Unironically a lack of competition. I remember reading somewhere that it's the most popular western fighting game (more than moron kombat even) and it has one of the higher recurrent player counts out of any fighting game, in spite of it being an old, busted, unbalanced piece of shit. The constant updates and periods where it goes on sale probably don't hurt either.

Shinobi rework was what made me uninstall. Sure it made him "viable" but every "viable" character is the same because the game is fundamentally flawed at design. You don't even clash swords, just feint and punch/tackle/shield bash.
    Esports was a fricking mistake.

The character pool is just too big. I want another dev to take the same combat by drop this hero character shit and balance it around weapons

I remember being hyped for this game. I was really enjoying it at launch, played it for a good while even if the only char i've played (orochi) was utter shit at the time (at least he was better than kensei i guess), with his only ""good"" move being a bugged zone attack indicator. I later returned to it and he got buffed out of nowhere making a bunch of his moves actually usable. I think i finally dropped it for good not that long before the patch that added chink heroes. I sometimes get the urge to reinstall it but then i realize that they've probably added/changed so many chars at this point that i'd have to develop my muscle memory from scratch, and also it's probably a completely different game at this point anyway. Thanks for reading my blog

Nothing, it all went fricking wrong and now every single piece of shit character plays the same. If I had to point when the game died exactly, I'd say it was with the black prior release.

yeah, the game was still fine prior to his release

I stopped after he released as I'd grown tired of TENEBRIS, do all the characters really play the same now? I used to play like six or seven and they all felt pretty different say compare shaman to centurion to highlander to peacemaker to aramusha?
Every so often I think about getting back into it but I'm so rusty now if I was kept in the same bracket it'd be rough going.

how so? lets see other fightan games MK11 has 3k players, SFV is at 3.5k.
how about guy-hit-guy-with-sword games? mordhau is at 1.5k, chivalry at 2k
these are all much younger titles too. I'd say FH is doing very well for itself... for some reason.

who cares you fricking moron, as long as you're able to get matches why would you care? 5k is more than enough to sustain a playerbase you dumb frick

not to mention 5k is only steam. doesn't account for people only using the ubishit store, or console players from crossplay

Someone in ubisoft actually cared. Like, seriously, For Honor alone still leaves me hoping that someone at ubisoft still cares about video games.
It's very surprising to see any support given that such unusual niche games die fairly quickly after developers realise they couldn't make Fortnite or Overwatch.
Also literally the most popular fighting game LMAO.

There has to be a better way to do melee combat than just repeatedly cancelling attacks like a gaylord.

      >There has to be a better way to do melee combat than just repeatedly cancelling attacks like a gaylord.
The answer lies with Dark Souls/Elden Ring

Not him but nah. I played Souls PvP for years and could not go back to it after playing FH. Feels too simple and boring in comparsion

          Anonymous

I could never get down with the rock paper scissory nature of FH and it's nonexistent in Souls so I prefer Souls. Although it could do with some more complexity, but it seems like it's hard to do that without introducing 50/50 mixups and other nonsense.

            Anonymous

There are more than 3 possible outcomes and reactions to attacks in FH so RPS doesn't really apply

              Anonymous

I don't know, I remember there being a lot of guesswork involved from the time I played. It's one of the main issues with designing the game around feints

                Anonymous

It has even more guesswork now but that's necessary especially because you fight people with 300plus FPS that can react to every attack faster than 400ms easily. Fighting games usually always need attacks that have require educated guesses as reactions because otherwise it just ends in a staring contest, which is what FH started as because everything was too slow

                Anonymous

Too much guesswork isn't fun at all, I think they handle it beautifully in Elden Ring by minimizing the risk of commitment to a point where you have a lot of room to play around. Even though there are a lot of cheese tactics that essentially make you immortal if you don't engage, like the broken light roll. It kind of makes the game more interesting if you don't take it too seriously.
