Think about present year SE making a direct sequel to one of the mainline FF games. Just think about it for a second. No, ACTUALLY think about it.

Now realize that not only will the drama CD be completely ignored, but FFX-3 will be released as a limited time event in FFXIV or one of their many gacha games. They will never, NEVER do anything worthwhile for a final fantasy game that isn't 7.

A synopsis is not a script, dumbass. It's the wikipedia "plot" section of a few paragraphs. Someone scribbled down a few story beat ideas, Nomura sketched some ideas down because that's what artists do.

You really think they've got some solid plan in place for a game he admitted would not even be seriously considered until VII-R is finished?

Yeah im not saying it will happen 1000% because even games that are in development can be cancelled. But it has more chances than any other project. The only other time those devs talked about wanting to develop one game before announcement it was FF7R

Also, seeing how the 2 parts are being developed at the same time, it wont take 10 years lol

The only reason for it to not take 10 years is because it will be canned at Part 2 and they'll be told to wrap that shit up asap.

There is such thing as a "main line" fantasy game? It was my understanding that every single game in the series had no real connection to each other and that they were all just spin offs.

Mainline just means the straight numbered games. There's a lot of VII spin-offs, the Dissidia games and mobile gachas that usually feature characters from multiple games now.

I should make the shittiest plot in a video game to ever exist in order to stop them from making a new game.".

In the Faiz novel, the main cast either gets killed or raped. Kusaka (rider Kaixa) raped Mari and keeps her as sex slave. He also kills a pregnant Yuka (swan Orphnoch) if I remember correctly. That's not all but let move to another one.
In the Ryuki novel, Ren is banging Yui on the side, Zolda's personal assistant has his mouth sown shut with a golden wire. Ouja was left in a toilet as a baby and had to eat literal shit.

What’s even more baffling is that. ALL
    of Yuna character development from

You don't think that she was trying out being more carefree and ultimately decided it just wasn't for her? She never sought out attention or fame, she came from a small, humble island and was a humble girl herself.

        Anonymous

But why would she suddenly go back to being religious when their religion was a lie and they rebelled against it at the end of FF X? That makes no sense

          Anonymous

There were a great many people on Spira in X-2 who advocated for keeping to many of the teachings of Yevon, with some reforms of course. Especially among the older folks who'd grown up under it. Familiarity breed comfort. Yuna herself is analogous to the choices the people of Spira had to make. She had only ever known a humble, religious lifestyle until the end of her pilgrimage. She never expected to survive, and so the resulting celebrity and attention she received as the great savior of Spira would have been especially hard for her to deal with. So she retreated to what she knew best. Still helping people, but in a quiet way, without the celebrity.

She doesn't. If you read the novel, she still thinks the religious people are fricking moronic in her thoughts. The reason she looks priestly in the audio drama is because she's praying to Tidus' sex Fayth all the time to keep him from disappearing. The rest of her surface mannerisms and appearance are to make it easier for her to do that in secret from Tidus or anyone else by appearing as little ass possible among people and being withdrawn and stoic.

      "T: ""You giggled."

      Y: "Its a secret."

      T: "Yunaaa!"

Tidus spoke in a pitiful voice. It was funny, and unbearably adorable.

      T: "Ouch!"

When she looked, Tidus was holding the back of his head.

      T: "Huh?"

Tidus looked around in surprise. Before his eyes, there was a ball, rolling slowly. It was the colour of tanned leather, about the same size they use in blitzball matches.

      T: "A Blitzball!?"

Tidus started walking toward the ball, looking for it's owner.
      After one step...

As Yuna watched the situation, she was surprised by the tears that suddenly started welling up. Her feelings were greatly shaken, and she couldn't stand. As she crouched on the ground, holding herself with both arms, she was overcome with unbearable sadness.
Just then, there was a huge sound. Yuna was blown back by a violent explosion, thrown, spinning through the air. Something flew in front of her eyes. It was Tidus' head, fixed in an expression of surprise.

      Yuna lost consciousness.

      Unsent: "Remember him.
      His name... was Tidus, correct?"

An unknown voice called to Yuna.

There is another translation; context is they are shipwrecked on some random island and exploring:
She acquiesced, but she wanted to laugh. He could have put into practice this resolution without saying such a thing, but he had done it to be sure that she knows what efforts he was going to produce.

          What a child!

He was thirsty for recognition and safety, and she could not ignore his lack of maturity. This is why they had quarrelled several times while they had just met again.

For two years, time had stopped for Tidus. Seventeen and nineteen years old. Twenty and twenty-two. Twenty-five and twenty-seven... For the moment their age difference was a problem, but if they stayed together for a long time it would fade away. He irritated her sometimes; despite everything she had not changed her mind: she wanted to age by his side. This was her will since their first meeting.

“What are you thinking about?” Tidus asked.

          “Why?”

He rubbed himself on the back of his head before turning around. A balloon, similar to a blitzball, was rolling slowly at his foot.

“I wonder who its owner is...” the young man was taken back whilst looking around him.

He took a step forward to pick up the object, and Yuna felt tears stinging her eyes. Her legs were shivering. She squatted and folded her arms around her shoulders. She was suddenly overwhelmed by an unbearable sadness.

A powerful roar sounded through the air, and the young woman was thrown backwards. An object fell beside her. No, not an object... it was Tidus. His face was showing an expression of surprise. But only his head was visible, his body had disappeared.

Well, that last part's false because the entire game of X-2 is premised on Sin being dead, Yevon being destroyed, and the entire land in semi-permanent party time mode(or at least what that counts for in a world as fricked up and morbid as spira), while the al bhed start israeliteing up the world and the guado frick off to skulk in the woods hiding behind mushrooms fearing ronso assassins everywhere.
Allowing Tidus to be brought back was shit, but a lot of FFX definitely fricking mattered in X-2.

Not everyone was happy sin was gone. The change sucked according to some and they wanted things back to how they used to be.

The EVIL ones here are Kitase and Nojima. They are the cancer killing Square. Nomura wanted FF7 Remake to be a faithful remake but he got overruled by Kitase who insisted we got ghost jannies and Zack being alive . Frick them both. Toriyama just wants to frick Lightning so he’s harmless

Nojima pumps out his fanfiction and doesn't care anymore, he's getting paid either way.
I wonder what happened to Kitase, I find it difficult to believe that he's the same person that directed the OG FF7, FF8, and FF10. Ever since he's been a producer and a businessman running CBU1.
S-E should allow Nomura and Toriyama to work on a new IP and reuse ideas from Versus 13 so that entire saga is put to rest.

You can really see elements of them being moronic as early as FF7 with how disjointed the whole game was. The tonal whiplash juxtaposed the good and bad times, but I don't think it was intentional. I think it maybe only worked because the game style was so simple and broken up by battles.

Then FF9 had the whole amnesia and time travel thing.

FF10 was dumb in its own ways.

The truth is that kitase is still a genius, but he is too unhinged. Like wanting to kill the whole party in og ff7, nomura had to stop him.

prequels are stupid, first of all. They have to add all kinds of bullshit that never shows up in the future and creates a ton of plot holes, because the little bit of backstory we get needs to be padded out to a full game when it was only ever supposed to be a backdrop.

Add to that there are no new locations for the party to go and nothing new to see. You'll be going to the exact same temples in the exact same towns looking exactly the same. All of Spira was seen in X

Oh an X thread. This is the first FF game I’m playing. I made it to the mountain area with Kimahri’s tribe. So far it’s been a pretty good time. From what I hear this game is actually worse than all of the games from IV-IX era. Are they all really that good? What did X do to be considered worse than them?

Super linearity mainly. But it's still probably better than VIII. That game is a mess. A mess with a lot of soul, but still a mess.

So were the earlier ones really super open? To this game’s credit it seems to open up in Calm Lands area. I did a bunch of side quests there.

Almost every final fantasy game is good. My personal favourites are tactics and 5, but the only "bad" ones are 2 and 13, imo. 2 is flawed but interesting and 13 is 13.

X was the first time a final fantasy game never opened up and was simple "levels" stitched together with go here and then go here gameplay. When you promise a certain style for almost 20 years the customers come to expect it.

A lot of people who grew up with 7-9 found the voice acting in X grating, and the lack of an open world map disappointing. Being the worst in a series of fantastic games isn't that bad though, if you're having a good time then good on you.

Hope you check out the older games after X and don't feel too put off by the downgrade in technology from PS2 to PS1.

      Anonymous

The complaints you'll often hear regarding X come from people who played the earlier games and didn't like the linearity or lack of an open world from the earlier games. Personally I don't think X would've gained anything from that but I can see how it was a concern during development since they made the story about a pilgrimage meaning you're supposed to take a very specific route with little deviation.
You can revisit and find new spots when you get the airship.

X is a cutscene hallway, just like XIII, but unlike XIII it delivers on the contract of actually being an interesting cutscene hallway. Voice acting makes things worse more often than better, but in X it's ok. It's not what I want FF to be, but it's good at what it sets out to be. Even if it's the beginning of the end.

I feel like FFX is carried almost entirely by it's combat system. And then they never used it again.

          Anonymous

Maybe a fanboy response but I think X is a 10/10. Story is fantastic, music is incredible, the whole game carries a theme of letting go of the past which is also carried by all the individual stories within the party therefore justifying their presence rather than just being there for the sake of filling a class role, worldbuilding feels believable and consistent.
But also yes, I think X's turn based combat is the best of its kind. Being able to see the attack order and how different moves will affect it adds a lot more strategy than leaving speed as this invisible stat that can completely frick with you.

          Anonymous

The world and the worldbuilding are nice.
The combat system is pretty good as you said. Which is important because that’s like 80% of the game.
          The story is good.
The characters are fine at worst. Except Kimahri but he’s not a bad character just underutilized.
Again though, I didn’t play the other games so the story and the characters might be much better in those.

The cutscenes in XIII are much more obnoxious than the one in X. It feels like it interrupts you every 5 minutes for mundanities, whereas FFX's cutscene feel more on point.
The bosses are pretty good and memorable as well, when XIII is just those machines

What a moronic idea for a sequel. You might as well bring back Seymour, Auron, and Shuyin while you're at it and just make literally everything prior pointless.

Any sequel to FFX is inherently moronic on arrival. X-2 might've worked well as a sort of epilogue to Yuna's arc as she learns to let go of Tidus and learns what she wants to do now that she's not a sacrificial lamb. But even then it didn't really work because it got bogged down with too many ideas without properly developing any.
Someone just stop Nojima from ever touching FF again.

      Anonymous

X-2 was an experiment. They wanted to do an expanded universe for VII, including directly prequels and sequels, which they hadn't done for FF yet at the time. They didn't want to risk ruining VII's legacy so they took X, popular and recent enough to spark interest, but not their golden goose that was VII, gave it a small budget so they had to re-use most of the assets, and then gauged if the fanbase would go into revolt over a direct sequel. Reaction was mixed but must have been good enough to greenlight all the VII games they started making immediately after.

        Anonymous

Also of note, they deliberately changed the combat system to see if that would be well received, as many of the VII games didn't use the same combat system as VII itself. As X-2's combat system was very well received, that very well may have been what convinced them they could change the formula up and experiment.

Tonal shift from a world filled with hopelessness and death to one where people are realizing that their world has been completely changed and most of what they always knew no longer applies and how they struggle to adjust to that. Yuna has a similar journey as she tries to adjust from a life where she was destined to die to bring a few years of peace, to now being considered the world's greatest hero for ending the existential threat of Sin and exposing the world religion as having been working to keep the spiral of death status quo running smoothly.

What made X-2 happen? What was the cultural climate like? The reaction? I wasn't really into Final Fantasy at the time.

      Anonymous

      It happened because

X-2 was an experiment. They wanted to do an expanded universe for VII, including directly prequels and sequels, which they hadn't done for FF yet at the time. They didn't want to risk ruining VII's legacy so they took X, popular and recent enough to spark interest, but not their golden goose that was VII, gave it a small budget so they had to re-use most of the assets, and then gauged if the fanbase would go into revolt over a direct sequel. Reaction was mixed but must have been good enough to greenlight all the VII games they started making immediately after.

Also of note, they deliberately changed the combat system to see if that would be well received, as many of the VII games didn't use the same combat system as VII itself. As X-2's combat system was very well received, that very well may have been what convinced them they could change the formula up and experiment.

The jpop music of X-2 led to Gackt being hired to do voicework in a couple games. The reaction was largely the 'What the frick is this?' that we get now, but the positive reactions to the combat led to the similar free-wheeling ATB style of most FF games that came after.

FFX was the first Final Fantasy or even a game of a huge group of people, whose first console was the PS2. They were then devastated by the ending and bombarded Square-Enix to fix it, while for the rest of us it was a normal bittersweet ending, that Final Fantasy almost always has. Also we thought FFX killed Final Fantasy, it was so bad, so most of us bailed on the series. The general public thought it was the best game ever, because of its graphics and full voice acting.

The game was so popular they started making a sequel, and there was positive response from Japan about the Eternal Calm video. There was no outcry about the ending, no-one demanding a sequel, it was created because X sold so well, and despite what that post says, was well loved. It's only this shithole that i ever see people saying they dropped off FF because of X.

what really tickes me off is people pretending like final fantasy was ever this super open-ended oldschool RPG when in reality the series was streamlined from day 1
obviously there's a difference between overworld/no overworld or VA/no VA but there's so much pretentiousness in claiming there is a huge leap in design philosophy between FFVI and FFX it's ridiculous
FFX has an amazing story, incredible graphics, an immersive and iconic setting, great characters with a lot of depth, one of the best OSTs of the franchise, a perfect iteration of turn based combat and a shitton of side content for minmaxers like me.
