Fallout

Just finished my first play though of New Vegas, it's quite janky but I enjoyed the roleplaying and worldbuilding. Aside from all the shitposting, should I play Fallout 3 too? I heard it has better exploration and atmosphere.

if you can tolerate NV's shit gameplay in 2024 you'll probably enjoy 3 well enough.

i remember evil playthroughs in this being pretty fun

fallout 3 leans a lot harder into exploration rather than questing. if thats what you like about fallout you may actually prefer it. its a lot jankyer though

Fallout 4 is good too. Frick the haters I am genuinely having fun with it.

Also the female protag is fun to play as.

oh yeah, play FO3; it's breddy gud

Yeah and even though 4 is janky too at times it does improve the shooting a lot. 3/NV felt stiff but 4 feels more fluid. Best way I can explain it...

as much flak as it gets, it really was ahead of it's time.. with some texture updates, and a few quality of life mods, it's a modern game that's 10 years old.

New Vegas is more roleplay and worldbuilding focused. 3 is more exploration and gameplay focused. There’s worldbuilding there too, but it’s nothing like the New Vegas faction stuff. As far as actually exploring a wasteland, Fallout 3 has New Vegas beat.

Atmosphere? Arguable, it depends on what kind of Fallout you're looking for. The atmosphere in 3 is more like an extended version of a vault in New Vegas, if you know what I'm trying to say. Lonely, desolate, kinda creepy, but that's all you're going to get from start to finish.
Exploration? No way, it's the same train tunnel/bombed out office/DC street filled with ghouls and super mutants the entire game. Everything blends together, you won't want to explore anything after your fifth identical dungeon.

Most of the downtown DC area is actually very unique and well designed. Idk who put in the time and effort of building the worldspaces, but they did a very good job.

Definitely shows that you don't even care about open world but linear games with choices, also back to réddit

Try it, it really isn't the same kind of game. You won't be roleplaying or enjoying the worldbuilding in this one, mostly just looting, roaming about and shooting.

Yeah. I'm a huge NVgay but Fallout 3 can be fun at times, even though it's awful as an RPG. Exploration can be fun sometimes and being a comically evil moron for no reason is pretty entertaining.

Fallout 3 is going to feel like a downgrade in a lot of areas, especially the writing, but for the most part it's very similar in terms of gameplay. If anything, I'd say it's better as an open world game. Just not as an RPG.

I still enjoy playing the game every now and then, even as a massive New Vegas-gay.

If you must, install and play Tale of Two Wastelands
It merges 3 and NV and backports NV's changes, like iron sights, VATS changes, perks and speech checks being a flat number than a percentage chance

      Anonymous

I dislike how in NV the speech skills are basically just "I win, give me the best ending" buttons. I do like how the actual dialogue choices change based on your level, but they should have hidden the fact that it was a skillcheck option and just let the player figure it out on their own.
Basically what I'm saying is that they should have made the options look like normal dialogue choices.

There is a mod for that, I used it for my TTW playthroughs

Agreed, I think even Sawyer himself has made this point before. In Fallout 1 and 2, skill checks weren't indicated, although it was usually pretty obvious which lines were speech lines and which were normal once you had gotten them. I wish they stuck with that.

Just make sure you play FO3 with all the DLCs but Operation Anchorage and Mothership Zeta give you absolutely OP gear that will make the game super easy so just put the gear aside if you want the challenging aspect.
Also Unofficial and Official patch have some mutually exclusive fixes and some quests may glitch respectively, I would suggest unofficial patch but see for yourself.

Fallout 3 is great, it has a ton of memorable locations and quests despite the main quest ending being a bit of a meme. The art-deco design of D.C looks fantastic. All the settlements are really distinct and creative. The tenpenny tower and tranquility lane quests (among others) are some of the best and most memorable side quests bethesda has ever done (maybe not the highest bar but still). Fallout 3 was Bethesda at it's creative peak

      Anonymous

I've always liked the Tenpenny Tower quest. I think people dislike it because there is no ending where everything works out and everyone sucks your dick for doing such a great job. Instead, it shows that even if you the player do everything right, the actual living, breathing NPCs that exist within the game still have their own goals and motivations that you cannot control.
Roy killing all the Tenpenny residents after you did your best to persuade them to accept the ghouls filled me full of rage the first time I did that quest. I wasn't angry at the game for not giving me the idealistic conclusion, but at the characters for betraying the trust that I had placed in them, as well as betraying the trust of the others who accepted them in.

And 3Dogg doesn't know first hand what's going on in the wasteland. He just reports on the shit he hears, even if there's more to the story.

Let me get this straight: you enjoyed the elements of New Vegas that Fallout 3 butchered so badly that it's still being discussed on a daily basis 16 years later, and you're asking if you should play it?

Fallout 3 has better exploration, atmosphere and DLC than NV. It's definitely worth playing.
But I still prefer NV, because it has more replayability and many improvements over Fallout 3.

It's goyslop that doesn't do anything right. Bad characters, voice acting, combat, writing, story, dogshit level design etc. etc. There are better shooters and RPGs out there.
