I've never had Yuro, so I assume American.

Concave Y and X? I agree. I can't believe no new controllers do this.

It became less relevant as time went on, but for 2D games, it's essential. Putting a groove into a button that you hold 90% of the time for running/charging weapons is just a no-brainer.

          Anonymous

The Yuro kind are the original M&Ms, and to this day are not sold in the US because. I dunno, they don't want to rebrand for the American market? M&Ms are better anyway.
Fun fact: American Smarties are called Rockets in Canada, because Canada does sell the original Smarties and so American Smarties needed to rebrand.

i think it was pretty smart to make them smartie buttons. the idea behind that redesign was that by making the x and y buttons indented there'd never be confusion where you need to look down since you can tell the x and y from the a and b buttons by touch.

          Anonymous

they could have done that by texture too but no one is smart enough to do that despite having grip on the back of controllers these days

unironically the N64 is the most intelligently designed controller i've ever seen
      >SNES layout with handles if used in a 2D arrangement with the d-pad
      >middle stick + Z button is molded insanely well to the left hand and mirrors the design of flight-sticks
      >Z button is L for most intents and purposes because you can't reach the actual L button
      >C buttons were added both for camera controls as a bad replacement for a second stick, and to let the controller work in a 6-button layout
      >A and B as your main two buttons are color-coded
      >expansion bay for save-data if it can't be saved to the cartridge locally, and for rumble

        Anonymous

Based. I've said it then, and I've said it now. It was the best controller of the time, and most innovative one ever. The complaints over it are invalid because they are then comparing it to controllers who took what it did and made it better.

Even though it didn't have two analog sticks, or an analog click like the dual shock, it still had a more precise analog stick with a hexagon base so you can hit each of the 8 directions easily.

          Anonymous

          >it still had a more precise analog stick with a hexagon base so you can hit each of the 8 directions easily
GameCube also did this, and it's overall a better controller. The hexagon gate definitely needs to make a comeback, though.

            Anonymous

Don't get me started on the GameCube. It took some step forward, but also steps back.

            >+L and R triggers are god-tier
            >+main analog stick is best ever because of placement, grip, precision, hexagon base, more durable
            >+main button layout is actually more ergonomic and superior to the traditional 2x2
            >+most comfortable controller ever
            >+built in rumble

            But...

            >-no analog clicks, which were standard years earlier in the OG dual shock
            >-c stick is not really useable with the nib for long periods of time
            >-no second Z button, which is standard on the dual shock
            >-no longer 6 face buttons
            >-face buttons aren't analog, which was made standard by Xbox and PS2
            >-D-pad is too small

It had potential, but Nintendo being Nintendo decided to cheap out and because of it we got an inferior controller.

Dreamcast had a better controller and xbox took it and made it even better
but in the end the best controller really is a playstation controller unless you have giant hands
but still layout wise it makes no sense to have the dpad being at the bottom unless you have long fingers

I tried using my xbox pad for 2d platformers and it's just uncomfortable despite how good the dpad is

The N64 stick is notoriously easy to break, to the point that there is a high-end aftermarket solution to replace them.

It's overhated by zoomers who only saw it on photos and think the middle grip is just for show, but "most intelligently designed controller ever" oversells it. Dual Analog's placement became a standard for a reason, it's much more intuitive and allows easier access to all of the buttons.

The SNES controller is underrated. It's the basis for all the modern controllers, the only thing it lacks is the second L and R buttons and the analog sticks. It's funny that Nintendo themselves completely changed the design for the next console N64, which was fair enough and then kind of went back to the original concept with GameCube after Sony and Microsoft stuck with their designs, which are again, basically the SNES controller with 2 more buttons and 2 analog sticks

Is nintendo fricking serious right now? You can't customize the controls of N64 emulator games on switch? I paid an extra premium for the "online expansion" and the n64 games are fricking unplayable because a brainless button transition for that shitty octopus n64 controller? The Wii wouldn't let you customize virtual console controls, the Wii U then did let you customize, but then the switch took a step back so you'd buy those shitty retro controllers.
