Fallout

It feels really good. How can we explain it?

What feels good — the music? The story? Gameplay?
    Be more precise, please.

Really nothing. Deep drab lore. It came out around the right time. The intersection of goth and emo. I guess it stopped raining after the nukes went off. Also all the plants stopped living. Really nothing like what actually happens when nukes go off. IRL life comes back, intelligent life would stay away from the dangerous areas the rest would be partially ok. I think the main reason they don't put the natural life in the area is it would require more effort. So they stripped the environment to the bones to eliminate development complexity.

I guess you’re 13 and never saw the movies that inspired Fallout.

Boy and his Dog is super deep and not moronic at all.

What movies deal with post nuclear war themes? Not like Postman or Mad Max but actual 50s retrofuturism 200 years after the war?

Omega Man is one of the most iconic. The movie influences specifically named in the Postmortem are:
          >Road Warrior
          >A Boy And His Dog
          >The Day After
          >Forbidden Planet
          >City Of Lost Children
          >La Jetée

      What a terrible post.
Fallout 1 and 2 have tons of wildlife and flora, more so 2 than 1 but it’s still apparent in 1. it’s just you probably haven’t played beyond Vault 15 or Arroyo.

      >guess it stopped raining
Many characters in the world mention rain, sometimes it even glows in more irradiated areas. Rain exists but it just doesn’t happen because of tech limits or maybe time constraints.

It is metaphorical, and makes for a more alluring game world. I agree, it's stupid, but it's a video game.

I sometimes wish that it had been just an "OK" success and not one that was overwhelming. Fallout 2 wouldn't have been rushed. Fallout 3 (Van Buren) would've been released. Fallout Tactics & BOS wouldn't have existed.

Would've been a far comfier universe.

      >I sometimes wish that it had been just an "OK" success and not one that was overwhelming.
Fallout 1 sold 100,000 units the first year. That's not what I would call an overwhelming success.
      > Fallout 2 wouldn't have been rushed.
You mean the game that was 4x bigger and sold twice as much as 1?
      > Fallout 3 (Van Buren) would've been released.
Many bad decisions at Interplay led to Van Buren not releasing. Fallout 2, which was a commercial success, wasn't one of them.
      >Fallout Tactics & BOS wouldn't have existed.
      Tactics is great, pleb

calling a game that looks like a german knock off artist slapped together on a knee great is not very apt

Fallout was one of the first titles a young gamer would gravitate toward after escaping console serfdom. The subdued colors and sounds and the grimdark tone were a breath of fresh air after subjecting your brain to years of bing bing wahoo.

Here's a real answer for OP. Most games are made fast, because time is money. From concept art to release is RUSH RUSH RUSH. But Fallout was a bit different. Fallout was made as a "side project" within a studio working on other games, mostly on the developers personal time. And they spent a LOT of time on it, spaced out over several years. Many talented people came and went in that time, offering fresh ideas and criticism of the project's direction. So unlike most game settings, Fallout had time for it's setting to "ripen on the vine" before it was fully developed. This is why is oozes soul and thoughtful design from every little detail. There's no substitute for time and passion in art. If you want to learn more, check out the Fallout 2 Postmortem video, it goes into a lot of this and discusses the ideas that were rejected... what Fallout COULD have been if it was rushed.

Yup, that's the one. It's an hour long but worth it if you love the Fallout 1 or 2
