Interesting. It's not the first time their company and others were kept afloat by 1 reasonable product when their vanity projects kept failing.

Hopefully they'll take it as a message to stop designing sciFi KPOP shit and start going back to soulful games like Crystal Chronicles. I miss chibi square Enix.

that game was shit, if you wanted to level up a secondary character that wasnt part of your main team, it was literally impossible, the art style was the only good thing about that game.

I had a friend who was a final fantasy fanboy on the playstation, and freaked out when he discovered i had CC on my gamecube, i let him play it, he was shocked about 15mins in about how shit it was compared to his precious ff7+8 etc.

That being said if i still had the patience for turn based games i'd love a remastering of final fantasy tactics advance, that game was amazing.

It's a 10/10 game in terms of story, art, music, characters, locations, everything except gameplay. Yes it was shit. But I still love it.

Anons hype it up because it's atypical from your usual FF game, but growing up on it as a kid it was more tedious than anything. The world-building is fantastic, but progression is obnoxious because you can potentially soft-lock your entire playthrough if you don't fully understand every single mechanic by the end of early-game so you kind of have to use a guide to find the right gear, magic combinations, food, etc.

Plus the fact that the main antagonist dies in the lamest way mid-game always left a bad taste in my mouth.

The game is solid, but it became a runaway hit thanks to a bunch of coincidences that helped it along.
WoW started shitting the bed majorly with a truly shitty expansion followed by complete draught of content around the same time XIV was being praised for putting out its best expansion yet, Shadowbringers. Everyone was talking about how it had the best story in a MMO ever, one of the best in any FF game, etc etc.
Then the Blizzard scandals started coming out in the open, costing them more players and putting them in full frantic damage control mode, diverting resources from coming out of the aforementioned content drought to instead rework and remove features across their game to virtue signal when, ironically, doing nothing and just working on putting out content would've probably made the entire debacle last less than a month in the public eye; just ask Riot Games.
Then there was all that bullshit with streamers quitting WoW to play XIV, which is actually something normies consider when making their own decisions on what to play.
And finally the next WoW expansion aped Shadowbringers so blatantly that it was basically an admission of defeat.
XIV is good. Could be better in a million different ways, but it's still a good game as it is now. Still, it would not be the top dog of the market if its only serious competition hadn't pretty much nuked itself out of relevance.

As someone who saw it in action, WoWs usual strategy for competitors is the same thing fortnite does today. If they have a new, interesting mechanic that receives praise, copy it. But one of the draws for FF14 for a lot of people is having a main story the game actually forces you to play that centers your character as the protagonist, and WoW can't restructure itself to copy that. In fact, they ran in the opposite direction as hard as possible to let you skip any expansion you didn't want to play except for the current one.

This is what all worthwhile games do. Even Super Mario Bros. and Tetris stole shit from other games. Game design has always been derivative, and that's a good thing.

                >Wow adds that
                >FFXIV adds plenty of new hairstyles every few patches
                >Wow restructured their character customizer but still restricted hair styles behind race and gender for no reason when ever character should have 80 options
                >FFXIV DOH/DOL professions are so engaging that players can literally play the entire game as just a chef
                >Wow still ignores professions
                >FFXIV has dungeon roulettes cycle through every Dundon ever made to help new players level and to keep old content relevant
                >Wow introduces timewalking but can't figure out how to reintroduce old content
                >FFXIV raids are less about challenge and more about story and awesome music
                >Wow gatekept it's fricking story with a weekly grind that required 20 hours of farming just to see a single shitty cutscene.

Not that guy but let me add that one of the best strengths that FFXIV has over wow is the care it has in making sure old content is still accessible and relevant. Wow is designed to make you completely forget everything before the latest expac and chose the ridiculous decision to make leveling a time sink, and every expansion just a contrivance.
Meanwhile every dungeon is still played in FFXIV and every expansion needs to be played in order of release. Nothing is ever irrelevant or forgotten. There's much more mileage in the game.

In WoW you can queue for a leveling dungeon significantly faster than in FFXIV and players that queue up with you don't lose their abilities. It's great.

Having the freedom to level how you want is generally good game design in an mmo. Players tend to resent having their hands held and being treated like morons.

I can't think of a bigger way of treating them like morons than lining them up for carnival rides for cheap gear as the path of least resistance to get to the redundant endgame grind with their buddies since there is no decent incentive to play with anyone who isn't at max level.

There's no incentive to play with anyone who isn't at cap in FFXIV either. Roulette rewards are dogshit and they take forever. You can do hunts for tomes and materia in a fraction of the time.

is completely right when they say that leveling was just a contrivance when all ways said and done. Dungeon lines are just throwing your hands up in the air and admitting that "yep, we don't care about starter content either. Lets put you on the express lane to the rat race."

anon WoW offers far more incentive to play with other players before cap because questing is actually tailored for multiplayer.

FFXIV quests are designed as a single-player railroad, and trying to do the MSQ with friends sucks absolute ass.

WoW doesn't have this issue because you can just spam dungeons to level your character, so that's all anyone ever does, and dungeons are always populated.

In FFXIV there are 10 hour stretches between every dungeon in the MSQ, and roulettes are mostly unfun and pointless, so queues are shit as a leveling character. The only dungeons with fast queues are Endwalker dungeons.

                >They give tons of EXP
Irrelevant at cap, and leveling characters usually just spam the highest level dungeon after doing their one roulette a day. In WoW random dungeons are always better XP than specific dungeons.
                > and you need to grind roulettes for endgame gear

This is actually the same shit that killed TERA. They would get new updates and remove a shitload of dungeons/ gear/ items from the game. Then they streamlined the leveling process and removed PvP before level cap. The game play experience just kept getting smaller and smaller in scope with every update until the game finally shut down all together. I don't know what the devs managed to do in the end because by that point I had long since lost interest, but it looks like they just kept shitting out new race/gender locked classes. If you look at the parallels to WoW's design it's quite alarming.

Definitely releasing Arcane almost right after had something to do with that.
If only Blizzard had any recent IPs with booming popularity at the time and a rich lore whose gameplay exists completely divested of the story and therefore any well-handled adaptation could make for great television if they just cared a little bit about it and could plan a couple of years in advance to capitalize on its success…
A good Overwatch animated show would've allowed Blizzard to no-sell the scandals as easily as Riot did. Fortunately for all people involved, Blizzard is run by diversity hires that didn't even plan ahead for Overwatch the game, much less any expanded universe thing, and now they are a joke.

It's easy to play, it looks nice enough, it runs well, and it guarantees a solid playerbase foundation from final fantasy fans. It also didn't compromise itself to chase the elusive WoW "endgame". It became popular pretty much during ARR, despite the hurr durr arr bad memes, and Heavensward solidified its' popularity. But the reason you didn't know about it is because Ganker and most gaming forums have/had a WoW bias. I remember all my friends being hooked on XIV all the way back in 2014 already.

Watching a lot the newcomers playing through ARR really threw me for a loop. Almost all of them enjoyed it and it flew in the face of all the "ARR bad" memes I've been fed for years.

It pulled a decent amount of players in on the revival due to latent interest in FF. There were a few die hard fans willing to give the game a chance again.

It garnered some extra interest when it managed to be an interesting single player game as well, along with a cohesive world where the lore made since and didn't feel completely disconnected. Still, post-ARR easily put off a lot of players because it was somewhat content light for the sheer amount of padding and unlike 2.0, it would be quite a while before the story gave a payoff again.

And then 3.0 hit and managed to actually have a great story to the point you could consider it on par with older FF games, which surprised the hell out of a lot of people. Post-3.0 was once again slow, but people were still riding the high of the MSQ, so several stuck around. Stormblood had a ton of hype going for it after that riding off of 3.0, and while people generally say it wasn't as strong, it was still miles better than what most MMOs were doing.

Didn't help that WoW was busy shitting the bed and getting worse with every expansion at this time, XIV gave people an MMO to flock to to get their fix and had the dual benefit of attracting people who weren't interested in MMOs to begin with. WoW kept chasing the casual dollar, not realizing the "casuals" of our generation were women interested in a second life style game instead of dudebros who barely touched video games--they had already found their niche in other games.

You're right in that the combat is better. Literally any combat is better than WoW-style skill spam combat. The normalization of it was the worst thing that ever happened to mmos. Vindictus already mogged it's combat brutally and they were released in the same year.

That being said New World has the most bland fantasy setting in recent memory from an MMO. Ffxiv actually has final fantasy lore, good characters, a good story, a good art style, and a good soundtrack going for it. New World has none of that and that's why it can't actually mog FFXIV. It's a commercial tested, safe and soulless conveyer belt fad game that lost the majority of its player base in the first 6 months. That's why FFXIV is the most played mmo in the world right now and Amazon mmos aren't.

Ah so you've never played the game, got it. Majority of MSQ gameplay is quite literally going from npc to npc. Why not complain about the amount of walking and warping you do? Oh right you've never played it.

          >inb4 everyone looks uglier because character models are reworked to be more realistic
During the stream where they were talking about the graphic update they specifically made fun of the concept of making it too realistic. They showed this horrible "realistic" render and laughed at it, continuing on to clarify that they don't want such a thing because it's beyond fugly.

      It's getting one Soon™.
You should be worried about it being utterly underwhelming, though, as I am. In the very same stream where they announced the graphical update they also said about a dozen times to temper your expectations of it.

        Anonymous

They said temper your expectations in the sense that it's not gonna look like Red Dead Redemption 2 or something big like that, which is fair considering that if tehy wanted to make an upgrade that big you wold need a brand new engine and perhaps a brand new MMO.

I know this isn't the best example, but FFXIV needs something like New Genesis, the game needs to be remade because the spaghetti code can't hold on much longer

NGS made all old models and textures horribly ugly though. It would have been better to just make them separate games in the first place due to how the new graphics engine completely ruined base PSO2.

You're deranged dude, take a break from the internet. Microsoft censors equally as hard because they're both following the same censorship standards as they're both based out of the US. Microsoft cancelling Gal Gun is the go to example in this scenario when they should have released it to stick it to Sony. But they didn't because their censorship is the exact same.

Go boot up solitaire and look at what a fricking mess it is now. Microsoft has ads everywhere, daily quests, and they want you to buy a subscription. Microsoft buying anything is the least desirable option, unless you really hate that company, in which case something like Microsoft buying ActiBlizz is fricking based because ActiBlizz deserves to fail. Square Enix is still pumping out a lot of quality AA titles while everyone else is chasing AAA garbage, they do not deserve to fail.

The team Asano games like Triangle Strategy, Octopath, and Bravely Default. There's Neo TWEWY, Stranger of Paradise, The SaGa remasters and then we're getting a Tactics Ogre Remaster, Valkyrie Elysium(With a Lenneth remaster) and a new Star Ocean this year. There's that new Diofield Chroncle SRPG coming out too, they're revitalizing the SRPG genre by themselves by putting out 3 new ones this year alone.

Those are just off the top of my head, Square at least is diversifying and not putting all their eggs in the AAA basket. They have their mainline FF titles and that shit looking Forspoken game upcoming and that's about it.

I actually met the brand manager of a video game you might've heard of. She was cool and smart as frick but didn't really understand the appeal of video games nor was she immersed in the culture.

And from there I learned that most people who manage games are just like that. Gen X or millenials who mostly watch Netflix trash and rely entirely off marketing research that gives them wrong impressions. Normalgays basically.

It's not like the old days when games were made by nerds who were passionate and creative. Now it's corporations ran by stock investors who only hired people based on resumes and business experience. It's why so many games are samey and mismanaged. We've become too corporate.

Tell me how I'm wrong. The base game is supposedly already done and most of the current work is towards the boss battles and polishing. Shit like that is what has plagued them as they continue to insist on spending 100x more on cinematics and movies than they do only anything relevant to gameplay. The summon battles don't even look good as it takes away from what they are trying to achieve with the core gameplay.

At least in XIV, they try give you the fantasy of playing within those summon cutscenes you used to watch.

They already said they're bumping up the min spec with the next expac, so at the most I'm expecting no option to use the older textures, which will mean a VRAM bump needed.

And the reason for no older textures would be for them to keep the game's filesize down, which they've been rather decent at relative to every other modern MMO. Especially since they have no means of a dynamic install or streaming assets on-the-fly as needed (which they could have done since everything is instanced in the game)

Someone already mentioned this, but mobiles pay 30% to apple/google. SE takes 100% of subs and cash shops.

As a gacha degenerate the thing about SE's gachas is, while having Nintendo-tier UI polish, are some of the most anti-consumer gacha games on the market.

Like their most successful gacha FFBE is an unironically worse version of Brave Frontier should speak volumes of how badly SE fricked up in the gacha market.

ff14 troons are as blind as the moronic journo in OP pic because it literally shows mobile made more than MMO did so mobile is carrying SE, also DQ10 makes more in japan than ff14 does snd then some.
