Fire Emblem Engage

This game is a big improvement over Three Houses, all things considered. While 3H eventually turns into a slog with the Calendar system and is boring to replay on different routes, Engage actively wants me to replay it with how much you can change shit up with its ring mechanics and large amounts of playable units. Plus it’s just SO much more satisfying to beat a map in Engage than Three Houses. And while 3H does have a better story and cast of characters, I think that Engage’s cast is a lot better than people give it credit for and

It just feels weird to me seeing people suddenly have standards for FE plot and characters when Engage is 100% in line with the GBA and 3DS games. Is everyone a Three Houses newbie?

      >when Engage is 100% in line with the GBA and 3DS games
Most people don't want that anymore. They want more mature stories like Three Houses, Thracia and Genealogy.
I'm an oldgay and one of the things I liked about 3H was that it shitcanned all of the self-parody and irony of the Fateswakening era and tried to tell a serious story again.

3H doesn't have a mature story. The backstory is decent but most things that happen in-game are just as silly as the 3DS-era games.

I've never cared for the plot in fe games aside from PoR. Good characters are a must though, and Engage sadly has very few of them.

Engage being in line with the 3DS games is an issue.
Though it has significantly better map design than any of the 3DS entries and Three Houses except for Conquest.
If anything I think its more of its own thing.

Its inline with the GBA games, but is tonally fairly different and arguably more honest about its simplicity. The GBA games had a layer of serious fantasy, how people talked and how info of the region is monologue. When you break it down everything is simple as shit but appearances matter. Framing also plays a role. You forgive silliness in the GBA games cause it could only do so much, when really the same issues like character just walking up to the enemy to talk and then teleporting across the map still happen.

Engage makes mistakes with its first impression and lack of fluff to trick people. If Alear was didn't look like that, the game opened in Brodia and there was a monologue about politics between each chapter. A lot of story complaints would disappear despite the plot not improving.

Cause people still like them and rarely rip into their stories even if they acknowledge they aren't deep. This includes people who only played them recently or after getting into one of the modern titles. That establishes a general base line of what people are okay. People are in fact okay with simple and even at times silly stories. Which is a counter to the idea FE has to be some GoT shit, very serious and dry is just one tone FE can take.

Engage's story is generic. But what I really cant stand is the immersion break I feel from every cutscene where characters are portrayed as literally 4ft from eachother, and then one "runs away" or the custcene changes and they are 100ft away.
Or shit like Veyle stealing shit off camera, or Zelkov stealing shit from a giga powered up Veyle and just a multitide of fricking nonsense like that and it seems to get worse the further you go into the story. Chapter 17 was so fricking moronic in this way cutscene wise.

Fates and Awakening and their quirky anime tone were a disaster for the Fire Emblem franchise which previously took itself seriously. I'm glad to see Engage getting shit for the same thing, it means the average nuFE fan has realised the narrative that the games always have to have shit writing like the 3DS era isn't true and was never true for most of the 12 pre-Awakening games. Now Sigurd's was a nightmare because of those 2 mages who can one shot almost anyone, although Sigurd himself was a pushover.

Lyn's difficulty revolved around the fact that you basically only have 1 ring at the time her paralogue comes up and the fact that she can snipe you from halfway across the map every other turn
Ike wasn't so hard once you figured out you can bait him into going to the right instead of breaking down the wall and then fricking him up with magic when he's in range

the trick to lyn is having someone with enough defense to tank all of the left side bowknights, but not too much that they ignore you
I had just the right amount so that they would attack into louis until resolve activated, then they ignored him. He also had the perfect amount so that lyn ignored him too, then once she was getting toward the center of the map he drank a vuln so she turned around to try and hit him with her sword. I got her to the top center of the map before she got close enough to someone to trigger a combat (which is what causes the reinforcements to spawn) so it was easy to kill her by herself.

So how does poison work exactly? From what I understand it means an enemy will take +1 damage every time a unit attacks with a max of +3 damage. But if that's the case that means it's good early game, but not so much late game. Is it not percentage based?

      Anonymous

it's flat damage. Note that it ignores defense so if you do 0 damage poison will still do the full 1-3 depending on the stacks.
It's mostly only good for super high defense targets or for bosses who have multiple hp bars.

Every round of combat where daggers deal damage apply a stack of poison. 1 stack is +1 damage, 2 is +3, and 3 is +5. Poison won’t go away over time and must be removed so it can make your tanks weaker (if they ever take damage from a dagger somehow).

Corrin is by far the most interesting emblem. Fog is probably the best, but ice is really good for staggering enemy approaches and making artificial chokepoints to set up big damage with Sigurd. The healing field is also nice for keeping everyone topped off while being aggressive for things like the hero ability that lets them double in chain attacks at full health or or chain guard without needing to spend action economy on healing during player phase.
She's really good on Yunaka, but I'm keeping her on Alear just for all the utility.

It's desgined with Classic mode in mind, if your early units die you won't be fricked for the rest of the game.

That's just how FE works. You have to make choices about which units you'll be focusing on, who gets the XP and that some units will die possibly leaving you stuck. The problem is more modern FE has incentivised and allowed you to keep everyone alive so easily. Even though Engage is still designed around the idea that later units have better starting stats so they can fill the role you lost easily.

Basically the series needs to come to terms with all this and find uses for bigger unit pools. Not just make grinding easier so everyone is level 20 for the next 8 deploy map.

        Anonymous

        >You have to make choices about which units you'll be focusing on, who gets the XP
Virtually every early game unit gets completely outclassed by a later recruit so even this isn't true. No one is going to be talking about strategy in this game in like a month because the good units are miles ahead of everyone else so everyone will just use them and build them the same way. 3H and Conquest didn't have that problem.

Good units may just be better but you can still make the early game units work. Clanne has been a very good mage knight with the Corrin emblem for 6 move draconic hexes and canter, Anna doubles everything with Lyn and can actually do damage with the radiant bow in astra storm due to her magic, and Jean is a staff bot.

His low magic is patched up by mage and mage knight’s 25% growth, Corrin giving an extra 4 magic at max bond, and a bolganone tome. Like I said there are some units that are just better than others but the idea that you can’t make early units work isn’t true.

It's really not that bad. The main issue is the exp cut on Maddening, so you can only realistically allow a couple of units to keep up. The early units have the advantage of access to Canter and/or Marth's skills too.

Really, it's just Framme and Vander that seem like they really have no point.

I did my first skirmish at chapter 13 now. Are they supposed to be so hard? I really struggled with it.

For whatever reason, skirmishes in DLC land seem easier. Don't know if it's an oversight or if it's intended as a selling point of the DLC. They didn't advertise it anywhere though.

It sucks because you don't have access to all of the rings until basically the end of the game. Tome proficiency for instance is totally unavailable between chapters 11 and 19, and you don't get a reliable supply of master seals until after you lose the early game rings

If you already know about the spoiler you can make preparations around it though. It's really only Tome proficiency for the middle game characters that's kind of fricked.

          >Virtually every early game unit gets completely outclassed by a later recruit
Yet some don't, so you have to decide to keep a unit you invested in or let go of that wasted XP. Yunaka vs Zelkov is already a heated debate. Then you get some people saying largely dropped units like Alfred are actually fairly good so you shouldn't drop them.

Plus in this case pre-Ch10 units got to invest in skills others won't have access to for a while.

The early game units that get outclassed are very overblown. The only ones I can think that are legitimately outclassed are Boucheron, Etie, Jeanne, Vander, and Lapis. Clanne and Anna are bad if you leave them in their base classes but turn out pretty nice if reclassed.

If you have the DLC, skirmishes that spawn on the Tiki map are oddly much weaker than those that spawn on the world map. You can also deploy a full 14 units there. Great for building supports and leveling up weaker units. There's no reason to not buy Royal Lineage from Emblem Edelgard for 150 sp since it pays itself off within 2 levels.

You can foge a steel lance to get it early, but an enemy drops one eventually and you can also buy it at around that same time. Fair warning - it sucks compared to the levin sword

It does deal magic damage, yes. It's outrageously heavy though, so Chloe won't be doubling with it very often for quite a while. It's better to promote Chloe to a sword griffin and just use the levin sword

Celine should be ripped. Her class is explicitly both mag/str based. You're supposed to switch the weapon depending on the situation.

Problem is that you end up being kind of bad in both types of offence.
Her calss' skill does address it, but then you can just use a class which will give her a decent value of either ATK or MAG. At least it would be reliable and not dependant on a skill who may or may not activate.

How do you even know if a unit is falling off since everyone have different hidden level thanks to the shitty job promotion system
I wish it was like Ragnarok Online

      Anonymous

      >different hidden level
      What?

        Anonymous

unlike most FE games your current level has minimal effect on how much exp enemies give you, it's based on your internal level. So promoting at 10 and leveling to 10 would get roughly the same exp as promoting at 20 and being 1. There's no way to see what your units real level is, only your current level

        Anonymous

If I promote a character level 13, his level will reset to 1 but his "hidden level" is the same. So the amount of exp he'll need to go from level 1 to 2 will be like level 13 to 14.
Now if you didn't keep track of what level each of your character were when you promote them, you have no idea that your level 11 advanced class character is the same hidden level as your level 2 because they were just promoted at different level.
In Ragnarok Online, the character level and the job/class level are separate so it's easier to know where you are in the progression system

      Anonymous

Does the unit get one rounded by enemies? Can they deal a decent amount of damage, or only chip? Did another unit join in the same class but with better stats all around? If any combination of the two are true, that unit is falling off.

Frick off homosexual. You sound like you love sucking dicks and you literally just said they always had 4-5 in every other game.

It's really not that bad. The main issue is the exp cut on Maddening, so you can only realistically allow a couple of units to keep up. The early units have the advantage of access to Canter and/or Marth's skills too.

Really, it's just Framme and Vander that seem like they really have no point.

There are enough characters you can vary who you actually use. But, yeah, the lack of different paired endings kind of hurts replays for no reason, considering how easy it'd be to add them.

It sucks because you don't have access to all of the rings until basically the end of the game. Tome proficiency for instance is totally unavailable between chapters 11 and 19, and you don't get a reliable supply of master seals until after you lose the early game rings

Ragnell is super special though. It just has a super lazy origin story.

It's a god blessed weapon, able to break through goddess blessing that otherwise completely nullifies damage and can even release energy blasts.

No? The Black Knight threw it to Greil, Greil rejected it, then Ike carried it along for a long time before deciding to use it against the Black Knight.

It's not the best utility wise but it's by far the most combat oriented and any unit using it will become your best enemy phase tank.

What are you on about? Chapter 11 was absolutely amazing and had genuine consequences on your party making abilities and decisions.
It also made chapter 17 that much more impactful because they were all using the rings you were spamming the shit out of for the first third of the game.
Genuinely one of the best thematic fights in FE from a gameplay perspective (lets see how you like getting Warp Ragnarok'd for a change Toothpaste kun) ive seen.

It also motivates you to actually get the rings back, which wouldnt happen if they pussy footed and gave you them all back starting in ch12

Xenoblade 3 has this super dumb "loss" sequence where you lose a character in a cutscene but there is zero gameplay integration at all where you have to cope with the loss of power and missing that character. The cutscene ends and you get the character back because god forbid the player is inconvenienced in any way.

Don't worry, it can't get worse from here. There's literally nothing more powerful than Divine/Fell Dragons and Alear is both so we're going to cycle back around to normal dudes like Marth and Alm then back to eugenics children like Sigurd, Seliph, Leif then magic weapons like Roy, Eliwood/Hector/Lyn, Eirika/Ephraim, Ike, Micaiah THEN back to Dragons.

Explaining what is going on with Byleth is not that hard, the problem is trying to make sense of what Byleth and Rhea child would be.

        >the problem is trying to make sense of what Byleth and Rhea child would be.
Nabatean with the Crest of Flames and Crest of Seiros. Given we know from Edelgard's ending that Byleth doesn't need the heart of Sothis to live it means a child could be born normally with no need to trade the heart to the child like with Sitri.
Thinking about it, it'd just be a better version of Edelgard as it would have two major crests as it's getting both crests directly from the source unlike Edelgard's minor crest.

I'm 2/3s through Conquest and wondering if I should play Birthright then Revelations afterwards or just Revelation or neither? Depends on how too similar the games might feel playing them in a row.

      Anonymous

They're actually pretty different unlike 3 Houses' routes, although when you get to Revelations you see more map reuse before the 2nd half of the game.

The main issue is that Birthright is kind of mindless and Revelations' maps are often outright aggravating.

All 3 routes are different with only 1 or 2 maps shared from what I remember. Revelation is the one that reuses the most I think but with shitty added gimmicks.

All 3 routes share the maps pre split and rainbow sage, but the enemies are different in each route.
Birthright and Conquest share Cheve, the ice tribe, the boat map, and Izumo but different enemies due to appearing at different points.
Conquest and Revelation share the port town of Dia, Fuga’s map, and the map where you can create clones of everyone.
Birthright and Revelation share the fort map in Hoshido, and the ninja forest.

Maddening main story feels impeccably balanced but the Paralogues devolve into some horseshit imo.

Dunno how good Generals/Great Knights are in this game as I've mostly relied on dodgetank Alear/Kagetsu/Zelkov and some Ike action for front lining.
Diamant is also somewhat coming into his own but he can still get unlucky and die if he doesn't proc Sol enough in a horde. That's more Roy being busted though.
Enemy attack stats are too high to comfortably tank and gigaboosting DEF doesn't really work as you'll get ignored as soon as they start dealing 0 dmg.

        Anonymous

You have to be aware that mages especially nullify a bit of dodge tank utilities, because they remove cover bonus. For Yunaka it's fine because she has amazing res, but zelkhov and kagetsu can get hit hard. ALso, team attack are 80% , so dodge isn't helping you there.

Frankly i keep a mix of both, diamant and louis in the thick of it, zhelkov and MC doing more dodgy stuff.

Good mention to alcryst with lyn, one rounding mage so let the others shine.

Louis and Jade negate anything that's not a mage as a threat, Jean negates anything that is a mage as a threat.

My Louis can't seem to cut it anymore since every enemy started using silver weapons. I mean he only takes a few points of dmg, but when everything doubles you and the chain attacks, he takes like 15hp dmg per round so he can't tank more than 2 enemies. Haven't tried Jade but I don't think her stats are as good.

It may be a temporary thing but I feel the jump from steel to silver for every enemy is too powerful. I'm still mostly using steel and don't really see much option to go to silver given almost everyone is a buildlet. But silver doesn't come with any hit bonus so my yunaka with 120 avo is still tanking like a champ.

Man i just did the chapter where you get emblem Ike, the boss in that had a brave axe hitting twice for like 40 atk, almost nobody in my army stood a chance of tanking that, so i just sent in Chloe with a Micaiah engraved javelin and Yunaka with her Sigurd engraved dagger. The boss ignored Yunaka because lol 0% hit, but Chloe had just the right amount to get him to like 5% hit chance. It was great because i was even able to pull his brother away from him into my army since the brother had even less hit and would ignore Chloe too.
