Fantasy City

In high fantasy settings, there are dozens if not hundreds of sentient species, and while in lower magic or more medieval settings it's easier to just keep them separate, high enough fantasy will have a Major city or two where all races meet.

The real question is, how do you make that work? How do you make a city that can accomodate everything from Humans to dragons, every size from fairy to giant?

Does your setting have such a city? How does it work?
If your setting doesn't, how would you make such a city? And where is it, another plane?

I would assume he wants to worldbuild this city while adding flavor for practical "realism"

Well I was kinda here to farm ideas, but fine, in the spirit I'll give it a go.

Preexisting example: Sigil, pic related. Numerous species live here in between the DnD Multiverse and work in a city with wide streets and buildings for every sort, portals to every Plane. It's mostly for humanoids but beholders and dragons can be found here.

Original concept: Interlaced buildings? I'm talking streets wide enough for everyone with save indents/hallways for races smaller than Gargantuan. Buildings are enormous, BUT built into the walls are buildings for humanoids, and built into THOSE walls are buildings for fairies and tinies. Meeting places have interlaced architecture to accommodate all kinds.

      >how it ties to the game
Anon, A setting/setpiece is inherently necessary for a game, unless your campaign exists solely in randomly generated dungeon tiles. Everything in this topic therefore is relevant to any game with a scope larger than dungeon crawl one shots.

Humans as the only playable race is the way to go. It's one of the best indicators that separates a GOOD setting from a DnDogshit setting.

    You really can't.
At some point, rarer races with different body plans will have, at best, limited accommodation.

    >Does your setting have such a city? How does it work?

    >My first Fantasy setting
Not really, Humans had their own continent, the opposite continent had Elves Dwarves Orcs and the like. The metropolitan capital cities had some accomodations for others but Dragons were all recluses who either remained hidden or kept domains in the mountains, and Giants pretty much never showed up in the campaign somehow.

    >My Science Fantasy setting
The biggest gathering place is a planet-wide city so there are districts taylored to people of all sizes, though telecommerce and communications like that tend to deal with any other issues. My players actually ended up feeling pretty small when they visited a planet owned by dragons, and found the whole city formatted for them rather than humanoids.

I hope you run an absurdist fantasy setting for this absurd concept.

Of course, why wouldn't I? Forget the nitty-Gritty fantasy, I want a Giant Lawyer to have to help with a tax dispute between a fairy and her human Ex-Husband because of a misunderstanding involving a goblin wizard that wrecked her magical car.

All of them are just differently colored humans. If they have unusual features like horns, wings or tails, they're retractable.

      Not Giants. (Big)
      Not Beastfolk (inhuman)
      Not Dragons (big and inhuman)
Not Fries sprites and pixies (very tiny)

Think like a city planer. What kind of stuff do you need? Where do you need it? How do you distribute it? Is it all located in one place? Is it spread out?

Then think like a businessman. People have needs. Big people, small people, normal people, dragons, tentacle faces. If one of these groups have needs and you are the first to provide it, you have head start to your competition. Dragons want a bath house in dragon size? Great. Build one and cash in.

I think the first ting you ought to consider is who made/rules the city. As generally even if its meant to accommodate many species there's bound to be signs it was made mostly for one species above others. Like one could say it can serve dragons, ogres, giants, and humans but in reality it was maybe made for dragons but is just large enough for all the others mentioned too.
