great game. hated the fact that hitting enemies takes your hp, fricking bullshit.

I beat it recently. It's not so bad if you can mix up the basic attacks before they auto into special ones, which do damage you. The best "custom" move you can pick is the shaolin kick, which can knock out doors/crates really quick with minimal HP loss.

      >hitting enemies takes your hp
Streets of Rage does that also, as well as many other belt scrollers.

      >hitting enemies takes your hp
It only happens with some of the moves dummy, like with most regular beat 'em ups

Very memorable, but very short and easy to master. Back in the day I would have probably said it was worth a rental at most, but given how unique it is even today it's definitely worth owning.

Also I always say this in CZ threads but the Genesis' sound hardware was MADE for grunge.

      >but very short and easy to master

The levels are all pretty large and have several different routes each, and there's a lot of hidden stuff to find. Building the optimal route takes quite a bunch of tries. It's no worse than any other game, it just doesn't have as much replay value as a straight brawler due to all the puzzles that wouldn't work right in a co-op mode.

There's basically two routes per "page", so it's not that much in terms of replayability since you can see the whole thing in two playthroughs. Plus, most of the non-combat situations have only one "good" solution, and there's no item randomization or anything to introduce variety: you get what you need and the appropriate places to use it effectively. Even the combat, which is at first glance very sophisticated in terms of moves, heavily limits the effectiveness of each depending on the enemy you're facing.

Don't get me wrong, it's a game totally worth playing and going back to every now and then, but for me it's kind of how I sometimes feel like replaying point-and-click adventures: you get a reliably specific familiar experience out of it, but nothing that will suddenly challenge you because you might get a combination of elements you hadn't experienced before.

This. But it has to be because it looks amazing and all of it is hand-crafted. Meaning it has to be 30 minutes long and nonstop gotcha shit.

The guys who made pic related would make a proper remake/sequel that could be looked at with nothing but respect

Just shoulder bash shit or shaolin kick it. Also, even if you're somehow low enough, there's a little cap on the damage you can take on objects which prevents you from dying.

Me and the bros couldn't beat it back in the day, think we got as far as the chink with long nails. You're always low on HP and the game is unforgiving.

I ended up beating it only years later on an emulator.

But it isn't fun at all, is it? It's just nonsensically hard and not amusing to go through.

I remember always wanting to play this, but I didn't have a Genesis (And I had no idea emulation existed back then).

Then I recall my mother telling me this value store started carrying random PC software, mostly games. It was a very low chance but I decided to see if by some miracle they had Comix Zone.

    They did.

I SUCKED at it. No idea if the PC port was just clunky.

... kept going back there every week or so to pick up random games since they were a few bucks. Almost all of them were old (For the early 00s at least) and games I had never heard of, but hey, they were cheap and most worked on my ancient Pentium 1. None as good a find as Comix Zone but there were a few gems I also remember fondly like Whiplash, Companions of Xanth, and Dust: A Tale of The Wired West.

... someday I should go back and beat Comix Zone without PC cheats, especially since I finally have a Genesis now.

It looks great, the concept is great but the movement and the hitboxes are wonky as frick and the gameplay doesn't feel polished. It's clunky.

I absolutely love Comix Zone with my only faults with it being that it's quite short and you never get a true final boss match as Super Sketch like my child's mind imagined when seeing that super meter build up after every act. Regardless it's a fantastic concept they we needed to be expanded on in a Saturn or DC sequel.

A Saturn sequel using the system's 2D muscle and a basic 3D framework to present the pages and panel layouts could have been great. Sega's patent lapsed a decade ago or so iirc, it would be nice to see somebody pulling off a "spiritual sequel" if a direct followup isn't on the table.

I like it, it's more of a puzzle game than a beat'emup but most people do not approach it with this concept and never figure out how to use the rat and such (at least from what i've seen). The music makes me love it.

The only downside I'd say is it suffers a bit on replay. Heavily scripted, very few alt paths, and the combat is mostly a puzzle to be solved. So when you know what is required, you just do it, and win.
