They released videos to showcase the game with that darkness, indicating that they expected it to be perfectly clear. It's not "intended darkness".

Every hit the player landed created a giant pinata explosion of effects.
Which for me is odd, because excessive particle effects are typically designed to hide bad animation, but in this case, the animation in combat is perfectly fine, so no need to use pinata effects.

Cooldown is not related to skill in any way, abilities being limited by a resource is fine, limited by a high execution requirement is fine, limited by cooldown just leads to them being balanced around how long you have to wait, and the game becomes a cooldown cycling simulator at the higher levels, much like what happens to God of War 2018 once you get the Blades of Chaos. The combat was far better when it was just the axe.
