This is a good point. After the last 2 gens I started to realize just because something is coming from a certain company, all the talent could be gone by now. In the same way, it's true that something can come out of any country on the planet and be certified dogshit. There's no "guaranteed always good / bad" entertainment provider.

Unlike FF7 which is basically perfect in terms of plot I feel like FF9 could do with a bit of a rewrite for it's climax. So I'm all for it. Plus there's less 'expanded content' to ruin the pool
I feel like you won't find a single FF9 fan who thinks that the game wouldn't benefit from some additions or changes, but it's the kind of remake that would basically never happen. The game just needs some touch ups to flesh out some characters and do a better job handling some plot threads but that'd require both an immense amount of respect for the original and a careful touch that I don't think anyone at Square-Enix still has.
Yeah that's true. Considering how fucking much of an insult 7Remake is, I don't trust them to do it justice. I just think that purely theoretically a remake of FF9 that changed / fleshed out / expanded on some plot points could work well compared to 7.

FF9 needs a lot more than just touched up graphics to be worthwhile. It needs some rewrites, cause half of the main cast is either forgotten or redundant. The plot could be exactly the same if the party never changed from Zidane, Vivi, Steiner, and Dagger.
Quina is the most obvious throwaway character having no agency in the story whatsoever. The only times he/she is even referenced are during plot contrivances like the marriage to Vivi, or the split party to fight the elementals.
Amarant is an example of Square's bad habit of inserting a playable character to meet an archetype quota rather than question what their place in the story is. I vaguely remember that he was meant to be a spy on the group in some capacity, but there's no motivation for this character to stay with the party for the rest of the game. but muh rivalry with Zidane. Bullshit. Square just wanted to have a monk class in the game and used the loosest terms to justify it.
I love Freya, and so does this thread. But even we have to admit that after 20 minutes into disc 2, her arc falls off a cliff. Maybe it's thematic, Fratley forgot about her, and so did the game. It's a shame too.
Eiko does have a bit more to do with the plot in her connection to Dagger, but I would see this bug-eyed sprite written out of the story with prejudice if it were up to me. Until Charlotte's babytalk plagued Trials of Mana, Eiko was the most annoying character Square had ever squeezed out. And it wasn't just that she was irritating in the story, her skillset was completely redundant to Dagger's White Mage/Summoner skills.
FF9's problems are deeper than just it's story, but at least a remake would likely address the loading times.
Quina is a bonus character like Vincent from FF7 but Amarant is a bad character, yeah
I don't really care about the plot as much as I care about the characters and the things they do, Quina is cute and blue magic is fun. Freya is cool and her story was some fucked up shit, she's also a cute rat. Eiko has her moments, I think she had the most plot relevance with the eidolon stuff, she basically gave us context to everything we'd learn about Garnet and made the summoner village more like a real thing rather than just a memory of something that used to exist.
I think they included Amarant because they wanted to do the split party thing but they realized they balanced the game around 4 party members but didn't have an eighth party member. I would rather Blank had just been our 8th guy but whatever.
Yeah, IX is my 3rd favourite FF game, but the distinction between Main Cast and Side Cast is just too strong to be ignored.
I’m fine with Quina being a joke party member, but the lack of closure in Freya’s story just hurts. And I legit NEVER used Amarant, he’s Kimari-tier bench-warmer.

It's my favorite FF game and I still think it needed to beef up the side character plot threads. The thing is that it'd actually be perfect for a remake because in a modern context, you could do all of that by just tacking on sidequests and active time events. A perfect remake would be the same game, but with modern technology and all of the time and budget for the developers to not only realize the original vision but expand it in satisfying ways. But this isn't a perfect world so it's not going to get a perfect remake.

I can't see the appeal of FF9 whatsoever and I like the NES/SNES games, the other PS1 games (including FFT), and the PS2 games. Every character other than Vivi is aesthetically revolting and unlikeable and the animal people world is twee and insipid.
I think most people are like me and the people that still talk to each other on social media that think FF9 is great in 2023 are a highly selected group with an oddball taste. S-E shouldn't touch FF9 with a 10-foot pole.
