you can't pay for the kind of Marketing ER got, same as the Joker movie, this game was hype incarnate, i nearly bought a copy and i HATE dark souls style combat, i just wanted to support a AAA dev that made a complete game with loads of decent content and actual soul in it, without MTX or pay 2 win bullshit either. Thats a fricking miracle in this day and age.

Imo the problem with Dark Souls is that they're leaning more and more into the combat when it was never all that interesting to begin with. Exploration and lore are much more engaging. And while Elden Ring pushed exploration through its open world it still pushes the combat angle really hard through these copypasted bosses

      >Exploration

      >and lore
      Absolutely fricking not

Dark Souls is about the combat, but it's the combat with exploration and level design. You take a shield hallow and put him in a square room, that's boring. You take the same shield hallow and put him in a tight walkway with open air to your left and a rat that will attack you from behind if you don't kill it first or take to long getting past his shield, and not that's interesting.

The problem with Elden Ring is all those enemies just sitting around in what are essentially empty spaces with no level design to back them up or add interesting dynamics. That's why the actual castles and other areas are much better.
A fire drake that just one shots you in an open world would be gay dumb shit. A drake guarding a bridge and gate that you can slip past with patience and the right timing to get onto the bridge and then have them fly away so you can get the loot safely is interesting.

        Good explanation
I couldn't help shake this feeling of boredom in Elden Ring when I would happen upon a group of enemies or a camp or whatever out in the open, it never felt interesting as my first time playing Dark Souls where I was constantly observing my surroundings and being cautious

Many of the encounters in DeS and DaS seem like they were deliberately designed to be unique with thought to how the player would initially react. Most ambushes for instance work this way, drawing your focus one way while an enemy comes from another. They were designed like classic Doom and megawad encounters, using enemy variety and the environment to create unique challenges - which makes sense since at the end of the day 90% of the enemies in Souls are melee guys that walk at you or ranged guys that launch projectiles, really no different than some imps and pinkies. Of course they still had fights that are just "some dudes in a room" but you need those so the dark knight at the end of a long hallway with a hollow waiting to ambush from a dark side room stands out.

I agree that with ER, most of the encounters seem rather thoughtless. They're challenging, but thoughtless beyond ensuring the right enemies are in the right environment. I can remember and run through pretty much all of DaS1's early and mid game in my head, but ER is mostly one giant blur of different set pieces and environments.

I imagine there's a lot more people working on level design and the directors and producers aren't getting as involved as they used to, since the overall formula is so standardized now. A lot of filler people who worked on DaS 2 or 3 and are now being allowed to work with minimal supervision from upper management.

Actually a really good description of why ER is so shit. Walking into any of the 50 dungeons and its just box room after box room of the same 3 enemies in all 50 dungeons.

Elden Ring doing zombies everywhere again was lazy as hell and made no sense, and really does suck as it's supposed to be a different title.
I'll give you concise quests and coherent lore, but the zombies were lame.
Also yes, the open world was very lame.

its their brand and I accept it. I understand if people are tired of it but i also understand that they are known for this setting. I don't play Mario if I want a souls-like experience

          Anonymous

Yeah but they could have at least tried. They have multiple sections where they actually say that the guards/soldiers are like real people but then they are actually zombies. That's below Fromsoft expectations.

Not him, but Erdtree/grace is fricking up death cycle. Doesn't really matter, you can always easily make some stupid lore reason for gameplay purposes.

Also I personally I enjoyed the open world more than most "living ones" due to how exploration was handled, the zone design. It was more of "make your own adventure", very open ended.

I personally think they wanted to help replayability - you wouldn't do all the bosses, caves and shit in single run, but you'd take different paths and explore differently, so the repeats wouldn't be as bad.
Of course that's not how a lot of people play open world games.

          Anonymous

          >Doesn't really matter, you can always easily make some stupid lore reason for gameplay purposes.
Yeah but at the same time they act like there are normal guards and soldiers. It's dumb. yes they can always write dumb lore explanations, but they also kind of fricked that up. It's like they wanted their to be more normal friendly npcs in their open world but then just ran out of time and said "frick it, zombies again." That's what it honestly felt like, which isn't my impression from the other games.

          >Also I personally I enjoyed the open world more than most "living ones"
That's a side point since it just shouldn't have been open world, or at least, they should have tackled something much more condensed and worked on each area more.
The other games are very replayable comparatively, so if that was their intent, I don't think they succeeded.

            Anonymous

I agree that it should have been more condensed, but I don't think it hampers replayability by itself.
Issue is the amount of content and it's easy to burn out - I played bit over 100 hours in 2 weeks since release and needed a 2 week break after.

Though I think that "brevity is the soul of wit" and all that.

              Anonymous

imo Elden Ring is great the first time when everything is still unknown because you actually explore, find loot and naturally get runes.
Any subsequent run you know 90% of the caves are useless for your build so you end up just rushing the 5 specific spots you need but then you end up underleveled and lacking in resources, so you need to farm and that defeats the points of having the knowledge to rush a build.

                Anonymous

I think that's actually to it's benefit - you can just do what you want or need.
And that's still assuming you explored everything on first run - you need only 2 great runes for Leyndell and endgame.

            >they act like there are normal guards and soldiers.
There are. They aren't friendly with you because you're tarnished and because basically everything outside the walls of their forts and camps is turbo-fricked. It's a post-apocalypse setting not Skyrim.

If you want to tell me that they smell the bad juju on me so they decided that protecting the castle is not as important as committing suicide and that they should kill me so I can't save the commander, who doesn't hate me, because he's a "designated NPC" then I call bullshit.

Same. I just love Elden Ring. I take my time, explore every inch of the map, kill every enemy I encounter. So many people just run from point A to point B and run right passed enemies. I've lingered at certain graces to farm enemies for their weapons because I love trying out all the various weapons and weapon arts.

Just last night I killed Mohg, The Omen. I am just about finished with the Leyndell Sewers. I am just about to venture into the Mountaintops of the Giants. I have yet to reach the Forbidden Lands, Consecrated Snowfield, Miquella's Haligtree, and Crumbling Farum Azula.

ER isn't mediocre, it's an 8/10 at worst and would've won goty on plenty of other years. It's just extremely derivative and no more worth the hype than previous titles. DeS was ground breaking, DaS refined itself, but the next like decade of games have just been baby steps forward.

In the last like 4 or 5 games all that's been added or changed was:
                >jumping, jump attacks
                >a grapple hook, then removed
                >wall jumping, then removed
                >mantling, edge shimmying, whatever hugging a wall along a tight cliff is called, then removed
                >deathblows, then removed
                >a horse with a double jump and mounted combat
                >ashes of war
                >spirit ashes
                >guard counter
                >a map and compass, marker system
                >open world

This is over 10 years of games for only 7 major gameplay additions, 1 of which is just a different form of travel, and another a couple UI elements, and 1 which doesn't really change gameplay much and probably won't be present in later titles.

A few months ago when every other thread was an ER thread, some anon was talking about how the devs gave the bosses all these cool anime moves and flashy attacks, but all you have is like a jump attack, an ash of war skill, and lightshows that are still just you tapping R1/R2 every couple seconds.

My biggest non-combat-related complaint is how the world is completely static.
The overworld literally never changes in any way and even legacy dungeons at best have locked doors or ladders you kick down.

I still don't understand why people hate him. The musical and visual presentation almost brought me to tears as a sperg for cosmic horror shit. He's literally the "alien" behind all the "gold" stuff throughout the setting, thee one who essentially enslaved Marika and is growing the Erdtree's strength and domination for an unknown reason. I felt obligated to play it because the "souls" games are my fave franchise in gaming. It was impressive for the first few hours, then it was repetitive and felt like a slog to get through. I was just making a checklist of bosses to defeat. Once I completed the game I tried replaying with a different character. I couldn't do it. There was nothing to hold my interest. I've played through most of the older games repeatedly: Demon's Souls six or seven times, Dark Souls four times, Dark Souls 2 three times, Sekiro four times, and so on. They generally feel comfy to get back into. Elden Ring is about as entertaining as doing dishes and picking up my dog's shit in the backyard. More content does not equate to a better game. I personally believe it's a stretch to give this game more than a 5/10. I'm saying this as a longtime fan of their games.

yeah it really felt empty and lifeless. it was basically a regular souls game but with an unnecessary open world spliced in between major locations.
    >No towns with NPCs
    >No factions of any sort
    >The ranni questline is the only one that significantly affects your playthrough, so your playthrough is either ranni or no ranni, the rest of the endings are almost identical
    >The actual NPCs in the game are like a hundred miles apart from each other and are basically in random locations aside from the ones in the hub area
I wish someone would make a mod to make the game more like Demon's Souls, just letting you teleport to the major locations in a level-by-level format instead of having a dishonest open world.

My hope for the DLC is that it's a series of back to back legacy dungeons with good bosses to round each area out, basically like a Dark Souls style campaign that you access via a portal in the open world.

Good idea but ideally each "section" should also be directly accessible from its respective zone.

I wasn't really bothered by his projectiles, just sprint sideways, by this point in the game I was lvl 125 and doing so much damage that I didn't need to catch up to him often in the first place

Yeah it's not hard, just tedious imo.

      Good explanation
I couldn't help shake this feeling of boredom in Elden Ring when I would happen upon a group of enemies or a camp or whatever out in the open, it never felt interesting as my first time playing Dark Souls where I was constantly observing my surroundings and being cautious

Ironically I found it better at launch when it still had the bug where overworld enemies would randomly go invisible on older GPUs. I treated every camp as an ambush.

How? Ive been just wondering around the place, even if you just follow grace all the time you still have to go through alot of shit to get from a major boss to another.

I'm a spergino who really just likes cool combat and the much more flashy spells and moves in this one compared to anything else From besides maybe Sekiro made this totally ok for me

I like dark souls combat so I don't mind that every place is littered with enemies. I think it's stupid that they never do anything really interesting with it, though.

      >fort with a sane general that gives you a sidequest
      >all of his soldiers are insane and he doesn't even acknowledge this
come tf on, this is silly and a wasted opportunity. Imagine a two way battle between hollows and sane soldiers, and even being able to summon or invade there. Would've been a really cool pvp spot.

It doesn't even have any cool mysterious weird places like Ash Lake either. Caelid is the most interesting place and it's basically just red Blight Town without much of a Z axis.

would've been cool to wander into some cave and find Mileena there or something. WOULD'VE BEEN COOL IF SHE TALKED TO YOU MORE.

For me, at least, it still somewhat delivers on the souls series promise of not overly hand-holding and railroading the player. I can load Elden Ring, start a game, run past the tutorial, and once I hit the exit to the hero's grave I can more or less just frick about anywhere I can reach on that horse. There are some exceptions, but few enough I can live with it.

Even if the game overall isn't a masterpiece, the ability to just play without having to sit and wait on tutorials, dialog, and cutscenes counts a lot for me.

And besides, reviewers are paid shills and people love jumping on hype trains. Give it a few years and games journalists will be writing about how much of a letdown ER really was in hindsight. Same shit, different butthole.

Holy shit this, I am a massive ADHD frick and I hate how games basically make you click through tutorials and movies to play, it turns me off instantly so I love From games for just being combat sandboxes essentially, it satisfies something deep within me.

I didn't bother making a caster until those guides on how to become OP in 10 minutes started coming out. You don't even need to do everything they say to get a caster going like that. Otherwise you're stuck with lame ass pebble for however long.

    >>It's literally just an empty (but beautiful) open world boss rush game
I'm a little butthurt over this. I have like 160 hours on one character (granted a lot of that is pvp) but like a third of my normal gametime at least was exploration. And because I was worried about missing out on something important, like a quest NPC or a cool boss or something, I spent way more time frickin around and exploring when most of the time I just wanted to get on with the game. I spent so much time wandering around aimlessly and doing nothing productive that by the time I finished the game I was burnt out and didn't even care to start another character, something that's never happened for me before.

And like 75% of my exploration was pointless! It was just for crafting materials most of the time, for recipes I never found, or some spell or weapon I couldn't use. I think I would've preferred regular level design like Dark Souls 1. DaS1 is fairly linear but there's like 3 different routes you can take right at the beginning of DaS1, and you can do basically the whole first half of the game backwards if you try hard enough. They could've just done that, but with even more branching paths and shortcuts and whatever.

I don't get why people say elden ring is beautiful. The graphics are just average... They're fine but nothing special. Do people just love the generic grimdark fantasy aesthetic?

Exploration is so boring in ER. It is all combat oriented and there aren’t any mechanics that let you interact with the world around you in an intriguing or creative way and the combat wasn’t even interesting to begin with in it unlike Sekiro which was developed alongside ER. Such a shame really. The world just feels dead and empty but not in a good way. They should have leaned more towards Sekiro with it’s combat. They should have added questlines that effect each other instead of adding boring and cryptic “quests” that barely worked in an open world setting. They should have added interesting hub areas with npcs that have unique secrets and quests. They should have added interesting puzzles or over world secrets instead of unimaginative riddles. There was so much potential for ER but none of it was delivered. It is just not a good game or memorable in anyway since it entirely fees like they wanted to capitalize on the success of Dark Souls by rehashing it in an open world format and hyping it up as something that has more to offer. That is why it feels not memorable and forgotten despite not even being a year old.

    >Why was it so hyped? It was just a 7/10 game
People overrate it because it was made by Miyazaki, normalgays LOVE Fromsoft and Miyazaki, plus he got the man who wrote the Game of Thrones books to help with the game's lore and setting, so that was yet another huge marketing boost for normalgays, since they love Game of Thrones.

Speaking of GRRM, I wasn't expecting a top tier story but I was expecting at least SOME story. He might as well not have been been involved with how little story/lore there is.

He didn’t even work on the story much except for writing up one paragraph long “lore” for the game. It was all a marketing strat.

Every game is 7/10 to you so how dos it make any difference when I think about any game the flaw is either not constnatly action, too short, too hard, this undergorund secret sucks, because elevataor ride takes too long.

Yeah, I know. Doesn't really change my statement, each game keeps on bringing in more people than the last.

Not just this but lure a big enemy or mini boss towards a church, fallen tree, wall or gravestone and they'll knock chunks out of it. Really makes the combat feel "epic" sure the falling trees clip into the ground but I really don't care it's a video game

I donno why they give enemies and players bounce animations and never felt the need to do the same for big enemies. How many boss arenas have big pillars the boss is oblivious to?

All the previous games had this though. The games have always had havoc physics and a bunch of pointless breakable shit littered everywhere. Some temporary terrain deformation like craters and debris would've been a much more impressive and logical next step.

Am i the only one bothered by how boring and generic these games started to become? They no longer feel like down to earth fantasy games with believable characters and the gritty and toned down atmosphere. All the characters in ER are some goofy meme characters that feel more like anime characters rather than arthurian legends. Look at Godfrey for an instance his backstory and reveal were nice but when he talks about “ le lion was holding up my power level” it all turns to shit. Literal cringy shonen shit that caters to underage dragonball spics.
