I mean what's more of a slog, conquering a whole nation in one chapter on one map or spending 8 chapters where each little obstacle is its own map?

          Anonymous

Well the idea of the smaller chapters is that you can put the game down. So by definitely the larger chapter is more of a slog.

            Anonymous

I mean, you can save at the start of every turn, nobody's forcing you to do the entire chapter in one go, or even save-scumming your way to win if you so desire.

            Anonymous

My brother in Christ, save scumming was invented in F4, as the other anon said you can save at every turn, they implemented that cause they knew the frickhuge maps would take 1 hour minimum. I played 1 map per day, was a fun routine tbh.

I still don't understand why people wank Conquest so much, for every map that's actually good you have some garbage gimmick fest that's just as bad as your average Revelation map. I really don't care how good baby's first "defend the map for X amount of turns" was for shitters whose first game was Awakening.

Awakening, Birthright and Revelations are the only FE games I can't stand. What's the point of strategy RPGs without strategy? I know Japan agrees with me because they've written essays on how fricking terrible the balance is in all those games.

Extremely good map designs and units, where the team you craft changes the way you beat the maps.

NTA. Going through all the story maps...
Chapter 7 is boring, it pretty much a Survive map but all your units bar Effie have tissue paper for bulk.
Chapter 8 is pretty fun, hectic and uses its mechanics well.
9 is really weirdly design, it has no flow to its objectives and capturing Haitaka can be a crapshoot with Niles this low-level
I'm not going to convince anyone 10 is a chapter you kind of have to optimize the fun out of to survive with no casualities.
11 is wack, no matter what path you take. Either you are dealing with rape ninjas or have to take 3 of your units being at half-health for the rest of the map.
12 is terrible, the pots are an annoyance no matter what and breakign them all makes the map painfully one-dimensional.
13 is pretty basic. A decent palette cleanser.
14 is one of the few maps where the Birthright version is better. Being able to freeze the water to open up the entire map does make it really intense. Having it essentially be all chokepoints is...not.
15 is really fricking great, not even I can hate it and I'm glad it is in Rev.
16 is also pretty cool, it is a very unique objective, even if it is filler (Shura is the coolest Corrinsexual).
17 is the ninja rape cave. Enough said.
18 is great, but it is the second-to-last good map in the game...
19 is kitsune. I never thought I could hate kitsunes, but Fates prevails at that...
20 is Mr. Fuga's Wild Ride. It's a very confusing map that takes multiple tries to even understand the core gimmick, is actually cheesable once you know how it works, another map does its core ideas better, and is a clear difficulty spike regardless of difficulty settings. Frick this one.
21 is neat. It's messy because of Stone Mask Faceless and how fliers take the challenge out the map, but I like the ideas to it.
22 is okay. Not really remarkable in any fashion, just like Sakura.
23 is hit or miss for me. The linearity kind of kills it, but the raw challenge does make it pretty cool.

            (cont.)
24 is the last great map in the game. It may be pretty fricking empty in both visuals and challenge beyond the gimmick, but it is such a cool gimmick that really makes the Dragon Veins standout.
25 is YOUR MOTHERFRICKING LIFE ENDS 25 TURNS FROM NOW, and is honestly as bad as Ninja Rape Cave. If it wasn't skippable and honestly optimal to skip it cause the treasures are worthless to you, I would hate it as much as Ninja Rape Cave.
26 is awful. Too many debuffers, every enemy either is ready to crit you or just smack you dead after your constant debuffs, Iago's staff doesn't run out but the fun certainly does, and is just a big wall placed right in the end.
27 is fine. The gimmick is kind of forgettable and honestly unhelpful compared to just rushing the core path, but its your last breather before Endgame, so I'll let it slide.
Endgame is...hit or miss, just like 23. You either have a great time with your fully kitted-out squad versus the toughest challenge in the game, or just get BURIED in reinforcements and BETRAYAL'S wave spam. It really matters if the luck is on your side.

            >Chapter 7 is boring, it pretty much a Survive map but all your units bar Effie have tissue paper for bulk.
            Stopped reading there
Silas + Vow of Friendship + Lily's Poise makes Silas a fricking tank, and Arthur's starting 29-FRICKING-HP and Guard Stance with Effie makes him also immune, only affected by Poison Strike (not a problem if you have half a brain to use the full-charge Healing Staff Elise comes with), and Corrin, being Corrin with natural bulk from the Dragonstone, means that she can hold the line just as well as Effie, if not better when you factor in Jakob/Felicia's personal skill as well as Gentilhomme/Demoiselle

              Anonymous

It's still boring, and Arthur is always on a death clock on some runs because his personal skill shits on his Crit Avoid and he starts with 1 Luck. Either he does his job as Effie's stat backpack or he dies.

Are Kaga's non-FE games worth playing? I liked Thracia and it seems kinda endearing that he's making shitty RPGMaker games these days.

They are definitely interesting, at least past Tear Ring Saga. They all are pretty fun and have some unique ideas to stand out from FE, beyond the Kaga-isms.
Hard as nails, though, especially Berwick and Vestaria Saga I. If you are the type that gets easily overwhelmed from multiple objectives screaming for your attention, I would advise caution.

adding onto this anon, Vestaria Saga's 1 and 2 are very much "If you liked your entries with lower numbers, and relied more on units weapons/personal skills" then I can't recommend it enough, with that said you typically have to do alot of multi tasking per stage and sometimes there's time limits as well, but like, I wouldn't say these are hard games either, just games that will kick your shit in if your careless. This is the kind of difficulty I want in a game, not like SD's hard 5, or Reverse Lunatic, or Maddening, I just find fire emblem alot more fun when I get to play with busted weapons.

            >all your units bar Effie have tissue paper for bulk.
They don't actually. It's the gimmick of the map itself that destroys bulk forcing you to be aggressive. Even Effie becomes a one hit wonder if she gets Seal Speed by the pair up up north. The key to that map is using Jakob/Felicia as a ranged unit to debuff the enemy defense and killing stuff off with the other people in one hit. Setting up a shop right away eases the map a lot by letting you buy Vulneraries.

            >9 is really weirdly design, it has no flow to its objectives
Early players are supposed to be baited by the front entrance of the fortress and eating dick to the spearmen+archer formation, leading them to find alternative solution by infiltrating the map down the middle.

Then they're supposed to play Metal Gear Solid with Azura to lead her to the Dragon Vein point, which she can use to damage the formations in the center. Then you're supposed to be caught by surprise by the reinforcements whicy you can tackle two ways: by using attack stance and clearing mobs one by one with the help of your new dancer or by pairing everyone into Defense Stance and bracing for the next turn.

You are also given the option to pick apart the formation at the gate which lets new players know that tight formations that seem impossible from one side can pierced eaisly if approached from a blindside.

            >11 is wack, no matter what path you take
For the ninja side Arthur and/or Beruka paired defensively can take the ninjas despite the debuffs and make it out alive in Hard Mode. Lunatic too provided you deal with the mage.
The side with Azama you can bait the Hexing Rod and Diviners with Strategist Elise (promote at 10 always) Felicia (if you have her), or Niles, Then kill Azama. Ranged units can afford to take the Hexing rod if it lands anyways and the diviners won't be too threatening.

              >the pots are an annoyance
literally and unironically you are not supposed to break all the pots. In lunatic even the dragon vein point is a bait and will assuredly kill the person that triggers it. Instead you're supposed to make your way by breaking pots benefitial to you, and carving a path forward.

              >Being able to freeze the water to open up the entire map does make it really intense.
Didn't you just complain that breaking all the pots makes maps one dimensional? It's not like Conquest isn't all full of defensive units that make good use of chokepoints or anything like that...

              >I never thought I could hate kitsunes
The fox Den is an excellent chump check. It's a map that's designed around the player making full use of the Attack Stance mechanic. Foxes are low in numbers, are frail and have low HP and attack stance doubles the amount of attackers you have available, the dual attack helps you reach the oneshot range with ease, and attack stance raises accuracy by a lot. Not only that you can also split the last wave that alternates transparency by baiting through the bridge at the top and the main path. It's a map that rewards players who uses their full army and punishes players who pairs everyone up and relies too much on mounted units like Xander.

              >and is a clear difficulty spike regardless of difficulty settings
You can, turn 1, pair Camilla with Kaze, roid his ass with temporal stat boosters/kitchen/rally strength. dance them up so Kaze is in range of Hayato, shank the motherfricker an his hexing rod turn 1, then use the wind to pull Kaze down into safety while also pushing Xander up so he can solo the right side of the map. Turn one before the enemy can react.
Is this really a difficulty spike, or just a skill issue?

              >Not really remarkable in any fashion
advancing two sides as one clears the other path isn't fun to you? But a one-dimesional map like 18 is?

there's nothing wrong with this, but it's also what stings because you realize that IS will literally NEVER make another conquest again. They could only afford to do so because birthright (and to an extent revelations) exists for the casuals.

              Anonymous

Ninja rape cave is a map where your defensive units really shine, along with supporting units. As always, Camilla is able to handle the ninjas due to WTA, and you have other candidates for going on the offense like Niles or a sniper Mozu, along with any child units you may have gotten. Xander with a defensive pair up and some supporting auras can hold off ninjas since they'll ignore him, and none of the enemies have pass. Benny is another option, along with Effie. Protecting Saizo for the speedwing is rather easy, it just involves trapping him with a dragon vein, though it does put pressure on you to get the treasures that the dragon vein activation will block off prior to doing that. As for the boss, you can reduce the avoid with skills like heartseeker, Benny's personal, or just use archers with high hit rates.

For Fuga's wild ride, it's a matter of learning how the wind mechanics work. Enemies are split up fairly well so I don't believe there's much of an overlap between magic and physical defenses, allowing you to split your units if you desire. You just need to watch out for the occasional bolt naginata. The biggest problem of this map is getting in to kill Hayato to avoid the hexing rod, as you'll need to either prepare a shield gauge or just have your glass cannons take the hit and be extra careful with them for the rest of the map. This map is best handled with a bunch of fliers, of which you have Camilla, Beruka, Xander through heart seals, Selena through heart seals, Azura's S support through marriage seal, and then any friendship seal candidates or child units. Having only fliers is a bad idea though due to kinshi knights, so you want to have a nice split for the map.

Last time I used mostly the nobles, elfie and benny. I like to split the army up and go along both the top and bottom of the map. It's less hard and more tedious and map forces you to take you time. I still never got past Fuga's wild ride.

What’s your opinion on female avatars?

                Anonymous

                Fine, I'll bite.
To say I dislike them would be hypocrisy, because I love Corrin very much. But I do not love her for being an avatar. Rather, she resonates with my soul.
Regardless, I don't think FE does a good job with avatar units. Sure, you can change their name, and maybe how they look, but not how they act. (You), the player, do not have agency over your own vessel. Robin is Robin, not (You). Same goes for Corn, Byleth, and now the Toothpaste bros. It's a very chep, tacked-on bone thrown at self-insert gays.
Thus, I think FE could do without the avatar concept, just make them as normal protagonist units and leave it at that. And that goes for male avatars too, of course.

                Anonymous

This is the exact reason I don't change their names. Byleth is Byleth, Shez is Shez, Robin is Robin, Corrin is Corrin, etc.

Outside of Fire Emblem: Heroes, where Kiran might as well not exist, anyway.

I can kinda see it with the others but Fates cutscenes are actual POVs.

Imo, the reason it was POV was to push the 3D gimmick. Granted, the fire above the buildings was nice, but pretty much no one used the 3D stuff.

Byleth being a VN protagonist rather than an actual character was the problem imo.

I just think it's a good showcase of what the series has to offer when you push the system to it's limits. It took what was introduced in Awakening and improved on it, along with doing its own thing.

Pair up is no longer a no brainer, you have to choose between attack or guard stance and there's enough enemy variety where you can't say that one is strictly better than the other. You can give everyone a stat backpack, but then you may end up being overwhelmed by reinforcements or unable to reach an objective in time because you don't have enough manpower on the following turn.

Weapons no longer having durability, but drawbacks based on the weapon is a contentious point, but I think the game handles it fairly well. Sometimes you need the brave effect to secure a kill, but you don't want to have it equipped and be within enemy lines because of the defense penalty. Units also don't suffer the stat penalties when using it for a dual strike, so it adds a layer of depth to the system.

Reclassing is fun. It's a good idea to allow you to build your army how you want, and Fates makes it so everyone has a default reclass option, but if you want more you now have to use limited resources to give them more classes. Now that TH exists, I think that's an example of giving too much freedom to the player, and every unit ends up feeling the exact same because of the strength of Wyvern Lords with your 2-4 mages. In Conquest some units desperately want the reclass, but you have to decide which reclass is more important at the moment. You also can't infinitely grind skills due to reclassing keeping your level the same.

Furthermore, on the topic of reclassing, giving everyone limited reclass options at first allows you to design the maps around what's available to the player. Early maps have easy solutions while late game maps expect you to be able to utilize the system to find the winning solution.

I could write more, but to sum it up I think it's a great game.

Tear Ring Saga is a lot of fun and plays almost exactly like FE. It’s basically a crazier version of Thracia gameplay wise.

I ordered Engage today. I don't know why or how, but one of my local store chains got the Divine edition for cheaper than the MSRP. So I got it even though I wasn't planning on going for the more expensive version.
Now that I've spent the relative big bux on the game instead of getting the vanilla version, it better be good. Hoping for the best.

What does the special edition even have? Is it just another artbook?

It doesn't have a lot. But the steelbook is always cool. And I actually like the idea of the cards since they'll be a good representation of the entire franchise.
The worth of the artbook kind of depends on what neat extra stuff it has. But I do kind of like the kind of concept art and character model sheets that they're demoing here. So it'll probably be a neat book to have.
The poster is cool but knowing the size of the box I can't imagine it being very large and it'll likely have hard creases on it from how it'll be folded.

Genealogy has the "darkest" plot in the main series, and some interesting ideas, but the execution of the storytelling is ridiculously clunky.
I suspect the remake might fix this somewhat, but introduce its own new fumbles.
Gameplay-wise, Genealogy is both one of the easiest and least enjoyable games due to the experimental mechanic changes.
The main reason I want to see a remake is gameplay improvements, because it is honestly the worst of Kaga's games outside the NES.

But is it darker than three houses? I feel like three houses is teh dakrest FE by a mile. I mean, I still remember playing FE4 the first time, asking Jeeves "how do I save Quan?" and Jeeves was like "you don't". Tragic backstories don't make 3H a 'dark' game, especially since they happen before the events of the game; even though it happens off-screen, I'd say the conclusion of Deirdre's story is far darker than anything in 3H since you see what she's like before and she actually dies. Also, the conclusion of Edelgard's backstory (hating the church so much) is so stupid that it really weakens any atmosphere they were going for.
Killing the students you had no connection isn't really that dark, no more than anything else.

Will I get raped if I try to ironman this game mostly blind? I played the remake years ago and from what I remember the roster size is kind of small. I managed to get through FE1 so I wanted to give the original Gaiden a shake, so I'm just wondering if there's anything in particular I should be aware of.

isn't Gaiden one of the shitter ones to Ironman? Most of your Units are regularly deployed.

Is ironmanning a fricking joke or a real phenomenon in the FE fanbase? Like rouge-likes, fine, ironmanning grand strategy games, OK, but fire emblem? How do you cope with utterly failing 50 hours into a run?

          Anonymous

          it's a real thing
it's unfortunate, but most fire emblem players are extremely autistic and need to ironman or else they'll savescum and ruin the "chance" part of FE. Some playthroughs might end in frustration but it's the lesser of two evils.
these games are easy and you can win with very high reliability, so you basically only fail an ironman when you do something dumb like forget to give your units weapons in battle preparations.

            Anonymous

Do you know how many times I have to replay like the 1st chapter of binding blade hard mode to prevent deaths? Ironman autists must know these games inside out.

ironmanning fe7 hhm is also dumb as frick just because of chapter 1, pent's chapter, and the protect zephiel chapter just off the top of my head
some games are better built for ironmanning than others but we are decades past the idea of games being built around just never bothering to reset after critical errors

Ironmanning in most old FEs where you get a ton of units every level until one or two maps before Endgame is fun as frick, its only in outliers like Gaiden and Genealogy, then the new games where interesting recruits evaporated as a concept where it falls apart.

          Anonymous

you can lose like 2 units per maps in most older FEs and still make it to Endgame with a full roster, its really not that bad.

I've had Nino's battle dialogue against her mom stuck in my head for 20 years. Now I've got Petra's last battle dialogue stuck in my head. It's unexpected to hear that from cute girls.

Most of the early games are designed around ironman (well, just not resetting when units die, not wiping your save whenever you gameover), that's why you just get shit tons of units, most of them being random dudes with like 2 lines of backstory.
Later games aren't really made for it (starting around FE7) due to limited rosters and the emphasis on supports and stuff -- plus SoV and TH adding a rewind feature, indicating you're not really expected to let people die -- but you can still make it work

How're we feeling about the divine pulses? All this talk about conquest just makes me remember how I'd have to replay a fricking hour because the boss dodged and critted me or some shit. And yet you don't get the same exhiliration as

Ninja Hell earned its nickname, I'd say, but the dopamine rush you get upon actually clearing it is something else.
            t. had to dig up this old screenshot, it's the most turns I'd ever taken in a FE game. I really liked to turtle back then

You're not forced to use them so they're okay in my eyes. It's kinda weird since it removes some of the rng frickery (and allows you to try out stupid shit if you want to), but the stress associated with those 1% crits was kind of fun, in a way, even though the crits actually happening sucks ass. I do wish they would have went with adding save points and more crit mitigation stuff like the crusader scrolls instead of just entirely removing the risk of getting fricked, though.

              Anonymous

No reason not to include them, but I'd prefer if it were a toggle thing and not forced on you when the MC dies.
90% of the time I used it in SoV and 3H were to rectify misinputs so it's not like its only use is cheating deaths.

divine pulse or battle saves are perfectly fine but i really wish there some form of incentive to not use them. i think of a lot of modern fire emblem players don't know how to do damage calculations and it works fine as a band-aid for that, since IS doesn't seem to want to shove working with the numbers into your face

I personally favor Vestaria Saga's "save every 5 turns". You lose some progress with a loss, but not a whole map's worth.
The Save Points in the DS games were neat too. These are what I prefer.
Turnwheel is a far better option than Every Turn Battle Save (FE4, Vestaria 2) though. Turnwheel is both less clunky and less powerful - no limit to Battle Save, while turnwheels can be limited to a certain amount of retries.

                >while turnwheels can be limited to a certain amount of retries.
In practice it isn't limited at all. It's just like having a savestate before you move any characters.
I do agree that the Vestaria 2 way of doing battle saves was pretty terrible and did impact my enjoyment of the game

                Anonymous

Turnwheel didn't help me the first time I went through the game. I had perma death on and managed to not lose anyone, or rewind as to not lose anyone, until literally the second to last attack. The big bad dragon 2% crit killed who I picked for my husband, Ferdinand, and I was out of resets. I did not restart.

              Anonymous

Divine Pulse/Turn Wheel is fine, its getting 10/12/13 uses of it per battle like in Echoes and Three Houses that's the problem.

              Anonymous

I like turnwheel because it saves a lot of time if you get scammed by a crit or misinput something. I think the issue is you get like... 15 of them. Making restarts kinda pointless.

              Anonymous

The only thing I dislike about divine pulse/turnwheel is that it feels like just another thing thrown in to adjust difficulty without really interacting with any other game mechanic. Ideally I'd like to see it, casual mode, and the various difficulty settings reworked into a more cohesive solution.

Most of the games, at least the earlier ones, supported ironman playthroughs by design. You get way too many units to actually field all of them, and it isn't like they're all joining at level 1. The only game that doesn't really apply to is FE4, and that game gives you a repairable staff that can resurrect dead units. People reset on these games because they're afraid of missing out on content/hate the feeling of losing a unit they've already invested in, not because losing them makes the game much harder.

You can revive your dead units at certain points in the game, so it´s not that punishing really.

Besides durability all the stuff I mentioned, along with HP values being low, means that the best way to do anything in Conquest is to just send a super-buffed unit in to kill everything. The kitsune map is hard usually but buffing Wyvern Lord Xander with tonics and food lets you win by putting the game on auto battle and not deploying anyone besides him and Corrin.

all FE games are like that.

            with HP values being low
As opposed to them being bloated to shit like in Awakening? It gives the game a stable foundation to balance everything around.

that the best way to do anything in Conquest is to just send a super-buffed unit in to kill everything.
What? Maybe if you're just facerolling things on Normal Difficulty without caring about having a well-rounded team while quickly building supports.
            >Chapter 10? Let me just send in Effie paired up with Corrin as a backpack…
            >Seal Defense Spear Fighters and Ninja debuffs coupled with Poison Strike?
            >Seal Strength on Oboro, Warding Blow and Darting Blow on Hintata (made all the more deadly by aforementioned debuffs)?
            >WITH enemies around him that are constantly on the push, forcing me to utilize Attack Stance lest I get overwhelmed on enemy phase?
            >AND I want to grab the Dracoshield and Dual Club? And there are all these Pegasi Knights that need to be dealt with, trying to rush past me that will result in an instant defeat if ignored?
            >Lunge Oni Savages on the left and Archers on the right? The following waves have even STRONGER enemies and more of them?
The "send one wunderwaffe unit in" tactic is only viable with Vantage shenanigans on either super Opheilia or Xander, Nosferatu and 1-2 range physical weapons got nerfed hard with being unable to crit or proc skills.

HP being low means makes defence means most units get 2-3 shot so cannot be left in enemy range, however if a unit has high defence then he will be able to take loads more hits so it's best to leave that one unit to shoulder most enemy phase combat. There also isn't much reason not to since real time pressure (i.e. not turn limits) only exists in around 3 maps.
Ch 10 is an exception and is why people seem to like it. Did you really play a map like 13 by tackling the enemy squads all at once and exposing multiple units on enemy phase?

Also debuff should have been a 2 turn thing (current, next) instead if a slow recovery, I could even excuse shit like stacking it with Inevitable End

Thracia is super easy if you know what's coming.
In chapter 14 you can wall off with unarmed mounted units, or you can kill enemies for easy exp. The enemies will have 1% hit rate on your units if you support them and take advantage of the charisma skill.

      Anonymous

The same way I deal with everything else in Thracia. Stacking support bonuses/tile bonuses/charm/king sword bonus, making good use of wrath units on enemy phase, and abusing the shit out of staves. I went the extra mile on Chapter 14 and used the Thief staff to disarm the boss on the bottom left just to get Dean into that house for his prf lance, while feeding exp to Olwen letting her solo the dark mage reinforcements.

Yeah but you have to level him up 19 times and he has no pursuit or mount until promotion. When he gets there he's amazing, but up until then he isn't anything special.

yeah master knight's the best class in the game but leif's base class is fricking ass

Unironically play on the higher difficulty levels and it very much becomes a reflex/crisis management simulator, Hopes in Particular you have to be on your A game for those tight S rank requirements, its very much one of those games where its not so hard to EVENTUALLY clear a stage, but doing so as effectively as possible is another matter, then you have spin offs like Spirit of Sanada which will give you a typical Musou giant stage and then go " Alright now Clear this in like 5 minutes while doing every single objective or you lose" and all of a sudden you can't afford to take your time, all of a sudden, if you aren't curbstomping the entire map you will flat out lose, and thats kinda what high level musou play is, your either dominating the entire map from start to finish or you make one slip up and your dead. these are not hardcore games by any means ofcourse, its very easy to understimate what is required to play these at the highest levels because at the lower levels, its very much just a brainless button smasher, and thats okay.

        Anonymous

like the other anon said it's when you play at high difficulties or the game starts throwing you a bunch of objectives and other stuff to slow you down on a map where being overwhelmed is really easy
and of course just getting new weapons/characters to try

        Anonymous

To add, the good ones have a surprising amount of strategy and time management requirements to actually 100% stages, all on top of the surface level fun of cutting down hordes of enemies with huge, flashy attacks. It's entertaining wish-fulfillment with a challenge.

you're in luck anon, of all musous I've played 3H is easily the best
        It's a genuinely fun game

That's good to hear. Hopefully they keep making more FE Warriors games like Hopes in the future.

          >>To add, the good ones have a surprising amount of strategy and time management requirements to actually 100% stages,
this, I remember initially liking AoC because the early game is neat but as you progress you notice there's barely any map control and most maps are designed as lines rather than squares, if that makes sense, where you notice that you're intended to go from point a to point b and so on rather than managing the map like an actual battle by swapping between commanders

it really does feel like your army is just some shitty ass rebellion fighting against something far greater than you can handle. The usage of capturing as a mechanic rather than buying weapons like you would in a traditional FE was pure fricking brilliance from kaga

        Anonymous

Chapters 4-6 are my favorite. You never really get that kind of tense high stakes shit so early in a FE game.

It's the limited resources that does it. Makes it feel like survival horror. And then when you finally do get access to a supply depot and a store near the end it's while you're still ass clenching and about to get run down

The more customization and minmaxxing they add, the less perma death makes sense.
Why would you keep playing when you lose your uber mensch unit you devoted tons of resources and time into to a 1% crit?

      Anonymous

Nobody follows through with the perma death stuff anyways unless the person playing has made up their mind to do an Ironman.
It's pretty much just an insta-game over and reset for most people that play FE.

      Anonymous

Three Houses does it right by making permadeath affect the units you don't recruit. Recruiting them takes resources and effort that you want to spend elsewhere.

        Anonymous

Are you referring to the unit you can designate as your support unit for the month? Recruiting other students is basically free.

          Anonymous

I think he means that if you don't invest in recruiting a student you'll lose the ability to do so and have to kill them later. Which yeah, like you said it's basically free. And you can only deploy a small amount of units at a time so you don't even want to recruit everyone since you'll never use them..

This is why I can't wait for FE4 remake, deploying the entire army at once should just be standard, let me make battle lines to hold against the 30 enemies god damn it, instead of having every fight be the same 10 allies vs. 8 enemies and I wipe them before they get a turn.
