I honestly and legitimately cannot resist doing this. I will do it every single fricking time. I will do it with randos. I will do it with friends I have known for decades. I will do it even when they are losing their patience with me and I swear I've gotten it out of my system. I will cry with laughter every single time. I want to stop but I can't stop. Is it just me? Is there something wrong with me? How do you resist the urge? I get the same urges when a teammate has his back to me and I can see their head bobbing around in my crosshairs, knowing a single press of a button will deliver me amusement and warm feelings, but I can resist. But put the lives of a full squad in my hands and give me the means to take them from 1000 feet to underground in the blink of an eye? I'm just not strong enough.

dutch airline pilot is forced down at some hellhole island and decides HE GAAN when it wasn't his flights turn to go and conditions were so foggy he couldn't see 100 feet in front of him. he ended up killing most of the people on his flight and the other flight.

i'd recommend watching the "seconds from disaster" episode on the disaster at tenerife since there are too many grim details, it's one of the best documentaries about the event, despite being directed in a shitty TV format

two planes had their landings diverted to an airport on the island of tenerife due to a terrorist threat at their initial destination airport, neither of them were really supposed to be there in the first place.
pilots had some communication errors due to language boundaries, and there was a thick fog covering the island at the time of the accident, one of the pilots started taxing onto a runway that another plane was landing on due to misinterpreting a command as an OK to start takeoff. they couldn't see each other due to the fog, subsequently collided, and nearly everyone was killed. the landing plane failed to pull back up, throttled so hard the plane dipped and dragged its tail on the runway before the collision. it ripped the grounded plane in half, and ripped the roof entirely off. if this hadn't happened the few remaining survivors in the rear of the plane likely wouldn't have been able to climb out, because within 50 seconds to 2 minutes, the wreckage was entirely engulfed in flames.

keep in mind this is an island, so relief efforts didn't arrive very promptly.

one final sorry detail is the fact that the KLM pilot Jacob van Zanten was such an experienced pilot, he was the poster child of KLM, and appeared in all of their marketing. after the disaster, KLM went looking for him to investigate the accident, only to realize that he was the captain.

I loved getting high up in a helicopter, bashing the tail rotor off on the side of a tall skyscraper, and trying to see how long I could keep the helicopter in the air. You could hold it up for a VERY long time if you were careful with the controls.

Pretty sure most people just blame the lack of communications standards among flight crews and ATC at the time which was why they decided to adopt a standardised language and terms for acknowledging transmissions.

        Anonymous

Oh yeah, that was why the accident happened and eventually the lack of standards for communication / transmission acknowledge would have caused another accident somewhere else.
Anon is wrong because that terrorist group wasn't unscathed; it dissolved one year later due to losing all of its support due to the disaster.

His death was a cover up to save the image of the airline and his family. An insider said he lived and he just walked away after the accident. His last words before disappearing were "dispose of the bodies and pay me. My job here is done"
