The moment they made ShB a seasonal anime plot was the moment FFXIV died. It attracted a lot of the bad crowd and they started catering towards storygays with really fricked pacing but "muh emotional kino". They tried, I actually believed they tried but sometimes the doctor can't fix everything and there's a lot of "what the frick were they thinking" with xiv story.
Gameplay went down the shitter. Not like it was particularly fun but now each expansion just copies the last expansion because the frickery in HW.

Shadowbringers and Endwalker are about stopping gods from blowing up the universe. That's about as far from grounded as you can get. Elements of that plot were present in Heavensward and Stormblood, but they were never the focus. Likewise, ShB and Endwalker have humanistic elements, but they're mostly vehicles for exploring the cosmology of the setting.

I generally didn't mind EW but they REALLY shouldn't have mashed two expansions into one. It just makes the garlemald part a huge disappointment. Some of the character writing in EW was obnoxiously annoying but that's like most of FFXIV "comedy" writing. They can't balance tone at fricking all. But yes that's the problem when they don't plan shit out and they bring a writing doctor to the team.
ShB had some real dumb shit too, dumbfrick forest was fricking dumb. Honestly I feel like playing the game again on an alt to properly criticize the story since it's been so long. ARR post patch had my actual favorite moments.

Gameplay was never good in xiv, it's like early WoWstalgia where people remember it being better because it was before the pipeline was established, when the game was more wild and untamed.
Now that the hedges are manicured and the formula is instated, people are waking up to the fact that xiv has fundamentally garbage gameplay and the real reason people are enjoying it is for the side content and erp and shit, which every other game severely lacks.

I see the team doing that losing more often than not. The thing is, in Nadaam, taking and defending ovoos is the key issue and the team getting the most Battle Highs will win that fight every time. So, the cheesing team usually doesn't fight much and by the end of the match they've barely got any BHs and just get steamrolled too hard for even the cheese to work.

Shadowbringers was only good in the beginning and the end. The middle (the most of the story) was shitty go there and get this gem filler. Combat gets increasingly easier and the dungeons become simpler as the game goes along. Tanks and Healers are too easy to be fun.

I don't hate his compositions, but I do dislike his tendency to just add fricking vocal tracks to everything.
Also another thing I hear from this game that I very much notice that I never see other people complain about is just how fricking bad the actual use of motifs are? Everything just used so fricking haphazardly.
The only themes that actually gets somewhat consistent use throughout all fricking 6 expansions are the use of the maker's ruin motif for being WOL's theme and the FF3 map theme for being Graha's, the rest is just all over the fricking place. Like, the actual motif for the refrain for the final fricking boss is the same one that they use for the field theme for Sharlayan *and* Radz at-han. It's so fricking distracting. The sound team are just so fricking laissez faire with music that they'll just plop it into any scene based on the tempo.
To offer some meaningful criticism and not just kiss Sokken ass or behave like some demented freak screeching random poo poo pee pee words I agree that he overuses the same leitmotif. When you use it once or twice that has an emotional pull but when you recycle it for everything it starts to grow stale.
I like his music, but Uematsu did really great with Dragonsong and Answers. I think he's clearly better with classical/orchestral stuff while Sokken is firmly in a more modern fusion camp.
Also whoever did stormblood's anthem jobbed terribly. The lyrics are great, it can be used right (in the Shinryu fight the leitmotif is good). but the trailer's music is so boringly dry.

For the longest time, Answers was used alongside Bahamut, for multiple expansions, and I get that the lyrics were supposed to be sung from Hydaelyn's POV or whatever, but now in EW, we're supposed to thematically tie it to her as well as bahamut/the calamity?
Also, I talked about the use of the Maker's Ruin earlier, and I did like how ShB used the motif with More Than Truth, especially in scenes with Arbdert, but past a point, they just used it for stock generic sad music in shit that doesn't even pertain to WoL.
I get that you can only have so much music in a game, and I'm not asking for KH level, Nomura/Shimomura level of autistic teasing future character a game ahead via leitmotifs, but I expect at least a certain level of consistency in use.
Answers is the main theme of the whole game. It existed long before the End of an Era cutscene was made. It plays in Bahamut's fight because Coil is the epilogue to 1.0, not because it's Bahamut's theme.
well, I didn't know that from playing 1.0, but you can't blame me especially the way they used it not only for coils, but also stuff like that duty in the intro to Bozja, where you fight bahamut with cid and whatsername.

The main problem with FFXIV is that the content is always the same and has been since heavensward. You can guess with 99% accuracy what's going to be available in every expansion or every major patch. The only thing that changes are the locations and the story.
Occasionally they'll try something new just to make it not important in relation to the main paths of progression and then quickly abandon it.

Years ago I played the wrath of the lich king as a hunter and I remember sending my pet, laying down traps and shooting my bow felt very satisfying and solid, I get the feel FFXIV is much more 'floaty' granted I only played up to level 20, but I also played wow only to level 30 or so and used to enjoy it.

Yes, I'm saying the game died years ago. A friend bought me the expansions and it's all more of the same lame quests and cutscenes with a few fun dungeons/bosses inbetween. XIV is a casual MMO, most of its content is incredibly casual, easy to digest and to clear, with a large chunk of that even being completely social - Housing, Gold Saucer minigames, etc.
And I wouldn't have it any other way.
It's not really social as everyone just lurks in their FC chat, link shell or discord. All the major towns are just people emoting while they rp in private. Nobody speaks.

Except the only “human” that could actually stand up to Meteion was 9/14ths of our good friend Azem who also needed Hydaelyns blessing to survive along with my great-grandson Zenos Viator Galvus who had Hydaelyns blessing too, except his was reverse-engineered in a Garlean laboratory. And he was a good friend.

Yeah...I hate it. I had to admit to myself the game was over after EW. I just can't bring myself to resub. Theres no reason to play any one dps over the other, no reason to pick any particular tank, or healer because of the homogenization of the classes. Its been made easier and easier for the lowest comon denominator and...here we are. It was fun while it lasted and I have lots of great memories from the game. Still hate stormblood though. Simple as.

On my server there is a group of people who just sit in Limsa and use shout/say as their own personal group chat. It's the same people there all the time. They never do anything else. I cannot comprehend the reason behind doing this in a video game that charges you a monthly fee.
