discovered she was alive and went to confront her.

Can confirm in Chapter 3 that there is a hidden ending if you just get in your car and drive home when you arrive on all three days.
      >No my problem, just gonna go home

      The second best ending, yeah

      [...]

Demons are real, but so are the psych ward notes which detail what happened after the failed exorcism.

      >John suffers a crisis of faith when confronting Amy alone that he takes the Devil's deal to escape with his life in exchange for having his fate tied to Amy
      >John and Amy are rescued by law enforcement and sent to the psych ward
