It just had the misfortune of being a SE property during the timeframe where they couldn't make big new games
It still kept on trucking regardless and didn't really depend on the numbered entries, so it could've been worse

      Similar here.
I didn't exactly "wait" for KH3 since I thought KH2 was a great ending and wasn't interested in any of the following games besides BBS.
When KH3 came out, I played it and it just really missed the mark on what I liked about the PS2 games. KH3 wasn't a sequel to KH2, it was a sequel to all the non-numbered titles I didn't bother with. It also felt more interested in squel-baiting than actually resolving the storylines from previous games

        >It also felt more interested in squel-baiting than actually resolving the storylines from previous games
This is the thing I hated the most. Kingdom Hearts has had some mechanically underwhelming games but I still liked them. People have b***hed at BBS ad nauseam but I still played every route twice. I can forgive mechanical issues as long as it's good enough. Narratively Kingdom Hearts is utterly insane. But everyone already knows that. It's a JRPG featuring Disney characters, the fact that the plot borderlines on comprehensible is good enough. Because at the end of the day all of it was going somewhere. Kingdom Hearts 3 was the big finale that would've made all of it worth it. Just to get there and realize it was tainted because Nomura STILL can't let go of the memory of Versus 13.

For reference even if you did not give a flying frick about Foretellers or Dandelions or Luxu playing 5D chess with all of humanity. On a practical level the Disney Worlds ended up being pointless bullshit. The Final Fantasy characters are MIA unless you bought the DLC at which point they're still worthless. The big bad tried to have a face turn at the last second which meant nothing unless you played 2 mobile titles. It's just that all of this shit hurts a lot more when you invested a decade into waiting to see where this goes.

No the combat director was fired because his battle system was too complex for people who only play Skyrim, Mass Effect, Uncharted, Assassin's Creed, and Call of Duty. I don't think he left out of choice before Duscae.

Somehow this included Hajime Tabata, and zoomers and journalists alike praised FFXV's combat for being very simple and easy to get into.

3 was a good slap in the face to me with the series. I don't care anymore about any of the characters, especially Sora. If it was a new protagonist and new cast of characters I may be more interested. On top of that, the combat looks like 3 only flashier. And it will have Star Wars. 3 had me one foot out the door, and with 4 I no longer care. Sucks because I liked KH up till now. I played almost all the games.

I think the games usually play well, especially 1 and 2. The switch to the new engine must have messed things up. Even the 0.2 demo/game didn't play as bad as 3. I don't get how they messed it up so bad.

Crappy combat and clusterfrick story that needed to be "fixed" in a paid DLC expansion
Also most of the game is spent in godawful disney worlds for no reason
Basically every flaw the series already had, but magnified and without any saving grace to distract from it

      in terms of story
      >DDD irrevocably fricked the story by incorporating time travel. This meant for KH3 all the bad guys who you already defeated are back because nonsense reasons. Also some of the nobodies who got recompleted got renobodied again just so they could be villains again.
      >Disney worlds don't really seem to tie into the main story at all
      >Everyone was anticipating finding out what was in the box and that still hasn't been answered. A literal mystery box and they didn't open it.

      in terms of gameplay
      >animations feel choppier and rougher compared to KH2
      >keyblade formchanges are a good idea implemented terribly. Instead of being like DMC weapons where you can switch between them to do fun combos, you have to fill a meter to perform them and almost all of them are just the same button mashy shit. Also a good number of formchanges are outright copy+pasted
      >twilight town is significantly smaller than it was in KH2 for some reason
      >some of the Disney worlds are pretty lackluster. Frozen was terrible and broke the cardinal rule of not having the actual Disney songs in the game for some reason. The story is also unfollowable unless you've seen the movie. Big Hero Six is just open/empty meme. Tangled is just samey with very few actual locations from the movie, it's mainly just nondescript forest. There's also no second visits.

Re:mind made the combat a bit better and added some dope superbosses but KH3 on launch was pretty rough.

The gameplay and power levels have gotten more and more larger than life with every game, so while idiots who only play the numbered entries expected more KH2 from 3, they instead got a spectacle extravaganza with a focus on a ton of small tools that send you flying around like Yoda fighting Dooku instead of standing your ground and fighting in a way that resembles a swordsman.
Story-wise, all the games prior to KH3 sucked up all the narrative KH3 could have had so when tasked with rationalizing the climb from level 1 to 40, the writers...Did nothing until the end, leaving the first 80% of the game feeling like a training montage without the merciful jump cuts to later events.

It doesn't have a plot. It's a 40 hour game where they tell you at the start "You're going to fight this bad guy", and then there are zero twists and turns, and at the end you fight that bad guy and that's it. It's not even like it's a journey to find him or something. You can only play the first level and the last level and you will have missed nothing. It's a fun game, but it's entirely forgettable because the whole thing feels like DLC level packs.

I don’t think KH3 is a bad game (far from it, in fact) but it’s not as mechanically cohesive as KH2FM was. KH3’s combat being more “floaty” doesn’t bother me when you have defensive options in the air unlike in the other Osaka games, but it does bother me when stuff like the Disney rides exist that feel out of place with the rest of KH3’s mechanics (though thankfully you can turn them off in Critical thanks to patches)
      >”Okay, so we have a combat system that rewards player aggression and being able to react and interact to/with attacks in an instant. What else should we add?”
      >“I dunno, just give em an interactive mini game that just has you pressing one button and interrupting gameplay flow.”
It also doesn’t help that a lot of Sora’s toolset tends to fall into this category. For example, in KH2FM, summons don't strip away player agency as Sora can still attack and do all the shenanigans inherent to his toolkit. The combat continues to stay immediate, active, and the flow is never interrupted. This is why I didn’t particularly like it when KH3 took the overcinematic route and made summons and limits cutscenes/button prompt minigames. It's less engaging, at least for me, to have my moveset be stripped away for some mindless single button mashing, excluding Stitch and Ralph, but even that is boring. Not to mention Shotlocks bring the pacing of a fight to a screeching halt if you choose to use them and Situation Commands are somewhat random as the exact same sequence of attacks and magic can end in different results.

No offense dude but I’m getting tired of the “wait for the rerelease defense.” Even after ReMind, several of Sora’s toolkit still remains AoE focused in the base game with no real cohesion between the mechanics.

After BBS the series' ongoing plot was incredibly threadbare and pretty much consisted of hyping up that something cool will happen at the conclusion to this "saga", while using the 80% of each game made up of disney shit as nothing but filler between an introduction and a climax. People deluded themselves into thinking it was all building to something big in 3 and not that this is just how Nomura does stories, and were then given a reality check when 3 turned out to be more of the same but with the climax of the mobile game's story instead of 3 as the big "something cool will happen" point.

another case of Duke Nukem Forever - people have been waiting for it for SO LONG that their expectations were impossible to satisfy

      >KH3 development was given to Osaka team, who wasted one year with Luminous engine (aka Versus) only to give up and switch to UE4 (because only Tokyo team was able to work with Luminous)
      >the plot bloat between KH2 and KH3 (Days / Coded / BBS / DDD / 0.2) was much bigger than between KH1 and KH2 (CoM), all because KH3 couldn't be made earlier due to Tokyo team working on Versus
      >FF part of the series was completely dropped (until people whined enough for Nomura to bring them back in Remind)
      >Disney part of the series is still pretty much irrelevant after KH1 and never does anything important to actual plot
      >OC worlds are pretty much gone (Twilight Town lost 80% of its content, Radiant Garden is outright unplayable, Land of Departure is still one room world, Keyblade Graveyard got even worse than in BBS and turned into FFXIII's corridor galore, Realm of Darkness is still unexplorable) - the days of Traverse Town / End of the World / TWTNW are long gone
      >first 95% of the game are filler in terms of plot
      >game was piss easy on release due to lack of Critical Mode, and Critical Mode punish magic builds way too hard (so people just abuse Summons instead)
      >majority of plotlines were resolved in very unsatisfying way

I mean, the world of "Fiction" has been introduced, which is the land of the truly dead and misfit toys. He's just sticking Yozora in as a reference to XIII being his baby and being dead, thus elements of the version of FF15 that never was would be here, along with all the other ideas that got binned before their time.

Why would you like the dullest game franchise in the history of game franchises? Seriously each installment following the boy with an oversized key and his boyfriend Riku as they fight assorted silver haired villains in Disney worlds has been indistinguishable from the others. Aside from the not so subtle allegories to the real world, the series’ only consistency has been its lack of excitement and over-use of exposition, all to make intrigue uninteresting, to make action seem inert.

Perhaps the die was cast when Nomura brought Xehanort back to life at the end of Dream Drop Distance; he made sure whatever he made from then on would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody. Just ridiculously profitable crap to shit out for whenever he needs a quick pay-check. The Kingdom Hearts series might be anti-darkness (or not), but it’s certainly the anti-Falcom series in its refusal of wonder, beauty and excitement. No one wants to face that fact. Now, thankfully, they no longer have to.

    >A-at least the bosses are good

    “No!”

The programming is dreadful; the games were terrible. Graviga+Stop spam is enough to break the game. As I played, I noticed that every time a character lost their heart, the author wrote instead "heartless." I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that phrase was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Nomura’s mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that he has no other style of writing. Later I read a lavish, loving review of the Kingdom Hearts series by the same Toshihiro Kondo. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are playing Kingdom Hearts at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to play The Legend of Heroes: Kuro no Kiseki." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you play "Kingdom Hearts" you are, in fact, trained to play Kiseki.

The Nomura/Nojima tandem only works out when kept on a tight leash.
When left to their devices they go way too hard on their convoluted plot/timetravel/clone fetishes.

Original FF VII already had those elements, but the compilation games and KH series allowed them to go full throttle on those, and then they turned FF VII Remake into Kingdom Hearts, white time jannies, time-traveling multiple Xehan- err Sephiroths.

I hope they never get FF X-3 greenlit.

Using an entire decade to shit out KH3 will do that to your series. Its abundantly clear to anyone who gives a shit that it isnt worth waiting for, since youre waiting for more shit that tries to tell you the series needs to go on for longer. KH3 plays well, it's just you get nothing worth fighting until post launch gave critical mode and re:mind gave you the datas it suffers from the story and content being loaded all the way into the back of the game. Everyone saying the game is dead because it was floaty parroting content creators was hilarious though because that was a non issue.

When are we likely to get news next? It was nice to finally get the rest of Dark Road, but that only gave a slight idea of what might be happening next.
