From Software needs to make a new Tenchu game.

From Software needs to make a new Tenchu game. Sekiro is brilliant, but I miss Tenchu and wish From took a break from the Souls formula and gave us a proper stealth action Tenchu game.

Also, Wrath of Heaven is the best game.

They were just the publisher, they bought the IP from Activision after T3.
K2 and Acquire are the companies that actually made the games.

Not exactly. They were making a ninja themed game and they thought about using the Tenchu brand for it for a little while, but they never actually treated it like it was meant to be a Tenchu game, be it reboot, spinoff or sequel.
IIRC even the codename was "sth sth Tenchu", where "Tenchu" just vaguely symbolized it being a shinobi style game. Same as IIRC Dark Souls or Demon's Souls having the codename "sth sth RPG". (Bloodborne was straight up called "Sony Project" or sth like that)

From never made tenchu, they published it. K2 LLC made it.
I dont get why people dont know the difference between publishing and developing

publisher is not developer. this is like saying SEGA developed Fatal Shadows because you see the logo on the box.
It has always been the work of Acquire and then eventually K2 LLC.
At any rate, I disagree -- I have yet to play Tenchu Z, but Shadow Assassins as the last canonical entry in the series left a bad taste in my mouth. Did not like the new style of playing as much, or how Ayame looks, nor did I like the fact that the Princess was killed off. Rikimaru being seen as a traitor for a short while was somewhat interesting on paper, however.

That part is understood. When you see posts like that a lot, very few of those times are they made by someone who knows that From are just the rights holders. I see it a lot, mainly due to the fact that From software now publishes and develops their games.

Its weird because back before Souls I always associated them with the Tenchu series for some reason. I guess because they were publishing the games? But this was back then before Souls became popular. I also played and owned Tenchu 1-3 at least so it makes it even stranger imo. It almost feels like a mandela effect thing. Could have sworn for sure they were the devs but it just wasn't the case. Seeing that Activision logo on WOH is very strange lol. I loved that game back then.

Yeah so Acquire created it. Sony Japan Music published the first Tenchu for Japan and Activision for America. The game was actually a success and is estimated to have sold 5 million as of 2019. This is according to wikipedia. As for the rest of the games well they've been passed around a whole lot but I guess From eventually got ownership of the series seems around the time of the third game?

      >Tenchu Z
It's got the best gameplay in the series, but has little to no story or unique content. Just a handful of levels repeating with different objectives. It really feels like K2's attempt at aping Shinobido. (Which was already kinda shitty on the content front to begin with.)
      >Shadow Assassins
It's fricking weird how they finally gave the IP back to Acquire, only for them to put a bunch of literally who's in charge of T4, instead of the people that made Shinobido (who were og T1&2 creators).

not him but probably, i am willing to admit that. however, its never fun to discuss or share things with others when the barrier to entry becomes paper thin. you'll be in the company of people who do not have the same passion or more as you, more often than not, and discourse goes through the gutter. sometimes, this shit even finds its way to the developers. for me, personally, this experience was Yakuza and the shift in things pre and post 0's localized release. threads and fanbase have never been the same, people turn their nose up at the originals in favor of the remakes, and RGG studios pander to 0gays.

Endo wasn’t involved with Wrath of Heaven and Fatal Shadows, and those were among the best games in the series.

I feel like Wrath of Heaven and Shinobido are an interesting point of comparison because they’re so similar, yet so different. Shinobido is a more ambitious and content dense game, but lacks polish and refinement. Wrath of Heaven on the other hand barely innovates at all, but is polished to a mirror sheen and is a much tighter experience.

          >Calling anyone tourist while defending your aborted cinematic Tenchu Souls
You will never be a real Ninja game. You have no missions, you have no stealth, you have no grades. You are a Souls clone twisted by Miyazaki and Activision into a crude mockery of Acquire’s perfection.
All the “validation” you get is two-faced and half-hearted. Behind your back Tenchu fans mock you. Your Daimyo are disgusted and ashamed of you, your “friends” laugh at your ghoulish QTEs behind closed doors.
Ninjas are utterly repulsed by you. Thousands of years of evolution have allowed Ninjas to sniff out frauds with incredible efficiency. Even Souls clones who “pass” look uncanny and unnatural to a Ninja. Your deflection system is a dead giveaway. And even if you manage to get a drunk lord home with you, he’ll turn tail and bolt the second he gets a whiff of your diseased, useless axe prosthetic.
You will never be happy. You hug a wall every single morning and tell yourself it’s going to be ok, but deep inside you feel the depression creeping up like a mountain bear, ready to crush you under the unbearable weight.
Eventually it’ll be too much to bear - you’ll buy a rope, tie a noose, put it around your neck, and plunge into the cold abyss. Your Lord will find you, heartbroken but relieved that he no longer has to live with the unbearable shame and disappointment.
They’ll bury you in a Wikipedia page marked with your dev team, and every passerby for the rest of eternity will know a Souls clone is recorded there. Your download page will be delisted and go back to dust, and all that will remain of your legacy is a gameplay video that is unmistakably Souls.
This is your fate. This is what you chose. There is no turning back.

Sekiro was at its best when it was more Tenchu than Souls. Still, I’m surprised at how shallow Sekiro’s stealth mechanics were considering that it was originally conceived as a Tenchu game.

I don't really agree with that, Wrath of Heaven feels really clunky compared to Shinobido 1 and doesn't feel particularly polished, if anything for some things it feels like a step back from Tenchu 2 even, the melee system in particular feels noticeably sluggier compared to how smooth Tenchu 2 was, even the movement is more similar to Tenchu 1 than Tenchu 2 and that's not a particularly good thing imo.
Fatal Shadows was pretty great though, but you could see that a lot of improvements were taken straight from Shinobido, it really was something of love child between the two IPs.
Shinobido's main issue to me is that even after so many games the movement feels really floaty compared to the more weighty and precise Tenchu movement, granted the movement options themselves are much better than any Tenchu game but there's some issues in terms of precision that Tenchu didn't have, especially when it comes to wall jumping, the lack of variety in executions compared to Tenchu game is also kind of a letdown but you also have more features in other parts of the game.

I wish Shinobido 2 would be ported on pc.

It's fully playable on Vita3K currently, there's still an annoying bug regarding most SFX getting muted under certain conditions and some odd frame drops during certain executions, but other than that it's fully playable from start to finish.
The SFX bug is really annoying though since there's a lot of sound cues in the game, it will probably be fixed soon considering how fast the emulator's development is going lately.

              Anonymous

Is Vita emulation demanding in terms of specs? If no, then I am dropping all games I'm currently playing for that sweet Shinobido 2 action.

                Anonymous

Not really, it's just that the emulator is still not quite there so the list of games that actually work is still pretty short, give it another year or two and it will probably be pretty functional.

              Anonymous

The precision is exactly what I mean when I say that WoH is more polished. You can make pixel perfect jumps in WoH very easily because of how smooth the movement controls are. That’s much harder to do in Shinobido because of the floatier movement and also the fact that Goh and Kinu run like they’re on ice. Also, WoH has much better combat and boss design too. I don’t think I’ve ever beaten any of the bosses in Shinobido without just cheesing them in some way. Whereas, I’ve fought every boss in WoH with no items and without taking damage.

Funnily enough, I also disagree that Shinobido has less variety in executions. In fact, it has way more. In WoH, you have a back kill, a side kill, a front kill, an aerial kill and a different elevation kill. 5 stealth kill types per character. In Shinobido on the other hand, you have all that (minus the side kill), plus a corner kill, a door kill, a ledge kill, a drowning kill, and a kill for when an enemy is eating an item. That’s 9 stealth kills per character in total.

Like I say, both games excel in different ways. Shinobido is better as a ninja RP simulator, whereas WOH is better as a brutally hard arcadey stealth game.

                Anonymous

WoH had only five types of executions?
I guess I've been remembering things wrong, maybe I've been mistaking it for the later games in the series, even 2 had seven types after all.

            >surprised at how shallow Sekiro’s stealth mechanics were
In addition to that, one of Sekiros weaknesses is the perk system that has some stealth boosts that trivialize the whole thing. I really wish there was a charm or so that let enemies be ultra aware like in Souls games, so you would be constantly fighting. Can't believe there isn't a mod for that.
Fighting ganks in Sekiro is so much better than Elden Boring.

              Anonymous

I feel Sekiro needed a bigger focus on stealth. Stealth really just amounts to thinning out mobs so you have an easier time with the combat, or instakilling a problematic enemy so you don’t have to fight them.

One thing I find weird is that Ghost of Tsushima came out a year later, and feels way closer to being a Tenchu game despite being a western game with no affiliation to Tenchu.

Dark Souls was the spiritual sequel that fixed many of its issues. Sekiro is a soulless action-adventure with no real meat and every gameplay idea diverging from it liie Stealth was just half assed and lazily implemented.. Even Dark Souls and Elden Ring obliterate Sekiro in combat depth with many more options as well as enemies and are massive ARPGs with huge build variety and hundreds of different weapons to which the enemy reacts differently. Those games do single stage combat far better, you can mix it up with spells and buffs and use several options. If I wanted something that doesn't have the intricate ARPG systems of From games and focused on weapon identity I would also boot up Nioh. At least you aren't playing along some developers intended coreography rhythm game bullshit
