In the west? probably not many before the 360 port. that said the import crowd loved it and many western reviewers praised it as one of the better games of that era. Ikaruga releasing in the west also helped increase it's reputation.

it was mostly people with connections to asia (specifically japan and hong kong). there was also overlap between that crowd and the ones that would eventually start fansubbing and selling bootleg vhs tapes of japan only anime.
there was a community in California and NYC but i doubt it was known elsewhere.
