Goats was enabled by healers mostly. Ana, specially. But game itself has a huge problem where tanks and healers were head and shoulders above dps. It just needed to be 10v10 or 12v12 or idk what to be better. With more open maps. Instead it was 6v6 cos muh e-sports.
GOATS was just them being incompetent when they introduced a third tank as a healer. Pros hated it but used the cheese strat because it was too powerful. Everyone did that.

That doesn't stop Actiblizz from trying to force it into being an esport anyway, and slowly but surely strangling it to death in the attempt.

Apparently Kotick himself Got heavily involved and forced a lot of stuff towards the legacy sports model rather than letting it play out more like normal esports. The huge franchise buy-ins up front were part of this. He wanted to own the NFL. And of course when there is all this huge money driven directly by the CEO riding on the esports side it's going to horribly warp development. Now the rest of the company isn't blameless, they made the day to day decisions that fricked things up. Having the money devil shouting in your ear probably didn't help.
Sept 21st. I am a little hyped because I played the frick out of the beta and it was fun.
The biggest mistake was the similar UI, so now they get compared to OW even though the game is a far fricking cry from OW. It's much faster and less gimmicky.
I played the beta.
1) The performance is shit, you get 90fps in fights at 1080p/low on top end hardware. This is expected of a Japanese game using UE4
2) It is clearly heavily "inspired" by OW. Several of the classes are direct clones of OW characters.
3) Datamining confirms there will be P2W shit to harvest money from Gundam gacha whales

They figured esport was the way to do it because of the prominence of LOL, DOTA, CSGO, sport at the time.
But then they applied their notions of MMO balancing to this game, fricking it up every step of the way, catering to tryhards and metatards on Reddit, sucking the fun out of the game for everyone else.
The only reason why dota survived is because blizz ignored it, they would have absolutely raped it into obscurity if they got ahold of it.

I quit when they reworked Hanzo. He had multiple voice lines relating to his scatter shot. Simple geometry was a meme. He got an achievement for one-shotting with it. It was offputting how they took something that was so obviously integral to their initial concept for the character and just replaced it before the game even had its first anniversary. Future reworks and patches showed I was right to worry and they really had poor concepts of what they wanted OW to be and what they wanted characters to do.
I raugh when they added Hanzo to hots as a more faithful representation than he had in overwatch.

I remember once watching an overwatch league stream and it was a fricking mess because twitch couldn't keep it locked to 1080p so whenever a mess of particle effects showed up (80% of the game) it'd be a horrible pixelated nightmare. Even when it didn't drop you still couldn't tell what the hell was actually going on.
The game itself is horribly noisy and has terrible visibility, video compression shitting itself only adds to the intended experience.

I don't understand how this game ever took off competitively. No movement acceleration so movement can be completely unpredictable in an FPS, tons of abilities that require zero aim and are powerful, horribly imbalanced classes, awful design, and even frustrating design.

you don't pay expenses related to your cost of living and the org covers all travel fees
at first, teams were contractually obligated to cover these expenses, but as time passed more and more team owners complained about the insane overhead costs that come with maintaining a team and player contracts were changed to only cover minimal cost-of-living expenses
however, the better funded teams(fuel, shock, glass, etc) can afford the bargaining chip of an expense-free environment which just helps keep the best players in the richest teams

if you aren't a player/involved with the team, then esports orgs run just like normal businesses. behind the scenes, you have extensive corporate structures. for getting involved with that then it's formal education + interest in video games
advertising is probably the most lucrative/rewarding component outside of being a player. a lot of teams work solely off of money received through sponsorships so if you have a knack for sales then you can become a superstar for your team
if you don't have player/streamer/etc cred, then esports isn't as much of a boys-club/wild west thing anymore. these people that own teams now run them like businesses, and the ones that don't now report record losses and go under

Overwatch is a great game on itself but the majority of players want a different game and that's what Blizzard wants for OW2. You can say so the shit you want, but for those who actually play the game, despite all the bad decisions and bad management, it is a great game. It pains me that they are incompetent and chasing the big money from people who will never keep their interest. F2P is not a ticket for popularity, it won't last forever. They're promising more content they can deliver and they've blamed the public for far too long. It's a shame because I love this game. By myself, with my girlfriend.
