It's weird to see what became of the game. When it came out, I thought it was a popular game like any other, since the only news was stuff like Nintendo Power. At the time it was just a novel RPG for being actual kids in a modern day setting, and the personality in the presentation.

        >What a load of nonsense, it's a timeless game.
Yes it is, but that first impact left a really particular impression because of the time and place. I'm not puffing the game up, the same thing has happened with a ton of other games of further times ahead. I'd say the same for anyone who got to play Mother 3 as a kid.

        Anonymous

Nah, it hits harder from the perspective of a kid. The opening sequence was like the ultimate power fantasy for an 10-year old because you got to STAY UP LATE and SNEAK AROUND OUTSIDE, which is a remotely plausible scenario

It was easy for me to draw parallels between the characters, dungeons, and towns with locales that I knew IRL. The root of fantasy lies in possibilities, at it was easier to imagine yourself getting on a bus to go to NYC by yourself because your parents gave you a credit card rather than being in a complete fantasy world

By the time I turned 11 I had in my head my own series of "sanctuary" locations in my head. Such as the husk of a ship that was sunken off a nearby beach, which I eventually swam to just to sit. And also a WW2 bunker that was buried in the sand which I eventually got into. Although that was more of a dungeon.

It was also the first thing that made me conscious of the fact that my parents were once younger and put aside their old lives to have kids

Something like Onett is as foreign to zoomers today as it was to Japan in the 80s.

yeah see this is exactly what Earthbound did to you if you played it as a kid when it came out, it gave you a weird eye for wanting to find places of intense personal significance and some natural majestic quality, and lots of weirdly plausible fantasies (What if you parents actually loved you and LISTENED to you, despite knowing how bad it'll be?)

It just did something nothing else did, or could.

        Kind of, yes.

On the other hand when I was a kid playing it I kept a save file at the Winters boarding school segment and played it over and over, because I wished I could live away from my parents and in a remote snowy place where I could be with other nerds and be respected for my schoolwork

The historical context of Earthbound has gotten a little lost over time, but it's boost in popularity didn't just come from Smash by any means, although it definitely helped.

At the time of this game's release it was very rare for an RPG to have a modern setting. Most of them still had a fantasy/medieval one. Earthbound taking place in 80's America with modernized equips and items was completely new. It also has a lot of influence from sci-fi film and literature, which gives it a really unique experience. The combat also holds up surprisingly well. In reality, the game is really just that good. If you go back and play it today you will have the same full experience as when it came out. You can't really say that for Ice Climber or the first Kid Icarus which also got the smash bonus.

I think this game was destined to make it big whether it appeared in Smash or not, although it would have taken a bit longer to blow up. Add that it spawned a whole subgenre of indie games, its legacy is cemented.

Yeah, you're an idiot, though I dont expect much from Ganker. The average person doesnt consider Kaczynski's message unless they put a lot of time into actually thinking about it. Of course all the townspeople arent going to go "wow everything sure does suck now" because that wouldnt reflect real life. The town community began to fall part, people locked their doors, and people worked meaningless jobs only to blow their wages at the club. If you actually paid attention to how the modernization of Tazmily treated the older people and how they wanted to demolish Oshoe castle and make a resort, Ted's message rings completely true. As the island was being corralled into New Pork City, people began to see everything was all just a facade.
Itoi obviously doesnt like modernity and how it ruined the community aspects of society, literally what Kaczynski wrote about.

When this came out on VC I finally decided to emulate it on an actually good emulator and to be honest it's fricking bad.

Boring as all hell and both the jokes and drama don't land. It's "Japanese Humor" mixed with the same old JRPG melodrama.

Undertale blows it out of the fricking water. Most "inspired by [x]" games like "boomer shooters" fricking suck but the good games that are "inspired by Earthbound" are MILES better than Earthbound itself.

To be honest you need really high IQ to understand and love the Mother series, something most Family Guy watchers don't really have.

        Anonymous

Flint goes apeshit and starts attacking nice people because his wife died. These nice people are mostly useless homosexuals that couldn't help in putting out a forest fire since they depend on him way too much hough so that probably didn't help his ego.
Flint himself is also not really a good person and is a frick up father. He's reclusive, essentially abandons his remaining family, and there are hints that he might have been physically abusive, but that last part is the most up to interpretation thing about him.

          Anonymous

To me that seemed like trauma from the campfire event. Flint is more a tragic character than a villain, he is mindbroken and cannot cope with reality

            Anonymous

The whole Lucas abandonment absolutely is trauma.
The reclusive bit, not so much. There are hints here and there that show he doesn't really want to be around anyone but his family. The death of his wife amplified it immensely though.

            [...]
he's the duality of strong men who break, and by the end you see why he's broken even if you don't like him

I've always liked the idea of an active element in JRPGs that isn't just waiting for an ATB bar to fill up. Bravely Default had a system where you could do buffed uncapped damage for as long as the buff music was going on. This meant literally just menuing as fast as you possibly can, similar to how the rolling health bars work in the Mother series

Yes, you're going to be disappointed. Mother 3 is completely inferior to the other two games in every way possible. You'd be getting a pretty sour impression of the Mother series by starting out with the third game. Trust me, I've been on that same route before. With her PSI powers stuck to blue-palette only, so no Fire or Thunder. Plus a lot of trying to stop her from escalating every situation. It had a decent sized cult following that made a shit load of passion filled fan content based around it (my favorite is Fobbys are not Borange) and eventually a decent amount of those same people went on to go establish themselves in the gaming community as a whole (Undertale is the most famous one tbh).

Also it's nowhere near as obscure as you're pretending and the meme that no one ever played it is moronic and just wrong. A lot of people saw it in Smash 64 and checked it out once emulation got big. Then you throw in various early youtubers that would later get pretty big playing it and citing it as a favorite of theirs (HCbaily and Chugga are two to come to mind) and that led to becoming more popular as well. Then Undertale blew the frick up and hey, guess what, Toby was an old EB figure.

People will fricking shit themselves for me saying this but Mother 1 has aged like crap. It has all the worst part of NES era RPGs in full force (mostly the endless endless grind). Mother 3 meanwhile is different enough that it doesn't feel that way.
