FC2 just feels boring and lifeless. There's no interaction with the wildlife and the only people you encounter outside save buildings are hostile enemies trying to kill you. In Far Cry 3 you've got a diverse variety of wildlife that actually serve a gameplay purpose (specifically you need their pelts for upgrades and shit plus a lot of them are deadly as frick and want to kill you), and you've got civilian NPCs, friendly NPCs, and hostile npcs roaming around and engaging with eachother which gives more of a sense of strife and life in the world than FC2 where you never really see the factions duking it out and they're all just focused on trying to kill you specifically. Plus you had a lot more variety in terms of missions in FC3. Every single mission in FC2 boiled down to one of two things
        Regular missions
        >Get mission to blow up an object, kill a guy, or intimidate a guy
        >Random merc buddy calls you up to ask you to blow up an additional object, kill a guy, or intimidate a guy
        >complete merc buddy's job
        >merc buddy asks for help
        >help merc buddy
        >complete primary objective afterwards
        >repeat this for almost every single mission in the game
        Or alternatively
        >Time to unlock new gun
        >Blow up a truck that just drives in an endless circle
        >repeat this every time it's time to unlock a new weapon
The very first time I played FC2, I didn't even realize I was playing through the main missions. I honestly thought I was just doing some randomly generated side missions.

The basic mission format was repetitive but the gameplay itself was dynamic and immersive. I enjoyed setting up mines and chilling behind some rock waiting for a caravan while dying of malaria. It was kino. Obviously the game had flaws and was a buggy mess (had to restart my first play through because of a game ending bug) but it had swagger

wildlife is fricking boring in 3 (and the games that had it onwards) and super arbitrary to fight them

            >yeah, you're white and you're in an African civil war what the frick did you expect to happen?
I'd expect that since there's a civil war going on I'd see the factions involved in said civil war actually fighting one another, maybe even militia buttholes chasing and gunning down civilians. Maybe even the kind of horrific shit that went on in shit like the Rwanda genocide where murderous frickers were cutting their neighbors down with machetes. Outside the cease fire zones the only thing enemies do is wander around until they spot you and start shooting and the only thing they do in the cease fire zones is stand around or wander around town not shooting you.

There's no fricking way you played the game and also didn't have to put a bullet in your buddies skull. Or follow the last dude left in an outpost while in the bushes as he is shitting himself firing all around him trying to convince himself that you are merely human. Or snipe a guy from a cliffside, and then watch as he screams in pain in the open, while his friends try to save him. Or the fantastic menu and map design that doesn't take you out of the game at all.

There is almost none of this shit in 3. A complete regression.

          >I thought you had to go get them at the church from time to time?
Pretty sure it's tied to story progression though, having to go pick up more pills. They also use malaria as an area gate, if you go outside the playable zone you collapse and die of malaria.

          Anonymous

You do have to refill them by doing those missions at the church occasionally, but it's entirely based on how far in the story you are. Only after certain missions will you run out of pills and need to do a refill mission. Outside of those moments, you can literally run around for hours on end and never run out.

I always had this feeling the problem with outpost respawning in 2 came down to short testing time or simply not accounting how often missions had you driving across the map through these outposts. Or someone would've noticed everything was business as usual five minutes after you cleared them.

Crysis was a linear shooter. You're allowed to like it, but it was a radically different game and railroaded you through a cinematic story while heating your room up to boiling point while you played on the lowest settings at 20fps. FC2 was actual open-world.

Malaria was a non-issue. You can ignore it until you're out of pills and get teleported to the church, which happens maybe twice in a playthrough. The respawning outposts were stupid, though. You'd have to drive one of the frickoff-huge trucks through, massacre any cars that followed, and hope you didn't get unlucky.

Far Cry Instincts and Far Cry Instincts Predator were not only the best games in the series but some of the best games ever made. It had this absolutely incredible game mode called predator where a group of mercs had to make it through a player made obstacle course while one of the players was superhuman and hunted them down while they ran for safety. Every day we’d download new maps and make new maps ourselves and run the game mode over and over. It was extremely fun. Being the predator was a power trip and being one of the mercs felt like you were Arnold in Predator, as all your friends around you slowly got picked off until it was only one or two people left running for the finish. We carried it over into Halo 3 with fat boy but it was always the best in Far Cry Instincts because the map editor was better and the mechanics were designed for it.
I played the traditional series after and was disappointed that it was just a generic Ubisoft stealth shooter. The Instinct games were like a superhuman power trip

Weapon degredation might as well not have existed in FC2 for all it added. All you had to do was go to one of your many safe houses all over the map and swap the dirty gun out with a fresh one. There was no cost to swapping it out or anything. Even with the dart rifle which had insanely low durability it just felt pretty arbitrary given how easy it was to just go grab a new one each time I cleared an area. It felt more like it just existed to prevent players from picking up enemy weapons since every enemy's weapon was dirty when you picked it up.

          Anonymous

          >there was no cost
You have to unlock everything to even do that. It's a problem you only overcome by progressing through the game. You will be picking up enemy guns that are better than yours for the first 1/3-1/2 of the game and you WILL fire an RPG that 180's and blows your ass off. Stop making it sound like you never experience it.

2 is unironically the worst Farcry game out of all of the ones I've played. 3 was good, 4 and 5 were boring clones of 3, but only 2 was bad enough to make me drop it multiple times.

Filtered. This man simply cannot appreciate the immersive majesty of fixing bullet damage to his vehicle by tightening a bolt on his engine. Or who could forget resetting their own broken arm that they sustained from being under water for a little too long. Only a true patrician can appreciate the feel of pushing a bullet out of your arm and cauterizing the wound with a cigar that your character just always has because he’s a chad, all from a wound that you received from fall damage.

So how come Ubisoft could get a licensing deal with Jeep but couldn't make accurate gun models?

the gun models in fc2 were pretty good weren't they? I know they had moronic animations like reloading the bolt action rifle

it's intentional. they did the same thing Criterion did with BLACK, they went with what they thought looked cool over accuracy. a lot of Ubi games around that time had ejection ports on the wrong side so the shells would fly toward the screen for maximum kewl.

There are actually a lot of foreigners in SSA. Usually mercenaries or contractors or foreign workers. They usually live in specially designated and segregated cities or towns built specifically for them.

If I remember right, one of the main modders (maybe the creator of Redux?) said that if you extract the audio files they play at a perfectly normal speed. the game itself is playing them slightly too fast.

    For me it's 4 and 5.
I still replay them to this day.
It's 3's formula, but perfected IMO
Also I love the mountainous settings, feels so atmospheric, it's like a breath of fresh air.
3 was when it came out, but in hindsight it aged like milk; clunky controls, boring and empty map, and the outposts were too simple. Also the villains were terribly underused.
I also prefer 4 and 5 silent protagonists, felt easier to immerse myself into the games.
6 doesn't feel like a Far Cry game sadly.

5 is honestly really kino, it's just pretty flawed due to awful main mission design and padding and repetitiveness and cultists constantly harassing you.
5 had all the makings of a legendary game but fell just short with its missteps and typical Ubishit bullshit.
      Such a shame.

        Anonymous

Honestly I like the missions structure in 5. I can understand how being captured by all the villains 9 times throughout the game without them just killing you off annoying, but I thought it was a nice way to make you interact and learn more about the villains.
Also I liked cultists harassing you and being everywhere, it created some fun chaotic moments and it actually made me want to clear all the outposts and liberate the regions so that I could go fishan' peacefully.

          Anonymous

It's not just the ridiculousness of being repeatedly captured and escaping. It's every damn main mission being identical. And there being literally 900 of the same fricking identical missions and listening to the same monologues and going through the same thing in the same regions and the relentless grind.
In many ways my compaints about the main missions of FC5 are very similar to my problems with RDR2, however that game had many other issues in the critical path that FC5 thankfully didn't.
Flawed games, with amazing potential letdown by some critical missteps and poor overarching vision and leadership from the developers.

But they still attacked you even if you cleared a region. I swear to God I still got fairly regular harassment even after clearing a region. Like I remember thinking finally I can fish and explore and mess around in this fun world only to be attacked several times in a supposedly cleared area.

            >But they still attacked you even if you cleared a region
I play it on normal difficulty usually, maybe this impacts spawn rates?
Because for me, the regions are near peaceful after liberating it, I really rarely encounter cultists, in the wild, maybe an ATV with 2 cultists on it from time to time. Also no planes or helicopters at all.

              Anonymous

I don't know, I always play games on the easiest difficulty because I enjoy the powertrip. So I doubt it. Maybe I'm just misremembering, maybe I didn't clear regions as thoroughly as I thought.
I do remember having severe fatigue from critical path and just wanting to do the fun and varied side content, so maybe that's why I was still getting attacked.

              >Also no planes or helicopters at all.
What were they honestly thinking with that. I remember so many times trying to have fun fishing or exploring or driving around and then out of nowhere a fricking plane drivebys (flybys?) me while I'm still in my car and I'm toast.

It's fun when you're in the mood for it. When you just want to explore the world and have fun... it's just monotonous and aggravating.
However I don't want to be too down on it. FC5 is genuinely such a fun game and the side content like UFO hunting or testicle festivals or fishing or doing drugs or stuntracing is a blast.
One thing I missed though was proper radiotower platforming.
Yeah, I actually did love that stuff in 3.

Yeah it was great. Along with creating your own protagonist and him being silent. The arcade games and side content in general were really fun. I guess they had bunkerdiving right, that basically took the place of radiotowers? I remember that being fun.

I remember one of my fondest memories with the game. I was fishing by this lazy river in the most scenic, relaxing setting. Some guy was going by on his jetski, next minute a black bear beelines out of the forest behind me and wades into the water and ragdolls the dude off the jetski, instantly killing him.
Then some fellow fisherman near me whipped out an assault rifle and gunned it down.
It was a really kino moment of random environmental happening.

      5 is fun (and comfy).
Even better if you have a friend to play it with, there is coop.

          >Actually delivers and brings you to your objective, then tells you we're gonna have fun shooting guns (on the resistance most likely)

Perks being tied to clothes killed the whole deal to me.
What I like about 3-4-5 was the sense of progression given by the skill trees, felt like my character was actually becoming this bloodlusted killing machine throughout the game.
It just isn't there in 6, why the frick do I need to equip gloves to be able to do the sidearm or grenade takedown? Why am I not able to do both sidearm and grenade takedown?
Also the supremo and resolver weapons were cringe as frick.
I'm not even gonna talk about how insufferable all the resistance characters are, or how boring the main villain was.

there's a mod that gets rid of that iirc
with mods, FC6 becomes pretty damn good. I had to immediately get rid of that garbage bullet sponge shit.

If there's a mod that fixes the guns I'll play 2 again. And by fixes the guns I mean changes the models and removes weapon durability entirely.

weapon durability is a complete non-issue in FC2. just frickin' go to the weapon shop once every few irl hours, you should already be doing that to restock on ammo and upgrading guns anyway.

It was just fun doing something other than combat. There arent that many games where you climb and scale large objects in firstperson.
