pre-N64 Zelda
if LA hadn't come out earlier you might have been right
Most of N64 Zelda's music is from older Zelda games though
>Zelda II
>10/10
>terrible music
dark world from alttp is one of the most iconic tracks in video game history, what are you smoking
closest i got could be tekken. but it for sure isn't 10/10
This is also the closest I could come up with. Most of the time game music is inoffensive at worst but T7's ost is pretty shit, especially when it goes full WUB WUB WUB
yeah for sure
Tekken 4 has the greatest video game soundtrack of all time, tekken generally has the best soundtracks.

ENTER
The times it did Ambient, SMT IV pulled it off super well. The Blasted:
And Infernal pieces:
are a great example of Dark Ambient in vidya. There's also this, which is just a fricking banger:
lol meant to reply to
V's OST was was so shit compared to IV / A. what a shame. Not like it's an easy task to top or even match it however.
blatant lie
it certainly had its parts that were stuck on the theme, but there were also a lot of mixups
Such a great ost for a great game
The boss theme having more views on youtube than its total sales is criminal
>he doesn't like NO BODY NO EARS NO NOSE NO MOUTH NO BODY NO MIND NO SHAPE NO SHAPE
okay actually you might have a point...
Tekken 7 is the only Tekken where I feel the music kinda sucks
tekken 5 had some bangers tho
tricky one usually it's the reverse
Divinity Original Sin 1
I legitimately hope you come to great personal harm
It wasn't terrible, but it was tonally all over the fricking place. The most commonly heard battle music seemed more like it was meant for the Halloween-themed level in a cartoony 3D platformer than a sword-and-sorcery CRPG.
It seems all over the place because the guy who composed DOS1's OST used a bunch of his old band's songs or songs from different projects including bits that weren't officially released in the soundtrack.
Not all of the songs are reused though. That being said I agree with the other Anon, the soundtrack is legitimately good it's just not as melodically consistant as DOS2's soundtrack is.
>the soundtrack is legitimately good
There's a few stinkers in there, though. The one that immediately comes to mind is the tavern music, which sounded like fricking Yub Nub from Return of the Jedi.
how fricking dare you
DUM DI DE DUM DI DE DA DUM DI DE DAEEEE
>dos1 being 10/10
lol
youre right its an 11
I wouldn’t say it was “bad”, but it sure was out of place.
>be in spooky dark dungeon
>uplifting orchestral music plays
The frick?
quake 1
ambience is bad and im tired of pretending otherwise
Doom 2. Bobby Prince should have stuck to stealing Pantera and Slayer riffs.
homosexual
>doom 2
>1/3 of the levels are sandy peterson trying to do way more than what he's capable with the engine
Honestly you can call Doom 2 a 10/10 just for how great the monsters they added were (which is what has sustained Doom mapping to this day)
But yeah some of the levels are kinda shoddy
what games actually pull off ambient well aside from Jeremy Soule's works?
Mirrors Edge (Solar Fields) did a great job of it imo
Damn I was going to say World of Warcraft but he worked on that too
most of FFXIV's field themes are pretty good ambient tracks
disco elysium
>God, please...
>Kim REALLY trusts you
unironically Chelden Ching
Minecraft
Jesper Kyd did great work on Blood Money
Metroid Prime trilogy
Rain World? Not sure if it technically qualifies as ambient but the OST certainly kicks ass.
nuxcom does a great job at that, there is certain tension when you move across the map and can't see any aliens for a few turns and the ambient music is fantastic
RDR1
2 was such a disappoint partly on this aspect
Persona 5 Royal https://youtu.be/kexqSlkVTf0
This is lounge/lofi garbage, not ambient. Typical personybro
utterly dogshit opinion
Personas 3 4 and 5
Only kiddies who watched a edited lets play on youtube enjoy it, if you actually play the game the music becomes so grating and obnoxious
what a garage opinion, holy hell
wrong, j-pop is based
Engrish JPOP is not. The singer for persona song couldn't pronounce a single English word correctly.
have a nice day
Imagine liking Persona 5s godawful vocal themes.
Very, very fricking wrong opinion my friend.
Persona 3 sucked ass both game play and music wise.
you got the thread question backwards
based. Persona is low test overall and that especially applies to the soundtrack
>mfw YOU'LL NEVER SEE IT COMING for the nth time
Nah, only people you're describing thinks it's grating and obnoxious. If you play the game long enough it really grows on you, like some kind of stockholm syndrome.
TE-E-LL ME WHYYY YOU DID IT
EV-E-RY THING FALLING APART
This Black person thinks SNOWFLAKES is a bad song. Legitimately have a nice day.
Bait
P5 Soundtrack is horrid. Doesn't help that people who liie P5 also thinks Persona invented fricking fusion jazz and is a musical masterpiece. "You never see it coming" is ok for like once-twice.
I will never get the hype for p5, tried it a bit and didn't think it was too interesting. Felt like someone tried to cover game's flaws with style and flashy lights.
There's no such thing as a 10/10 with a terrible attribute.
The closest thing is a 9/10 with terrible music, which is actually a pretty rare category. I can't think of a game that fits, but I'm sure it must be out there.
Metroid Bread
Devil Survivor
pokémon yellow
Can't think of any examples, but Hard West 2 comes close. Everything was improved over Hard West 1 except the music. How the frick do you go from Marcin Przybyłowicz composing your soundtrack to whatever random butthole they got for part 2?
>game is perfect
>but has imperfection
I think most critics will agree that no game (or whatever else) is truly perfect, but you can round up to a 10/10 rating if it's deserving enough
Call me nuts but I felt that. Order of Ecclesia was a step back in the ost department compared to the previous Castlevania games.
Slay The Spire and Hand Of Fate 2 are games I'd consider to be 10/10 but their soundtracks are painfully generic and I've never had to urge to listen to them outside the game
Who gives a frick about music? Mute it in the options and open up your own playlist. If it's not a rhythm game; then who honestly gives a frick? Such a homosexual thing to care about. have a nice day
>who gives a frick about music
Uncultured moron.
If the music was terrible, the game wouldn't be 10/10 you fricking moron.
I never listen to in game music if I have a choice. It's nice gaming on PC
I love the Souls games but the music outside of 1 or 2 songs usually sucks. I turn it off every playthrough after the first.
As much as I love the games, the Jak and Daxter series never had great music. I can only really remember the Haven City track that played when you were just moving around there. The rest is kinda forgettable.
Souls games, a lot of the music just sounds like grating discordant OOOOHHHHing or is painfully unremarkable.
I'd also nominate KOTOR2, not because the whole OST is bad but just because the battle music specifically gets so fricking grating at times.
KOTOR2's soundtrack loses points for not giving Traya her own theme but also unfinished lol
but on the other hand:
>Souls games are a 10/10
Lmao they're 7/10 at best
This. Only Demon's Souls had an interesting soundtrack
Dunno if the music doesn't grab me I won't play it. It's why i can't play minecraft and daggerfall and a ton of other games
Minecraft has one of the best soundtracks ever made.
You have shit taste then
Dragon Quest XI. The original release used absolutely cancerous synth tracks. Unfortunately, even though S upgraded the tracks to orchestrated, there are only like five unique tracks in the game and it gets incredibly repetitive and terrible. It’s too bad, it’s the biggest blemish in what otherwise is an incredible game. I can’t find an example of the one I wanted (the knight chasing the hero and Erik in the field) but here’s another chase scene with the bad music.
>zoomer triggered over synth
The tracks aren't bad, a bit repetitive sure, but the actual compositions are ok.
The soundtrack being repetitive in a 100 hour JRPG is not good. If I'm already tired of the music after like 20 hours then that's really bad.
Nah it is inexcusable that they used an inferior version if the soundtrack when the orchestral versions were good to go at reason.
Reddit Quest 11 is 4/10 garbage, play a real DQ game you zoomer
Personally, if a game doesn't have good music, it's not a 10/10 game. Not saying it's can't be a 9, but it can't be a 10/10 with good music and overall sound design and sound engineering
Dragons dogma
Cave story
Monster Hunter
>cave story
You have to a depressed loser to think that soundtrack is bad.
I thought so too, at first, then later I realized it was because I played 400 hours in 2 months, not because the overworld music is bad.
It's not great, but it's not bad, and if I listen to it now almost half a year later, I enjoy the track and it's nostalgia.
Meant the Elden Ring overworld theme, not the Cave Story stuff, oops.
Agreed on DD.
Cave Story is mostly good, but now that I think of it, I can't remember a single song in it, so maybe its not quite as good as I am failing to remember.
MH has traditionally had a dogshit OST, but its definitely gotten better over the last several years starting with Generations. Great songs for monsters are-
>Mitsuzune
>Glavenus
>Magnamalo
>Malzeno
>Espinas (even though its technically an area theme)
Also Sunbreak's version of "Proof of a Hero" is the only iteration of the song that I actually like.
the Fatalis version from World was top-tier
>cave story ost
>unmemorable
you need to get your ears checked
>I can't remember a single song in it, so maybe its not quite as good as I am failing to remember.
Bullshit
Was gonna post this.
Not even my favorite track in the game but how could anyone forget this one?
Getting to the outer wall for the first time was an amazing moment and it was 80% because of that somber but hopeful music that completely sells the feel of the game at that point.
Most flagship themes are good or at least catchy. Except maybe Velkana's
For Cavestory it was the Core's theme that pops up in my mind from time to time.
>I can't remember a single song in it
the frick
>Monster Hunter
Excuse you?
The wind is not pushing you
>Monster Hunter
>music bad
genuinely trolling
>dragons dogma
>10/10
jesus christ get me off this site
dragon's dogma's music is fricking amazing what
Elden Ring was just alright but man does the ambient overworld music fricking blow
That's true for most games.
I can't remember a game with actually bad music
I would say the biggest problem is, mostly with western games, that all games want to create "atmospheric" music
So they always make the blandest and generic music ever
As example, look how God of War 2018 only has its theme as a decent song while the old PS2 games had a lot of bangers
Pathfinder Kingmaker has bad music, there you go
Didn't play this one, but do they at least try?
Or they do the classic ambience music but bad?
they try
they just fail
I see
I feel like most studios hire people that can at least make boring and generic music
It is hard to see a game with legit penis music
>I would say the biggest problem is, mostly with western games, that all games want to create "atmospheric" music
5000% agree with this.
This is why most of the time when I enjoy music in videogames 98% it is from a Japanese game because they actually try to make music and not just a background sound
No it's because you've been rejected by everyone in your life so much so, that you enjoy shit from half way around the world just to cope and also think that you're cultured in your autistic mind. Meanwhile the Japs hate your overweight, stinky white ass more than your own family and country does.
I hope all weebs get brutally raped and murdered to death.
You are acting like a psychologist because I said I like a type of music but I'm the one who has problems huh
Sure
>98% it is from a Japanese game because they actually try to make music and not just a background sound
I think I can guess what the other 2% is.
Don't know why you got shit on. I agree with your main point that there's too much focus on trying to just "blend in" to the background and mimic what you see in Hollywood "epic" films in movies. It was OK when it first came up, but now, to me, it's boring.
Yeah
They use this toned down style for 80% of the game and when they need to use an epic song is the most generic shit and sounds like it came from an Avengers movie
It is just awful
>Yeah
>They use this toned down style for 80% of the game and when they need to use an epic song is the most generic shit and sounds like it came from an Avengers movie
>It is just awful
This is why I feel like the last time Sony's composers were able to create real songs was when they did Bloodborne
Maybe Ghost of Tsushima but it is not a game with lots of songs
the Bloodborne composers work for From, not Sony
Nah
Bloodborne had other composers that don't work for From, this is why the songs are more diverse
I just don't know if they were freelancer or epecifically from Sony
you mean the white fellas? Just regular freelancers.
Anyway, it is interesting to see how because it is a From game those composers were free to make actual epic songs and not the toned down shit we see in every western game
Fromdrones are this delusional lol
Sure bro
I can't wait to play God Of War Ragnarok and only listen to one good song the whole game
Says the newf*g trying to fit in hating on Gankercore games. Get fricked. Up the ass. By me. I'm horny.
heheheh
I dunno, most of the standout music from BB is from From's full-time composers anyway
But it is sad because some composers of the best songs didn't return to do Elden Ring
Like who did Ludwig,Living Failures, gherman...
look up who composed Gehrman's theme then look up who composed the ER main theme
Makes sense
Mf composed the best song in ER
>it is from a Japanese game because they actually try to make music
I've noticed japs are pretty exceptional musicians in general.
If under unfortunate circumstances they were all turned into a slave race and I was in charge of it, I would probably task them to doing music and stuff
Yeah they are really good
If we look at famous Japanese composers almost all of them worked for Square at some point
And they still have a lot of talented people
there's different kinds of atmospheric music.
NES Metroid music is the furthest thing from catchy, but it's extremely atmospheric and very good. There's probably a better way to describe those generic orchestral soundtracks you're thinking of.
I know
I was mostly referring to this type you know I'm talking about
I love atmospheric music in jrpg games because they will create music to put you in that world, as the other anon said, LOTR also have incredible atmospheric music that don't need to be just background noises
elden ring
Any DMC game
MGR
YWNBAW
Vampire The Masquerade Bloodlines
Bait
I feel like a lot of western devs don't get how ambience music doesn't needs to sound low or toned down
Just pay attention to things like LOTR, the song while they run in open fields is epic as frick and is able to give to you the feel of adventure
Seems like only jrpgs were able to understand this
Seek help, my dude
Damn I replied to the wrong person, sorry
Seek help is for this one
a 10/10 game cant have bad music. sorry anon its just not possible
people play games with bad music?
my favorite game of all time had one and only one good track, here it is
homie is you crazy?
a true 10/10 cannot be 10/10 if the music is terrible moron
Not metroid
That game had some eerie music back in the day
League of Legends
ROCKET: ROBOT ON FRICKING WHEELS
The game's an incredible 3D platformer with some cool physics for its time but the OST lis literally muzak. Just listen to this.
Dragon Quest XI is the only game where I had this complaint, the music is so repetitive that I remember being annoyed by it even though I really like the game.
Everyone kinda feels the same
Sugiyama was better when he was younger
He got lazy and greedy
I wonder how the new songs in DQXII will sound like
WoW (pre-cata)
game is great but the music is almost entirely boring ambient shit
there's only like 2 or 3 songs in the entire game that are good, the rest is garbage
WoW has some of the best ambient music to date, get bent homosexual
Deus Ex.
Take your best shot, flatlander woman
It's not terrible but Metroid Dread is great in every department but sound.
None because if the music is bad then the game is not a 10/10.
Furi
Also Alien Soldier
holy fricking terrible taste
i'm honestly not sure if you misread the OP
Not him but I hate synthwave vaporwave shit that passes for music with retro gays. Frick furi and hotline Miami’s sound tracks
NTA, holy shittaste
I don't even enjoy synthwave and vaporwave that much but Furi has a godly soundtrack
you have bad taste
Don’t care. I will listen to lyrical early two thousands grunge rock and heavy metal while playing any action game.
What kinda heavy metal?
Better be thrash if you wanna redeem yourself.
power and progressive are the only good types of metal.
USPM or EUPM?
european. Specifically the italians and the germans
yikes
San Francisco Rush was a lot of fun but I usually played with the music off and just played my own.
Literally impossible
A good sound track is like half of the score. Completely changes how you feel about something
system shock 1
False
Deus Ex Human Revolution
but HR has a great soundtrack
Yeah it’s the original Deus Ex that has a terrible soundtrack.
>10/10
>music is terrible
How can something that is perceived as perfect have flaws? You're killing me OP.
But to answer your question Fallout: New Vegas. I'm not talking about the like, 8 songs on the radio. I mean the horrible screechy ambient strings that go off every minute or two.
Metroid Dread
If you want something old, MvC2 music was fine to listen for a few minutes, but it was extremely repetitive and got annoying really fast
How about 0/10 games with 10/10 soundtracks?
That's just le Tim Follin bait.
Metroid Dread.
What about games that are 1/10 but have 10/10 music?
Undertale
Not hard
A lot of shovelware japanese games
dont really care for them much but Silent Hill 1-3 has some incredible music. mainly because it isn't composed in a very soundtrack-y way so it works very well on its own
trails of cold steel
YGO Forbidden Memories
It's an objectively shit game, but god damn if it doesn't have an incredible soundtrack.
>a game can be a 10/10 w/o great music
nah
but closest I can think of is Cruelty Squad
Nioh 1-2, bayonetta, ninja Gaiden 1-2-razors edge
Nioh 1's music is pretty weak but I liked Nioh 2's
I only like heavy metal in my action games and Nioh 1-2 block my spotify so it’s an automatic shit sound track for me
maybe stop being such a gay then?
I refuse, I will listen to dmc music while playing ninja Gaiden and there’s nothing you can do about it.
When I used to play ps4 (sold it) the spotify thing was great, a reason to actually get premium. All the games I tried at first would auto-mute in-game music and I thought that was a standard thing, until I started playing more japanese games. Almost none do it and some don't even have a way to mute only the music, like Dragon Quest Builders for instance.
RDR2 had some insanely scuffed tracks during missions. The home song was nice along with some stealth tracks, but the gunfights are "we're never getting out of the hood"-tier.
Honest answer? SMT Strange Journey
none. the vast majority of games have good music, especially 10/10 games
Sekiro
Holy shit what a letdown
This company made THIS
How did they frick up the music so bad?
Xenoblade Chronicles X
HELLO?
fallout 1.
Epitome of beanmouth show
I don’t like any games with terrible score.
But if I were to pick one probably Gunfire Reborn. A gem I discovered recently with great gameplay but the score is forgettable. Chinese make for awful composers.
Castlevania harmony of dissonance has the worst music of any metroidvania
It's not exactly a 10/10, but the original Paper Mario doesn't really have great music. It comes up short even compared to other Mario RPGs. There's a reason nothing from the OST is circulated at the level of the Forest Maze track or the Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga battle theme.
I like soulsborne music, its fine for what it is but never found any tracks that memorable other than a couple
Ok not all tracks are bad but the battlescape track for original xcom ufo defense is dogshit, like seriously what the frick? TFTD had way better music across the board.
Gta V (singleplayer), the radio station music are iconic and make up a lot of the identity of the game, but the original soundtrack is mostly out of place most of the time except for welcome to los santos.
As good as it is, Ninja Gaiden Black's OST is just okay. It tries every now & then, but I don't think it ever goes through with its ideas entirely, like with Alma's boss theme. Good intro leading to an okay battle theme.
Avorion. Leave it to the germans to think the same 90-second looped music is fine for a game that can take 20+ hours per playthrough.
Yoshi's New Island
That's a good game? I remember it looking pretty shit around the time it released.
I don’t think the music is terrible but I think Trials and Tribulations has the worst soundtrack in an Ace Attorney and even though it has the best writing in any of the games, I can only rank it as my second favourite in the series (After 1) because the music is so vital to the games
TT has an odd moderato/allegro and kind of a meh cornered but I don't see how you can put justice for all over it, practically every track in that game is blueballs. The new objection while maybe not as good as 2001 is a classic and it has a great trial opener.
I actually think very highly of JFA’s OST, I think that it has the second best pursuit theme after AJ, a really solid cross examination(allegro in particular) and great reminiscence/recollection themes. Great Revival is great, the credits are great and the investigation themes… well they’re only OK, I’ll give you that.
TT recycles a few tracks wholesale from JFA and a lot of its new stuff is questionable. I think it does a good job with atmosphere, the court themes feel dramatic, and the suspenseful stuff sets the mood well but the songs that will play repeatedly throughout the game, as you said yourself, are odd or underwhelming. I’d never just listen to the TT OST by itself, whereas I have and will for 1, 2 and 4
ez
>JS: Oh, not at all! […] How did you meet and start working with people such as Dai, who provided the amazing music for your work?
>R7: How I came to meet Dai-san is, as I said before, my brother and I were making these games, but we didn’t have any music — we couldn’t create music. So what we did is, we used all this free music that’s available on the internet. Of course this presents a problem because these have different sound volumes, which means that we couldn’t balance them properly. So we used this free software which allows you to adjust the volume to make it all the same. Unfortunately, because we’re not very good at this, we made a really bad job and it was really full of noise. At this point Dai-san actually contacted me by email and said, “Shall I help you guys with this? Because you obviously need help.”"
