The games have made it pretty clear that the Hashashin that Altair was a part of were not the first Assassins. The legacy has been driven to near extinction and rebuilt in some other form for millennia.

Basim should have been the protag of the AC Valhalla game too. Eivor was a boring character who was basically just a biker in charge of a biker gang running around causing chaos. The Assassins subplot was shoehorned in and felt inconsequential and tacked on. It would have been way more interesting if they'd gone the 13th Warrior route and made Basim an Arab fish out of water in Europe with all the interesting plot points that would arise from that, with him learning about the culture forming alliances, and trying to stop the Templars from influencing Alfred. The Raven Clan storyline was stupid and gay.

They should've went with the original Layla trilogy plan and made it about Roman Empire instead. Most impressive buildings in Valhalla are literally from Roman Empire anyways. Otherwise medieval England is boring.

        Anonymous

How climbable setting is doesn't really matter and hasn't at all since the nu-AC trilogy began because they totally lobotomized the parkour system. It's especially bad because that change came after Unity which was the parkouring peak of the entire franchise.

          Anonymous

Doesn't really have to be about climbing buildings but atmosphere. Medieval England consisted of little villages, villages built around cathedrals, villages built around Roman ruins and villages but Viking style etc. Roman era would've had 10 times more variety in terms of architecture and scenery. Odyssey was 10 times more interesting in comparison.

    >always enjoyed obtaining the optional outfits in old ACs, usually had a story relevance or a cool aesthetic
    >start AC Origins, they all look like dogshit compared to the standard and have no story relevance
I'm glad upgrading your gear at least updates your appearance but why are most of them so over the top, or just more boring versions of the default robes. At least Hidden Ones has a cool "canon" outfit
Also whoever decided that they should have a toggle for the hood instead of having it as an additional option compared to the auto-hood for restricted areas should be shot

      Anonymous

I always found the whole focus on itemization so weird and a pointless step towards turning games into RPGs according to Ubisoft. Old games were spot-on with "buy better gear for higher armor/more health" AND it changed appearance.

        Anonymous

It's weird, maybe I'm just being autistic about it, but I've never liked using "non-canon" costumes in games like AC. Probably because the amount of work out into making a carefully crafted character design and then just throwing it away for some shit like an Anubis head seems pointless and looks pretty bad.
From what I hear about Odyssey and Valhalla it's even worse.
AC2-Brotherhood did it pretty well, the armour of Altair is a sidequest but when you start playing Brotherhood it's what Ezio is wearing because that entire sequence is canon. Compare that to Basim running

As long as I can pick a costume and keep the gear stats I'm good. That's what Unity did. Or you could go full min n match mode.

I know, but I wish his outfit would evolve with the story in addition to just upgrades, especially since this is before the founding of the creed/hidden ones. Like I said the only "real" story relevant outfit is the Hidden Ones robes. Maybe don't start with the yellow sash, Aya gives you it or something like when she cuts your hair.
The closest you get is that in the flashback Bayak doesnt have his additional details.

Valhalla has some nice assassin robe sets that are better than the default starting armor

          Anonymous

This, it feels weird and wrong to not play with the default armor/skin/hairstyle cause you'll stand out in the cutscenes compared to everyone else, and some of the armors weren't even created properly, the textures are too low resolution during cutscenes.
I picked the armor ability I wanted then slapped the Raven Clan skin over it. Used the classic hairstyle and the raven face tattoo that darkens the eyes. Also played male, of course. Only used the hidden ones robes for the city arcs.
For the final upcoming Vinland DLC, I've put the eyepatch from Ragnarok on Eivor since he's finally accepting he is Odin in his own way.

The open world style and expanding the game to 150+ hours, then supporting the game post-launch with updates, events, and daily quests for premium currency, seems to be the goal for Ubisoft. Without those, they wouldn't be able to hold the player's attention beyond the main quest. It's a single player game built off MMO philosophy, and it likely has been a great financial success for them.

I really wanna be invested in the modern day stuff but not pacing out 20 emails, 4 different guides each with subsections, 6 voice clips with Layla's bland ass VA/writing and then at least 30 more pieces of flavour text that might contain something important at some point really kills that momentum. Cool that it gives you the option to just read it all but man, that's a lot.
Kinda glad they're splitting out the modern day/past stuff tbh, just hope they tie up the Basim stuff well in the Final Chapter

It's going to be built off the back of the RPG trilogy's systems, going by how they've shown camels and eagles again.
The big question will be how much smoother the parkour will be, and if they're going to replace the combat with the combo style from the earlier games, or just keep the current hack and slash but change kill animations and special abilities.

It should, but we don't know yet if Mirage is truly a new mainline game or just the AC: Rogue of Valhalla. If they're not retooling the system in a bigger way to replace the Origins system, they might just be speeding up animations the same way Valhalla slowed them down. World design will likely be more important in how moving around feels. They're bringing back parkour ingredients like the corner swing, so that's a good sign.

Nah, they've put 15 years into creating this mythology of precursors, assassins, templars, and an ancient shadow war.
They even got a guy to invent a proper language for the Isu which can be translated, and the early games had plenty of secret messages for the player to decipher, references to conspiracies that weren't even that popular at the time like the mayan calendar all the way back in AC1. It's the charm of the franchise. If they just go to historical games, they'll falter, much like how Valhalla's storyline is complete shit outside of the small revelations we get about the evolution of the templars, and the seventh method of salvation.
Truly, the game is best experienced when you're alone and exploring historical sites. Walking Hadrian's wall at night had more soul than all of the region questlines combined.
