I recenently 100% all 3 games
13 is boring as shit. Even when you reach the archylte steppe 10+ hours in it's only a mild improvement
13-2 is actually great, really enjoyed it
Lightning returns had potential. The story is horrendous and makes no sense at all and the time restrictions are more stressful/annoying than fun. But the structure of the game is decent. 4 areas with their own main stories to be completed in whichever order you want with side quests sprinkled in. Gameplay is unique
>13-2 is actually great, really enjoyed it
I started playing right after finishing 13 and I couldn't understand wtf was happening and then boom, time travel.
Yeah the story is kind of all over the place >During the final cutscene of 13 Lightning suddenly disappears >Goddess whisked her away to protect her from Caius >For whatever reasons needs regular human Serha's help when Lightning is now a literal goddess herself >Caius wants to kill her to stop the flow of time to stop Yeul reincarnations from dying >Actually Caius dying is what stops the flow of time
Just doesn't make a whole lot of sense unless I'm wildly misunderstanding what happened
But the gameplay itself was nice. Going to bite-sized areas. Seeing how they changed in different times, many centuries apart.
The alternate paradox endings for beating bosses before you're actually supposed to in the story was great too
>Caius wants to kill her to stop the flow of time to stop Yeul reincarnations from dying >Actually Caius dying is what stops the flow of time
Caius has the Heart of Etro which is the last thing keeping the Goddess in that world and it grants him effective immortality. He can only be killed in a separate ritual by Noel. Thus he wants to die.
>Goddess whisked her away to protect her from Caius
This is not Etro's motivation. >For whatever reasons needs regular human Serha's help when Lightning is now a literal goddess herself
She can't leave Valhalla because she's constantly fighting with Caius. And their battle from the perspective of the mortal world is essentially eternal, for Valhalla is an omnipresent realm in FNC lore, where time is a meaningless concept. >Actually Caius dying is what stops the flow of time
Because Etro's Heart beats in his chest. Heart stabbed -> Etro dies with Caius.
>Caius wants to kill her to stop the flow of time to stop Yeul reincarnations from dying >Actually Caius dying is what stops the flow of time

That still doesn't explain how Lightning is involved in all this. Why get her and Serah involved when this is completely between Caius and Noel. Why DOES Caius have the heart of Etro and not Lightning. Wouldn't it make more sense to give her the heart and Caius wants to kill her instead
>That still doesn't explain how Lightning is involved in all this.
Because Toriyama wanted it that way. Lightning was accidentally dragged into Valhalla. >Why get Serah involved
In Valhalla Lightning has visions of Serah losing a battle with Caius at some point in the future. She then entrusts Noel to bring Serah to Valhalla to protect her. This was Lightning's initial plan. >Why DOES Caius have the heart of Etro and not Lightning.
Etro blessed him with the Heart during a time before the War of Transgression.
Anon, the point of my reply is to show you that most of your questions have answers, and that you can find them in the game's main story, codex, as well as in the Ultimanias and the novels. Have fun.

I appreciate the answers anon and I realise my problem isn't with my questions not having answers, my problem is I don't like the answers
Lightning didn't have the heart, meaning she knew Caius had it, also meaning she knew that killing him is what he wanted. She saw the vision of Serah losing to Caius, a person Serah didn't even know existed so clearly the best course of action is to... get Serah to come to the place where Caius is right now
I stand by what I said in my previous post. The story would have been a lot more coherent if Lightning was the one with Etro's heart and Caius' goal was to kill her to stop Yeul from constantly dying because as things stand Lightning has no business fighting Caius for eternity
I did 100% in order a few years back too. For my money, 13 was clearly the best. Took like 3x as long to finish as the other 2, much better writing, charming characters. 13-2 was also great but clearly rushed and not as inspired. 3 was my least favorite too BUT I really loved what they did with it and it’s my least favorite of 3 games I actually really ended up enjoying. Now I consider FF dead, these were the last hurrah.
>ll and the time restrictions are more stressful/annoying than fun
??? I literally did 99% of all sidequests and had like 2 or 3 days. Real bummer is the fucking piece of shit difficulty. Where easy is basically normal.
I really disliked how you had to complete side-quests to gain stats. With the thought of a time limit and missable quests always looming in the back of my mind it just wasn't a pleasant experience. Not to mention the massive difficulty gaps going from early to mid game, then to end game.
It's crazy hard at first, then gets braindead easy and back to insane
The soundtrack in 13-3 is really good TBQH. The difficulty is higher than you would expect a Final Fantasy game to be at and I remember the desert superboss like it was yesterday. It definitely felt like SquareEnix's attempt at super condensed world like Skyrim with the difficulty of a Dark Souls game. Story is total and complete nonsense and I will not even pretend to say it was passable.
but i will add that in my personal opinion another reason i didnt enjoy 13-3 was because lightning was the only playable character and i didnt like her as a protagonist. which is why shes a lot cooler in 13-2
Man, I really wish 13-2 was good. This game has one of the best aesthetics I've ever seen in jrpg and the battle OSTs were just perfect. Too bad the story fell apart, it dragged everything down with that time travel shit

How is a decade years old game mogged FF16 this hard?
FF13 trilogy was made by the same team that develop 7R and I guess Kitase doesn't want to outsource chink company to ruin the game like what they did with FF10 again. it will happen at some point but now they're too busy atm

I love my wife Vanille!
go away Fang
was already burned out on the terrible gameplay when it finally got to this point
yeah i remember getting to pulse, doing all the optional shit available to me, and then never touching the game again

It's weird how the XIII trilogy hasn't been remastered yet

I'm always surprised how effectively my brain censors the HD version from my active memory until I see it posted again
I was so hype to play this game back in 2009, but it was xbox exclusive only, so I never got to play it, even after it released on pc years later.
I have fond memories farming adamantoises on my xbox360…good times…
this is my favorite FF song
I'm not too big on the game, I think it's better than it reviewed but it's not great.
