Fallout 4

The female option in Fallout 4 just isn’t cut out to survive in a post-nuclear Commonwealth. Unlike previous Fallouts, the protagonists aren’t vault dwellers with basic training or wastelanders, they’re pre-war people with normal lives.

The male option is, what, a trained war veteran who fought in Anchorage and has thorough survival experience and knows how to use guns and power armor? The female option is a lawyer, I can’t find anything in the Sole Survivor’s home that suggests she’d be able to even use a gun, let alone have survival instincts or even know how to operate a power armor.

I don't understand why they cut Nora's military background when it covers any basic logic holes surrounding her efficiency in survival. And yes there's confirmation on this, there's a mod that restores her cut dialogue for being in the military.

      >Unlike previous Fallouts, the protagonists aren’t vault dwellers with basic training
Vault dwellers had no training whatsoever to survive out in the world. Not really. Neither in F1 nor in F3 do you have any clue what to expect out there, you need to be told basic shit like what ghouls are or that society trades in caps etc.
      >I can’t find anything in the Sole Survivor’s home that suggests she’d be able to even use a gun, let alone have survival instincts
I'm fairly sure F4 has bigger problems like the MC being voiced at all or having the fixed background of "pre-War person that has a son and loves their spouse very much"
      >or even know how to operate a power armor
PA didn't need training in F1 or F2 either, it was a Bethesda invention so you couldn't put it on in GNR five minutes into the game

      >And yes there's confirmation on this, there's a mod that restores her cut dialogue for being in the military
It doesn't work how you think it does. It's normal for MC VAs to record all voicelines even those not designed for them, just in case. It's way faster and cheaper in the long run to have the assurance that you have all lines for either option than having to call the actor back because you didn't record that one line six months ago and now for some reason you need it. Same reason both Shepard and both Vs from Cyberscam have all lines for everything, even those that weren't intended from the get go. Hell it's the same reason Arthur has New Austin lines in RDR2. Every single piece of concept art from even before they nailed down their backstories has Nate as a soldier and Nora as a civilian

      I dunno, I like Nora

Funny because it's unknown who the artist for that storyboard is but it's suspected it might be Adam Adamowicz who died in February 2012. He was Bethesda's main artist for Oblivion, F3 and Skyrim and it was confirmed he contributed in some part to F4 before passing away. Frick cancer.

I still like what we got in the final version though, still feels retrofuturistic but also plausibly realistic. VR version definitely lets you appreciate the assets a lot more though. They put a lot of detail and thought into a lot of it.

        >being voiced at all
Not even part of the fricking problem of Fallout 4's narrative at all. I am fricking sick of seeing this get parroted.
Fricking Gothic, Risen, most if not all of Piranha Bytes shite has a voiced protagonist and people suck their dicks off for offering a role playing experience.
Same with Witcher and Mass Effect, all of them have a voiced protagonist and at least the first game of both IPs are lauded for offering a good role playing experience.
Even if the protagonist of 4 was silent, the options you have are fricking garbage. The mildly different responses you get from other characters for the chosen options are still voiced. In other words, Bethesda was so talentless that they hired voice actor(s) to voice 3~4 different dialogue that was written in a way to have the same fricking outcome or a binary outcome or a binary one. Same problem Skyrim had, which should surprise nobody since the main writer of that also smeared its shit on a paper and called it writing for Fallout 4.
The main quest is fricking garbage even if your protagonist didn't cry SHAWN every other second.
The main factions are at best flavorless carry overs (Minutemen-Desert Rangers from Wasteland, BoS-BoS, Railroad-Followers of the Apocalypse for robots, i.e. morons) and at worst completely nonfrickingsensical groups that are wasting their time and energy for no practical return (Institute)
No silent protagonist on earth would have salvaged this fricking game narratively.

it wouldn't have fixed the game but it would've been really interesting if they made the other spouse a companion. either the institute gives you a synth body to stick their brain in or they just don't kill the other one and you can come back later to thaw them out. I would've loved a little alternate path where its a married couple fricking around the wasteland, visit places the two of them used to go and reminisce, then both of them just ream the shit out of shawn for being a dumbass so hard he buckles down.

It's even more moronic how they made the robot recognize 800 different names just to have him in the prologue and later as a companion. Would've been much better to be able to name Dogmeat and have the main character recognize some names and actually use them, since he's the companion the game pushes you towards.

Originally Dogmeat wasn’t supposed to take up a companion slot. It was supposed to be the MC, a companion and then Dogmeat. So you could have been tooling around the Wasteland with Codsworth and Dogmeat. Fortunately there is a mod that restores that.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Fallout 4 has the oblivion problem where they put so much effort into shit that's nice setdressing but inconsequential, and not enough effort where it counts (i.e. The gameplay and story)

Problem with Fallout as a setting is that it sort of tries to blend both a more grounded version of what if post and post-post apocalypse with some of the weirder elements of fiction, both the original ideas and others they picked up from 20th century sci fi stuff. So you get shit like radiation mutating drastically instead of just killing things or giving birth defects or pre war food that can be eaten hundreds of years after the war.
It's an interesting setting, with some interesting aesthetics, but it demands you to suspend your disbelieve much. I think in a way you could make a more coherent Fallout-like setting, but fantasy where you either remove some silly shit or just explain it away with magic. I had such setting in my mind for years, but problem is that I'm just not good at writing and it would be very derivative to the point it would piss off people anyway, most likely.
A sort of set more early in post apocalypse type of setting, more of a Honest Hearts and other lore bits in inspiration, no guns, but with magic.

Because Bethesda is a studio of fricking men who still value stoicism. The player expresses concern to see the vault littered with corpses and giant roaches but rather than becoming an emotional wreck he takes it in stride and just wants to know what has happened to the world and where the frick his kid is. This makes Bethesda an objectively good studio, not a bad one.

Being a synth is so unbelievably moronic it'd take five seconds into Father's speech before a scientist shouted your recall code.
            >inb4 no one but Father knew
We see how Gen 3 synths are made and it's not exactly shown to be a process that can be hidden away in a backroom, it needs a huge ass machine run by multiple people to be created. Then there's DiMA's whole argument on how the implanted memories normally aren't that great if you're actually trying to inspect them and how he specifically calls out the fact you can't remember anything before the bathroom scene as evidence you might be a synth, completely ignoring how five minutes after that scene at the beginning of the game you start talking to Nora about how you fricked her pregnant in a park nine months earlier.

The evidence doesn't line up with your theory, Kellogg went there to snatch Shaun and they needed him to make gen 3 synths in the first place then they froze the sole survivor until Shaun releases them. Sole survivor is a real human period.

I was on board with the "MC in a synth" theory the moment I heard he gets frozen for 200 years

In Fallout 2 a guy gets revived from suspended animation and dissolves a few minutes later, the procedure just doesn't work. No one else before or since has been shown to survive being frozen, let alone frozen TWICE. On top of that, synths are explained to not need to eat, drink, or sleep, and are capable of superhuman strength and agility -- all things that are also true of the player. Shaun is the only problem with the theory, since he is from your vault (he has "pristine" DNA) and would have survived the same process. You also independently establish that you were there and frozen/revived/frozen via seeing the scene in Kellogg's memories. It really feels like they were going to do it and then changed their minds

I think it’s the best Fallout mechanically, asides from the perk point system. It’s debatable whether streamlining it like this was good or not. It also has the best potential for story since it has a loooot of good ideas, but it was akin to juggling too many balls. The voiced protagonist isn’t as bad as people make them out to be, but uh, again, this is a matter of debate.

        Anonymous

I also don't think the voiced protagonist wasn't bad per se, it just doesn't work with Bethesda's normal style of a blank protagonist. Either have it voiceless and give the player the freedom to decide how they act and think, or make it voiced and with an actual character that has several pre-written paths the player can choose for them to go down. Fallout 4's protagonist wanted to be voiced and have character, but still be a totally blank slate and it didn't work.

The main idea being centred around synths and what it means to be human, I thought was a completely pointless direction to take the story in the Fallout setting and the writers had jack shit to really say that was interesting or new about the subject.

A semi-competent raider group like the gunners could have used his Vault-Tec knowledge to go after known vault locations to try taking one of them as a base, kinda like the guys in Vault 88 are trying to or the Fiends managed to in New Vegas.

    >what are companions
    >what is a video game
Now that's just accounting for completing the main story, but you didn't say that, you just said "survive", which plenty of weak females do in the Fallout world simply by staying within a safe settlement. So as long as she could get to Diamond City or some shit, with Preston or her robot protecting her, she'd be fine.

Stealth takes training as well, dude, much more so than average soldier training. Some people grow into new heights under pressure, but not when it comes to life or death scenarios on a daily basis if you’re just a meek civilian.

I have a seriously hard time believing some lawyer, be it male or female, is more competent at killing an army of raiders than wastelanders, let alone know how Power Armor works and how to operate one.

3 had one or two sober writers, so there's a few plot holes - but it's campy fun. Nothing in fallout 4 makes sense. Nothing. The 'campy fun' stopped being fun and just became an excuse for shit writing and mechanics. Not the survivors, not the plot, not the SPECIAL rework, the guns, the over-emphasis on gunplay, the power armor being handed to you, nothing. It's like a fallout fan's fever dream or nightmare where nothing makes sense.

Fallout games didn't need as much modding TES games for me. It's because of the lack of melee combat. You need around 100+ mods to make skyrim's melee combat not shit.

There pretty much can't be quest mods because of the voiced protag. The Enclave mod does its best to make it work with generic lines, but it's just not good unless you also mod out all the protag voicing.

As the other anon said the voiced MC makes quest mods awkward to develop, F4 mods will be a make or break kinda deal when total conversions like Miami or London are out.

There is voice synthesizing software now which lets you have an actual voiced actor say whatever the frick you want. They could make quest mods if they wanted to.

The problem with FO4 quest mods is that the only one who made them is a completely untalented fricking autist hack (thuggysmurf).

You have to have an extensive library of that person saying shit in booth conditions and train an AI to synthesise properly, then do audio balancing yourself to make it sound like an actual person. The amount of work that went into the existing synthesised voices was phenomenal. We don't have that for Nate and Nora.

You guys do know voice acting has been an issue since fricking Oblivion, right? Why is it suddenly a problem with a voiced protagonist but it was not a problem with voiced NPCs? Nobody is shocked to see no voice acting in a quest mod and Fallout 4 is no exception.

              Anonymous

Voicing NPCs is easily solvable, higher end quest mods have been including voice acting for years. The voice protag can't as easily be solved, you either have to remove all of the protag's voicelines, including the camera shifts for every dialogue in the game, or replace every single voice file for them with a new voice actor.

                >Voicing NPCs is easily solvable
Except most mods just have silent lines that aren't voice acted and nobody cares because they understand voice acting is not an easy thing to do well and there's no reason you can't do the same thing for the protagonist in Fallout 4.
                >higher end quest mods have been including voice acting for years

Older CRPGs, which I assume you're referring to, were better equipped to handle that kind of thing, since most of the lines weren't voiced anyway. Modded content could blend in without issue, a good example is BG2's Ascension mod.

Worst part of the perks by far. There's a mod that reworks those perks and makes all guns have a single perk to increase damage, and gives the specialization perks the cooler effects, which imo is the best way to do it since flat damage increases are just to keep up with HP inflation of enemies. Personally I like my mod because I want to melt things when I'm blowing ammo.

The main story in Fallout 4 is bad but it doesn't make it a bad game.

As for knowing how to shoot, pre war Fallout is set in a highly conservative society with extreme fear of impending war. Why wouldn't Nora have gun training? You can go to the YMCA right now and take a class.

Vault dwellers can survive the wasteland, if they have the fortitude and training. Pre-war civilians with twig arms and legs whose most strenuous physical activity was lifting groceries and paperwork, frozen in time, and thrown out into the wasteland with zero training on what to expect (or even just bare minimum maintenance skills like every single vault dweller) will not survive the moment they exit a “safe” zone.

fallout 4 is a series of neat ideas used to absolutely zero effect. the voiced protagonist and preset background shit could've worked if your character really reacts to the environment and what they're doing but instead you just go right into doing vile shit without any real in-between. they could've had the nate/nora MC go through some kind of mental break to justify it and have them really react to what they're doing but they just kind of don't give a shit as they blow up innocents or eat corpses. or they could've kept the pre-war frozen aspect but let you pick your past more like being a pre-war criminal frozen like fricking demolition man, but you're always this household normie whose actions outside the basic 'decent person' route are barely justified. its just all so lifeless.

Wasnt it a MAD situtation, and everyone bombed everyone as soon as the first nukes started flying?

The whole world got nuked and FEV’d. There are literal sea monsters living between the continents.

There is no way America is still THAT much of a shithole if Europe was untouched.

Society collapses very quickly once large centers are destroyed.

Supposedly other parts of the world just nuked each other too, for some reason. It always a contrived peace of lore imo. No the world would still be fricked because of mutating fallout and FEV and electronics getting fried, but it would probably be less fricked in many areas outside of China and US.

Do you not know about MAD? Mutually Assured Destruction. Its a concept where two sides in a fight have enough firepower to wipe eachother out completely if they fire everything they've got.

The world wide destruction comes in, when allies join in. China and USA nuke eachother, but then their allies/enemies join in, and it just dominoes until everyone has nukes in the air going at their own enemies.

I guess, but it's a bit more contrived if both sides had actual allies in Fallout universe. Europe seemed to be doing its own thing and at most nuking the middle east. Soviet Union is not mentioned much. Africa, South America, India even less so.

Has it been said in any of the fallout bibles which places were nuked worldwide and which were left alone?

I don't remember, I think that it's just stated that other countries launch their nukes too and that's about it. We know some places that got hit, like Mexico, but that's because I think it was under US control, direct or not. Who would have really wanted to nuke let's say Peru in Fallout universe? Who knows, and it's probably not worth to ask, because at the end of the day Fallout is mostly about America, and maybe even more so about Southwest America so that it has that desert and wild west feel to it that adds wasteland feel that otherwise doesn't always make sense and is harder to replicate in other environments.

Most of the world was fricked prior to the great nuking, that just destroyed what was left of civilization. The resource wars buttfricked Europe and the Middle East, at a minimum. Africa and South America are shitholes on the best of days, and without the west to prop them up you can bet that they'd degrade into primitive warzones. On top of that, FEV was let loose and spread across the planet, so there are mutants everywhere.

there's no words about allies. War was only between china and us. And only they dropped nukes

IIRC NATO doesn't exist because the Soviets played nice (Vietnam and Korea didn't have civil wars). The UN was dissolved a few years before the nuclear exchange

They might be nuclear for the robot half, but the floating half half needs fuel for the little jet engine.
