Final Fantasy XII

I’m at the Ogir-Yensa Sandsea right now, my characters are level 9 and they’re dying very fast to all the enemies in this area, am I too weak for this area? Do I need to grind more? I don’t have enough money to buy better armor, nor the required license slot for them, did I frick up? This game is too hard…

You playing original or zodiac age? Anyways you should be like lvl 15 in there.
Also you should steal a lot and sell the drops to make money in this game. Set up gambits for your thief something like
    1: Enemy HP < 90% - Attack
    2: Enemy HP = 100% - Steal
and use the thief as your leader. Everyone else should have "leader's target - Attack" in addition to all the buff and curative gambits. This way you'll attempt to steal once from every enemy you encounter, then switch to hitting them since your party lowers it below 90% after you steal.

Zodiac Age. My gambits are like “Use first aid if HP is below 50%”, “Use cure if HP is below 30%” and “Attack enemy targeting your allies”.

First Aid only works on HP Critical so that gambit will just result in a failure every time. What Jobs you using? Foebreaker, Monk and Uhlan slap shit early on, they get lots of HP and lots of Battle Lore very easily. You can go to the Guild Hall to respec your job boards and licenses if you want to.

          Vaan - Knight
          Penelo - White mage
          Balthier - Machinist
          Fran - Archer
          Basch - Bushi
          Ashe - Time Battlemage

I think I fricked up on the jobs, something tells me Ashe would be better as a white mage while Basch should be a knight.

It's great when you get Hastega, but until you have its core spells it is worse than the other options. Changing Ashe to Uhlan should net a lot better results for less work.

I believe Time Battlemage is a good supplement to other jobs, since it has green magic, time magic, heavy armor and swiftness augments. It should pair well with Knight, Uhlan or Samurai, but isn't great on it's own.

Should I keep Basch as bushi? Is Basch (Bushi/Monk), Ashe (Uhlan) and Fran (Red Mage) a good main party?

Sounds good, Foebreaker might be a bit better than Bushi early on because samurai swords' damage scales with both magic power and phys power, and you're not gonna be good at both until you get to dual class

Samurai/Monk is very strong, and if you want to use just three characters for the rest of the game then Uhlan/Time Mage and Red Mage/Black Mage along with Samurai/Monk will carry you far. Maybe make Balthier a Machinist/White Mage in case you ever need to pull a healer out.

You can at least reset your license points at the hunt master in Zodiac age. But you have to unlock it first. Level 9 is far too low for Sandsea. Personally when I play 12 I only use and level 3 characters until after Raithwall (where you are going to over the Sandsea)

Ah yes FF12, I remember playing that game a lot, its defined by repeatedly grinding through areas via backtracking to ensure you gain the money you need, either from drops or steals. If you ever say "I won't backtrack cause it will take too long" then you aren't gonna make it.

            >it'd take too long to go back
            You aren't gonna make it.

Gambits are supposed to mean you can tolerate twice the grinding on average since the game mostly plays itself anyways.

You should try chain killing the same kind of enemy, preferably in an earlier area, the higher your chain gets the more loot they drop for you to sell.

I mostly played the og vanilla game but I feel Zodiac Age is a bit more forgiving.

theres a good little grind spot in the lhusu mines on the second bridge i think, you can chain farm the skeletons there easily to get some levels and they also drop good loot and some gear

in general when you feel like main story progress is too hard you could go and try to do some hunts for some gear or money

Anon, I don't know what else to tell you but "git gud."

I'm ESL myself and I love how they wrote this games dialogue. Characters like Vaan and Penelo, street urchins, literally use simpler language to denote their social background, while people like Basch, Balthier and Ashe you elevated, sometimes flowery language, since they come from a higher social class. Writing is not quite on the level of the Legacy of Kain series, but still very kino.

The game gets easier when you unlock 5 or so gambit slots, along with some specific extra gambit options.

Play on PC and turn up the speed 5x with cheat engine and grind lower level mobs by entering and exiting the zones. You can do this while watching youtube or w/e.

I have played this multiple times, on all available versions(PS2 original, IZJS, Zodiac Age) and never once thought it was difficult outside of optional bosses, and maybe a few curveballs like the Mateus and Cid fights.
I strongly recommend reading the in-game guide about weapon types to know what affects damage and if possible start boss fights(or even late game encounters) with buffs applied.
