Minimalistic, streamlined, neutral UIs - especially the grey/black and white ones - are one of the red flags that are only present in extremely shitty games. That I find that in a silent hill rape child in current year doesn't surprise me at all.

Missing a muddy brown item because it's indistinguishable from the muddy brown floor is shit design.

Because GRAFFIX and visual noise mean you can't tell what can be interacted with and what can't. The health drink in the original stands out and James turns his head to points of interest when you are near. Some specific spot to survey the corpse won't stand out.

Game devs did not suffer of such problem 20 years ago, because they used this magical thing called SUPERIOR DIRECTING + CINEMATOGRAPHY to highlight points of interest, non-verbally and naturally.
But alas, the TLOU generation literally has said many times that if the game does not TELL them to do something, they don't even think TO do anything at all.

in short: if you cannot use things like color, lighting, scene composition and distinct design to do guide players, you are below C-tier hack. SH2 made it extra easy since James literally stared at any point of interest and monster.

if they remove the tank controlls the game will be 99% easier

They did, and they also removed the INVENTORY.
You now instead got a shortcut key for medical items and instant weapon switching, with cancels, dodges and whatnot.

          >James literally stared at any point of interest and monster.
          Is that really better?
Doest it take agency from the player?

funny how this is only a problem with modern games

      Anonymous

It's not, really: it's a consequence of Devs cluttering up the game with non-interactable decorations that you need to signpost the stuff you can actually utilise.

        Anonymous

I do agree, but in a cluttered environment it's good (enough) design.
What would you suggest? Floating items or rotating ones aren't much better, are they?

No, no it's not. Treating the player like a blind moron is not good game design

It's not treating players as blind morons. It's designing FOR blind morons. Big difference and it's why it succeeds.

Except silent hill 2 did that without fricking hurting the immersion by having stupid button prompts on screen, they built rooms around the items in them and there was never any confusion in them
I suppose they're making the right decision though, only mouth breathing morons are going to be playing this tripe

There will be people playing this for the first time. Just because you used the guide and know exactly where to go and what to do after 20 years doesn't mean that other people do. They will have a better first-time experience.

Yellow paint is arguably even worse because it's just devs jacking off about "muh diegetic game design" without understanding how those elements should actually be used.

I'm making an immersive game. I'll make sure to put button prompts and item silhouette highlighting under the Accessibility menu with them off by default, and this menu will have the icon of a wheelchair, to really drive the point home that this feature is intended for literal morons.
