first i heard of a t-spin was last week. i thought well, whatever, i'm just going to play what i thought was the game. i'm never gonna do that. but then sometimes it comes up and you do end up doing it. I guess if i wanted to add challenge i could try setting them up

setting them up is where my brain fricking breaks especially on higher levels.

Like anything else they burn into your memory by doing it enough times

It's hard to unlearn how you played a game since the late 80's though. The infinite rotation system still feels like a hack, especially after years of the NES and GB versions where once a piece landed it was done.

Tetris DS was the first time I saw them acknowledged and given more power than a Tetris and I thought it was ridiculous. It's all JP players did was set up T-Spin Doubles and Triples and trying to do Tetrises would get you overwhelmed due to how faster it was to set T-Spins up.

I can't fricking do them, they're so hard. Do I need to wait until it's literally just about to fall, or can I spin them at any point into the slot when they're one row above? I genuinely cannot figure out the timing at all.

      Anonymous

You have to rotat it right before it locks and it has to be in a position to where you simply can't slide it in normally. Like in this picture you let the T block fall in sideways then rotate it so it clears both lines.

        Anonymous

So would I wait for the T block to be at the red dot or at the blue dot when I spin it?

          Anonymous

          blue

          Anonymous

Red dot, to be good at Tetris U should learn how pieces rotate, they each have a center they rotate around. T rotate around the center. There are some other wonky things you can do with rotations

          Anonymous

This is how a T piece rotates. Think of it as a plus sign with one arm removed. You want the center of the + to align with its final position, in this case that would be the cell marked with a red dot, and rotate it before the piece locks into place.

            Anonymous

To add on to what said, you'll probably see some people do this for their T-spins instead. It's slightly faster to do (because the T-block starts one block higher) but it looks weirder and you need the red block there for it to work. In some games it also doesn't count as a proper t-spin.

              Anonymous

Wouldn't that setup just kick the T-block up one layer when rotating clockwise? It'd need a block above the red-marked one as well.

                Anonymous

That might make more sense but that's how it works under SRS according to Hard Drop Wiki and Fumen.zui.jp

Shit like this makes my small pea sized brain cry out as my mind still tries to envision the blocks actually rotating into place instead of just instantly changing position so I can't plan that out while I'm playing.

There was a Ganker Tetris thread a few days ago. And some weird dude was cheating by doing T-Spins. I told him it was illegal but he kept doing it.
Thankfully he ended up losing, and even though I didn't win, I'm sure he learned his lesson.
T-Spins are NOT an officially recognized technique and should NOT be used.
If you want T-Spins, make a game and call it T-SPIN. But the name of this game is TETRIS so frick. off.

As strange as single line streaks and T-spins being the best strategy for t99 is, it's so much more fun to pull off than grinding Tetrises and having to set up for I-pieces

      Anonymous

It’s a lot more dynamic and requires some thought to pull off. And I like how your tower looks more chaotic than the Tetris grind tower. Plus you learn to appreciate a pieces instead of dread them

I can play regularly super well but they are to zoomy for me.

It kind of sucks, since my brain is hardwired from 20+ yrs of single player marathon mode.

      Anonymous

Yeah, Tetris DS's online mind raped me as I wasn't prepared for the "Tetrises are king" mindset to be blown the frick out by spamming the T piece clears. As the years went on Tetrises by themselves got worse in favor of t-spins and stacking multiple single to triple clear combos.

It's a technique than when mastered dominates most other players. It sucks for boomers that have to essentially relearn a game they've been playing for years

  11. 2 years ago

Fun fact: Tetrises are competitive in Tetris Effect: Connected zone battle mode because unlike T-spins they're simply hard dropped, allowing you to quickly build emergency zone meter if your last zone attack was shit
That said I prefer classic mode anyway

All it'd take is adding TGM's firm drop in to screw that balance up. At least TGM in general gives up fricks about t-spins, it just wants speed and Tetris.

        Anonymous

It did until The Tetris Company demanded they fall in line and thus the last TGM was a disaster.
TTC is ruining Tetris by demanding almost all games follow the exact same guidelines so we never get weird ass shit like the Disney one having gigantic ass pieces or Bombliss bombs again. I was surprised they let Effect get away with as much as they did as before they wouldn't even let you make blocks different colors than the official approved ones.

Based on Effect's mystery mode, classic mode, etc., if Tetsuya Mizuguchi wanted it, we could have anything. Given he's bros with Henk Rogers to the point where Henk calls him Gooch, if you want a hope in hell to steer the future of Tetris, take it up with Enhance.

the guideline fricking sucks but it isn't the only reason why tgm4 never came out - tgm4's stuck in limbo because mihara a. still can't work out a deal with a publisher and b. has had repeated temper tantrums over westerners playing his game using clones/emulators (even though the tgm1 and 2 ports were both cancelled and the games are still widely unavailable unless you... pirate them). as much as i dislike ttc you can't solely blame them for this situation, mihara has gone as far as trying to ban specific people from uploading tgm footage, trying to force people to abide by ridiculously specific rules when uploading tgm videos and outright threatening to take down every single tgm youtube video that doesn't abide by these rules. the dude's a piece of work. he's been teasing tgm ports over the last year or so but i won't believe it until i actually see it
also, if you actually look at the few tgm4 recordings online you'll already notice that it took even more cues from guideline stuff than tgm3 did - there are four piece previews, for one thing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2ydGCEqDHM

The tspin thing is quite literally only the result of one turbo autist at the The Tetris Company. Despite the fact that s and z spins are infinitely more cool to do.

iirc the guy who designed srs for tetris worlds (john morris?) put it together without actually knowing beforehand that it would become the standard rotation system used in every single tetris game that got shat out afterwards, which is one of the many many reasons why guideline sucks >:)

Classic is the most pure Tetris. The grab bag system of modern Tetris makes it far, far too easy to get Tetris. You need the line-piece droughts to build suspense and potentially force you to take a different strategy so you don't get fricked on building too high.

Is there a more overrated game in the world that tetris? It's like in the top 5 of every all time great vidya list but it boring as frick. You can only play it for like five minutes at a time because it gets so boring after that you'd rather do nothing but stare out your bedroom window than play another round. People on put this in their top games ever so tjey seem smart and somehow knowledgeable and cultured to the "old ways" of video gaming as if that's something to even be proud about. It's so stupid. If you want an actually good game that checks all those boxes they choose something like minesweeper. It's easy to spend hours and hours just getting lost on expert. It's simple, it's old, it sort or takes a brain to play. Put that in your top games list if you want to look cool. Frick tetris
